I think it does as long as you don't look at any other fields than source,
destination and information.

Each packet has source, destination, a bunch of other headers and finally
the information that it carries. On the receiving side, one records the
packets and for each arriving packet, one checks if one has arrived before
with the same source, destination and information (within the time-out
interval). If so, it is a duplicate. If not, it isn't.

The real question, I think, is whether there can be cases where the source
intentionally sends multiple packets with the same src, dst and information
(but something different in the other headers).

Henk

so what if there is no information, such as with pure TCP ACKs?

I wonder - since IPPM is doing metrics for IP - if we can define
duplication only in terms of the IP header fields?

Hi Lars,

Well, if there is nothing to distinguish two packets that were
intentionally sent over a packet that has been replicated along
the way, then one cannot use this metric. For active measurements
between two hosts, this won't be an issues as one generates his own
packets and can easily put something in to make them unique.
For other metrics, we haven't defined the packet format or how to
do this either.

If one wants to apply the metric for other cases (say, passive monitoring
of TCP sequences), then one will have to find something in the packets
to distinguish two packets from one packet sent twice. I'm open to
suggestions here.

Henk

The IESG has received a request from the IP Performance Metrics WG
(ippm) to consider the following document:

- 'Information Model and XML Data Model for Traceroute Measurements '
   <draft-ietf-ippm-storetraceroutes-10.txt> as a Proposed Standard

This is the second IETF last call for this document. The gen-art review
that happened during the IETF last call of a previous version uncovered
significant issues that needed to be addressed by the working group.
The working group has done so and a working group last call on this
version has confirmed consensus to request publication of this version.
Due to the magnitude of the changes, a second IETF last call is required
as well.

The IESG plans to make a decision in the next few weeks, and solicits
final comments on this action. Please send substantive comments to the
ietf@ietf.org mailing lists by 2008-07-18. Exceptionally,
comments may be sent to iesg@ietf.org instead. In either case, please
retain the beginning of the Subject line to allow automated sorting.

The file can be obtained via
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-storetraceroutes-10.txt

IESG discussion can be tracked via
https://datatracker.ietf.org/public/pidtracker.cgi?command=view_id&dTag=14961&rfc_flag=0

This discussion seems to have stopped here.

The text says that active measurement systems MUST NOT send packets with
identical information fields, in order to avoid that all packets are
declared duplicates. That is sufficient to use this metric in this
case. The metric will also work for passive methods where one is sure
that each packet is different. The metric won't work for cases where
multiple identical packets are intentionally sent.

In order to move forward:

a) We accept this (and add text to make this clear to everybody).

b) We don't accept this. In that case, one will have to find something
to distinguish two packets from one packet sent twice.

My preference is for the former, but I like to hear other opinions. I'm
afraid that if we don't accept this and don't come up with good suggestions
to distinguish packets, we'll never end up with a duplication metric.

Hi,

I did my AD review during WGLC. On a technical level, this document is
ready to be published.

However, I'd still like to urge the authors to take the time to
produce another revision that focuses on improving the writing and
language. Some sections, especially the earlier ones, are quite
difficult to follow due to awkward phrasings, grammar issues, and so
on. Other sections are in much better shape, for example, Sections 7,
8, and much of 9 are very well written. The document would be much
improved if other sections were of similar language quality. Although
the RFC Editor would also fix some of these issues, I feel that this
won't be quite sufficient in this case.

Also note that this isn't a blocking issue. If the WG comes to
consensus to request publication of this version as-is, I will bring
it before the IESG in its current form. (But obviously I'd prefer an
update.)

Lars

Detailed comments:

Note: Most comments marked as nits below have been automatically
flagged by review scripts - there may be some false positives in
   there.

INTRODUCTION, paragraph 11:
 > The IETF IP Performance Metrics (IPPM) working group has
standardized
 > metrics for measuring end-to-end performance between two points.

Please rephrase to not talk about the IPPM WG - WGs are ephemeral and
WG history is rarely relevant for a published RFC. (Also elsewhere in
the document, e.g., the introduction, etc.)

Suggest to move this section into an appendix, because it's outside
the scope of the proposed standard.

"This" appears twice in the last section, which makes it ambigous. Do
you mean that when the definitions from RFC2679 are used, they're
   marked with an asterisk?

Section 4.1., paragraph 2:
 > Sections 3.5 to 3.8 of [RFC2679] give requirements and

Why isn't this a MUST? (Also, nit "be respectful of" is an awkward
phrasing - just say "respect".) This also occurs elsewhere in the
   document.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Packet Delay Variation Applicability Statement
	Author(s) : A. Morton, B. Claise
	Filename : draft-ietf-ippm-delay-var-as-01.txt
	Pages : 39
	Date : 2008-07-13

Packet delay variation metrics appear in many different standards
documents. The metric definition in RFC 3393 has considerable
flexibility, and it allows multiple formulations of delay variation
through the specification of different packet selection functions.

Although flexibility provides wide coverage and room for new ideas,
it can make comparisons of independent implementations more
difficult. Two different formulations of delay variation have come
into wide use in the context of active measurements. This memo
examines a range of circumstances for active measurements of delay
variation and their uses, and recommends which of the two forms is
best matched to particular conditions and tasks.

This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Spatial Composition of Metrics
	Author(s) : A. Morton, E. Stephan
	Filename : draft-ietf-ippm-spatial-composition-07.txt
	Pages : 26
	Date : 2008-07-13

This memo utilizes IPPM metrics that are applicable to both complete
paths and sub-paths, and defines relationships to compose a complete
path metric from the sub-path metrics with some accuracy w.r.t. the
actual metrics. This is called Spatial Composition in RFC 2330. The
memo refers to the Framework for Metric Composition, and provides
background and motivation for combining metrics to derive others.
The descriptions of several composed metrics and statistics follow.

I'd personally prefer to come up with a definition of what a duplicate
is that uses only IP header information, rather than having
dependencies on higher layers. Source and destination IP address plus
the IP ID field ought to do it? (For non-fragments, at least.) Also
see http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-touch-intarea-ipv4-unique-id

I don't know what I was thinking. The check would need to look at
pretty much all header fields other than the TTL and checksum. (And
possibly DSCP, because a duplicate could have been routed along a
different path and gotten remarked.)

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

	Author(s) : S. Shalunov, M. Swany

The aim of this document is to define a small set of metrics that are
robust, easy to understand, orthogonal, relevant, and easy to
compute. The IPPM WG has defined a large number of richly
parameterized metrics because network measurement has many purposes.
Often, the ultimate purpose is to report a concise set of metrics
describing a network's state to an end user. It is for this purpose
that the present set of metrics is defined.

Session 2: IPPM++, BoF on future work for the group
====================================================
(Wednesday, 30/6, 9:00-11:30)

In Philadelphia, we discussed the future of the group now that we get
close to finishing the work that is on our plate. We had some
discussion on possible future work items. In Philly, people did suggest
to have a BoF to discuss this in Dublin. We have a slot, so let's start
to discuss...

   1. Administrative details.
   2. What did IPPM do so-far (Chairs)
   3. Possible future work items.
      a) SLA validations (Joel Sommers or Nick Duffield, by Proxy)
      b) Passive measurements (Yutaka Kikuchi)
         (draft-kikuchi-passive-measure-02.txt, and
          draft-kikuchi-tunnel-measure-req-02.txt)
      c) Comparison of Metrics
      d) Other possible work items
   4. Discussion.
   5. How to proceed from here.

If you have work that fits into section 3, please let me know and I'll
give you a slot on the agenda.

However, note that the goal of the BoF is to determine if there are
problems that needs to be solved _and_ there is a critical mass of
people who want to work on this. The goal of the BoF is NOT to
discuss possible solutions in great detail. For more on how to make
the BoF a success, see:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-narten-successful-bof-03.txt

Note: if you have slides, please mail them to the chairs before the meeting.

A message from <ippm-archive@lists.ietf.org> to:
-> iearn-srilanka@lists.iearn.org

was considered unsolicited bulk e-mail (UBE).

Our internal reference code for your message is 10376-11/zi7-MJnDgkSQ

The message carried your return address, so it was either a genuine mail
from you, or a sender address was faked and your e-mail address abused
by third party, in which case we apologize for undesired notification.

We do try to minimize backscatter for more prominent cases of UBE and
for infected mail, but for less obvious cases of UBE some balance
between losing genuine mail and sending undesired backscatter is sought,
and there can be some collateral damage on both sides.

The slides we've received for today's IPPM++ (next steps BOF) and IPPM
meeting are online at:

http://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/72/materials.html

For remote participation, audio stream information can be found at:

http://videolab.uoregon.edu/events/ietf

and jabber information is at:

http://jabber.ietf.org

There is both an ippm++ and ippm room, for the BOF and WG respectively.
I'll try to be looking at both, just in case the ++ bothers some
clients (and if it does, let us know).

IPPM,

Here's a ref to the paper I mentioned on why a lack of one-way
monitors that are robust against cheating is holding back Internet
evolution. It concludes operators need "rest-of-path" monitors at
their borders. It is written from an economics perspective.

Also, at the end, I've given two refs to possible solutions to this problem.

No issues were raised on the contents, but we did get some comments on
the wording. Those issues will be addressed, then we'll submit the
document to the IESG. Due to vacations from various folks, this will
not happen before September.
