Sorry I missed this when you posted it to the list.

I agree that we ought to be addressing the "common framework" as part
of the design guidelines.

I think that the design guide does address common elements that
cross routing protocol boundaries.
I also believe that the process would not be served by delaying the
design guide in order to add significant text about a common approach.

If Russ believes this is just an issue of following process and is
overall happy with the progress we're making, I'd urge him to consider
whether the DISCUSS position is likely to improve the output of the WG
or just delay focusing on actually improving routing protocols and
getting automated key management. If Russ believes the approach we're
considering for the protocols we've actually looked at is somehow
flawed, or that we're missing common elements, then perhaps we should
give him as much time as he needs to present his concerns in IETF 82 so
we can understand them.

Russ, as part of designing a KMP proposal we've tried to come up with a
situation where an operator would like to do this. So far we've failed.
We can easily come up with reasons to have multiple sessions between two
peers. So far though, we've been unable to come up with reasons why
you'd want to use different authentication for these two sessions.
Can you help us with use cases?

How about in a public data center? You may have separate control plane
instances with different admins, needing independent security, but runnin=
g on
the same wire.

Hi Sam,

I'm thinking aloud here.

Consider the following topology:

S1a -- B -- C -- S2a
       | |
      S2b S1b

S1a and S1b are two routers belonging to the same site S1, and S2a and S2b =
are two routers belonging to a different site S2.=20

B and C are backbone routers running multiple routing instances (ISIS, for =
example) to connect sites S1 and S2. The idea is to use multiple instances =
of ISIS to segregate traffic within a large network. Routes from instance S=
1 are not placed in the instance S2.

In this case we will have two ISIS routing instances running between B and =
C (actually 3, as there will be a default instance also running).

Given that S1 and S2 are two different administrative domains there is noth=
ing that precludes them from having different security policies. In which c=
ase you could, at least theoretically, have S1 use one auth algo and S2 use=
some other. This could also happen if for example, S1b doesn't support a p=
articular authentication algo that other routers in the larger network supp=
ort. In such a case, the routers in site S1 could fall back to the lowest a=
uth algo that all routers in that site support, while routers in the other =
sites could use a stronger algorithm.

Cheers, Manav

That's a good point. Note that the RKMP work we're doing is focusing on
unicast associations, so not IS-IS. (Even in point-to-point mode, IS-IS
does area-wide or domain-wide keying, so it would need a group security
association.) You're absolutely right that two peers can participate in
groups with different parameters, and that the name of a group would
need to distinguish multiple instances especially for something like
IS-IS.

We haven't found an example where the same issue comes up in unicast
associations. If we change your example to use multiple BGP instances
for example, It seems fine for B and C to use the same SA to protect all
BGP traffic between B and C given that this affects nothing else in the
system and given the KARP threat model.

So, this is the part where we disagree. I do not think the current =

If you put together some slides talking about the sort of elements
you're looking for and we had some discussion about what we think we can
do I know I'd be very interested in the presentation and discussion.

Greetings,

The KARP WG will be meeting Wednesday afternoon in Taipei. We have a =
couple of WG documents to discuss, as well as a few individual =
submissions analyzing routing protocols and making suggestions regarding =
automated key management. The schedule is pretty tight, but if you have =
an additional topic for the meeting please email the chairs =
(karp-chairs@tools.ietf.org).

Thanks,
Brian & Joel=

Since we know that manual key management must be supported, the WG has =
decided to specify a crypto key table. Manual key management is =
populating the table, but this needs to be accomplished using an =
interface that protects the keying material from disclosure or =
alteration.

In addition, we want to specify automated key management. A protocol to =
automatically populate the crypto key table will be used. Several cases =
need to be considered:

1) pairwise keys -- IKEv2 and TLS already offer mechanisms that are =
directly applicable.

2) group keys --

2a) group keys distributed by a key center -- KeyProv offers mechanisms =
that are directly applicable, but additional attributes may be needed.

2b) group keying protocols -- new protocol work is needed for this =
approach to be employed.

A design guide ought to say what work needs to be done and when each of =
these cases ought to be employed.

FWIW, based on other recent discussions, it would be useful to know
whether such keys need to be unidirectional or can be bidirection, and
whether multiple concurrent keys between the same two endpoints is
expected (i.e., for separate assocations, not as a key rollover issue).

Hi Joel,

I disagree that its very clear and reasonable.

Russ seems to be making a sweeping assumption that design guide ought to me=
ntion that a solution with manual keying needs to revolve around the crypto=
key table. I am not too sure of that. I agree that it's a WG doc, but we h=
ave not had any discussions on whether this is the FINAL approach that we a=
re taking. I think its too premature to commit to this and the design guide=
should remain oblivious to a solution that has not even been debated in th=
e WG.

If we really want to do as Russ suggests then we need to probably wait for =
some more time till we have good clarity on where we're going with the cryp=
to key table document.

Cheers, Manav=20

I think its too premature to commit to this and the design guide should remain oblivious to a solution that has not even been debated in the WG.

KARP will focus on an abstraction for keying information that describes
the interface between routing protocols, operators and automated key
management. Conceptually when routing protocols send or recieve packets
they will look up the key to use in this abstract key
table. Conceptually, there will be an interface for a routing protocol
to make requests of automated key management when it is being used; when
keys become available they will be made available in the key
table. There is no requirement that this abstraction be used for
implementation; the abstraction serves the needs of standardization an
and management. Specifically as part of the KARP work plan:

1) KARP will design the key table abstraction and the interface between
key management protocols and routing protocols.

2) For each routing protocol, we will define the mapping between how the
protocol represents key material and the protocol independent key table
abstraction. When routing protocols share a common mechanism for
authentication, such as the TCP Authentication Option, the same mapping
is likely to be reused between protocols. An implementation may be able
to move much of the keying logic into code related to this shared
authentication primitive rather than code specific to routing protocols.

3) When designing automated key management for both symmetric keys and
group keys, we will only use the abstractions designed in point 1 above
to communicate between automated key management and routing protocols.

Thank you Sam.

WG, this text attempts to capture an apparent agreement in the
face-to-face meeting on how to resolve Russ Housley's discuss of the
design guidelines document.

Do members of the WG find this acceptable?

Thank you,
Joel & Brian

Joel asked me to flag that as various people have talked about AKM
proposals, they have all needed to have some interface for the routing
protocol or TCP-AO or whatever to request keys from the AKM. I've
talked about that abstraction as well in my text, not just the existing
key tables abstraction.

I don't think KARP should specify things in terms of packets - those
abstractions exist at other layers of the stack (transport = segment,
network = packet, link = frame).

IMO, this should refer to *messages*, and say:

Conceptually when routing protocols send or receive messages they are
associated with a key in this abstract key table.

I.e., "associated" could mean (and this might be useful to explain):

	- used by the routing protocol to protect a message
	- associated with a session at a lower protocol layer
to protect transfers at that layer

Hi Joel,=20
While this may be the ultimate positioning of the key table draft, I =
think it is premature to elevate it to this status.=20

I have the following comments on the -02 version:
=20
  1. LocalKeyID - Don't overload whether it is a pairwise or group key =
in the high order bit of the ID. Since there are already over 15 key =
fields in conceptual database, I don't see advantage of overloading the =
ID space. Let's not forget that if this draft becomes an RFC, =
administrators may actually have to configure these IDs.=20
  2. Peers - How are peers identified?=20
  3. Interfaces - How are interfaces and virtual interfaces identified? =
Is it protocol dependent?
  4. Use KeyStartAccept, KeyStopAccept, KeyStartGenerate, and =
KeyStopGenerate as field names in the conceptual database rather than =
RcvNotBefore, RcvNotAfter, SendNotBefore, and SendNotAfter.=20
This will be consistent with RFC 2238 and RFC 5709.

The answer to #3 will be useful in determining whether or not the keys =
for OSPF virtual links can easily mapped to the database. I had =
previously raised this issue but hadn't received a response.=20

Thanks,
Acee=20

Folks,

We've got draft-ietf-karp-crypto-key-table with some table entries and
draft-ietf-ospf-auth-trailer-ospfv3 with some table entries. The two
don't match. I think this is bad. Can we work to align them?

These appear to be useful questions that we need to answer before we
send keytables for publication.
I look forward to comments from the authors.

However, since the proposed reference to keytables in the
design-guidelines is to the concept, not a normative reference to the
specific document, I am not sure I understand why those detail issues
are an objection to the conceptual reference in the design guidelines
document.
Can you clarify?

Yours,
Joel

In addition to this the LocalKeyID and PeerKeyID defined in karp-crypto-tab=
le are 15 bit values (the MSB is reserved). This cant even accommodate the =
key size specified in RFC 5310 and several other routing security drafts. S=
o the least that needs to be done is to increase this to 17 bits.

When doing draft-ietf-ospf-auth-trailer-ospfv3 there was some discussion on=
the key size and we had reached a consensus on keeping the key size (equiv=
alent of LocalKeyID and PeerKeyID) as 32 bits. It would thus make sense to =
increase the LocalKeyID and PeerKeyID sizes in the karp-crypto-table to at =
least 32 or 33 bits.

Cheers, Manav

This was discussed during the last call of the ospf v3 draft. My
understanding is that we believed that the crypto-key-table draft is not
mature enough to depend on. We tried to use the KARP key table for
draft-ietf-ospf-security-extension-manual-keying-01.txt and ran into a
multi-month block that is still blocked. I propose that we align OSPF
and the KARP crypto table in that draft, but given the delays so far we
don't hold a post-ietf-lc draft to that.

As there are open issues on the draft, how can we be sure that this =
draft will become an RFC and ultimately be published? Would this be a =
normative or informative reference in the KARP design guide?=20

Manav responded here:
	<http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/karp/current/msg00821.html>
but with a narrow engineering issue about the bit length
of a particular field, rather than with any objection to the concept
-- and Joel was clearly and precisely asking about the concept alone.

Then Acee responded here:
	<http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/karp/current/msg00823.html>
but asked whether there would be a normative reference
to the Key Tables I-D -- which Joel *already* answered
above with "not a normative reference to the specific document".

So I don't see either of those notes to the KARP list
as actually responsive to Joel's precise question.

The practical reality is that any implementation of routing
protocol authentication using cryptography has to have some
internal form of a key table. The engineering details of
how a particular implementation might code that capability
are both beyond the contents of the current Key Table I-D
and also well beyond the scope of the Design Guide -- as
it should be.

However, having an internal key table of some sort is simply
*unavoidable* for any implementation supporting cryptographic
routing authentication. Its existence is mandated by numerous
RFCs, for example RFC-2328 Section D.3 (which I wrote long ago).

For the record, I do support a reference to the concept
of a key table and I agree with Joel that a normative
reference to the specific Key Tables I-D is not needed
for the Design Guide.

Yours,

Ran

I'd agree with that as well.

Hi, all,

Following up on my view about the keytable issue, based on a lengthy
discussion I had this AM with Ron Bonica on this:

There are three basic components in automatic keying:

	- a key negotiation/exchange protocol
		here, IKEv2

	- something that uses keys to protect messages
here at the transport layer, TCP-AO
and at other layers various message-signing mechanisms

	- something that manages key use
THIS is the missing part, AFAICT

Gatekeeper is a KMS - it is the key manager system. More specifically,
it manages the meta-information about keys - lifetime, key exchange
tags, etc. It need not ever contain key values.

This is true across all KARP solutions - the "keytable" describes a
place where keys are stored, but that is an artifact of an
implementation. In TCP-AO, these are inside AO. In IPsec, they're inside
IPsec. But that's not the component we need to describe - all keying
mechanisms have a place they store the keys they use.

What we need to describe (if at all) is the KMS as distinct from the
keying protocol and the key-use mechanism.

Joe

Aha. I wasn't responding to Joel's question. I was merely trying to point o=
ut that there is work left to be done in the crypto-key-table document. I s=
ent my note because Sean has a DISCUSS saying that certain fields used in d=
raft-ietf-ospf-auth-trailer-ospfv3 must align with the crypto-key-table doc=
ument.

I concede that my point would have been clearer if I had chosen to respond =
to the right thread.

Cheers, Manav

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies. This draft is a work item of the Keying and Authentication for Routing=
Protocols Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Keying and Authentication for Routing Protocols (KARP) D=
esign Guidelines
	Author(s) : Gregory M. Lebovitz
                          Manav Bhatia
	Filename : draft-ietf-karp-design-guide-08.txt
	Pages : 31
	Date : 2011-11-21

This document is one of a series concerned with defining a
roadmap of protocol specification work for the use of modern
cryptographic mechanisms and algorithms for message
authentication in routing protocols. In particular, it defines
the framework for a key management protocol that may be used to
create and manage session keys for message authentication and
      integrity.
