Hello Henk,

currently, the text of the metric advancement draft contains a new =
implementation requirement:

"An IPPM compliant metric implementation whose measurement requires
synchronized clocks is however expected to provide precise =
measurement
results. Any IPPM metric implementation MUST be of a precision of 1 =
ms
(+/- 500 us) with a confidence of 95% if the metric is captured =
along
an Internet path which is stable and not congested during a
measurement duration of an hour or more."

Are we in a position to specify new implementation requirements in this =
document?

If not, do we have to remove "requirement lanuage" and content entirely =
or can this=20
content stay, if is softened up (either SHOULD or content without =
requirement=20
language?).

Regards,

Ruediger

I did read through the 1st version and it looked fine - content wise

I will say it seems a bit funny to be quoting an expired ID =
(bradner-metrictest)
I'd suggest just take the text and put an acknowledgement in somewhere
and drop the note that the ID is being quoted

I've reviewed the "TWAMP Reflect-Octets and Symmetrical Size Features"
draft, and agree that these capabilities are worthwhile as new features
for the core protocol. I believe that the specification of the features
is complete and should result in inter-operable implementations.

Dear IPPM members,

I've just uploaded the reviewed version of the metric test=20
draft, which may be found under

http://www.ietf.org/id/draft-geib-ippm-metrictest-02.txt

As a next step, I'd like to suggest making this document a WG=20
draft. So I invite more readers to have a look at the draft.

Henk, I won't be able to participate at the Anaheim meeting.=20
Al however plans to be there and he agreed to present the draft.

Thanks to my co-author Al Morton, who was pretty active this=20
time. Thanks also to Carol Davids (who kindly reviewed the=20
-01 version on request of Henk). Version -02 should be more=20
comprehensible.

Regards,

Ruediger

A new version of I-D, draft-geib-ippm-metrictest-02.txt has been=20
successfuly submitted by Ruediger Geib and posted to the IETF =
repository.

Filename: draft-geib-ippm-metrictest
Revision: 02
Title: IPPM standard advancement testing
Creation_date: 2010-02-11
WG ID: Independent Submission
Number_of_pages: 25

Abstract:
This document specifies tests to determine if multiple independent
instantiations of a performance metric RFC have implemented the
specifications in the same way. This is the performance metric
equivalent of interoperability, required to advance RFCs along the
standards track. Results from different implementations of metric
RFCs will be collected under the same underlying network conditions
and compared using state of the art statistical methods. The goal is
an evaluation of the metric RFC itself, whether its definitions are
clear and unambiguous to implementors and therefore a candidate for
advancement on the IETF standards track.
                                                                         =

IPPM group,

In Hiroshima, Barry presented possible new work on

   TCP Throughput Testing Methodology
   http://www.ietf.org/id/draft-constantine-ippm-tcp-throughput-tm-00.txt

We'd like to know if you feel that this is work that the IPPM group
should pick up and, if so, who is interested to contribute to this
document. Please post your thoughts before January 4, 2010.

Matt & Henk

I think you are though I don't quite see why you would put this requirement
into a document. The 1 ms makes perfect sense if you are measuring delays
in the O(100) ms range. It doesn't make much sense if they are much shorter
(say, 10 km of fiber on a roll between devices) or on voip traffic between
here and Mars.

Also, I can imagine a situation where I have some "quick and dirty" device
and a precision measurement installation. The Q&D might give rough results,
but I'd like to know if they have any value at all.

So, I'd either explain why or put it in as a should.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Individual Session Control Feature for TWAMP
	Author(s) : A. Morton, M. Chiba
	Filename : draft-ietf-ippm-twamp-session-cntrl-03.txt
	Pages : 18
	Date : 2010-02-17

The IETF has completed its work on the core specification of TWAMP -
the Two-Way Active Measurement Protocol. This memo describes a new
feature for TWAMP, that gives the controlling host the ability to
start and stop one or more individual test sessions using Session
Identifiers. The base capability of the TWAMP protocol requires all
test sessions previously requested and accepted to start and stop at
the same time.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-twamp-session-cntrl-03.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP at:
ftp://ftp.ietf.org/internet-drafts/

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Lars, IESG-secretary,

The IPPM WG requests publication of draft-ietf-ippm-twamp-session-cntrl-03.txt
on the standards track. The sheperd write-up for the document is below.

Henk

- - - -

(1.a) Who is the Document Shepherd for this document? Has the
Document Shepherd personally reviewed this version of the
document and, in particular, does he or she believe this
version is ready for forwarding to the IESG for publication?

Document sheperd is Henk Uijterwaal. He would not have bothered to write
this note if he didn't believe that the document was ready for publication.

(1.b) Has the document had adequate review both from key WG members
         and from key non-WG members?

This is a small feature request. About half a dozen people have read the
document and confirmed that this request will work without affecting current
implementations. The request itself seems to be a useful enhancement.

(1.c) Does the Document Shepherd have concerns that the document
needs more review from a particular or broader perspective,

No.

(1.d) Does the Document Shepherd have any specific concerns or
issues with this document that the Responsible Area Director
and/or the IESG should be aware of?

No, there are no such concerns.

(1.e) How solid is the WG consensus behind this document? Does it
represent the strong concurrence of a few individuals, with
others being silent, or does the WG as a whole understand and
         agree with it?

Decent, with some 6 members of the group reviewing it.

(1.f) Has anyone threatened an appeal or otherwise indicated extreme
         discontent?

No.

(1.g) Has the Document Shepherd personally verified that the
         document satisfies all ID nits?

All except a complaint about the boilerplate. This can be fixed by
the editor easily.

(1.h) Has the document split its references into normative and
informative? Are there normative references to documents that
are not ready for advancement or are otherwise in an unclear
         state?

Yes, draft-ietf-ippm-twamp-reflect-octets. This draft has an ETA
of Q1/2010.

(1.i) Has the Document Shepherd verified that the document IANA
consideration section exists and is consistent with the body
         of the document?

Yes, it exists and appears to be complete and consistent

(1.j) Has the Document Shepherd verified that sections of the
document that are written in a formal language, such as XML
code, BNF rules, MIB definitions, etc., validate correctly in
         an automated checker?

N/A.

(1.k) The IESG approval announcement includes a Document
Announcement Write-Up. Please provide such a Document
Announcement Write-Up? Recent examples can be found in the
"Action" announcements for approved documents. The approval
         announcement contains the following sections:

      Technical Summary
The IETF has completed its work on the core specification of TWAMP -
the Two-Way Active Measurement Protocol. This memo describes a new
feature for TWAMP, that gives the controlling host the ability to
start and stop one or more individual test sessions using Session
Identifiers. The base capability of the TWAMP protocol requires all
test sessions previously requested and accepted to start and stop at
    the same time.

      Working Group Summary
The normal WG process was followed and the document has been discussed for
several years. The document as it is now, reflects WG consensus, with nothing
special worth noticing.

      Document Quality
Good

I concluded (when looking at the latest update) that draft*reflect-octets
was an Informative reference. Although there are some interactions
identified, it's possible to implement draft*session-cntrl compliant
implementations without ever looking at draft*reflect-octets.

So, I moved draft*reflect-octets to the Informative list, but
will move it back if others feel that was a mistake. One citation
to consider is below (from section 3.1). Other citations describe
reflect-octets as "nice to have".

Al

If the Control-Client has selected the Reflect Octets feature
    [I-D.ietf-ippm-twamp-reflect-octets] in combination with the
Individual Session Control feature (after the Server identified its
capability), AND utilizes the feature to insert a locally-specified
request number in the Request-TW-Session command, THEN the Control
Client MAY send more than one Request-TW-Session command to a given
Server without waiting for the corresponding Accept-Session message.
In such a case the Access-Session response reflects the locally-
specified request number. Note that when the Reflect Octets feature
is being used all Request-TW-Session command and Accept-Session
responses MUST include the locally-specified request number.

Hello IPPM members,

I just posted a new version of the TCP Throughput testing methodology, whic=
h may be found under:

http://www.ietf.org/id/draft-constantine-ippm-tcp-throughput-tm-01.txt

A group of IPPM members spent a good deal of time on this effort and we loo=
k forward to review and feedback from other IPPM members.

In summary, this methodology is intended to enable network providers to con=
duct TCP throughput measurements using a standard test flow. Conducting RF=
C2544 is the precursor to this test flow.

We studied much TCP work that had been done by the IPPM over the years and =
have attempted to define a test method to verify the maximum achievable TCP=
throughput that an network provider could expect in a managed network.

Look to forward to comments and suggestions.

Thanks,
Barry

Summary: Almost ready. Issues below are straightforward to address - =
either revise the document or provide me with an RFC Editor Note.

Section 1., paragraph 4:
> Implementers of this feature may also wish to implement the =
"Reflect
> Octets" feature, described in [I-D.ietf-ippm-twamp-reflect-octets].

Suggest to add something like "once the RFC has been published."

Section 1., paragraph 6:
> This memo is intended to be an update to the TWAMP RFC.

Then you need an "Updates: 5357" header in the boilerplate. It would
also be good to clarify in the text that that means that this
extensions becomes mandatory to implement for all TWMP implementations
(i.e., it is non-optional.) Oh, and add a reference to RFC5357 to this
  statement.

Section 3.7., paragraph 2:
> If this feature is adopted, the last ???? bits of the Modes 32-bit

Do you mean "used" instead of "adopted"? Also, ???? needs to be
  clarified.

Section 8.2., paragraph 2:
> [x] "".

  Remove.

what the "Updates" header means is unfortunately not well defined. To =
some, "Updates X" in document Y means "if you have implemented X, you =
now also need to implement Y to remain compliant." To others, it just =
means "if you implemented X you probably now also want to read Y".

The IESG is working on a statement that hopes to clarify the different =
interpretations. Personally, I'm more of a subscriber to the first =
viewpoint.

For RFC5618, we have no issue, because although it says that it updates =
RFC5357, it's very clear from the text that it is an OPTIONAL extension. =
In other words, it's more or a "also read this" update.

mechanism.

We can do the same here, also for consistency: add an "Updates: 5357" =
header, but then in the text make it very clear that this is an OPTIONAL =
extension that is not required to implement for TWAMP compliance.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Individual Session Control Feature for TWAMP
	Author(s) : A. Morton, M. Chiba
	Filename : draft-ietf-ippm-twamp-session-cntrl-04.txt
	Pages : 18
	Date : 2010-02-28

The IETF has completed its work on the core specification of TWAMP -
the Two-Way Active Measurement Protocol. This memo describes an
OPTIONAL feature for TWAMP, that gives the controlling host the
ability to start and stop one or more individual test sessions using
Session Identifiers. The base capability of the TWAMP protocol
requires all test sessions previously requested and accepted to start
and stop at the same time.

The IETF has completed its work on the core specification of TWAMP -
the Two-Way Active Measurement Protocol. This memo describes two
closely-related features for TWAMP: an optional capability where the
responder host returns some of the command octets or padding octets
to the controller, and an optional sender packet format that ensures
equal test packet sizes are used in both directions.
