Folks, trying to resolve the domain based name drafts.

In the base spec, the IANA considerations does not describe which registry IANA should make an OID assignment in.

Also, the text sounds like you are recommending a value for the ASN.1
OID string.
However your recommended value includes underscores; I didn't think that was permitted.

I think you want to separate the OID assignment from the recommended constant name (and value) for C bindings.

Section 5 seems to normatively introduce gss_import_name_utf8. The
specification of that function is not sufficient for implementation.
In addition, I didn't think we planned to introduce import_name_utf8
or display_name_utf8 in this spec. I thought we intended to have an
informational note explaining how those functions will deal with the
domain based names.
The behavior for ACE encodings ing existings functions does need to be normative.

The kerberos draft still uses .tld examples rather than .example
examples.

Another important issue:
The ABNF is hugely garbled in the draft.

There seem to be some mistake here. The parent OID had no underscores

OK, this is not a problem.

Yes. IANA gets a pass at the document before it makes it onto the
RFC-Editor queue, so this did not trouble me.

-05 says:

IANA is requested to assign a new OID for the new GSS-API name type
defined in this document. This OID should have the following prefix:

   {iso(1) org(3) dod(6) internet(1) security(5) nametypes(6) gss-
   domain-based(5)}

No underscores there... :)

> I think you want to separate the OID assignment from the recommended

The constant name is not being registered (there being no registry for
the name). Hmmm... Is there even a registry for {iso(1) org(3) dod(6)
internet(1) security(5) nametypes(6)}? I don't see one.

I what way is it not sufficient?

I don't see why we cannot introduce these here. These functions are
pretty much the result of the discussions at Chicago and on the list.

It isn't?

Oops, I can fix that.

Did you mean to say something other than quoting me? :) Or is this a
hint that I should just submit a new I-D?

I think you do want to say what constant people should use; I don't
think you can register it since there is no registry.

Doesn't define inputs, outputs, statuses, semantics. Yes, a lot of
this text will be copied from the existing spec. However if you are
going to define new functions you need to actually specify all the
things that 2743 does for the functions.

They are not within the scope of the draft.

No, I was making it clear that this should not change.

Either way, there's no registry even for that OID arc.

I disagree. The text reads:

Support for non-ASCII internationalized domain names SHOULD be
provided through a new function, GSS_Import_name_utf8(), that
operates exactly like GSS_Import_name(), except that it MUST accept
internationalized domain names both, as UTF-8 strings and as ACE-
encoded strings via its input_name_string argument.

GSS_Import_name_utf8() is defined in terms of GSS_Import_name(). I
think that should be sufficient. Perhaps the text should be a bit
clearer ("operates exactly like" might not imply "has the same input
and output parameters" to some readers), but otherwise I think that
cutting and pasting text from RFC2743 and RFC2744 would do a disservice
to readers.

Please elaborate; why not?

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Kitten (GSS-API Next Generation) Working Group of the IETF.

Title : GSS-API Internationalization and Domain-Based Service Names and Name Type
	Author(s) : N. Williams, A. Melnikov
	Filename : draft-ietf-kitten-gssapi-domain-based-names-06.txt
	Pages : 13
	Date : 2008-01-25

This document describes domainname-based service principal names and
the corresponding name type for the Generic Security Service
Application Programming Interface (GSS-API). Internationalization of
the GSS-API is also covered.

Domain-based service names are similar to host-based service names,
but using a domain name (not necessarily an Internet domain name) in
addition to a hostname. The primary purpose of domain-based names is
to provide a measure of protection to applications that utilize
insecure service discovery protocols. This is achieved by providing
a way to name clustered services after the "domain" which they
service, thereby allowing their clients to authorize the service's
servers based on authentication of their service names.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-kitten-gssapi-domain-based-names-06.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of
the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the
username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-kitten-gssapi-domain-based-names-06.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-kitten-gssapi-domain-based-names-06.txt".

NOTE: The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Kitten (GSS-API Next Generation) Working Group of the IETF.

Title : GSS-API Domain-Based Service Names Mapping for the Kerberos V GSS Mechanism
	Author(s) : N. Williams
	Filename : draft-ietf-kitten-krb5-gssapi-domain-based-names-05.txt
	Pages : 6
	Date : 2008-01-25

This document describes the mapping of GSS-API domainname-based
service principal names onto Kerberos V principal names.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-kitten-krb5-gssapi-domain-based-names-05.txt

After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-kitten-krb5-gssapi-domain-based-names-05.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-kitten-krb5-gssapi-domain-based-names-05.txt".

I've fixed this. There is no such registry, therefore there are no IANA
considerations. However, the manner in which the OID was obtained is
now described.

Now we just out and out allocate it.

There were no underscores in the OID in the I-D.

This is now irrelevant :)

I believe the *_utf8() functions belong in this document. I see no
reason to publish a separate RFC just describing those two functions.
I've seen no objections from the WG, but if desired we can call for
consensus. I've updated the description, however, to be more exact.

The *_utf8() functions are recommended, while the ACE behaviour of the
regular functions is required.

Fixed.

New I-Ds have been submitted.

KITTEN doesn't work on mechanisms either, but KITTEN is appropriate for
discussion of GSS-API naming issues. So, yes, we should take this to
the KITTEN list, though eventually PKU2U will be off-topic there also.

I agree, PKU2U is clearly not in KITTEN's charter. However, IMHO it is an
appropriate source for expert advice on GSS-API naming issues, and for
expertise on GSS-API in general. I believe its members have been asked to
look at PKU2U in the past, and their comments would certainly be welcome
now, as it nears completion.

Well, that might work given the text I gave Larry in a very specific
context, namely that if one of the arguments to GSS_Compare_name() is a
NAME object imported with GSS_Import_name() but not canonicalized and
the other argument is a NAME object that is what I called a CMN (and
therefore there's an underlying cert) then the comparison could be true
if that cert had a id-pkinit-san SAN with that krb5 principal name.

I'm not sure that we actually want GSS_Compare_name() to sport such
behaviour, as opposed to having a new function that does, because it's
pushing things a bit to say that the two NAME objects passed to it are
equal representations of the same principal. They are representations
of the same principal name, just not _equal_ representations of it.

I think I'd want a GSS_Match_name() function, or something, to embody
this kind of functionality.

That's OK. GSS_Compare_name is defined to return a true result when the
names represent the same entity, not only when they are the same. This
appears to be exactly what GSS_Compare_name is for, so no, I don't think we
need a new interface for this.

OK, good. Then I think the text I gave Larry is pretty close.

I suppose we need to decide what name-types *must* be supported. I
propose:

 - GSS_C_NT_DN (because that's what the canonical names will be based
on! it simply must be supported)

 - GSS_C_NT_HOSTBASED_SERVICE (because most acceptors will be hosts and
generic GSS apps will be using this name-type)

 - GSS_KRB5_PRINCIPAL_NAME (because, PKU2U being built on PKINIT
technology, it should be trivial to support this when id-pkinit-san
   is present)

The other name-types should all be optional.

Since I'm not on that list, I'll throw my 2 cents in here:

It would be nice if you could do a gss_compare_name() between
smith@EXAMPLE.COM and uid=smith,ou=People,dc=example,dc=com and get a
"true" result. I think the detail you threw out was headed in that
direction, but it wasn't clear to me if it would get you all the way
there.
