Jeff,

Are you saying that a value of "none" would be wrong in this particular
case?

Thanks,
Vishwas

Folks -

Mike Shand and I have submitted V3 of draft-ietf-isis-restart (V2 was
withdrawn from last call at our request). Since we submitted it close to
the deadline, it may take a while for the official announcement to appear.

In addition to making some clarifications based on review comments from the
list, the new version includes the following changes:

1)We now make explicit that the LANID must be ignored in IIHs having the RR
bit set. This is something that implementation experience shows is
necessary. As it affects the bits on the wire (what is sent as LANID by
neighbors of the restarting router) it seemed necessary to explicitly state
this in the draft.

2)New functionality in the case of a starting (NOT restarting) router is
defined to prevent the potential occurrence of transient blackholes due to
the presence in the network of LSP fragments from a previous incarnation of
the starting router.

3)The text in the draft has been restructured to more clearly show the
commonalities and differences in behavior between the restarting and
starting cases.

Finally, and MOST IMPORTANT, implementations based on the old version(V2)
of the draft will interoperate with versions based on the new draft, though
of course the new functionality will not be supported.

Cheers.

     Les

Hi Jeff,

Some minor comments. Does the isisLSPTLVIndex mean the offset in bytes from
the header or the TLV number(like the first/second/nth TLV) in the contents
of the LSP?

I think its the latter. It would be nice if this was clarified further in
the "DESCRIPTION".

Besides I am not sure if I have asked you for this, but can we change
isisLSPTLVSeq to isisLSPTLVLSPSeq and isisLSPTLVChecksum to
isisLSPTLVLSPChecksum.

Also in isisLSPID description you can replace the "Fragment Number" as "LSP
Number" in isisLSPSummaryTable.

Thanks,
Vishwas

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IS-IS for IP Internets Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : Restart signaling for IS-IS
	Author(s)	: M. Shand, L. Ginsberg
	Filename	: draft-ietf-isis-restart-03.txt
	Pages		: 13
	Date		: 2003-3-5

The IS-IS routing protocol (RFC 1142 [2], ISO/IEC 10589 [3]) is a
link state intra-domain routing protocol. Normally, when an IS-IS
router is re-started, the neighboring routers detect the restart
event and cycle their adjacencies with the restarting router through
the down state. This is necessary in order to invoke the protocol
mechanisms to ensure correct re-synchronization of the LSP database.
However, the cycling of the adjacency state causes the neighbors to
regenerate their LSPs describing the adjacency concerned. This in
turn causes temporary disruption of routes passing through the
restarting router.
In certain scenarios such temporary disruption of the routes is
highly undesirable.

Hi all,

This is Kay.

I updated our draft, Protocol Topology Support for IS-IS.
You can download it from the ietf site with this URL.

http://ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-noguchi-isis-protocol-topology-01.txt

The change includes,

 - it makes clear the adjacency section as Jeff suggested.
 - it adds one section which discribes "Migration from Node Oriented
   to Interface Oriented Protocol Support".

I'll make a presentation in the next IETF so hope you guys read the
draft before the meeting.

Thank you,

								kay

Good point.  Is this clearer?

Remind me why is this a good idea.

I can only speak for myself, but I find "LSP Number" is
ambiguous. There are many things that this term could
refer to. In the context of the description (see below)
I think "Frament Number" is clearer.

    isisLSPID OBJECT-TYPE

Nagi -
	Good point. I have modified the text of the Description clause,
included below. The isisSysLevelSetOverload object remains read-create. It
is also included below for reference.
	The LevelState TC includes both overloaded (natural causes) and
waiting (set by administrator) so that a manager can tell why the system's
overload bit is set.

	Title : Point-to-point operation over LAN in link-state
                          routing protocols
	Author(s)	: N. Shen et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-isis-igp-p2p-over-lan-02.txt
	Pages		: 8
	Date		: 2003-3-26

The two predominant circuit types used by link state routing
protocols are point-to-point and broadcast. It is important to
identify the correct circuit type when forming adjacencies,
flooding link state database packets, and representing the circuit
topologically. This document describes a simple mechanism to treat
the broadcast network as a point-to-point connection from the
standpoint of IP routing.

A couple of minor changes made into version 06 of the draft after
the LC and a small group discussion include authors, co-chairs and
ADs and some vendors. Here is the list:

 1) specify the OL bit in lsp header only control the 'normal' or ipv4
    unicast topology.
 2) specify the route leaking between the levels SHOULD be performed within
    the same MT.
 3) specify a network SHOULD only run either v6 tlv type 236, or with
    M-ISIS using type 237. thus in one area/domain, we should not mix
    those together.

    there are ways to make them co-exist in some special network topology,
    but we don't think it's worth the effort. basically, we propose a
    network using ISIS v6 in a area/domain should either run 'normal'
    ipv6 or run M-ISIS ipv6, but not both at the same time.

    the M-ISIS compatibility is meant to be compatible with the 'normal'
    or ipv4 unicast topology.
 4) specify in this paragraph:

      The generic approach of packet to multiple MT RIB mapping over
      the same inbound interface is outside the scope of this draft.

    in M-ISIS, multiple topologies can co-exist over the same physical
    or logical link with the peers. in the case more than one topology
    belong to the same address family, there needs some mechanism to
    demux the inbound data packets for different RIB/FIB for route
    lookups. for example, if those are the QoS topologies, dscp bits
    of the ip packet may be used to pick the right forwarding table;
    if its a customer service level related topologies, some packet
    filters may be used to identify the packets belonging to certain
    customers/hosts/protocols/applications, thus to pick the correct
    tables. we are saying that those exact mechanism is outside the
    scope of this document.
  5) fixed some typos.

thanks.

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
	MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
	feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
	command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
	a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
	exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
	"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
	up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

i forgot to mention one more change in this version:

    6) made it clear that MT ID#0 can only be used in the MT TLV
       to announce the router/interface MT membership, it must be
       ignored if it shows up in the MT IS TLV or MT prefix TLV.
       this is to make sure the default or ipv4 unicast topology
       will all have a consistant view of the network.

thanks.

 ]
 ]
 ] A couple of minor changes made into version 06 of the draft after
 ] the LC and a small group discussion include authors, co-chairs and
 ] ADs and some vendors. Here is the list:
 ]
 ] 1) specify the OL bit in lsp header only control the 'normal' or ipv4
 ]     unicast topology.
 ] 2) specify the route leaking between the levels SHOULD be performed within
 ]     the same MT.
 ] 3) specify a network SHOULD only run either v6 tlv type 236, or with
 ] M-ISIS using type 237. thus in one area/domain, we should not mix
 ]     those together.
 ]
 ] there are ways to make them co-exist in some special network topology,
 ] but we don't think it's worth the effort. basically, we propose a
 ] network using ISIS v6 in a area/domain should either run 'normal'
 ] ipv6 or run M-ISIS ipv6, but not both at the same time.
 ]
 ] the M-ISIS compatibility is meant to be compatible with the 'normal'
 ]     or ipv4 unicast topology.
 ] 4) specify in this paragraph:
 ]
 ] The generic approach of packet to multiple MT RIB mapping over
 ] the same inbound interface is outside the scope of this draft.
 ]
 ] in M-ISIS, multiple topologies can co-exist over the same physical
 ] or logical link with the peers. in the case more than one topology
 ] belong to the same address family, there needs some mechanism to
 ] demux the inbound data packets for different RIB/FIB for route
 ] lookups. for example, if those are the QoS topologies, dscp bits
 ]     of the ip packet may be used to pick the right forwarding table;
 ] if its a customer service level related topologies, some packet
 ] filters may be used to identify the packets belonging to certain
 ] customers/hosts/protocols/applications, thus to pick the correct
 ] tables. we are saying that those exact mechanism is outside the
 ]     scope of this document.
 ]   5) fixed some typos.
 ]
 ]
 ] thanks.

 ] This draft describes an optional mechanism within ISIS used today

 ] describes how to run within a single ISIS domain a set of
 ] independent IP topologies that we call Multi-Topologies (MTs).
 ] This MT extension can be used for variety of purposes such as an
