Enrique -
The MIB is in last call, so it is not yet a standard. Should it become
a standard, IANA will assign it a valid OID outside the Experimental range.

There have been some recent discussion on the list, should you have a
chance to check the archives.

Hello.

My name is Enrique Gonzalez. I am a Spanish company's engineer of systems
management network that we are accomplishing a project of management
service in and we need to monitoring a part of environment of network
MPLS.

For it, we need to know the OID needed to know the information correlated to
the protocol IS-IS that it seems not to be very standardized, because in
the IETF's RFC
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-isis-wg-mib-20.txt) the
iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2 appears in the branch mib-2 ( 1.3.6.1.2.1 )
However, in the IANA (http://www.iana.org/assignments/smi-numbers) it hangs
up on iso.org.dod.internet.experimental ( 1.3.6.1.3 )
It is an element that hangs up of the experimental branch such and how it
can be appreciated from that page.
I would like could have clarified what information is valid and why this
difference.

Thank you very much.

Greetings.

All -
This is an announcement of a "Last Last call" (famous last
words, eh?) with a 72 hour duration on several drafts that have had
multiple WG Last Calls and now have passed idnits.

Please review, comment, pick nits, etc on the following drafts:

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-isis-wg-multi-topology-10.txt

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-isis-caps-03.txt

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-isis-link-attr-01.txt

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-isis-admin-tags-03.txt

If you have any comments on these drafts, please include the common
name of the draft in the subject line and cc all authors of the draft.

E.g.

Subject: Admin Tags LLC showstopper commment

Many thanks. Pending no further comments, all the drafts above will
proceed to the next step in the process. We aren't expecting any
showstopper comments since the only changes are idnits and grammer.
But again, these are famous last words.

DWard and Chopps

It is easy for me to make this change, but I'd like to ask other
implementors what they think pro and con about such a change (to change all
32 bit counters to 64 bit counters)

I have run through the suggestions from Last call, and I have made an
initial draft which I would be happy to circulate to interested parties.

Here are the changes
    1) Combine the various flavors of L1, L2, L1L2 into one type
and change some terms, as per requests.
    2) Changed Integer32 to Unsigned32 throughout
    3) Changed Syntax of *UpTime to TimeStamp
    4) Attempted to clarify interaction between circuit level
and system level. The goal is to allow a circuit level
to retain an value that may not match the current system level
so that values can survive administrator setting L1L2 System
to L1 to clear some issue and return to L1L2.
    5) Remove reference to RFC 2863 in AdminState
    6) Added text to try to clarify interaction between
        isisSysLevelSetOverload and isisSysLevelSetOverloadUntil
        per request
    7) Add RFC numbers to MIB names

There are a couple of issues remaining.

    A) Wide counters (see previous mail)
    B) Counter behavior around discontinuity.
    C) Text for isisCircIfSubSelector.
    D) Do we need to turn off notifications?

Any opinions or contributions on these topics are welcome.

I'd be happy to send a copy of the MIB or the draft off-line to anyone
interested. Diffs in the MIB portion are below.

Jeff,

The isisSystemCounter and isisCircuitCounter should definitely stay as =
32-bit counters, as these count rare events (for most of these, any =
change indicates a configuration issue).

My view is that the packet counts are also fine as 32-bit counters. If =
I were using the counters to check for timer misconfiguration, I would =
expect to check the values initially, and then check the values again a =
short time later. The main requirement for the size of the counter is =
that it should give an unambiguous count of packets received over this =
short period. For example, if the reading is 1000 on the first check, =
and 1001 on the second check shortly afterwards, the network manager =
should be able to be confident that 1 packet has been received and the =
counter hasn't wrapped in-between the two checks.

At the fairly high rate for steady state IS-IS of 10 packets a second, =
it will be 13.6 years before the 32-bit counter wraps. Even a packet =
thrash with, say, 10,000 packets a second would only cause the counters =
to wrap after 5 days - which ought to be long enough to check the MIB a =
couple of times.

So I'm happy with the counters as they are now.

It is easy for me to make this change, but I'd like to ask other
implementors what they think pro and con about such a change (to change =
all
32 bit counters to 64 bit counters)

We have had a few comments since my last post.

Here are the changes from prior edit.
    1) Combine the various flavors of L1, L2, L1L2 into one type
and change some terms, as per requests.
    2) Changed Integer32 to Unsigned32 throughout
    3) Changed Syntax of *UpTime to TimeStamp
    4) Attempted to clarify interaction between circuit level
and system level. The operator is able to set circuit
to level L1L2 while system is at L1, to prepare for
        a move to L1L2.
    5) Remove reference to RFC 2863 in AdminState
    6) Added text to try to clarify interaction between
        isisSysLevelSetOverload and isisSysLevelSetOverloadUntil
        per request
    7) Add RFC numbers to MIB names

Actions on the remaining issues

    A) Wide counters (see previous mail)
I have not heard a request for 64 bit counters.
The only counters that are in danger of wrapping
are the packet counters, and those are an aid to
debugging rather than a management tool.

        No change

    B) Counter behavior around discontinuity.
I don't see this as an issue

        No change

    C) Text for isisCircIfSubSelector.
        I have modified the description

    D) Do we need to turn off notifications?
I have added a field isisSysNotificationEnable
and added a reference when defining the notifications

I believe this represents the remaining issues. I will wait for at least 24
hours and then resubmit a draft.

I'd be happy to send a copy of the MIB or the draft off-line to anyone
Interested in the interim.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IS-IS for IP Internets Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Management Information Base for IS-IS
	Author(s)	: J. Parker
	Filename	: draft-ietf-isis-wg-mib-21.txt
	Pages : 102
	Date : 2005-6-24

This document describes a management information base for the IS-IS
Routing protocol when it is used to construct routing tables for IP
   networks.

This memo defines a portion of the Management Information Base (MIB)
for use with network management protocols in the Internet community.

This memo is based on an IETF draft by Chris Gunner. This version
has been modified to include MIB-II syntax, to exclude portions of
the protocol that are not relevant to IP, such as the ES-IS protocol,
and to add management support for current practice.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-isis-wg-mib-21.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-isis-wg-mib-21.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-isis-wg-mib-21.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

not done and the behavior of this object has been changed.
I am not in favor of allowing this object to be set and having no
indication of whether or not the specific circuit level
is passing packets and would like to understand why
this change was made.

If this is thought by the working group to be a change for the
better, then I would ask that an CircLevelOperStatus object be
added to the CircLevel Table.

Mike explained why the original description is valid.

The description has changed slightly, but the original concerns have
not been addressed.

Additionally, if there is an ifIndex which corresponds to an IS-IS circuit,
as this new description says, then an ifType should also be defined.

There is already something called isisCircType, so I could not use
that name. I changed the name to isisCircLevelType in an attempt to
address your concern.

Do you have a specific proposal?

I'm sorry if the intent was not clear: this has been my aim all along.

I think it is useful to allow an administrator to have a system
running at level L1, and prepare circuits to run at L2 or L1L2
before switching the system to L1L2 to reduce the changes in state
that are seen in the network.

You can find out if the circuit is passing packets or not by
performing a logical OR on the system level and the circuit level.

There were several original concerns. Is your remaining concern the value 0?

Do you have a specific suggestion?

There is an isisCircIfIndex which refers to the ifIndex. Can't you
fetch the ifType out of the Interface MIB?

I admit that we have more circuit indicies than any two MIBs need,
but this dates back to a specific request. It sounds to me as though
your implementation has no need for this field. Can't you can return
0 and be done with this?

Yes, isisSysLevelType and isisCircLevelType. This way the
suffixes are the SAME and indicate that there is a relationship
between these objects.

Operators typically do not make sweeping changes as you describe
above.
Typically they would change the system level and then turn
up one circuit at a time to make sure that the network
comes back as expected. They don't tend to trust preconfiguration.

What about at the far end of a circuit, and it all of a sudden
stops receiving packets?

An CircLevelOperStatus object would be beneficial in this case.

Yes, since this object is not IP specific, it should be removed.

As I state above the DESCRIPTION now refers to an ISIS circuit as
having an ifIndex, if this is accurate, then there needs to be
an ifType and I couldn't find one, so am asking what this would be?

Jeff, the point is that this object is not sufficiently defined,
so am asking for it to be removed, OR be better
defined. Perhaps an additional object which states the ifType
needs to be added. Also, why isn't this doesn't this object
have the SYNTAX of InterfaceIndexOrZero?

With a few exceptions noted below, the changes in going from version
20 to version 21 look OK to me. I didn't catch these issues in the
pre-submission discussion because I don't regularly monitor this
list; sorry about that. Anyway, here are the complaints:

- Typo in isisSysLevelSetOverloadUntil DESCRIPTION clause:

OLD:
If isisSysLevelSetOverload is false, the system clears
             the overload bit when isisSysLevelSetOverloadUntil
jave elapsed, if the system has not run out of memory."
NEW:
If isisSysLevelSetOverload is false, the system clears
the overload bit when isisSysLevelSetOverloadUntil seconds
have elapsed, if the system has not run out of memory."

- The DESCRIPTION clauses for the objects isisCircLastUpTime and
isisISAdjLastUpTime are now inconsistent with the SYNTAX values.
What has happened is that these objects are now of type TimeStamp,
and so are values of sysUpTime (see RFC 2579), which has units of
1/100 of a second since the last re-initialization of the network
management portion of the system (RFC 3418). However, the
DESCRIPTION clauses say that the xyzLastUpTime objects represent the
"number of seconds since system startup" that the relevent event
occurred. Possible remedies are:

(a) re-instate the version 20 SYNTAX of Unsigned32 in both
definitions;

(b) change the phrase "number of seconds since system startup" to
"number of hundredths of a second since the network management
portion of the system was last re-initialized" in both definitions.

These are the only MIB Doctor issues that I personally have with
the draft. However, I would like to say that Joan Cucchiara's
suggestion to change the SYNTAX of isisCircIfIndex from
InterfaceIndex to InterfaceIndexOrZero is the correct thing to
do _if_ it is agreed that there may be circuits for which there
is no corresponding IfEntry.

Mike Heard
