A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Spatial Composition of Metrics
	Author(s) : A. Morton, E. Stephan
	Filename : draft-ietf-ippm-spatial-composition-14.txt
	Pages : 29
	Date : 2010-07-01

This memo utilizes IP Performance Metrics that are applicable to both
complete paths and sub-paths, and defines relationships to compose a
complete path metric from the sub-path metrics with some accuracy
w.r.t. the actual metrics. This is called Spatial Composition in RFC
2330. The memo refers to the Framework for Metric Composition, and
provides background and motivation for combining metrics to derive
others. The descriptions of several composed metrics and statistics
follow.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : IPPM standard advancement testing
	Author(s) : R. Geib, et al.
	Filename : draft-ietf-ippm-metrictest-00.txt
	Pages : 36
	Date : 2010-07-02

This document specifies tests to determine if multiple independent
instantiations of a performance metric RFC have implemented the
specifications in the same way. This is the performance metric
equivalent of interoperability, required to advance RFCs along the
standards track. Results from different implementations of metric
RFCs will be collected under the same underlying network conditions
and compared using state of the art statistical methods. The goal is
an evaluation of the metric RFC itself, whether its definitions are
clear and unambiguous to implementors and therefore a candidate for
advancement on the IETF standards track.

IPPM Group,

The Maastricht agenda has this entry:

7. Metrics registry (25)
   = Intro (Henk)
   = draft-morton-ippm-rfc4148-obsolete (Al)
   = draft-stephan-ippm-registry-ext (Emile)
   = Discussion

The background of this is the following: in RFC 4148, a registry for the IPPM
metrics has been introduced. This registry has seen very little use over the
years, mainly because the registry does not allow to store the parameters used
for every metric. That the registry isn't widely used, is best witnessed when
RFC 5644 was published and a typo was introduced in the registry. Any parser
would have detected this syntax error. Yet, it took more than 8 months before
somebody noticed. Also, the author of the original document agrees that the
registry needs to be improved.

The question is how to proceed here. There are several options:

 a. Withdraw the current registry. This is proposed in
    draft-morton-ippm-rfc4148-obsolete.

 b. Expand the current registry in order to make it more useful.
    This is proposed in draft-stephan-ippm-registry-ext.

 c. Drop the current registry, start with a new one from scratch.

The plan is to have 2 presentations of the draft (about 5 minutes each),
followed by a discussion.

Comments, both to the list and at the meeting, are welcome,

Henk

Do you plan do add inaccuracy introduced by runtime on each
implementation ?=20
Do you plan to you plan to test implementation that
will not follow IETF OWAMP (or TWAMP) RFC but will largely inspired by
them (NAT friendliness of theses RFC make them difficult to follow
when you want to send probes from the network edge et behind a CPE) ?

Sorry, but it's not clear to me where your comment applies.

Each of the metric RFCs cover error sources and error reporting,
so (if I understand your question) this is one of the areas to
check and see if implementing developers understood the requirements.

Yes, this draft starts from the premise that measurement results from
different implementations will be compared. Neither OWAMP or TWAMP
are required.

Hi,
=20
RFC 4148 initiated an IANA registry =
(http://www.iana.org/assignments/ianaippmmetricsregistry-mib) for =
identifying each metric the IPPM WG defines. Currently it contains 70 =
metrics.
=20
The WG started a process to reexamine the need to continue to feed this =
registry.
=20
I suggest the following for starting the discussion.=20
=20
The usage:
Is the current Registry not used?
How can we be sure than the current registry is not used?=20
=20
The need:
Is it not used because there is not need for a registry at all?
=20
The content:
Is it not used because it only numbers the metrics?
Is it not used because it does not describe metrics options and =
parameters?
=20
The language:
Is it not used because it is written for MIB compiler (SMIv2)?
=20
The future:
Should we consult the WGs working on interfaces which exchange network =
performance information?
What are these WGs?
=20
Current suggestions:

I'm not a math guru but I wanted to know if the proposed draft will
take in account inaccuracy on timestamping that come only from the
runtime. For example, we have some Proof of Concept code (probecraft :
http://github.com/lucasdicioccio/probecraft ) that is able to send most
of the known active probes, but we have chosen on the implementation
side to rely only on lipcap and its timestamping capability on packets :
the wire-time is what lipcap give us. It's a design choice. If the
kernel has a lot of packets to treat, the desired time series for
some sort of probe will not be followed as requested. If lipcap is able
to use some kernel facilities to bypass buffering or routing table,
we can minimize runtime inaccuracy. =20

There is other bias that can be introduced on the probing src host that
can invalid the probe (ARP cache, etc.). The probing src host can be
very noisy ...=20

Speaking as myself, not WG-chair:

We can't, though I don't see this as the biggest issue. If one looks at
the IANA site, there are more registries that have been obsoleted. If
this happens, IANA marks the registry as such and adds a note that no
new registrations are accepted. Whatever is there on the day it is
obsoleted, remains there. In other words, if there is somebody who
depends on this file, then the file will be there forever.

> The need:
> Is it not used because there is not need for a registry at all?

As WG chair:

I think this is the most important question. If/when we want to declare
consensus on the new registry format, it should be clear that there is a
need for a registry in the format we've specified by then. If not, then
why bother to standardize it?

And in order to find out what the need is, it would be good if people
who are using the current registry, or who considered using it but
decided against it, spoke up.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : TCP Throughput Testing Methodology
	Author(s) : B. Constantine, et al.
	Filename : draft-ietf-ippm-tcp-throughput-tm-04.txt
	Pages : 20
	Date : 2010-07-09

This memo describes a methodology for measuring sustained TCP
throughput performance in an end-to-end managed network environment.
This memo is intended to provide a practical approach to help users
validate the TCP layer performance of a managed network, which should
provide a better indication of end-user application level experience.
In the methodology, various TCP and network parameters are identified
that should be tested as part of the network verification at the TCP
layer.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP at:
ftp://ftp.ietf.org/internet-drafts/

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

The following errata report has been submitted for RFC5644,
"IP Performance Metrics (IPPM): Spatial and Multicast".

--------------------------------------
You may review the report below and at:
http://www.rfc-editor.org/errata_search.php?rfc=5644&eid=2321

--------------------------------------
Type: Editorial
Reported by: Cypryan T. Klish II <cklish@harris.com>

Section: 2.7

Original Text
-------------
Figure 2 is ambiguous for two reasons:

Use "X" for both types of nodes: 1) the graphic only labels intermediate nodes with "X" and 2) both "nodes that are points of interest" and "nodes that are not points of interest" are label "X" in the note following the graphic. Thus there is no difference between nodes that are points of interest and those that are not, and the distinction between the two types is not apparent

The destination node "Dst" has no representation in the "Hosts" identifier column. the "Dst" label is in the same vertical column as the Hosts

Corrected Text
--------------
Change a subset of intermediate nodes (all currently labeled X) to "Y". Change the second line of the note to read "'Y' are nodes thatare not points of interest.

Shift the "Hosts column to the left to provide vertical separation for "Dst". Label "Dst" as "K" in the hosts column.

Notes
-----
It would be useful to clarify if the nodes that are points of interest must be contiguous or if the subset can truly be selected in an arbitrary fashion. For a contiguous subset of point of interest nodes it is suggested that it would be useful to associate this with a higher abstract architectural construct (container) since the group might well align with a physical or administrative segment, or provider specific segment of the network. This would aid in modeling the system for performance management applications since a one to one relationship can be created between the higher level container object and the segment object

The figure uses "X" and "x". These are different, even though I agree that
the difference can be hard to see if you don't look carefully. X and Y would
have been clearer.

The way I read the diagram, is that there is a path "src 1 2 3 ... J dst".

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Reporting IP Performance Metrics to Users
	Author(s) : S. Shalunov, M. Swany
	Filename : draft-ietf-ippm-reporting-05.txt
	Pages : 42
	Date : 2010-07-12

The aim of this document is to define a small set of metrics that are
robust, easy to understand, orthogonal, relevant, and easy to
compute. The IPPM WG has defined a large number of richly
parameterized metrics because network measurement has many purposes.
Often, the ultimate purpose is to report a concise set of metrics
describing a network's current state to an end user. It is for this
purpose that the present set of metrics is defined, and the document
is principally concerned with "short-term" reporting considerations
(a few seconds or minutes as opposed to days, months or years.)

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-reporting-05.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP at:
ftp://ftp.ietf.org/internet-drafts/

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

IPPM group,

The agenda for Maastricht has been posted at:

   http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/78/agenda/ippm.txt

Please note:

1. If you are presenting, then send us your slides in advance. This will
be greatly appreciated by folks attending the session remotely.

2. The agenda is very full. This means that Matt and I will run a
strict time schedule and stop speakers if they run over time.

3. We need volunteers to scribe and follow the jabber room. You can save
the meeting a few minutes of embarrasing silence by voluntering for
these jobs beforehand, just drop us a note.

Matt & Henk

Dear WG,

at the upcoming IPPM meeting in Maastricht we will present a draft about mu=
lticast performance monitoring (draft-bipi-mboned-ip-multicast-pm-requireme=
nt-01).

The draft was presented for the first time in Stockolm (IETF 75) in MBONED =
and describes the requirements for monitoring IP Multicast traffic on ISP n=
etworks in terms of packet loss, one-way delay and jitter. There are also 2=
separate solution drafts describing how the monitoring can be performed on=
 real multicast streams.

At the last IETF in Anaheim, during the presentation in MBONED, it was rais=
ed the point that the requirements described in the draft are not only spec=
ific to multicast traffic but are more general and therefore there could be=
WGs other than MBONED where the draft could be discussed as well. For this=
reason it was suggested to present it also elsewhere.

We are aware that currently the IPPM charter includes only metrics develope=
d inside an active measurement context while our drafts refer to passive me=
asurements (monitoring of real traffic). However we know that there was in =
the past a proposal about including in the charter also passive measurement=
s.
By presenting the draft in IPPM we would like to ask the working group a fe=
edback on the draft itself and a help understanding whether this work could=
be of interest for IPPM. If not, we would appreciate comments/suggestion a=
bout which WG would be the most suitable for this work.

Below you can find the pointer to the drafts.

IPPM Group,

Last Monday, Alberto and others presented this set of drafts:

> > at the upcoming IPPM meeting in Maastricht we will present a draft about
> > multicast performance monitoring
> > (draft-bipi-mboned-ip-multicast-pm-requirement-01).
> > Requirement draft:
> > http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-bipi-mboned-ip-multicast-pm-requirement-01
> > Solution drafts:
> > http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-liu-mboned-multicast-realstream-monitor-02
> > http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-cociglio-mboned-multicast-pm-00

We would like to know if people consider this topic appropriate for
the IPPM WG, and if so, if there is interest to work on this topic.

The drafts discuss passive measurements of actual traffic streams, using
the metrics developed in IPPM. In the current charter, this work is
out of scope, so picking it up would require a charter change. Obviously,
we only want to do this if there is sufficient interest in the work.

Please respond to the list or the chairs in private by September 13.

Matt & Henk
