Hi all

Yoav,

I think preserving the history is worthwhile. I'm fine with moving section
7 to an appendix. With
that said Tero will still object to the text that would become A1.4
(currently 7.4). The text in
Section 7.4 represents our opinion which is not the same as his. I think
the text should be
modified to acknowledge that some implementations may reduce their timeout
due to INVALID_SPI
or INVALID_IKE_SPI, but we feel this still results in an unnecessary delay
that could be eliminated
with use of QCD tokens. I suggest the following replacement text:

Some implementations require fewer retransmissions over a
shorter period of time for cases of liveness check started because of
   an INVALID_SPI or INVALID_IKE_SPI notification.

We believe that the default retransmission policy should represent a
good balance between the need for a timely discovery of a dead peer,
and a low probability of false detection. We expect the policy to be
set to take the shortest time such that this probability achieves a
certain target. Therefore, we believe that reducing the elapsed time
and retransmission count may create an unacceptably high probability of
false detection, and this can be triggered by a single INVALID_IKE_SPI
   notification.

Additionally, even if the retransmission policy is reduced to, say,
one minute, it is still a very noticeable delay from a human
perspective, from the time that the gateway has come up (i.e. is able to

respond with an INVALID_SPI or INVALID_IKE_SPI notification) and until
the
tunnels are active, or from the time the backup gateway has taken
over until the tunnels are active. The use of QCD tokens can reduce
this
   delay.

I'd like to return to this failover counter. It's the single issue in the
protocol which I don't like. The reasons are, first, that it makes an
assumption how clustering and sync has been implemented, that is this
value has to be synced in the cluster and the protocol cannot work without
it, and second, that the protocol itself becomes vulnerable to the very
issues it tries to combat, namely the fact that sync messages can be
dropped.

Consider for example three node cluster where node 1 fails. Node 2
increments the failover counter but fails to sync it to node 3 (the packet
is dropped or node 2 fails immediately itself). Node 3 now hasn't the
updated failover counter and will create a request that is effectively a
replay.

The draft has the following text:

In case multiple successive failover events and sync request getting
lost, the failover count value at peer will not be updated and new
standby member will become active with incremented failover count
value. So, peer can receive valid failover count value which is not
just incremented by 1 in case of multiple failover. Accepting
incremented failover count within a range is allowed and increases
   interoperability.

Which is vague, and I don't even completely understand what it tries to
tell here. In case of multiple failovers the failover counter might *not*
be incremented at all because the sync may have been dropped.

I think the protocol should not have a feature that depends on the sync
itself working. That's the very issue it tries to fix in HA, the fact
that IKE SA message IDs in failover may be in desync. The failover
counter may be in desync as well. And if implementations are expected to
be lax about the value (due to the issues listed above) then it doesn't
really provide replay protection either.

I think we should try to find alternative methods to combat the replay of
requests. Here's some thoughts:

o Some kind of expiration timestamp to requests. Not sure how easy or
practical it would be to implement but would not require any sync
   expectations.

o Request could always propose message_id + delta, so that if it is
replayed it's already too old and can be detected. This is something
that Yaron suggested as well, I believe. It does have some issues,
some of them already discussed earlier.

Some other way?

	Pekka

Depends how we define failover counter. If we define so it is
monotonously increasing counter which can skip forward there are ways
to do it without syncing the information. As most of the sync
protocols already have either timestamps or some kind of message ids
using those as failover counter would work. I.e. in the simplest case
just use last failover time as failover counter.

There is no reason for failover counter to increment by one for every
failover, its value just needs to be bigger than the previous failover
counter so we can detect whether this is old failover message or
whether it is something we haven't seen before.

So the node 2 should first agree that it really is the one who is
going to take care of the failing node 1 traffic, thus it needs to
communiate with node 3 and agree on that (to prevent both node 2 and
node 3 acting as failover hosts). During this communication it can
also sync the failover counter.

Also if node 3 just detects that node 2 crashed by snooping the
traffic, then it can also snoop the IKEv2 message ID sync messages and
get the failover counter from there (it do have the keying material to
decrypt the IKEv2 messages if it is going to be acting as failover
node).

I think that text tries to say that as the node 2 might have synced
with node 3, but it might be that it failed before it actually managed
to send out IKEV2_MESSAGE_ID_SYNC message, thus other end never knows
that node 2 was active at all, and the first thing they see is the
message from node 3, where the failover counter is incremented twice.

I think the current text should be clear that failover counter can be
incremented by any number, and message is accepted if failover counter
is larger than any previous failover counter node has seen.

This kind of text would allow using for example timestamp instead of
failover counters, on those clusters where they do have good enough
synced clocks.

That's a good point, but there's still the receiving end that has to
consistently be able to determine whether given failover counter is replay
or not. Let say, both ends are clusters, this means that the receiving
end has to somehow sync the information between its nodes. Otherwise its
nodes might not know which value is old and which isn't (for example due
to failover or load balancing). Unless, of course, this is somekind of
timestamp (an actual clock or something like that) that can be
consistently verified also at the receiving end without syncing.

On the other hand, I do say that this is better than what it is now in the
draft; even if the receiving end has to sync it and fails to do so
properly the protocol still works, it just opens a possibilty for a replay
attack.

Here it usually would be determined by the IKE SAs that were "owned" by
node 1 that are now owned by node 2. It's quite possible, by the way,
that both node 2 and node 3 can now "own" some of node 1's IKE SAs, and
have to perform the HA protocol for those independently. This would be a
cluster were all nodes are "online" and one of them fails. The case
described in the draft is a hot stanbdy cluster case where only one node
is online and others are standby until the online node fails. This would
imply that the standby node that becomes online after failover gets all of
the SAs of the failed node.

All this is implementation specific. Though, in my opinion the protocol
should be able to work in all scenarios, including in one were multiple
nodes independently perform HA protocol for their IKE SAs (a case not
described in the draft currently. This would change the original scope of
the draft from hot standby cluster case to include online cluster case
were load balancing change (failover, online/offline transition or other
artificial load balancing change) re-balances SAs among multiple online
nodes).

I agree, but it needs to be carefully defined so that the receiver can

Hi all

An issue that has come up on this mailing list, and also in Beijing, is wha=
t implementations should assume either of the two roles (token maker and to=
ken taker).

The current text is in section 9.1, and is summarized as follows:
o For remote-access clients it makes sense to implement the token
      taker role.
o For remote-access gateways it makes sense to implement the token
      maker role.
o For inter-domain VPN gateway it makes sense to implement both
roles, because it can't be known in advance where the traffic
      originates.
o It is perfectly valid to implement both roles in any case, for
example when using a single library or a single gateway to perform
      several roles.

Tero's comments were that the interdomain case (bullet #3) was not interest=
ing (issue #201), because in inter-domain VPN, both sides can start an Init=
ial exchange, or that the initiator and responder should only be taker and =
maker respectively (issue #198).

While I think few would argue that a remote access client needs to be a tok=
en maker, there were some people (including all document authors) who argue=
d that QCD is useful for inter-domain, and that it shouldn't matter who was=
the original initiator, because over the life of an SA traffic might shift=
to be initiated on the other side.

I think it's time to resolve this. Do we leave this as-is, or do we cut dow=
n the applicability.

I am in favor of making the protocol simplier to implement and
especially much simplier to test, and restrict the token taker and
token maker roles to initiator and responder respectively.

In site to site VPN case there are more efficient methods for recovery
which are faster than QCD and which are already allowed in IKEv2
specification and do not require special handling from the other end.

I have explained those in my previous emails:

Hello,

Re: Part of RFC 5996 Sec 1.2 that talks about DH retry in the case initiato=
r guesses the wrong DH group in SA INIT

It's not clear to me whether the expectation is for the second SA INIT att=
empt (this time with the DH group hinted at by peer) can start afresh with =
a new IKE cookie pair (message ID 1)
OR
If it must retain the existing cookie pair (message ID 2)

AFAICT either way is acceptable since both achieve the same end. The former=
 seems slightly easier.
Pls correct me though if one approach is strictly the right way. If so then=
 why.

Thanks

Hi Gaurav.

In IKEv2, we don't call them cookies any more, but IKE SPIs. Since you're i=
nitiating, you start with just the initiator IKE SPI (not a pair), and the =
message ID for the first message is zero, not 1.

IKE SA INIT messages always have message ID zero. I would bet that many imp=
lementations rely on this. So you should really use a new initiator IKE SPI=
.

Thanks Yoav for your response.
Yes I was off by one wrt the message IDs.

New IKE SPI sounds reasonable to me too.

Subject: Re: [IPsec] Question about DH retry for IKEv2

So you should really use a new initiator IKE SPI=
.

a new IKE cookie pair (message ID 1)
OR
If it must retain the existing cookie pair (message ID 2)

AFAICT either way is acceptable since both achieve the same end. The former=
 seems slightly easier.
Pls correct me though if one approach is strictly the right way. If so then=
 why.

Hello,

When I install ipsec-tools(the version is 0.7.2),there are some errors as following:

sockmisc.c: In function 'recvfromto':
sockmisc.c:388: error: dereferencing pointer 'ss.46' does break strict-aliasing rules
sockmisc.c:388: note: initialized from here
sockmisc.c:406: error: dereferencing pointer 'ss.47' does break strict-aliasing rules

I have seached these errors in Internet, but didn't found.

So,I need your help.If you can help me,please send the mail to wenrongbupt@gmail.com.

For your letter, I was very grateful .Thank your very much.

Best Regards
Vincent

This is the wrong mailing list to ask about specific pieces of software that implement IPsec. Instead, you need to go to the mailing list for that specific software. This mailing list is for discussing the development of the IPsec protocol.

I am going to close these issues accepting Yoav's proposal from 2010-12-13.

Not only would it be nice, but it would be *really useful to the IPsec community*, if there were more people in the WG who were reading our two remaining documents and commenting on the open issues...

Hi all.=20

Issue #200 is about some text in section 8 ("Interaction with Session Resum=
ption"). The text says that a rebooted peer (and thus a defunct SA) may go =
undetected for the lifetime of the SA. However, RFC 5996 says that at some =
point, a peer that did not receive incoming traffic on a particular IKE SA =
or its children, has to initiate a liveness check.

Here's how I propose to resolve this. Seeing as it's the holiday season, I=
won't close the issue until January 10th, but please get your comments in =
by then.

Existing text:
What Session Resumption does not help is the problem of detecting
that the peer gateway has failed. A failed gateway may go undetected
for as long as the lifetime of a child SA, because IPsec does not
have packet acknowledgement, and applications cannot signal the IPsec
layer that the tunnel "does not work". Before establishing a new IKE
SA using Session Resumption, a client should ascertain that the
gateway has indeed failed. This could be done using either a
liveness check (as in RFC 5996) or using the QCD tokens described in
   this document.

My proposed text:
What Session Resumption does not help is the problem of detecting
that the peer gateway has failed. A failed gateway may go undetected
for an arbitrarily long time, because IPsec does not have packet
acknowledgement, and applications cannot signal the IPsec layer that
the tunnel "does not work". Section 2.4 of RFC 5996 does not specify
how long an implementation needs to wait before beginning a liveness
check, and only says "not recently" (see full quote in Section 2).
In practice some mobile devices wait a very long time before
beginning liveness check, in order to extend battery life by allowing
parts of the device to remain in low-power modes.

QCD tokens provide a way to detect the failure of the peer in the
case where liveness check has not yet ended (or begun).
