A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IS-IS for IP Internets Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Management Information Base for IS-IS
	Author(s)	: J. Parker
	Filename	: draft-ietf-isis-wg-mib-16.txt
	Pages : 90
	Date : 2004-7-6

This document describes a management information base for the IS-IS
Routing protocol, as described in ISO 10589 [2], when it is used to
construct routing tables for IP networks, as described in RFC 1195
[RFC1195].
This memo defines an experimental portion of the Management
Information Base (MIB) for use with network management protocols in
the Internet community.
This memo is based on an IETF draft by Chris Gunner [1]. This
version has been modified to include MIB-II syntax, to exclude
portions of the protocol that are not relevant to IP, such as the
ES-IS protocol, and to add management support for current practice.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-isis-wg-mib-16.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-isis-wg-mib-16.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-isis-wg-mib-16.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

This document describes a mechanism for a restarting router to signal
to its neighbors that it is restarting, allowing them to
reestablish their adjacencies without cycling through the down
state, while still correctly initiating database synchronization.

This document additionally describes a mechanism for a restarting
router to determine when it has achieved LSP database
synchronization with its neighbors and a mechanism to optimize LSP
database synchronization, while minimizing transient routing
disruption when a router starts.

This document is a product of the IS-IS for IP Internets Working Group
of the IETF.

This memo provides information for the Internet community. It does
not specify an Internet standard of any kind. Distribution of this
memo is unlimited.

This announcement is sent to the IETF list and the RFC-DIST list.
Requests to be added to or deleted from the IETF distribution list

	Title : IPv6 Traffic Engineering in IS-IS
	Author(s)	: J. Harrison, et al.
	Filename	: draft-harrison-isis-ipv6-te-00.txt
	Pages : 10
	Date : 2004-7-6

This draft specifies a method for exchanging IPv6 Traffic Engineering
information using the IS-IS routing protocol. The described method
uses three new TLVs, together with 2 new sub-TLVs of the Extended IS
Reachability TLV. The information distributed allows a CSPF
algorithm to calculate traffic engineered routes using IPv6
   addresses.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IS-IS for IP Internets Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Point-to-point operation over LAN in link-state routing protocols
	Author(s)	: N. Shen, A. Zinin
	Filename	: draft-ietf-isis-igp-p2p-over-lan-04.txt
	Pages : 9
	Date : 2004-7-9

The two predominant circuit types used by link state routing
protocols are point-to-point and broadcast. It is important to
identify the correct circuit type when forming adjacencies,
flooding link state database packets, and representing the circuit
topologically. This document describes a simple mechanism to treat
the broadcast network as a point-to-point connection from the
standpoint of IP routing.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IS-IS for IP Internets Working Group of the IETF.

Title : A Policy Control Mechanism is IS-IS Using Administrative Tags
	Author(s)	: C. Martin, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-isis-admin-tags-02.txt
	Pages : 6
	Date : 2004-7-13

This document describes an extension to the IS-IS protocol to add
operational capabilities that allow for ease of management and
control over IP prefix distribution within an IS-IS domain.
This document enhances the IS-IS protocol by extending the
information that a Intermediate System (IS) [router] can place in
Link State Protocol Data Units (LSPs) for policy use. This
extension will provide operators with a mechanism to control IP
prefix distribution throughout multi-level IS-IS domains.
Additionally, the information can be placed in LSPs that have TLVs as
yet undefined, if this information is used to convey the same meaning
in these future TLVs as it is used in the currently defined TLVs.

This draft is a work item of the IS-IS for IP Internets Working Group of
the IETF.

Title : A Policy Control Mechanism is IS-IS Using
Administrative Tags
	Author(s)	: C. Martin, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-isis-admin-tags-02.txt
	Pages : 6
	Date : 2004-7-13
=09
This document describes an extension to the IS-IS protocol to add
operational capabilities that allow for ease of management and
control over IP prefix distribution within an IS-IS domain. =20

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to=20
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of
the message. =20

to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the
username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-isis-admin-tags-02.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html=20
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-isis-admin-tags-02.txt".
=09
NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
	a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail
readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

This draft is a work item of the IS-IS for IP Internets Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Point-to-point operation over LAN in link-state routing protocols
	Author(s)	: N. Shen, A. Zinin
	Filename	: draft-ietf-isis-igp-p2p-over-lan-05.txt
	Pages : 9
	Date : 2004-7-14

The two predominant circuit types used by link state routing
protocols are point-to-point and broadcast. It is important to
identify the correct circuit type when forming adjacencies,
flooding link state database packets, and representing the circuit
topologically. This document describes a simple mechanism to treat
the broadcast network as a point-to-point connection from the
standpoint of IP routing.

Hi Jeff,

The following is the smicng MIB compiler output
for version 16 of the MIB. smicng has the flags
specified by the mibtools
(see http://www.ops.ietf.org/mib-review-tools.html
for more details the flags).

Are these going to be fixed in the next version of
the MIB?

  thanks,
   -Joan

a) To get these, you ask IANA. It's free and fairly easy.
	http://www.iana.org/assignments/enterprise-numbers
b) There are 20,838 allocated out of 2^32 possible. Yes, they will
run out. No, I'm not worried.
c) If running out is an issue, then OUIs have a bigger problem :-)

One other reason that enterprise numbers might be useful is that RSVP
(and maybe OSPF) "Vendor Private" code points will use enterprise
numbers to identify the owner of private extensions. See
	draft-kompella-rsvp-change-xx.txt and
	draft-kompella-ospf-iana-00.txt
The RSVP doc is pretty much ready for publication. The OSPF doc has a
long way to go yet.

As for the rest, I don't particularly care if there is a discriminator
byte, or we use only enterprise numbers. I have a slight preference
for a discriminator byte, but not enough to do something about it.

Kireeti.

Joan -
Sorry, I have been out for a couple of weeks.
I believe this to be a problem with SMICNG, not with the MIB.

Hi,

Just to mention that as agreed at IETF-59, we merged the two ISIS
capability draft.

The resulting merged draft is draft-vasseur-isis-caps-02.txt. Any comment
is of course very welcome.

JP.

Hi,

A quick update on the IGP TE capability drafts.

There used to be two drafts proposing several TE-related extensions:
	draft-vasseur-ccamp-isis-te-caps
	draft-vasseur-ccamp-ospf-te-caps

Based on the input from our AD and WG chairs, we restructured this work and
came up with three drafts:
	draft-vasseur-ccamp-te-router-info-00 (discussed in CCAMP)

and the IGP specific (sub)TLV encoding and elements of procedure are
defined in:
	draft-vasseur-isis-te-caps-00 (in ISIS)
	draft-vasseur-ospf-te-caps-00 (in OSPF)

Comments are of course very welcome.

JP and al.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your response.
I am fairly certain that there are issues
with the MIB because smiLint also gives
similar complaints.

For example, indices should be not-accessible
and some of these are read-only.

With regard to Notifications, the MIB review guidelines
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ops-mib-review-guidelines-03.
txt

specify:
"RFC 2578 Section 8 specifies the rules for notification definitions.
   In particular:

   - Inaccessible objects MUST NOT appear in the OBJECTS clause."

which is one of the complaints from these compilers.

Slightly different topic: what is the status of the MIB? Has it
gone through working group last call(s) and/or MIB Doctor review?

  thanks,
   -Joan

Jeff, Joan,

Joan is right and unfortunately, my MIB compilers tend to gloss over

issues in NOTIFICATION-TYPE objects since they are more concerned

with get-able and set-able objects.

What can be done is to create two new OBJECT-TYPE attributes

under isisNotificationEntry. Call them something like

isisLevelIndex and isisAreaAddress and define them both as

accessible-for-notify. isisLevelIndex can have a SYNTAX of ISLevel

and isisAreaAddress can have a SYNTAX of OSINSAddress.

I think that should take care of the compilation issues.

Cheers,

Don

I am wondering if there is not a different way to
resolve these errors, such as putting an object in
the Notification.

Don and Jeff,

The object contains an index (which is one of the
motivations to make indices not-accessible from
smiv1 to smiv2). I don't see the need to add more
objects to an already sizeable MIB, so think the solution
of adding an object (from the row) into the
Notifications, would be simpler.

Hi Jeff,

The index for the isisSysLevelTable is read-only and should be
not-accessible. Also, there are read-create objects in the entry
BUT there is no RowStatus object.

Based on my understanding of this table, there
probably should be a RowStatus object in the entry. For example, is it
possible to have NO level2IS entry? Is so, then a
RowStatus object is needed.

If not, then is the intention that there are 2 rows in this table (always),
one row for level1IS and one row for level2IS? If so, then these read-create objects should
change to read-write.

  thanks,
    -Joan

I'm not sure that we need the weight of a RowStatus object
for this table. We don;t spawn off huge numbers of SysLevel
objects: we can expect a Level 1 and a Level 2 object to be
active, but don't expect Level 42.

I will modify the access level of these objects

Joan -
I have taken a look at the table, and don't understand your concern.

The isisSysType object is used to select the active levels - 1, 2,
or both.
The issiSysLevelTable holds a number of objects: I have edited the MIB to
include the relevant sections. They all seem appropriate to me: those that
I want to change are read-write, while those that I want to read are
not-accessible. The Overload state may be set by hand, but may also be set
by the implementation when it is low on memory.

Do you have a specific suggestion?

- jeff

Jeff,

I think that Joan says that isisSysLevelIndex should be

not-accessible and that the read-create objects in this

table should be read-write objects since there is no

desire to add a RowStatus.

========================

- jeff

So let me see if I am understanding you. If the
scalar object isisSysLevelType has the value of
level1IS(1), then there is ONE row in the isisSysLevelTable
and this row has the isisSysLevelIndex with a value
of level1IS(1).

If the value of the scalar isisSysLevelType has the value
of levelIS(2), the thre is ONE row in the isisSysLevelTable
and this row has the isisSysLevelIndex with a value of
level2IS(2).

If the value of the scalar isisSysLevelType has the value
of levelL1L2IS(3), then there are 2 rows in the isisSysLevelTable
where one row is the isisSysLevelIndex with a value of level1IS(1)
and the other row with the isisSysLevelIndex with a value of
level2IS(2). Is this correct?

If the above is correct than I think the DESCRIPTION clauses for
both the scalar object, isisSysLevel and the isisSysLevelTable
need to state this clearly so that the agent is responsible
for creating/destroying rows in this table if the scalar object
is changed. The operator using this MIB and the developer
implementing this MIB should understand
the relationship between that scalar and this table. (This wasn't
obvious to me as a fairly new reader of the MIB.)

Also, in addition to clarifying the DESCRIPTION clauses,
I would strongly suggest moving the scalar object to just before
the table to emphasize the relationship between the scalar and
the table.

The SMI is still incorrect in that the Index of the isisSysLevelTable
needs to be not-accessible (think we are in agreement on this).

Also, if the agent is responsible for creating/destroying rows,
then all of the read-create objects should be changed to
read-write (as Don also states). read-create is when the
operator is creating/destroying rows (and related to RowStatus).

Does this make sense?

  thanks, Joan

No. It may be useful to save the configuration of a level,
even if the system currently does not enable things
at that level. My car remembers the details of my wife's
seat position, even when I am driving.

I can add text to the description for SysLevel to this effect.

I would rather not move the position of isisSysType from
the rest of the old system table.

> The SMI is still incorrect in that the Index of the isisSysLevelTable

Yes.

You stated that some "read-only" objects should be changed:
the only one I see is the isisSysLevelOverloadState. I
continue to think that read-only is exactly right. To
continue the car analogy, this is the oil gauge.

Don -
I can see why isisSysLevel might present a problem.
Why isn't CircIfIndex also a problem? Is it just masked by
SysLevel?

No. It may be useful to save the configuration of a level,
even if the system currently does not enable things
at that level. My car remembers the details of my wife's
seat position, even when I am driving.

jec> That is fine as long as this is clarified in the DESCRIPTION

I can add text to the description for SysLevel to this effect.

jec> To be clear, text should be added to both the scalar and the table

I would rather not move the position of isisSysType from
the rest of the old system table.

Yes.

You stated that some "read-only" objects should be changed:
the only one I see is the isisSysLevelOverloadState. I
continue to think that read-only is exactly right. To
continue the car analogy, this is the oil gauge.

jec> No, sorry if I wasn't clear. I stated that the read-create objects need to be changed to
