In general, we agree that that an analog reference point would be easier =
to understand from the operator's standpoint. Our initial goal as stated =
when this issue was raised was to eliminate the loss of SNR due to =
combined requirements of the analog reference point and the high DLP for =
some countries.=20

As you have stated previously, the largest signal level for voiceband =
tones is 0dBm. However, this isn't the largest value that would need to =
be generated out of the MTA. Rather this is the maximum of the range for =
some signals that is acceptable for that tone. For example, in the UK, =
dialtone can be between -27dBm and 0dBm to be valid, it doesn't mean =
that dialtone of 0dBm needs to be generated. Even if we restricted the =
MIB range slightly, we believe we would far exceed the requirements in =
EN 300 001.=20

Therefore, we believe the range should further be restricted to -25dB to =
-3dB to help alleviate this problem. If we could make this change, and =
keep the analog reference point, then this should be an acceptable =
solution to all of the concerns raised. Here is what the final =
definition of this parameter would look like:

pktcSigDevToneDbLevel OBJECT-TYPE=20
    SYNTAX Integer32 (-250..-30)=20
    UNITS "TenthdBm"=20
    MAX-ACCESS read-write=20
    STATUS current=20
    DESCRIPTION=20
" This is the decibel level at which tones could be
generated at the a and b terminals (TE connection point)."
    DEFVAL { -4 }=20
    ::=3D{pktcSigDevToneEntry 2 }=20

Callfor Comments (NEW ISSUE pktcSigDevToneDbLevel reference point)

Motorola does not agree with the proposed change to a digital reference =
point.
In looking at the PC NCS spec, there is guidance that the RJ11 connector =
is the appropriate reference point. The MIB also supports RJ11 as the =
reference point:
"An endpoint or MTA endpoint is a standard RJ-11 telephony physical port =
located on the MTA and used for attaching the telephone device to the =
MTA."
In addition, the Telecommunications industry uses the RJ11 connector as =
the reference (interface) point. Newer standards also use this as the =
demarcation between the Network Operator and the CPE, thus it is the =
user "interface" reference. Changing to an internal reference point =
(digital PCM code) does not have meaning since it cannot be directly =
measured by the operator when the MTA is installed.
Therefore, it is appropriate for the reference to be as presently stated =
in the pktcSigDevToneDbLevel object. The MIB, which is provisioned by =
the operator of the system must be "friendly" to the operators point of =
view. To burden the operator with tracking loss plans (which may vary =
from MTA to MTA or line to line) is not practical.=20

Randy,=20

Few comments,=20

I review the MIB and appears compelling respect to previous RFC=20

Just one comment

(*) traceRouteCtlMiscOptions=20
It appears to me an uncanny object and rather implementations may opt to
extend the capabilities in the private branch, could leave with that to
avoid deprecation, of if there are field implementations.=20

Regardless of the additions to the MIB I apologize for the late notice,

Before sending a complete proposal and get your concept of the best
approach, below is the proposal to add a simplified Compliance
statement for devices not requiring to keep constant status of
PING/TRACEROUTE operations, only remote operation per operator request.

We are looking at your comments about the clear overlap in
draft-ietf-disman-remops-mib-v2-01.txt
With IPCDN draft
http://www.ipcdn.org/drafts/draft-ietf-ipcdn-cable-gateway-tools-mib-00.
txt ( currently out of date in IETF drafts site) which is clearly a
subset of the DISMAN-PING-MIB=20
Lectors refer to
http://www1.ietf.org/mail-archive/working-groups/ipcdn/current/msg00818.
html

Should the proposal below being include in the remops MIB or should we
update IPCDN cable gateway Tools MIB module to be just the compliance
statement outlined below?=20

RFC 3014 (LOG-MIB) introduces the concept of "named log" and "null named
log" default entry for devices not supporting the named log=20
Named log is analog to disman remops draft for "OwnerIndex" and
"TestName" where default entries are created
(null owner, null TestName) for a manager requested operation of PING/
TRACEROUTE, NSLOOKUP, mostly for small foot-print devices with no
network monitoring role at the connectivity level as pretended with this
updated RFC.

In summary A new Compliance Statement for small devices with no
monitoring capabilities to :
 1) remove the constant pulling and login information=20
 2) remove the test row creation=20
     - CTL* Results* tables only default entries (null owner, null
TestName)
 3) History* tables not required.
	- New basicGroups to exclude History* objects and other objects
which are not relevant to the simplified=20
        system.=20
      - Create an additional set of Compliance statements to require the
new Groups and other objects Compliance=20
        requirements MIN-ACCESS clauses mainly

Schema of the content of the new Compliance statement:=20

No, it was supposed to end March 2. However, I'm not
going to hand it to our AD until I can be reasonably sure
that it has received adequate review.

It would have been nice to have learned of this earlier, rather than
during WG last call.

I'd like to have this discussion sooner rather than later, so please
make
your specific proposal as quickly as you can. My opinion as a technical
contributor is that the case for these changes would need to be fairly
compelling if they would result in the remote operations MIB cycling
at proposed rather than advancing to draft standard. As working group
chair, I want to ensure that whatever course we take reflects WG
consensus. So, balancing the need for bringing this to a conclusion
with
the need to ensure that the technical issues are properly considered,
I'll entertain discussion of this issue ("ad hoc procedure call") until
Friday noon (Korean Time). Shortly thereafter I'll make a call on
whether there is consensus to modify the draft regarding this specific
proposal.

Both seem reasonable. If we can include a "basic" compliance statement
to suit your needs without jeopardizing progression, that seems like
an option that I would prefer as a technical contributor, though I
admit that it is not a strong preference and would like to hear other
opinions.

I have no problem with this in principle, and think it would be
really nice if we can verify that the MIB definitions do not preclude
operating this way.

I'd phrase it a bit differently. Rather than "remove" information,
I think the proposal is to ensure that it can function meaningfully using
a small subset of the objects.

I'd like to hear from Juergen (and others) regarding the details of the proposed
compliance material, especially with regard to whether there are
any details in the current object definitions that would prevent this usage.

any suggested changes?

In the revision history : ( if option is deprecation), something like=20
The MIB object traceRouteCtlMiscOptions is being deprecated,
implementations willing to extend the traceRoute functionality with
proprietary parameters can follow standard procedures of extending entry
tables (e.g. AUGMENTS [RFC2578])

If willing to have a direct parameters reference in the CTL entry,
similar to the existing traceRouteCtlMiscOptions, uses a new object with
RowPointer syntax or an ID pointing to a private table entry,
( in some cases it may simplify the configuration model if the vendor
feature is just a flag or a common parameter set for all
owners/testNames, pointing the test to the same parameter definition,
policy, etc.
 =20
As I said, it seems to me to be quite unusual object definition, Due the
already RFC status could be left as is, or change it for one of the
above options or any other alternative.=20

Wim,

Thank you for your comments. If I understand proposed solution correctly, I believe you are suggesting a change could be made to the TC as follows:

PktcRingCadence   ::= TEXTUAL-CONVENTION
       STATUS current
       DESCRIPTION
This object represents a ring cadence and repeatable characteristics.
The first two octets of the bit string represent the length in bits of
the duration of the cadence. The third octet is used to
             represent repeatable characteristics. 00000000 means
repeatable, and 10000000 means non repeatable. Each Bit
after the third octet represents 50 ms and 1 represents
ring and 0 represents silent. The first bit of the fourth
octet is the first bit of the ring cadence. A total of 264
Bits can be set to represent 13200 ms of total cadence
             cycle.
	SYNTAX	OCTET STRING (SIZE(4..36))

The following object descriptions would change (i.e., remove the duration and repeatable characteristics sentences) and the DEFVAL would be removed:

pktcSigDevRgCadence
pktcSigDevRsCadence
pktcSigDevR0Cadence
pktcSigDevR1Cadence
pktcSigDevR2Cadence
pktcSigDevR3Cadence
pktcSigDevR4Cadence
pktcSigDevR5Cadence
pktcSigDevR6Cadence
pktcSigDevR7Cadence

The following object SYNTAX would change to use the PktcRingCadence TC:

pktcSigDevRingCadence

The following objects could then be deleted:

pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence -> would now be covered by pktcSigDevRgCadence (L package)
pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence -> would now be covered by pktcSigDevRsCadence (L package)

You could then update your "Clarification of L Package for Euro-PacketCable Document v6.0 (2004/1/20)" to reflect these changes, if there is agreement.

Hi Gordon,

I asked you the difference between those two MIB-object a long time ago,
and you pointed out
that a different object was needed for Europe because of the difference
in total time and needed
granularity.

If the total duration difference needs to be supported, it needs to be
supported without the need
for the E-package.

As it is important that basic calls can be supported without an MTA that
support the E-package,
and you clarified that for Europe a longer cadence is needed. Based on
that it seems the normal
way to go to have the two extra MIB-objects.
By that a CMS can support both European and US market without any
changes on the CMS !

Please note that for now the E-package is still optional, as far as I
know no CMS
supports it !

A solution would be to have the definition adjusted for the MIB so it
supports both US and European requirements:

the duration of the cadence can be adjusted by having leading zeroes.
The total number of bits needs to be increased to support a longer
maximum length, and more granularity (50 ms).

This would mean that the pktcSigDevRgCadence and RsCadence and r0 to r7
take the definition of the
for now European-only cadence. This allow the needed flexibility while
having only one mib-object to specify the cadences.
This can be done by adjusting the textual convention (PktcRingCadence)

This would mean that an MTA can have exactly the same mapping from NCS
to MIB for the L-package, independent of the region in which it will be
used,
and independent from possible E-package support.

Thanks,
  Best regards,
    Wim

Exactly. This is precisely what the pktcSigDevRingCadenceTable object is
defined to handle (international ring cadences to 13.2s) using the V5.x
"cr(x)" mechanism noted in the object description. For example, an
international operator could define cr5 for standard ring and cr9 for
ring splash, etc for up to 128 international cadences.

V5.x defined 128 possible ring cadences for international ring messages
without concern for what those cadences are named. The 101 909-4 spec
does not name these cadences either and the name should not be a concern
for the MIB definitions.

It's might also be worth noting that the "pktcSigDevRgCadence" and
"pktcSigDevRsCadence" on one hand, and "pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence"
and "pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence" - on the other have different
requirement for the Cadence timing granularity, hence the
"pktcSigDevRgCadence" and "pktcSigDevRsCadence" could not have been used
to represent Euro-PC Cadence resolution requirement reflected in
"pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence" and "pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence".

Interesting. Thanks for pointing that out. However, I don't follow why
the mapping has been made that way in the "Clarification of L Package
for Euro-PacketCable Document v6.0 (2004/1/20)."

The objects referenced in 2.19 and 2.21 for the L package rg and rs
cadences are in the international group with a max cadence of 13.2s. The
other distinctive ring cadences in the above document map to core L
package objects r0..r7 with a max cadence of 6.0s. The cadence mapping
seems to be inconsistent. I would have expected the 2.19 and 2.21
cadence for rg/rs to be mapped to the pktcSigDevRgCadence and
pktcSigDevRsCadence core L package objects. International cadences would
then be handled via the E package extensions and associated object
(pktcSigDevRingCadenceTable).

Wim,

Can you comment/clarify why the rg/rs cadences are mapped to objects in
the international group instead of the pktcSigDevRgCadence and
pktcSigDevRsCadence objects? Thanks.

I am not sure I can completely agree with this statement (if I
understand it correctly). Both of these objects are required for
Euro-L-package, because of the way the RG and RS signalls are currently
defined:

For Euro-L-Package:
   - RG -> pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence
   - RS -> pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence

The "pktcSigDevRingCadenceTable" contains the cadence values for the
E-package. Having in mind that E-package is optional, and L-package is
mandatory, I am not sure I understand how pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence
and pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence can be "merged" into the
"pktcSigDevRingCadenceTable".

Or, are you suggesting that "pktcSigDevRingCadenceTable" should contain
the RG and RS cadencies for Euro-L-Package along with the values for
E-package? If yes, I think the proper mapping of the table indexes to
the corresponding signal should be somehow defined, and corresponding
modifications of the Euro-L-Package should also be put in place.

Though from the MIB optimization stand point of view the proposed
modification might make sense, however, from the currently imlemented
and intended funtionality prospective it looks unnecessary (please
correct me if my understanding of your proposal deviates from what you
had in mind).

The pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence and pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence
objects are redundant. These objects are recommended to be deleted from
the NCS Signaling MIB. The use of separate pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence
and pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence objects is a carryover from the L line
package and they are not needed in the E line package. Instead, normal
ring and ring splash cadences can be defined using the
pktcSigDevRingCadenceTable object.

Wim,

Thank you for your comments. If I understand proposed solution
correctly, I believe you are suggesting a change could be made to the TC
as follows:

PktcRingCadence   ::= TEXTUAL-CONVENTION
       STATUS current
       DESCRIPTION
This object represents a ring cadence and repeatable
characteristics.
The first two octets of the bit string represent the length
in bits of
the duration of the cadence. The third octet is used to
             represent repeatable characteristics. 00000000 means
repeatable, and 10000000 means non repeatable. Each Bit
after the third octet represents 50 ms and 1 represents
ring and 0 represents silent. The first bit of the fourth
octet is the first bit of the ring cadence. A total of 264
Bits can be set to represent 13200 ms of total cadence
             cycle.
	SYNTAX	OCTET STRING (SIZE(4..36))

The following object descriptions would change (i.e., remove the
duration and repeatable characteristics sentences) and the DEFVAL would
be removed:

pktcSigDevRgCadence
pktcSigDevRsCadence
pktcSigDevR0Cadence
pktcSigDevR1Cadence
pktcSigDevR2Cadence
pktcSigDevR3Cadence
pktcSigDevR4Cadence
pktcSigDevR5Cadence
pktcSigDevR6Cadence
pktcSigDevR7Cadence

The following object SYNTAX would change to use the PktcRingCadence TC:

pktcSigDevRingCadence

The following objects could then be deleted:

pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence -> would now be covered by
pktcSigDevRgCadence (L package) pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence -> would now
be covered by pktcSigDevRsCadence (L package)

You could then update your "Clarification of L Package for
Euro-PacketCable Document v6.0 (2004/1/20)" to reflect these changes, if
there is agreement.

Hi Gordon,

I asked you the difference between those two MIB-object a long time ago,
and you pointed out that a different object was needed for Europe
because of the difference in total time and needed granularity.

If the total duration difference needs to be supported, it needs to be
supported without the need
for the E-package.

As it is important that basic calls can be supported without an MTA that
support the E-package,
and you clarified that for Europe a longer cadence is needed. Based on
that it seems the normal way to go to have the two extra MIB-objects. By
that a CMS can support both European and US market without any changes
on the CMS !

Please note that for now the E-package is still optional, as far as I
know no CMS supports it !

This can be done by
adjusting the textual convention (PktcRingCadence)

This would mean that an MTA can have exactly the same mapping from NCS
to MIB for the L-package, independent of the region in which it will be
used, and independent from possible E-package support.

Thanks,
  Best regards,
    Wim

   - RG -> pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence
   - RS -> pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence

Broadcom would agree with this approach provided that (just to spell it =
out explicitely):

	- the "PktcRingCadence" TC will be modified as per proposal,
	- the "pktcSigDevRtCadence" MIB object (in addition to already =
mentioned) will also be affected by the new "PktcRingCadence" SYNTAX.

We would also think that the following clarification in TC description =
would be helpful:

"The first bit of the fourth octet is the first bit of the ring cadence. =
All bits are counted in the network order, such that the octet with only =
1st bit set will look like '10000000' bit sequence."

And another suggestion which might be helpfull on the implemenaition =
side: move the following sentence from the pktcSigDevRingCadenceTable =
decsription to the new TC description: "There will be at most 3 on/off =
transitions per cadence period."

Wim,

Thank you for your comments. If I understand proposed solution
correctly, I believe you are suggesting a change could be made to the TC
as follows:

PktcRingCadence   ::=3D TEXTUAL-CONVENTION=20
       STATUS current=20
       DESCRIPTION
This object represents a ring cadence and repeatable
characteristics.
The first two octets of the bit string represent the length
in bits of=20
the duration of the cadence. The third octet is used to=20
             represent repeatable characteristics. 00000000 means=20
repeatable, and 10000000 means non repeatable. Each Bit=20
after the third octet represents 50 ms and 1 represents=20
ring and 0 represents silent. The first bit of the fourth=20
octet is the first bit of the ring cadence. A total of 264=20
Bits can be set to represent 13200 ms of total cadence=20
             cycle.
	SYNTAX	OCTET STRING (SIZE(4..36))

The following object descriptions would change (i.e., remove the
duration and repeatable characteristics sentences) and the DEFVAL would
be removed:

pktcSigDevRgCadence
pktcSigDevRsCadence
pktcSigDevR0Cadence
pktcSigDevR1Cadence
pktcSigDevR2Cadence
pktcSigDevR3Cadence
pktcSigDevR4Cadence
pktcSigDevR5Cadence
pktcSigDevR6Cadence
pktcSigDevR7Cadence

The following object SYNTAX would change to use the PktcRingCadence TC:

pktcSigDevRingCadence

The following objects could then be deleted:

pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence -> would now be covered by
pktcSigDevRgCadence (L package) pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence -> would now
be covered by pktcSigDevRsCadence (L package)

You could then update your "Clarification of L Package for
Euro-PacketCable Document v6.0 (2004/1/20)" to reflect these changes, if
there is agreement.

Hi Gordon,

I asked you the difference between those two MIB-object a long time ago,
and you pointed out that a different object was needed for Europe
because of the difference in total time and needed granularity.

If the total duration difference needs to be supported, it needs to be
supported without the need=20
for the E-package.=20

As it is important that basic calls can be supported without an MTA that
support the E-package,=20
and you clarified that for Europe a longer cadence is needed. Based on
that it seems the normal way to go to have the two extra MIB-objects. By
that a CMS can support both European and US market without any changes
on the CMS !

Please note that for now the E-package is still optional, as far as I
know no CMS supports it !

A solution would be to have the definition adjusted for the MIB so it
supports both US and European requirements:

the duration of the cadence can be adjusted by having leading zeroes.
The total number of bits needs to be increased to support a longer
maximum length, and more granularity (50 ms).

This would mean that the pktcSigDevRgCadence and RsCadence and r0 to r7
take the definition of the=20
for now European-only cadence. This allow the needed flexibility while
having only one mib-object to specify the cadences. This can be done by
adjusting the textual convention (PktcRingCadence)

This would mean that an MTA can have exactly the same mapping from NCS
to MIB for the L-package, independent of the region in which it will be
used, and independent from possible E-package support.

Thanks,
  Best regards,
    Wim

Both of these objects are required for
Euro-L-package, because of the way the RG and RS signalls are currently
defined:

For Euro-L-Package:=20
   - RG -> pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence
   - RS -> pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence

The "pktcSigDevRingCadenceTable" contains the cadence values for the
E-package. Having in mind that E-package is optional, and L-package is
mandatory, I am not sure I understand how pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence
and pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence can be "merged" into the
"pktcSigDevRingCadenceTable".

Or, are you suggesting that "pktcSigDevRingCadenceTable" should contain
the RG and RS cadencies for Euro-L-Package along with the values for
E-package? If yes, I think the proper mapping of the table indexes to
the corresponding signal should be somehow defined, and corresponding
modifications of the Euro-L-Package should also be put in place.=20

I don't follow this comment. The pktcSigDevRtCadence object does not exist in draft 3 of the NCS MIB. There were no objections raised at last call and pktcSigDevRtCadence was deleted as requested. See the IPCDN archives for 1/23/2004 item 2 for the reasoning.

Broadcom would agree with this approach provided that (just to spell it out explicitely):

	- the "PktcRingCadence" TC will be modified as per proposal,
	- the "pktcSigDevRtCadence" MIB object (in addition to already mentioned) will also be affected by the new "PktcRingCadence" SYNTAX.

We would also think that the following clarification in TC description would be helpful:

"The first bit of the fourth octet is the first bit of the ring cadence. All bits are counted in the network order, such that the octet with only 1st bit set will look like '10000000' bit sequence."

And another suggestion which might be helpfull on the implemenaition side: move the following sentence from the pktcSigDevRingCadenceTable decsription to the new TC description: "There will be at most 3 on/off transitions per cadence period."

Wim,

Thank you for your comments. If I understand proposed solution
correctly, I believe you are suggesting a change could be made to the TC
as follows:

PktcRingCadence   ::= TEXTUAL-CONVENTION
       STATUS current
       DESCRIPTION
This object represents a ring cadence and repeatable
characteristics.
The first two octets of the bit string represent the length
in bits of
the duration of the cadence. The third octet is used to
             represent repeatable characteristics. 00000000 means
repeatable, and 10000000 means non repeatable. Each Bit
after the third octet represents 50 ms and 1 represents
ring and 0 represents silent. The first bit of the fourth
octet is the first bit of the ring cadence. A total of 264
Bits can be set to represent 13200 ms of total cadence
             cycle.
	SYNTAX	OCTET STRING (SIZE(4..36))

The following object descriptions would change (i.e., remove the
duration and repeatable characteristics sentences) and the DEFVAL would
be removed:

pktcSigDevRgCadence
pktcSigDevRsCadence
pktcSigDevR0Cadence
pktcSigDevR1Cadence
pktcSigDevR2Cadence
pktcSigDevR3Cadence
pktcSigDevR4Cadence
pktcSigDevR5Cadence
pktcSigDevR6Cadence
pktcSigDevR7Cadence

The following object SYNTAX would change to use the PktcRingCadence TC:

pktcSigDevRingCadence

The following objects could then be deleted:

pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence -> would now be covered by
pktcSigDevRgCadence (L package) pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence -> would now
be covered by pktcSigDevRsCadence (L package)

You could then update your "Clarification of L Package for
Euro-PacketCable Document v6.0 (2004/1/20)" to reflect these changes, if
there is agreement.

I don't follow this comment. The pktcSigDevRtCadence object does not =
exist in draft 3 of the NCS MIB. There were no objections raised at last =

If I understand proposed solution
correctly, I believe you are suggesting a change could be made to the TC
as follows:

PktcRingCadence   ::=3D TEXTUAL-CONVENTION=20
       STATUS current=20
       DESCRIPTION
This object represents a ring cadence and repeatable
characteristics.
The first two octets of the bit string represent the length
in bits of=20
the duration of the cadence. The third octet is used to=20
             represent repeatable characteristics. 00000000 means=20
repeatable, and 10000000 means non repeatable. Each Bit=20
after the third octet represents 50 ms and 1 represents=20
ring and 0 represents silent. The first bit of the fourth=20
octet is the first bit of the ring cadence. A total of 264=20
Bits can be set to represent 13200 ms of total cadence=20
             cycle.
	SYNTAX	OCTET STRING (SIZE(4..36))

The following object descriptions would change (i.e., remove the
duration and repeatable characteristics sentences) and the DEFVAL would
be removed:

pktcSigDevRgCadence
pktcSigDevRsCadence
pktcSigDevR0Cadence
pktcSigDevR1Cadence
pktcSigDevR2Cadence
pktcSigDevR3Cadence
pktcSigDevR4Cadence
pktcSigDevR5Cadence
pktcSigDevR6Cadence
pktcSigDevR7Cadence

The following object SYNTAX would change to use the PktcRingCadence TC:

pktcSigDevRingCadence

The following objects could then be deleted:

pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence -> would now be covered by
pktcSigDevRgCadence (L package) pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence -> would now
be covered by pktcSigDevRsCadence (L package)

You could then update your "Clarification of L Package for
Euro-PacketCable Document v6.0 (2004/1/20)" to reflect these changes, if
there is agreement.

Hi Gordon,

I asked you the difference between those two MIB-object a long time ago,
and you pointed out that a different object was needed for Europe
because of the difference in total time and needed granularity.

If the total duration difference needs to be supported, it needs to be
supported without the need=20
for the E-package.=20

As it is important that basic calls can be supported without an MTA that
support the E-package,=20
and you clarified that for Europe a longer cadence is needed. Based on
that it seems the normal way to go to have the two extra MIB-objects. By
that a CMS can support both European and US market without any changes
on the CMS !

Please note that for now the E-package is still optional, as far as I
know no CMS supports it !

A solution would be to have the definition adjusted for the MIB so it
supports both US and European requirements:

the duration of the cadence can be adjusted by having leading zeroes.
The total number of bits needs to be increased to support a longer
maximum length, and more granularity (50 ms).

This would mean that the pktcSigDevRgCadence and RsCadence and r0 to r7
take the definition of the=20
for now European-only cadence. This allow the needed flexibility while
having only one mib-object to specify the cadences. This can be done by
adjusting the textual convention (PktcRingCadence)

This would mean that an MTA can have exactly the same mapping from NCS
to MIB for the L-package, independent of the region in which it will be
used, and independent from possible E-package support.

Thanks,
  Best regards,
    Wim

Both of these objects are required for
Euro-L-package, because of the way the RG and RS signalls are currently
defined:

For Euro-L-Package:=20
   - RG -> pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence
   - RS -> pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence

Though from the MIB optimization stand point of view the proposed
modification might make sense, however, from the currently imlemented
and intended funtionality prospective it looks unnecessary (please

	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ipcdn-pktc-signaling-03.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

I agree with Azlina about not moving pktcSigNotification.

In fact,
<http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ops-mib-review-guidelines-02
.txt> goes further in section 4.7:

4.7. Notification Definitions

RFC 2578 Section 8 specifies the rules for notification definitions.
   In particular:

   - Inaccessible objects MUST NOT appear in the OBJECTS clause.

   - For each object type mentioned in the OBJECTS clause, the
DESCRIPTION clause MUST specify which object instance is to be
present in the transmitted notification and MUST specify the
     information/meaning conveyed.

   - The OBJECT IDENTIFIER (OID) value assigned to each notification
type MUST have a next-to-last sub-identifier of zero, so that it is
possible to convert an SMIv2 notification definition into an SMIv1
trap definition and back again without information loss (see
[RFC2576] Section 2.1.2) and possible for a multilingual proxy
chain to translate an SNMPv2 trap into an SNMPv1 trap and back
again without information loss (see [RFC2576] Section 3). In
addition, the OID assigned to a notification definition MUST NOT
also be assigned to another definition that results in OID
registration. RFC 2578 Section 3.6 lists the constructs that
     create OID registrations.
...

The key requirement above is that the "OBJECT IDENTIFIER (OID) value
assigned to each notification type MUST have a next-to-last sub-identifier
of zero".

   - RG -> pktcSigDevStandardRingCadence
   - RS -> pktcSigDevRingSplashCadence

Regarding statement (6):

According to the PC Codec spec:

4.4.3 Voice Activity Detection (VAD)
A vendor MAY employ VAD to reduce bandwidth consumption. If employed, this capability MUST be optional, allowing disabling. Some codecs have associated VAD implementations (e.g. G.729B), while many others do not (e.g. G.711 and G.728). In the latter cases, the VAD implementation MUST adhere to the IMTC Voice-Over-IP Forum Service Interoperability Implementation Agreement 1.0, dated December 1, 1997 [5].

If you are proposing a PC spec change, please raise the issue on the appropriate PC reflector and via the ECN process as necessary.

Regarding statements (3) and (5):

Perhaps it would be better to eliminate the regional terms (i.e., North America), and instead use the term L package to refer to the core functionality (as defined by CableLabs/PacketCable) and E package to refer to extensions over and above the core package (defined in support of international requirements). The standards provide guidance on what to signal to use, and it is up to the operator and vendor to define what is required based on local requirements. Remember, in the international market there is a hybrid need. For example, some operators use the L package and require E package extensions.

There is no need for any additional power objects for each frequency. The original comment submission is based on a misinterpretation of the specification. Here is how it works:

The 300 001 specification states a RANGE of values for the frequency and power (i.e., x1=minimum level, x2=maximum level) that CPE (phones/fax/modems) should be able to accept as input from the various country/operator networks. The range explanation is in the text preceeding the Table 1.7.1 in 300 001. In reading an entry from the table, the frequency may be any value between f1 OR f2 but not both combined. For the power, the level will be in the RANGE that is stated regardless of the actual frequency being used. Thus, the single power level in the MIB is sufficient. This interpretation is further supported by supplement 2 to the ITU-T 181 specification which states: "f1//f2 in some exchanges frequency f1 is used and in others frequency f2 is used." Given the table 1.7.1 example for dial tone for Belgium, the correct interpretation is f1 (420 Hz would probably be 425 Hz +/- tolerance) or f2 (455 Hz would probably be 450 Hz +/- tolerance) at a SINGLE power level within the R!
 ANGE -20 dBm (p1) to -4 dBm (p2).

Again, these are not the source specifications but a statement of the possible operating values that may be supplied to the CPE devices at the end of the local loop.

The implication is that a source (eMTA) that generates a frequency at an amplitude within the stated ranges should be acceptable to CPE devices.

Upon review of ITU spec, supplement 2, and ES 201 970, Motorola further disagrees with the deletion of the following additional items from the pktcSigDevToneType object:

alertingSignal(17),
specialDial(18),
specialInfo(19),
release(20),
congestion(21)

To ensure these objects can also be signaled, Motorola is initiating a proposal to modify TS 909-101 part 4, appendix B.4 to include NCS line codes and other parameters.

Subject: RE: [ipcdn] Signaling MIB - Draft 3 - Last Call -
pktcSigDevToneType (Issue 3)

Motorola disagrees with the deletion of the following items from the pktcSigDevToneType object:

userDefined1 (13),
userDefined2 (14),
userDefined3 (15),
userDefined4 (16)

These objects are required by several international operators to support additional signals for their networks.

To ensure these user defined objects can be signaled, Motorola is initiating a proposal to modify TS 909-101 part 4, appendix B.4 to include NCS line codes and other parameters. For example:

Code Description Signal

ps1 Programmable Signal 1	TO
ps2 Programmable Signal 2	TO
ps3 Programmable Signal 3	TO
ps4 Programmable Signal 4	TO

The ITU spec, supplement 2 to 180 will also be reviewed to see if more than four user defined signals are required for the pktcSigDevToneType object.

My appologies. Correction on item 1 as follows: replace pktcSigCapablityTable with pktcSigCapabilityTable in the pktcSigEndPntCapabilityIndex object only.

That is replace "pktcSigCapablityTable" with "pktcSigEndPntConfigTable" in the pktcSigEndPntCapabilityIndex object and "pktcSigEndPntTable" with "pktcSigEndPntConfigTable" in the pktcSigEndPntConfigStatus object.

> 3. I agree these objects can be added. However, it is not clear to me that an operator would actually use different signaling methods on the SAME line. Just to be clear these additional VMWI objects are for on-hook data transmission not associated with ringing as specified in 300 659-1 section 6.2.

Good point indeed. We currently have

  pktcSigNotification OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= { pktcSigMib 0 }
  pktcSigMibObjects   OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= { pktcSigMib 1 }
  pktcSigConformance  OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= { pktcSigMib 3 }

When we follow the OID layout suggested in appendix D of
<http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ops-mib-review-guidelines-02
.txt>, which is

  xxxMIB
  |
  +-- xxxNotifications(0)
  +-- xxxObjects(1)
  +-- xxxConformance(2)
      |
      +-- xxxCompliances(1)
      +-- xxxGroups(2)

then I suggest instead redefining pktcSigConformance as

  pktcSigConformance  OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= { pktcSigMib 2 }

Thanks,

Regards,

David
