The following errata report has been submitted for RFC5575,
"Dissemination of Flow Specification Rules".

You may review the report below and at:
http://www.rfc-editor.org/errata_search.php?rfc=5575&eid=3610

--------------------------------------
Type: Editorial
Reported by: Sergey Antipov <sergey.antipov@nsn.com>

Section: 4

Original Text
-------------
If a given component type within a prefix in unknown, the prefix in
question cannot be used for traffic filtering purposes by the
receiver. Since a flow specification has the semantics of a logical
AND of all components, if a component is FALSE, by definition it
cannot be applied. However, for the purposes of BGP route
propagation, this prefix should still be transmitted since BGP route
distribution is independent on NLRI semantics.

Corrected Text
--------------

Two minor typos:

- independent _on_

Hi,

Reading RFC5575, I have one question regarding "6-byte Route Target" value =
of redirect ext-comm.
Are we assuming one particular RT type? Or should we consider all possible =
types (0x0002, 0x0102, 0x0202) with the 6-byte RT value?

Thanks,
Hyojeong

IDR -

During the private asn draft process, several times it was recommended
that proper documentation of the EXISTING reservations for 65535 and
4294967295 be done, so have posted a draft to try and rectify that.
Wanted to get some initial feedback on this draft and add any
additional reasoning the group has for these reservations before
asking for WG acceptance.

Thanks,

Jon

Also, to seed/head off some of the discussion, the justifications in the
draft are easy to see as thin in some cases. IMO, we're looking for
something that will look historically reasonable but beyond that IANA would
rather just have something that says "this doc says they're reserved".
Matter of fact, we could simply publish the document and say "they're
reserved" and be done with it.

Historically, 65535 had been problematic for some implementations. Most of
the reason for this to have been problematic was simply bad code and the
correspondence of the value with UINT16_MAX/-1 signed int16. One would
hope that all such bugs have been banished from the Internet by now. :-)

The extension of such thin reasoning to UINT32_MAX is less because bugs have
been observed using this value and more from the (these days) typical
process of tending to reserve the top and/or bottom code points as magic
values for "future extensions". Sometimes such values are never used,
sometimes they are.

It is, of course, the WG's prerogative to pick whatever justification it
would like in such a document. Let us know what text you'd like. :-)

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the Inter-Domain Routing Working Group of the=
 IETF.

Title : BGP Custom Decision Process
	Author(s) : Alvaro Retana
                          Russ White
	Filename : draft-ietf-idr-custom-decision-03.txt
	Pages : 8
	Date : 2013-05-20

Abstract:
The BGP specification defines a Decision Process for installation of
routes into the Loc-RIB. This process takes into account an
extensive series of path attributes, which can be manipulated to
indicate preference for specific paths. It is cumbersome (if at all
possible) for the end user to define policies that will select, after
partial comparison, a path based on subjective local (domain and/or
   node) criteria.

This document defines a new Extended Community, called the Cost
Community, which may be used in tie breaking during the best path
selection process. The end result is a local custom decision
   process.

At a minimum, we need to formally document the technical reservation of
the numerically highest 16 and 32 bit ASNs as this draft does.

However, another approach would be to deal with these two ASNs as a
protocol issue and require implementations of BGP to NOT originate or
propagate a route with these two ASNs, similar to draft-ietf-idr-as0,
section 2 "Behavior".

While I'm not convinced this is absolutely necessary, we should strongly
consider it. This has the advantage of clearly making any use of these
two ASNs an actual protocol error. As drafted, what implementations
should do when these two ASNs are seen is ambiguous. I'm afraid some
implementations will treat it as an error and others will not, minimally
leading interesting operational situations, and worst case leading to
outright incompatibilities.

On the other hand, treating it only as an operational issue keeps the
status quo, and should not require any changes in the BGP protocol.
But, if not explicitly disallowed, it should be clear that all
implementations must at least provide an option to allow the use of
these two ASNs, though.

Does anyone know if any implementations disallow the use of one or both
of these ASNs currently or maybe planed as part of implementing
draft-ietf-idr-as0? Either as the Local ASN, a Neighbor ASN, or within
the AS_PATH (or AS4_PATH as appropriate)?

Also, someone with a better understanding of RPKI should consider if
there are RPKI issues that should be discussed for these two ASNs, I
don't think so, but I'm not an expert on RPKI.

Thanks for kicking off the discussion with the draft.

There is some significant brain damage out there in some BGP =
implementations. eg: Cisco reserves the MED of 2^32-1 as INVALID =
internally and forces anything 2^32-1 to 2^32-2 silently.

There is some hidden knob in some IOS versions that allows it to have =
2^32-1 properly and moves that overload elsewhere.

I don't know of any implementations that don't support these ASN's as
normal ASN's today (assuming they have 4 byte AS Support for the 2nd
one). I think by any reading of existing standards, having
limitations on these ASN's today would be considered a bug. I know a
number of networks have used 65535 (it occasionally is leaked as well
by folks who don't properly strip private asns) as if it was a Private
Use ASN and many vendors documentation include it in the Private Use
range regardless of the IANA actual allocation.

I'm open to others thoughts, but forcing a change on existing
implementations (versus just IETF/operator guidance on ASN's usage)
was not my intention.

Cheers,

Jon

> Q: Does the WG agree? In particular, if you don't agree, please speak up.

I tend to agree with the draft's -00 version.=20

           Corrected Text:

The lower-order four bits of the Attribute Flags octet are
unused. They MUST be zero when originated. When received, any
value MUST be accepted. When a BGP speaker propagates an
attribute, it MUST propagate these flags as received.

I don't agree with the draft's -01 version for the following reasons:=20

1. I don't see why it is considered more pragmatic/easier to be able to upg=
rade all the "propagating-routers" and "receiving-routers" with this draft-=
01 text, rather than upgrade just the "receiving-routers" with the right be=
havior (accept/ignore wrong bits) mentioned in draft-00 version?

2. the -01 version approach basically presumes that the Reserved bits won't=
/can't be used in future, so why bother. With this presumption, the -01 app=
roach appears to be OK. But for genuine/regular reserved-fields, -00 behavi=
or is the right approach. IOW, IMHO, Reserved-fields used else-where (other=
protocols, other BGP PDUs) should not follow as example, the direction thi=
s draft-01 version is taking. i.e. we may be at risk of setting a wrong exa=
mple of "how to handle reserved flag/fields while propagating them"

3. Upgrading the "receiving-routers" to a s/w-version with the right behavi=
or(draft-00) - this is a "necessary and sufficient" step to fix this proble=
m. And this step is required irrespective of whether we follow draft-00 or =
-01 version.=20
   Upgrading the "propagating-routers" to a s/w-version with draft-01 behav=
ior - this appears to be an extraneous step, and causes the confusion menti=
oned in 2 above. So not required, IMHO.=20

Thanks
Kaliraj

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the Inter-Domain Routing Working Group of the=
 IETF.

Title : Assigned BGP extended communities
	Author(s) : Bruno Decraene
                          Pierre Francois
	Filename : draft-ietf-idr-reserved-extended-communities-05.txt
	Pages : 6
	Date : 2013-05-21

Abstract:
This document defines an IANA registry in order to assign non-
transitive extended communities from. These are similar to the
existing well-known BGP communities defined in RFC 1997 but provide a
control over inter-AS community advertisement as, per RFC RFC 4360,
they are not transitive across Autonomous System boundaries.

For that purpose, this document defines the use of the reserved
Autonomous System number 0.65535 in the non-transitive generic four-
octet AS specific extended community type.

Abstract:
In a number of environments, a component external to a network is
called upon to perform computations based on the network topology and
current state of the connections within the network, including
traffic engineering information. This is information typically
distributed by IGP routing protocols within the network

This document describes a mechanism by which links state and traffic
engineering information can be collected from networks and shared
with external components using the BGP routing protocol. This is
achieved using a new BGP Network Layer Reachability Information
(NLRI) encoding format. The mechanism is applicable to physical and
virtual IGP links. The mechanism described is subject to policy
   control.

Applications of this technique include Application Layer Traffic
Optimization (ALTO) servers, and Path Computation Elements (PCEs).

Because some vendors interpreted what to do when receiving low bits that ar=
e set differently the ability to filter those bits on propagating routers i=

now what would happens to routers and their peering connections on receipt =
we would filter (remove any announcement with the low order bits set).

There are at least 3 major vendors that all interpreted (ignore/accept) dif=
ferently.

I tend to agree with the draft's -00 version.

           Corrected Text:

The lower-order four bits of the Attribute Flags octet are
unused. They MUST be zero when originated. When received, any
value MUST be accepted. When a BGP speaker propagates an
attribute, it MUST propagate these flags as received.

I don't agree with the draft's -01 version for the following reasons:

3. Upgrading the "receiving-routers" to a s/w-version with the right behavi=
or(draft-00) - this is a "necessary and sufficient" step to fix this proble=
m. And this step is required irrespective of whether we follow draft-00 or =
-01 version.
   Upgrading the "propagating-routers" to a s/w-version with draft-01 behav=
ior - this appears to be an extraneous step, and causes the confusion menti=
oned in 2 above. So not required, IMHO.

Thanks
Kaliraj

I don't see why protocol-spec (for propagating-routers) should change, that=
 too "temporarily", until a vendor-software comes up with a bug-fix (for re=

Also, I see the use of "ability to filter" in your above statements suggest=

I believe that with 65535 we're already in this situation to some extent. I
believe many implementations will treat it as being in the "private" range
and thus subject to "remove-private" and similar knobs. Similarly, a lot of
people's AS-path filters are likely to include this from common operational
practice.

IMO, permitting this AS to be used as private, despite not being included as
such, is probably okay. Where things get messy is where pedantic BGP
implementations may choose to not consider it private where others do and
thus we end up with inconsistent behaviors.

AS 2^32-1 doesn't currently have such history and I'm less concerned here.

This perhaps opens the question of whether we should simply give up on
65535, remand it to the private AS range and if that doesn't happen to work
between a given set of providers, consider it an implementation issue?

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the Inter-Domain Routing Working Group of the=
 IETF.

Title : The Accumulated IGP Metric Attribute for BGP
	Author(s) : Pradosh Mohapatra
                          Rex Fernando
                          Eric C. Rosen
                          James Uttaro
	Filename : draft-ietf-idr-aigp-10.txt
	Pages : 14
	Date : 2013-05-23

Abstract:
Routing protocols that have been designed to run within a single
administrative domain ("IGPs") generally do so by assigning a metric
to each link, and then choosing as the installed path between two
nodes the path for which the total distance (sum of the metric of
each link along the path) is minimized. BGP, designed to provide
routing over a large number of independent administrative domains
("autonomous systems"), does not make its path selection decisions
through the use of a metric. It is generally recognized that any
attempt to do so would incur significant scalability problems, as
well as inter-administration coordination problems. However, there
are deployments in which a single administration runs several
contiguous BGP networks. In such cases, it can be desirable, within
that single administrative domain, for BGP to select paths based on a
metric, just as an IGP would do. The purpose of this document is to
provide a specification for doing so.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the Inter-Domain Routing Working Group of the=
 IETF.

Title : Autonomous System (AS) Reservation for Private Use
	Author(s) : Jon Mitchell
	Filename : draft-ietf-idr-as-private-reservation-05.txt
	Pages : 4
	Date : 2013-05-29

Abstract:
This document describes the reservation of Autonomous System numbers
(ASNs) that are for Private Use only and MUST NOT be advertised to
the Internet, known as Private Use ASNs. This document enlarges the
total space available for Private Use ASNs by documenting the
reservation of a second, larger range and updates RFC 1930 by
   replacing Section 10.

I would like to call this draft to the attention of the WG.

This draft proposes to reorganize the IANA registries for BGP Extended
Communities, so that there are separate registries for types and sub-types,
and so that the values that are available for assignment in one registry do
not depend upon the values that have already been assigned in another.

Yakov and I put this proposal together after hearing some complaints from
IANA about the difficulty of figuring out which values are available in
which registries. We also found some mistakes in the registries and some
inconsistencies in the drafts that define the registries. The intention of
this draft is to make it easier for IANA to fulfill its clerical function,
and to make it easier to understand what to request of IANA when a new
Extended Community is defined. No changes to existing implementations or
deployments are required.

If you care about this sort of stuff, please review and provide your
comments.

Title : IANA Registries for BGP Extended Communities
	Author(s) : Eric C. Rosen
                          Yakov Rekhter
	Filename : draft-rosen-idr-extcomm-iana-00.txt
	Pages : 17
	Date : 2013-05-30

Abstract:
This document reorganizes the IANA Registries for the type values and
sub-type values of BGP Extended Communities attribute and the BGP
IPv6-Address-Specific Extended Communities attribute. This is done
in order to remove inter-dependencies among the registries, thus
making it easier for IANA to determine which codepoints are available
for assignment in which registries. This document also clarifies the
information that must be provided to IANA when requesting an
allocation from one or more of these registries. These changes are
compatible with the existing allocations, and thus do not affect
protocol implementations. The changes will however impact the "IANA
Considerations" sections of future protocol specifications. This
document updates RFCs 4360 and 5701.
