Hello,

As an implementor of RFC 5953 at SNMP Research, I concur with the statements
in RFC 5953 interoperability report. The core SNMP protocol operations DO
interoperate over (D)TLS between the SNMP Research and Net-SNMP implement-
ations, and the issues identified are implementation issues, NOT issues
with RFC 5953 specification itself.

Regards,
--Alan

Robert (and Alan),

thank you very much for the report. I assume the implementation use
RFC 5591 (which relies on RFC 5590) and likely they also use RFC
5343. Will there be separate interoperability reports for these
specifications as well or is the plan to expand the scope of the
report to cover these RFCs as well?

Concerning the security level mapping, it seems that this was not
implemented and left to be added if there is demand for supporting
weak cryptography in TLS. So is this a feature that perhaps is not
needed?

Another question: Are you aware of any real-world deployments of SNMP
over TLS? RFC 2026 also calls for "sufficient successful operational
experience" to advance to Draft Standard level.

I noticed this too.. I read up on submitting errata and it seems like it
said that only errors that caused an issue with the specification were
considered. But if we're making corrections, then a more serious typo
is that snmpTargetAddrColumnStatus (also in the appendix), should be
snmpTargetAddrRowStatus.

So please consider filing an errata. I think it is helpful to have
issues recorded somewhere where they are found when a document is
revised. Digging through mailing list archives is time consuming and
error prone, especially if that happens years after the issue has been
discovered. Probably the approval process for editorial issues should
be simpler - but that is a different issue I think.

I might also be completely wrong.

Separate reports are in the works..

Net-SNMP does plan on implementing it. The problem with removing it is
that 'weak cryptography' is a moving target. We want to have the
ability to do the mapping in place before it's needed.

I'm going to let Wes field this one.

There is one more issue with the example in A.1. It does not show the
setup for the snmpNotifyTable to tie together the other rows. To be
complete, I'd expect something like:

The following row adds the "toNRTag" tag to the snmpNotifyTable:

       snmpNotifyName                 =3D  "toNRName"
       snmpNotifyTag                  =3D  "toNRTag"
       snmpNotifyType                 =3D  1         (trap)
       snmpNotifyStorageType          =3D  3         (nonVolatile)
       snmpNotifyRowStatus            =3D  4         (createAndGo)

Or are we assuming the reader knows what is needed to make the example
work?

It was decided previously that the example wouldn't include settings for the previous example tables. The example section actually had longer examples in it but an IESG member wanted them removed. So no, the text is published according to expectations.

I checked once more RFC 3413 and I concluded that this errata should
be approved.

Unfortunately there is somewhat of a chicken and egg problem here, along with the standard reporting mechanism to the IETF of "there isn't one".

I know of people that want to see it at Draft before they really kick in to using it. Hence the chicken and egg problem.

I know weMve gotten some people playing with our test server. I know we've gotten some people that have asked questions about it. So given all that, yes I think there is definitely deployment happening. I know as implementers we've learned a lot from interacting with people asking questions about setting it up and using it. We've changed code based on comments and questions. So, IMHO, we've received enough feedback to meet that requirement.

Robert,

thanks for the report. My understanding is that the following
paragraph is documenting an observation made during implementation:

Note that the localEngineID value is intended to
be used as a special value for the contextEngineID field in the
ScopedPDU. It MUST NOT be used as a value to identify an SNMP
engine; that is, this value MUST NOT be used in the snmpEngineID.0
scalar [RFC3418] or in the msgAuthoritativeEngineID field in the
securityParameters of the User-based Security Model (USM) [RFC3414].

Due to the MUST language, the text reads like a quote from RFC 5343,
but it seems this is a suggestion for a clarification to be added to
RFC 5343.

Hi,

Robert has posted interoperability reports for the RFCs 5343, 5590,
5591, 5953. I like to ask the WG to review the reports and provide
feedback. My understanding so far is that the implementors did not
uncover any major problems in the RFCs and that a status change from
Proposed to Draft seems feasible without a re-publication of the
documents. Please comment if you believe my reading is incorrect and
you think a re-publication is necessary.

According to Section 6.2 of RFC 2026, we can't advance RFC 5953 before
February (RFC 5953 was published in August and a specification shall
remain at the Proposed Standard level for at least six (6) months) and
as such there is about a months left for additional input. If others
are working on implementations of one or more of these RFCs, please
consider getting in contact with Robert or the working group or the
chairs so that we can make the case for moving to Draft status even
stronger.

Juergen,

No, it's a quote from 3.1. Appendix A lists the requirements (using RFC
2119 keywords) that were not directly testable.

IE, testing negatives is difficult. You can't test that no where in
someone else's code do they incorrectly use the local engineID. The
best you can do is complain if you ever see one and hope you never see another.

You actually can submit them to the IESG before February. They can't be
published before February. So if there is no outstanding items to do,
I'd encourage us to submit the proposal to the IESG and the RFC Editor
simply won't publish it till the due date. Note that the SNMPv3 specs
were actually done this way. I talked with Sean about this too, and he
was fine (when I talked with him) with submitting them in advance of the
6 month time-frame (but he's welcome to chime in saying he still agrees
or no longer does with this opinion).

Personally, I'd like to see them submitted simply to help wrap up the
todo item as there doesn't seem to be reasons to drag it out if the work
is already done.

It's going to take 3 months (at least) for these to get published. It's
usually 2 week IETF LC, 2 weeks to get on an IESG telechat, two months
for RFC-editor to get to it. Starting now is fine by me.
