I'd never heard of message/external-body, and wow, that would be perfect
if everyone implemented it. The 20 years of personal email archives I've
managed to keep don't have a single instance of that type in them
though, which is disappointing: I'm guessing there are few, if any,
implementers today.

I assume the "normal" way to use this in an HTML email would be to
assign a Content-ID to the multipart/alternative containing the
external-body, if there is one, or to the external-body part itself, and
then reference it using "cid:" links, right? But that doesn't work if
recipients don't understand message/external-body.

Would this work instead? Encourage recipients to collect the URLs from
any external-body parts and treat references to those URLs as equivalent
to "cid:" references to the corresponding part. Then a sender can still
link to e.g. Google Drive in the HTML and plain-text parts, so that
recipients that don't understand external-body can at least follow the
link if they want to, but supporting implementations can also choose to
treat it fully like an attachment.

If that seems reasonable, then I think this is indeed most of the way
there, and just needs new stuff for integrity and confidentiality.

External-body parts are just like any other MIME part, and can go
anywhere. It is my strong impression that the vast majortity of giant
MIME parts are attached videos or other opaque formats so they appear as
attachments. I don't see any reaspn a Content-ID wouldn't work but it
rarely would be needed.

I agree there is a bootstrap problem. Some mail programs implemented it
back in the 1990s when people still dialed in to download their mail, then
it went away when we all got permanently online, now we need it again as
the size of bloatware has pulled away from what mail systems do.

I *think* the bootstrap problem can be solved if most clients support multiple MIME parts correctly (which I think they probably must, because Apple's clients often produce bodies like that). You have something like this:

multipart/mixed
    text/html *(The message body)*
    multipart/alternative
text/html *(HTML representation of attachments, just like current G Drive etc.)*
message/external-body *(For external attachment aware clients)*

We've collected a bunch of great ideas here. I think the next sensible step is probably some running code and maybe try to get a group of hackathon people trying things at the next IETF.

I'm particularly interested in anyone who knows any clients which currently implement `message/external-body` at all, so we can check that they handle any changes we make to the format.

Hi all,

Currently, in JMAP Calendars we have the following ACLs controlling what data you may write in the calendar:
 * `mayAddItems` Can add events to calendar.
 * `mayUpdateOwn` Can update events you own or have no owner.
 * `mayUpdateAll` Can update all events (implies mayUpdateOwn, mayUpdatePrivate and mayRSVP).
 * `mayRemoveOwn` Can delete events you own or have no owner.
 * `mayRemoveAll` Can delete all events (implies mayRemoveOwn).
 * `mayUpdatePrivate` Can update private properties (ones that do not affect other participants in the event, e.g. alerts) on events you don't otherwise have permission to modify.
 * `mayRSVP` Can set the RSVP status of *your* participants in events you don't otherwise have permission to modify.
I would like to propose we change the first 5 of those to just two:
 * `mayWriteOwn` The user may create, modify or destroy an event on this calendar if either they are the owner of the event or the event has no owner.
 * `mayWriteAll` The user may create, modify or destroy all events in this calendar, or move events to or from this calendar. If this is true, the mayWriteOwn, mayUpdatePrivate and mayRSVP properties MUST all also be true.
As calendar events are completely mutable (unlike messages in Email), having separate ACLs for create/update/destroy doesn't seem very helpful, and this simplifies things. Does this sound reasonable? Any objections?

Cheers,
Neil.

Having recently implemented the current ACL scheme, I am much in favor of this proposal.

my client (Turnpike) will handle incoming message/external-body but does
not generate it

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnpike_(software)

I still use this software every day (see headers), but I haven't seen an
example of this MIME type for many years (the IETF used to use it for
their notifications of new RFCs and drafts)

BTW: there are surely other WGs where any MIME extension work (if you
want to add content hashes perhaps, to assist in abuse prevention) will
be better handled. If you just want to encourage the use of this MIME
type then I doubt it matters where you do it !

It appears that Neil Jenkins <neilj@fastmailteam.com> said:

I suppose, but if the HTML fits in the message, what's the point of the external version other
than to debug your MUA?

Sorry, I wasn't clear. The HTML version is a (prettier version) of something like this:

<h2>Attachments</h2>
<a href="https://example.com/download/large/file">whatididonmyholiday.mp4</a>

So if your client doesn't support the external body, it will instead show the sender-generated links to download the attachment (which is exactly what Google, Microsoft etc. currently do). But if it does support the external body, it can show it like any real attachment and offer the advantages we've discussed (immutability, privacy-preserving caching on delivery etc.). This provides a seamless upgrade path to offer the feature.

Neil.

Hi all, here's my AD review for this short document:

Please use the correct boilerplate text for BCP 14. You've got the old
version here.

I suggest using "specification" rather than "spec" (e.g., in Section 3).
And while I'm at it, it might be helpful to identify RFC 8620 as JMAP at
its first use in Section 2, because then in Section 3 you refer to "the
JMAP spec" but it's not clear which one that is.

In Section 4, for "smimeStatus", mapping unrecognized values to
"signal/failed" seems a curious choice. Why not allow only "unknown"?

For Section 4, I suggest (but you don't have to) giving each property a
separate subsection.

Otherwise this is in good shape. The above things are minor enough that
you can just handle them as Last Call comments, and I'll go request that
now.

-MSK

Good point. I corrected that.

I think it depends on the application. If one wants to enforce presence=20
of valid S/MIME signatures, anything which is unrecognized is=20
"signed/failed" in a way. But I don't have a strong feeling and can=20
change this.

I will have a look how much work this is. I might ask RFC Editor ;-).

If the server performs a signature verification, and then the client =
performs a signature verification, the results might not be the same due =
to different trust anchor stores or a revocation that takes place =
between the two verifications. I think this situation should be =
described in the Security Considerations.

Hi All,

(I have included both the CALEXT and JMAP working group lists on this message)

This document has now been uploaded as a working group document for CALEXT. Per our meeting at IETF111, then plan is to work on this immediately with a goal of publishing soon. I'm not quite ready to do a working group last call yet, but hopefully we can do one soon. The document is here:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-calext-ical-tasks/

I'm particularly interested in some cross review against the planned JMAP tasks work, hence including the JMAP group as well:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-jmap-tasks/

*Please note:* there has been an IPR disclosure for an earlier version of this document. It's worth reading that too (it's not very long) to see which parts of the document may be affected:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/ipr/2518/

Regards,

Bron.
