This is to announce the free availability
of the second beta release of the e-print
Test Suite at http://www.trcs.com.

The e-print Test Suite is an IPP client that
facilitates the testing of printers that
implement the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP).

There are several sample scripts that can serve
as a basis for testing for the upcoming IPP
bake-off. These sample scripts will be enhanced
and expanded by the time of the bake-off.

The e-print Test Suite is built
on the framework of the e-print Engine.
The e-print Test Suite provides the
IPP server developer essential tools to
aid in the development and testing
of IPP printers.

The capabilities of the e-print Test Suite
include:

o Uses an XML interface to drive the ePrint
        Test Suite.
o Allows reproduction of tests by providing
a file interface to store tests.
o Allows attributes to be specified that are
not part of the IPP standard.
o Allows the output of one request to "feed"
        the input of another request.
o Provides the ability to specify "expected"
        values from a request.
o Allows the specification of valid or invalid
values to be sent to the IPP server.
    o Written entirely in Java.
o Full tracing of requests and replies.

For more information or to download a copy of the
beta software, please visit our website at
http://www.trcs.com or e-mail Rajesh Chawla
at rajesh@trcs.com.

I agree that the client and server must accept the Connection: close header.
I'm wondering how to satisfy the requirement that the client and server MUST
include this header for the last operation in a sequence of operations.
Specifically, how do the client and server know, a priori, that the current
operation is the last operation in a sequence (and therefore MUST include the Co
nnection: close header)?

I tend to follow the saying "Be conservative in what you send, and liberal in
what
you accept..."

Whether the text says MUST or not, IMHO we should be designing clients and
servers
to handle a "connection: close" header whenever it is received and still
function
normally, albeit with possibly less performance.

Since I am not working on a client, I cannot speak for what clients are or will
actually do, but I do think the client end should drive the connection status,
whevever possible.

I've got following questions when I read and implement the model document.

1. In section 4.1.11 the the words say that "The 'boolean' attribute syntax
is similar
to an enum with only two values: 'true' and 'false'. "
And in section 4.1.4 the words says "The 'enum' attribute syntax is an
enumerated
integer value that is in the range from 1 to 2**31 - 1 (MAX)."
Does this mean, that a boolean attribute got a 32 bit size value?
In the protocol document, it says that a boolean is a byte size!

2. In section 3.2.6.1 'Get-Jobs Request' I wondered, if the attribute
'my-jobs' is
present and set to TRUE, MUST the 'requesting-user-name' attribute be there
to,
and if it's not present what should the IPP printer do?

Abstract

This document is one of a set of documents which together describe all
aspects of a new Internet Printing Protocol (IPP). IPP is an
application level protocol that can be used for distributed printing on
the Internet. The full set of IPP documents includes:

    Internet Printing Protocol/1.0: Design Goals
Internet Printing Protocol/1.0: Rational for Structure and Model
    Internet Printing Protocol/1.0: Requirements
Internet Printing Protocol/1.0: Model and Semantics
Internet Printing Protocol/1.0: Encoding and Transport

This document deals with the security considerations for IPP.

1.0 Introduction

It is required that the Internet Printing Protocol be able to operate
within a secure environment. Wherever possible, IPP will make use of
existing security protocols and services. IPP will not invent new
security features when the requirements described in this document can
be met by existing protocols and services. Examples of such services
include Secure Sockets (SSL) [SSL3], Digest Access Authentication in
HTTP, and the Content MD-5 Header Field in MIME. Although this
document talks about SSL3, SSL3 is not a standard.

IPP [IPP-PRO, IPP-MOD, IPP-REQ] makes use of the "ipp:" URL scheme with
HTTP 1.1 as a transport protocol, in which URL path names and MIME
types are used to encode IPP from the HTTP protocol data stream.
Security attributes like the mechanism used (TLS[TLS], SSL, DAA, etc)
are specified as parameters as part of the ipp URL.

2.0 IPP Scheme Syntax and Security Parameters

The syntax for the IPP scheme is identical to the existing "http"
scheme except for the scheme name, security attributes and different
default port. This syntax could also be used for later versions of
HTTP [HTTP] protocol that could specify the security attributes as part
of the http:// URL.

IPP syntax:

       ipp://host[:port]/<IPP-specific-abs-path> [";" parameters]
       parameters := "AUTH=" secure-protocol *["," secure-protocol]
       secure-protocol := "TLS" | "SSL3" | "DAA"

In the future other protocols like IPV6 could also be used as the
secure protocol.

Multiple security protocols can be listed, but not all combinations
make sense (e.g "AUTH=TLS,SSL3"). While other combinations can be
commonly used (e.g. "AUTH=TLS,DAA"). The order of the protocols are
irrelevant. The IPP client must be prepared to accept the appropriate
response for any of the security protocols listed. An IPP client should
not make a request for a security protocol it can not handle. The client
and the server should be configurable for security protocol specific
paramters (e.g. algorithms, key length, etc.)

3.0 Translation of IPP Scheme into HTTP Scheme

Translation of the ipp scheme into http depends upon whether proxy
servers, tunnels or gateways are used. Parameters are translated into
header fields in the HTTP protocol. Section 4.5 of RFC 2068 describes
the general header fields used.

Associated with this IPP scheme is an IANA-assigned TCP port
number, 631, which is the default port number used by clients to
contact IPP servers that are represented by IPP URLs. If another port
number is explitly specified, that port will be used by the client.

The IPP scheme implies all of the same protocol semantics as that of
the HTTP [HTTP] scheme, except that, by default, the port number used
by clients to connect to the server is port 631. The semantics for
clients configured for proxy access is different as described below.

The implementation impact of using the new scheme on the existing
specifications is mainly in the HTTP headers area. The IPP scheme URI
is explicitly stored in the application/ipp MIME object.

3.1 Protocol specific considerations

TLS security method in IPP follows the standard of negotiating TLS over
the same port [TLS-HTTP]. This involves sending a HTTP header
"Upgrade: TLS/1.0" with the original request. The server is not
required to upgrade to TLS, but if it accepts a TLS upgrade it will
respond with status "101 Switching Protocols" at which point the TLS
handshaking begins. After the TLS connection is established, the
orginal operation is completed. A server that requires a TLS
connection will respond with a status "418: Upgrade Required" when
contacted without a TLS connection. Since communications are not
protected until the TLS connection is established, an IPP client may
want to use an innocuous method (e.g. Get-Printer-Attributes,
Validate-Job) to establish a secure connection before sending any
data. - Note, since the [TLS-HTTP] document is still incomplete, this
document may copy the relevent text of the prelimary draft to keep this
draft from being held up in the standards process.

SSL3 security method in IPP follows the existing practice of a separate
security port with a https method [HTTPS].

DAA security method in IPP is used as specified in the standard [DAA].
The URI parameter is the URI generated on the request line, in
accordance with the rules specified below.

When DAA is used with SSL3 or TLS, the server should first establish
secure communications (SSL3 or TLS) before doing client authentication
(DAA).

The IPP client has certain security expectations, as encoded in the
security parameters of the IPP URI. If the server fails to meet these
expectations (e.g. not upgrading to TLS), the client may terminate the
connection.

3.2 HTTP Header Usage

When an IPP client obtains an IPP URL, the interpretation (translation)
of this URL by the client can take one of two forms, depending upon
whether the client is configured to use an HTTP 1.1 proxy server.

3.2.1 IPP Client Configured with no proxy server

When an IPP client (no proxy configured) obtains an "ipp:" URL such as
"ipp://myhost.com/myprinter/myqueue;AUTH=TLS", it MUST open an TCP
connection to port 631 on myhost.com, with the following example
headers:

POST /myprinter/myqueue HTTP/1.1
Host: myhost.com:631
Upgrade: TLS/1.0
Content-type: application/ipp
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
...

In the above example, the client indicates that it wants to communicate
using the TLS protocol using RSA for encryption and 40 bit export
variety key, no signature and a message digest using MD5 one-way hash
function.

3.2.2 IPP Client Configured for Proxy Service

When an IPP client that uses a proxy named "myproxy.com" obtains the
URL "ipp://myhost.com/myprinter/myqueue;AUTH=TLS", it MUST open a TCP
connection to myproxy.com with the following example headers:

POST http://myhost.com:631/myprinter/myqueue HTTP/1.1
Host: myhost.com:631
Upgrade: TLS/1.0
Content-type: application/ipp
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
...

3.3 SERVER GENERATED URIs:

At the server, a job URI is generated in response to a client's
request. This URI will use the IPP method with IPP security
parameters. The client will then use this URI for their specific
needs. The security protocol must match the security protocol used by
the client request that created the job URI. The server should also
store the security used in creating a job URI and enforce that level of
security on subsequent operations on that job URI.

I've got following questions when I read and implement the model document.

1. In section 4.1.11 the the words say that "The 'boolean' attribute syntax

And in section 4.1.4 the words says "The 'enum' attribute syntax is an

Does this mean, that a boolean attribute got a 32 bit size value?

2. In section 3.2.6.1 'Get-Jobs Request' I wondered, if the attribute
'my-jobs' is

The mailing lists are back up and running. Just to test everything out, I have
sent this mail to ALL the mailing lists. If you get this mail on one list and
not on another you think you should be on then I suggest you resubscribe by
sending e-mail to:

majordomo@pwg.org

with the body of the note containing

subscribe <list-name>

when <list-name> is the name of the list you wish to subscribe to. You can
include multiple subscriptions in the same note.

Thanks for your patience during this transfer.

All,

It now looks like our email, ftp, and web services are up and working again
in the new location. Thanks to the staff at Lexmark, who I know has
struggled quite a lot over the last few weeks to get everything set up.

I will now start sending out IPP material that has accumulated for a while
(in some cases resending stuff that I am uncertain about if you ever got). I
will try to do that in the approximate order that they occurred. It might
take me a couple of days to gradually empty my IPP out tray...

Here are the pointers to the initial version of the PWG IPP Implementors'
Guide. As the name indicates, this document tries to collect issues raised
by implementors of IPP on the DL and come up with clarifications and/or
fixes for later versions of the IPP drafts.

This is the start-off version that was discussed in Toronto.
A revised version should appear shortly, reflecting the resolutions from
Toronto and adding new issues that have been raised after Toronto.

Note that there is no TXT version for this document:

I agree that the client and server must accept the Connection: close he=<br>

I'm wondering how to satisfy the requirement that the client and server=<br>
 MUST<br>
include this header for the last operation in a sequence of operations.=<br>
<p>
Specifically, how do the client and server know, a priori, that the cur=<br>

Whether the text says MUST or not, IMHO we should be designing clients =<br>

I am sending this to both the normal IPP DL, but also to the test team, as
we
still have problems with the IPP DL. Sorry if you get this twice.

We will hold our normal weekly conference on Wednesday.

The phone conference this time will concentrate once again on
the definitions for the new Operations and on any late news
on the bake-off.

The latest version of the Operations draft is at:

ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/ipp/new_OPS/draft-pwg-ipp-ops-set1-00-980909.txt

There are also .pdf and .doc versions plus marked-up versions.

The latest information about the Testing on September 23-25 can be found at:

I sent the updated spec to the bake-off attendees last week, but could not

I sent the updated spec to the bake-off attendees last week, but could not
copy to the ftp server until today. We'd like to discuss at tommorrow's
(9/16/98) telecon if there are any remaining issues.

Here are the draft minutes from the IETF42 IPP WG Meeting.

If I do not hear any comments by September 18, this will be sent as the
official minutes to the IETF secretariat.

--

The meeting was attended by 29 people.

Notes were taken by Scott Isaacson.

Agenda:

- Short history of the project (presentation by Carl-Uno Manros)
- Information about upcoming test event for IPP (presentation by Carl-Uno
Manros)
- Security parameters in the ipp:// URL scheme (presentation and discussion
led by John Wenn)
- Similarities and differences between IPP and IFax (discussion led by Larry
Masinter)

A short history and overview of the project was presented by the chair. (see
slides for further details)

11/97 - IPP drafts refined, 5 major documents
12/97 - IPP WG Last Call
1/98 - Edits to WG drafts
2/98 - Drafts submitted to IESG
5/98 - Comments from Area Director
8/98 - Still waiting for final feedback from IESG

The chair informed about an upcoming IPP test event on September 23-25. So
far, 16 organizations have signed up for this inter-operability event. The
testing will be based on the current IPP drafts from June 30, 1998. See
slides for further details.

The most important agenda point was a presentation by John Wenn on how to
build in a security parameter in the ipp:// scheme and mapping of that to
the HTTP Upgrade parameter. With the subsequent documentation of this
solution, which has been validated with the TLS and HTTP groups, it is
believed that all known issues raised by the IESG have been addressed by the
IPP WG. It was pointed out during the discussion of the solution that we
need multiple values for security mechanisms used, as e.g. TLS and Digest
Authentication may both be used together. This will be fixed in the next
draft. There were no comments on the current draft
<draft-ietf-ipp-ipp-scheme-00.txt>. Also see slides for further details.

Larry Masinter led a discussion on interoperability between IPP and IFax.
There seemed to be sufficient interest in this subject to justify writing an
informational document that gives advice to implementors of IPP/IFax
gateways or implementation of both protocols in the same system or device.
One person offered to become the editor of such a document. It is not
planned to introduce this subject as an official part of either the IPP or
IFax WGs charter, but it is expected to be developed in collaboration
between these two groups. See slides for further details.

Meeting adjourned early.

Tom,

I didn't see an email notice on the telecon. What is the phone number?

I am guessing that the time is 10AM PDT and the passcode is CMANROS.

(I am also testing to see if I am still on the IPP server.)

The HTTP working group has reached rough consensus within the working group
to advance the two documents:

   draft-ietf-http-v11-spec-rev-05.txt, ps 9/15/1998
   draft-ietf-http-authentication-03.txt 9/14/1998

to Draft Standards status. This message is the official request for
advancement by the IESG.

Subject: PWG-ANNOUNCE> November Meeting

Hello PWG Members,

I have started planning our Meetings in November.

Unfortunately the meeting space in Phoenix was limited and the one Hotel
that did have rooms, was not willing to accommodate our billing process.

The good news is that I was able to secure space at the Tucson Marriott
University Park in Tucson Arizona (still in the southwest near Phoenix and
closer to Nogales).
http://www.marriott.com/marriott/TUSUP/

Also it seems that the southwest is popular in November, I think a lot of folks
like to get away from the Snow, so we would do well to make reservations early.

I should have more details in the next week or two.
Feel free to ping now if you want, with the usual information

Name:
Meetings you will attend:
If staying at the Marriott: Arrival & Departure Date
