Hello,

I have adapted the "Kerberos Realm Names in DNS" draft with the
intention to represent our collective views:
 * Use TXT records instead of KREALM
 * Consider only the first <character-string> in RDATA; more is for
future extension
 * Informal spec name is now _kerberos TXT
If you like, you're welcome to add any further comments on the result.

The document does not break RFC 4120 AFAIK, making it suitable for
submission as an Independent Submission, although I would also support
adoption by the WG to call it an IETF spec.

If I hear nothing more, I will proceed towards submission to the RFC
Editor. In any case, thanks for the lively discussions and insightful
comments!

Cheers,
 -Rick

Looking over the traffic from the WGLC period, it seems that some
revisions to the document are required. Going over the list's archive:

Greg noted that there was some ambiguity in section 2.4 regarding the
contents of the KRB-ERROR message in the case when a supplied freshness
token is not valid, in his message at
http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/kitten/current/msg05783.html .

That message also raised the question of using KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_FAILED for
a retriable answer, which does not seem to have been resolved yet. With
no hat on, I'm inclined to avoid KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_FAILED for retriable
errors.

Greg also made some editorial comments in that same message.

Bryce Nordgren also found an editorial change in
http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/kitten/current/msg05794.html (the
content question in that message seems to have been resolved in subsequent
list traffic).

Bryce also notes in a later message that the document should say that the
implementation-defined validation procedure must actually guarantee
freshness. Something similar to Greg's explanation in
http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/kitten/current/msg05795.html might be
reasonable, say, in the security considerations.

I also supplied a couple editorial comments in
http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/kitten/current/msg05801.html

jhutz made some (mostly) editorial suggestions in his review,
http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/kitten/current/msg05802.html (some of
the non-editorial comments are mitigated by Greg's follow-up in
http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/kitten/current/msg05803.html )

This question from jhutz's message remains unresolved:
"Do we need to call out that a client MUST use a freshness token it got
during an earlier iteration of the same AS exchange? So, for example,
it can't change its mind about principal names or KDC options or
requested AD and still expect the freshness token to be valid?" I don't
think this is a particularly critical issue, so it may suffice to just
note that a KDC implementation MAY bind the freshness token to parameters
in the AS-REQ, so the client implementation should use the freshness token
it got during an earlier iteration of the same AS exchange or be prepared
to handle failures resulting from the KDC validation failure for the
binding to the AS-REQ parameter(s).

Can you please generate a revised I-D addressing these comments (i.e.,
including proposed resolutions to the as-yet-unresolved questions)?
Depending on the scope of the changes, another WGLC may be needed; if the
changes are minor and uncontroversial, we might be able to skip it.

Thanks,

Ben

This message begins the second Working Group Last Call (WGLC) of "Kerberos
Authorization Data Container Authenticated by Multiple MACs"
<draft-ietf-kitten-cammac-03>. A previous version of this document was
approved by the IESG for publication, but while the document was in the
RFC Editor queue, an error was discovered regarding processing CAMMACs in
cross-realm TGTs [0] that required changes to the document, so it was
brought back to the working group for further modifications.

Although the changes since the previously approved version are only in the
Security Considerations section, the entire document is open for review
during this WGLC. The WGLC will last two weeks, ending on Sunday, October
18th. The draft is available at:

https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-kitten-cammac-03

A diff of the changes since the previously approved version is available
at:

https://tools.ietf.org/rfcdiff?url2=draft-ietf-kitten-cammac-03.txt&url1=draft-ietf-kitten-cammac-01.txt

Please review the document and send comments to the Working Group mailing
list kitten@ietf.org or the co-chairs kitten-chairs@ietf.org before the
end of the WGLC. Any and all comments on the document are sought in order
to access the strength of consensus. Even if you have read and commented
on this or earlier versions of the draft, please feel free to comment
again. This is particularly important if you found issues with the
previous version.

As a reminder, comments can be anything from "this looks fine" to "this is
a horrible idea"; they can include suggestions for minor editorial
corrections to significant editorial changes.

Dear Scott and Simon,

I have reviewed the latest version of the draft-ietf-kitten-sasl-saml-ec
(v13). In my opinion, the document is well written and very clear, and
it is relatively easy to follow if you are somewhat familiar with SAML,
SASL and GSS-API. The outline of the SAML ECP profile given in section 3
is really helpful to avoid sending the reader to check the [SAMLECP20]
document right-away , and the example given in section 6 is clarifying
and helps to understand how the proposal works.

There are however a few minor points that are not clear to me, so I'd
appreciate if you could clarify them:

#1 In the document, the difference between SAML20EC and SAML20EC-PLUS is
not clearly described. There is only a brief mention in section 4
indicating that the latter one means that ChannelBindings are supported,
but there are not further explanation nor mention. If you are not
familiar with RFC5801 (I wasn't), you need to figure out that the -PLUS
suffix comes from that document. I think adding a reference to 5801 at
this point would be useful.

#2 Section 4 is titled "SAML SASL Mechanism Specification", when I think
it would be more correct titling it as "SAML Enhanced Client SASL
Mechanism Specification" (as in the document title).

#3 Should

"If the client is unable to obtain a response from the IdP, or must
otherwise signal, failure, it responds to the SASL server with a
SOAP envelope containing a SOAP fault."

actually be

"If the client is unable to obtain a response from the IdP, or must
otherwise signal a failure, it responds to the SASL server with a
SOAP envelope containing a SOAP fault."

?

#4 Section 4.7. A reference to section 5.6.2 might be useful here to
figure out what a "service name" looks like.

#5 Section 4.7. Does the URI format allow using "service@host" as a
value? (just asking)

#6 Section 4.7. I found problems parsing the following sentence (I'm not
a native speaker, so please ignore my comment if the sentence is correct)

"The value MUST be securely associated with the SAML entityID claimed
by the SASL server by the identity provider, such as ..."

To be more specific, two "by" too close in the same sentence made me
confused about who was making the association.

#7 Section 5, paragraph 2. I think referring to RFC 5801 would provide
further explanation on why this is done in this way.

#8 Section 5, paragraph 4. Should "mutual-auth" be "mut" instead?

#9 Section 5.6.2. There is a repetition of great part of the text about
the responseConsumerURL and AssertionConsumerServiceURL from section 4.7.

Best regards,
Alejandro

Abstract:
Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) 2.0 is a generalized
framework for the exchange of security-related information between
asserting and relying parties. Simple Authentication and Security
Layer (SASL) and the Generic Security Service Application Program
Interface (GSS-API) are application frameworks to facilitate an
extensible authentication model. This document specifies a SASL and
GSS-API mechanism for SAML 2.0 that leverages the capabilities of a
SAML-aware "enhanced client" to address significant barriers to
federated authentication in a manner that encourages reuse of
existing SAML bindings and profiles designed for non-browser
   scenarios.

Hello Kitten,

I've posted an I-D to support pseudonymity in Kerberos; I would like to
have this more refined privacy model for realm crossover to diminish
trust assumptions that need to be made on foreign realms.

Briefly put, pseudonyms can be applied during TGS, based on a KDC option
+ ticket flag. When the ticket flag is set, the KDC is assumed to
support pseudonymity, and the cname field in TGS-REQ can be filled with
a requested client name; when left out, the KDC is given the permission
to apply pseudonymity if it feels like it.

Any comments on this are highly appreciated.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Common Authentication Technology Next Generation Working Group of the IETF.

Title : SAML Enhanced Client SASL and GSS-API Mechanisms
        Authors : Scott Cantor
                          Simon Josefsson
	Filename : draft-ietf-kitten-sasl-saml-ec-14.txt
	Pages : 39
	Date : 2015-10-10

FYI, an I-D that I just proposed to the TLS WG.

-Rick

      ----- >8 ------ >8 ------ >8 ------ >8 -----

Hello TLS WG,

I would like to propose new CipherSuites for TLS. The cryptography is
founded on Kerberos authentication and DH encryption, cryptographically
bound together. The mechanism uses mutual authentication, although
clients may use anonymous tickets.

Any feedback that you may have (technical, or WG-procedural) is kindly
welcomed. I will also send this to the Kitten WG.

Thanks,
Rick van Rein

The new security considerations next looks good to me. (No great
surprise since I had reviewed it prior to the draft update, but I
re-read it for the WGLC and it still looks fine.)

Sorry for the delay in responding, but before I published the next draft, I=
wanted to review all the feedback from the beginning since a couple of thi=
ngs keep coming back. Hoping we can get closure in email rather than having=
another discussion after the next draft. I did not provide the editorial c=
hanges since I do not think they are controversial.=20

There was feedback to tightening up the intro:

Previous version
1. Introduction
The Kerberos PKINIT extension [RFC4556] defines two schemes for using asymm=
etric cryptography in a Kerberos preauthenticator. One uses Diffie-Hellman=
key exchange and the other depends on public key encryption. The public k=
ey encryption scheme is less commonly used for two reasons:
o Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) Support for PKINIT [RFC5349] only spec=
ified Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) key agreement, so it cannot be u=
sed for public key encryption.
o Public key encryption requires certificates with an encryption key, that=
is not deployed on many existing smart cards.

In the Diffie-Hellman exchange, the client uses its private key only to sig=
n the AuthPack structure (specified in Section 3.2.1 of [RFC4556]), that is=
performed before any traffic is sent to the KDC. Thus a client can generat=
e requests with future times in the PKAuthenticator, and then send those re=
quests at those future times. Unless the time is outside the validity perio=
d of the client's certificate, the KDC will validate the PKAuthenticator an=
d return a TGT the client can use without possessing the private key.

As a result, a client performing PKINIT with the Diffie-Hellman key exchang=
e does not prove current possession of the private key being used for authe=
ntication. It proves only prior use of that key. Ensuring that the client =
has current possession of the private key requires that the signed PKAuthen=
ticator data include information that the client could not have predicted.

Proposed revision
1. Introduction
The Kerberos PKINIT extension [RFC4556] defines two schemes for using asymm=
etric cryptography in a Kerberos preauthenticator. In the Diffie-Hellman e=
xchange, the client uses its private key only to sign the AuthPack structur=
e (specified in Section 3.2.1 of [RFC4556]), that is performed before any t=
raffic is sent to the KDC. Thus a client can generate requests with future =
times in the PKAuthenticator, and then send those requests at those future =
times. Unless the time is outside the validity period of the client's certi=
ficate, the KDC will validate the PKAuthenticator and return a TGT the clie=
nt can use without possessing the private key.

Client requesting freshness behavior discussions:

We have the client request freshness for multiple reasons
	1. RFC 4120 Section 1.5.2 specifies that the KDC should only use new exten=
sions if the padata element is present in the AS-REQ.
	2. KDC performance impact. The KDC cannot tell the difference between an A=
S ping for a password-based client vs certificate if the client does not ex=
plicitly ask for the token. Many (maybe most) realms are a mix of password-=
based and certificates. =20
	3. In Windows Active Directory, accounts configured with AltSecID can rece=
ive a principal not found error and fail logon when the normal password AS =
ping is sent since the cname is not in the global catalog. By requesting th=
e freshness token, the KDC can choose to return the preauth failure with th=
e token when the account cannot be found. =20

KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_FAILED vs KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_EXPIRED=20
The first thing I can think of is that currently the draft only requires RF=
C 4120 & 4556 and FAST is just an informative reference (not to mention tha=
t the error is MAY and not in all implementations of FAST). Not sure what t=
he precedence is for pulling just the error behavior from an RFC.

We choose KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_FAILED because it was supported already and "Pre-=
authentication information was invalid" seemed accurate for the situation.=
=20

KDC validation behavior:
Every time I release a version this comes up. :) There already is a precede=
nt in IETF for not standardizing the KDC-only elements. The consensus is th=
at there are lots of ways to do this and the standard will not specify it.=
=20

How about the following to cover KDC requirements and upgrade advice:

7. Security Considerations
A freshness token can prove recent possession of the key only if:
1. The freshness token cannot pre-generated.
2. The KDC can determine authenticity and prevent tampering.
Kerberos error messages are not integrity protected unless
authenticated using Kerberos FAST [RFC6113]. Even if FAST is
required to provide integrity protection, a different KDC would
not be able to validate freshness tokens without some kind of
shared database which is unlikely as most KDCs are stateless.
Signing, encrypting or sealing data SHOULD be used.
3. Reuse of a freshness token is only valid within the allowable
time window. Freshness tokens are not required to be single use
tokens or bound to specific AS exchanges, simply to guarantee
that the client had the key during the allowable time window.
Part of the reason the token is opaque is to allow KDC
implementers the freedom to add additional functionality as long
       as the "freshness" guarantee remains.
4. The client returns the freshness token. Since upgrading clients
takes time, implementers may consider allowing both unproven
and fresh authentications. As long as freshness tokens are not
required then pre-generated PKAuthenticators can be used.

Looking over the traffic from the WGLC period, it seems that some revisions=
to the document are required. Going over the list's archive:

Greg noted that there was some ambiguity in section 2.4 regarding the conte=
nts of the KRB-ERROR message in the case when a supplied freshness token is=
not valid, in his message at http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/kitten/c=
urrent/msg05783.html .

That message also raised the question of using KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_FAILED for a=
retriable answer, which does not seem to have been resolved yet. With no =
hat on, I'm inclined to avoid KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_FAILED for retriable errors.

Greg also made some editorial comments in that same message.

Bryce Nordgren also found an editorial change in http://www.ietf.org/mail-a=
rchive/web/kitten/current/msg05794.html (the content question in that messa=
ge seems to have been resolved in subsequent list traffic).

Bryce also notes in a later message that the document should say that the i=
mplementation-defined validation procedure must actually guarantee freshnes=
s. Something similar to Greg's explanation in http://www.ietf.org/mail-arc=
hive/web/kitten/current/msg05795.html might be reasonable, say, in the secu=
rity considerations.

I also supplied a couple editorial comments in http://www.ietf.org/mail-arc=
hive/web/kitten/current/msg05801.html

jhutz made some (mostly) editorial suggestions in his review, http://www.ie=
tf.org/mail-archive/web/kitten/current/msg05802.html (some of the non-edito=
rial comments are mitigated by Greg's follow-up in http://www.ietf.org/mail=
-archive/web/kitten/current/msg05803.html )

This question from jhutz's message remains unresolved:
"Do we need to call out that a client MUST use a freshness token it got dur=
ing an earlier iteration of the same AS exchange? So, for example, it can'=
t change its mind about principal names or KDC options or requested AD and =
still expect the freshness token to be valid?" I don't think this is a par=
ticularly critical issue, so it may suffice to just note that a KDC impleme=
ntation MAY bind the freshness token to parameters in the AS-REQ, so the cl=
ient implementation should use the freshness token it got during an earlier=
iteration of the same AS exchange or be prepared to handle failures result=
ing from the KDC validation failure for the binding to the AS-REQ parameter=
(s).

Can you please generate a revised I-D addressing these comments (i.e., incl=
uding proposed resolutions to the as-yet-unresolved questions)?
Depending on the scope of the changes, another WGLC may be needed; if the c=
hanges are minor and uncontroversial, we might be able to skip it.

Thanks,

Ben

I'm not asking to get rid of the request, but I want to reiterate that I
don't think this is a correct reading of RFC 4120 section 1.5.2. We
know exactly what an old client will do with a PA-AS-FRESHNESS value in
METHOD-DATA: ignore it. We have relied on this client behavior numerous
times in the past, such as when we added PA-ETYPE-INFO and PA-ETYPE-INFO2.

> 2. KDC performance impact. The KDC cannot tell the difference between an AS ping for a password-based client vs certificate if the client does not explicitly ask for the token. Many (maybe most) realms are a mix of password-based and certificates.

There are other ways to address any performance impact such as reusing
freshness tokens, but I understand the desire for simplicity.

> 3. In Windows Active Directory, accounts configured with AltSecID can receive a principal not found error and fail logon when the normal password AS ping is sent since the cname is not in the global catalog. By requesting the freshness token, the KDC can choose to return the preauth failure with the token when the account cannot be found.

I don't understand this. What is the message sequence? Do you want to
return a freshness token in a KDC_ERR_C_PRINCIPAL_UNKNOWN error?

> KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_FAILED vs KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_EXPIRED
> The first thing I can think of is that currently the draft only requires RFC 4120 & 4556 and FAST is just an informative reference (not to mention that the error is MAY and not in all implementations of FAST). Not sure what the precedence is for pulling just the error behavior from an RFC.

I don't think there is any problem with making RFC 6113 a normative
reference just to use the error code. We would not be requiring KDCs or
clients to implement FAST; RFC 6113 describes a general framework for
pre-authentication, with FAST as one component.

> We choose KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_FAILED because it was supported already and "Pre-authentication information was invalid" seemed accurate for the situation.

In MIT krb5, would be rather difficult for us to perform a retry of the
same preauth mechanism after KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_FAILED without creating
unfortunate edge cases. (For example, we definitely don't want to retry
encrypted timestamp after KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_FAILED, because of password
lockout.) Most likely we would wind up ignoring that part of the spec
and fail out when a freshness token expired due to prompting delay.

In contrast, we already (in 1.14) perform a retry from scratch on
KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_EXPIRED, so we would not need to make any changes to the
core preauth code.

> 7. Security Considerations

This looks mostly okay aside from editorial concerns, except:

> 2. The KDC can determine authenticity and prevent tampering.

Discussing FAST here seems confusing than helpful. FAST protects
against some kinds of tampering by a network attacker, but wouldn't even
begin to protect against a rogue client tampering with the contents of
the freshness token (e.g. changing a timestamp to make an old token look
new).

Just four days remain in this WGLC.
We've already gotten some comments from Greg, but more review would be
most welcome.

There=E2=80=99s been work on improved password change protocols, but =

at least for handling cross-realm principals.

Are there any password change protocols where you can supply the enctype =
and a key instead of a text password? Or is the only way to do that via =
the kdc=E2=80=99s kadmin interface.

I vaguely recall an explicit decision not to continue with that work

This is probably obvious, but any such facility allows the client to
circumvent password policies, and therefore usually require special
permissions.

I believe you are correct that in current implementations, the only way
to do that is via implementation-specific admin interfaces.

Another mode I would find interesting is one where the server makes up a
new password and tells you what it is. I don't know if it would get
much use (I've never seen passwords managed that way in any
environment), but it seems like a reasonable way to mitigate risk.

I see a set_keys() operation in there. I don=E2=80=99t think I=E2=80=99m =
likely to implement it though.

Given PKINIT and FAST/OTP, all you need is a policy which says =
NO-PASSWORDS. ;-)

I once built a service which chose users=E2=80=99 passwords and emailed =
them to them. I didn=E2=80=99t have to implement any set/change password =
functionality and the reset function was dead simple.

The above draft supports it. What would be nice is if you could update =
application servers' keytabs *before* the kdc started issuing tickets =
with the new keys.

Greg, as always, thanks for the fast response.

In regards to the client request behavior, the bottom line is that I would =
prefer not to remove it from the RFC. We can make is optional, but it would=
need to be required to interoperate with some Microsoft Active Directory d=
omains. We may be the only PKINIT implementation impacted. I don't know.

>> 3. In Windows Active Directory, accounts configured with AltSe=
cID can receive a principal not found error and fail logon when the normal =
password AS ping is sent since the cname is not in the global catalog. By r=
equesting the freshness token, the KDC can choose to return the preauth fai=
lure with the token when the account cannot be found.

> I don't understand this. What is the message sequence? Do you want to r=
eturn a freshness token in a KDC_ERR_C_PRINCIPAL_UNKNOWN error?

No, the message sequence is that the client requests freshness, so the KDC =
can ignore the principal not found issue and return the freshness token wit=
h preauthn required. Then when they have preauth, the KDC can find the acco=
unt and proceed as normal.

In regards to the error, I'll update the draft to use KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_EXPIR=
ED and make FAST a normative reference. If anyone disagrees, then speak up.

>> 7. Security Considerations

>> 2. The KDC can determine authenticity and prevent tampering.

> Discussing FAST here seems confusing than helpful. FAST protects against=
some kinds of tampering by a network attacker, but wouldn't even begin to =
protect against a rogue client tampering with the contents of the freshness=
token (e.g. changing a timestamp to make an old token look new).

I have removed the FAST statement and gotten bit of feedback on our side so=
I'll shoot another proposed draft later today.

Thanks,
Michiko Short

&gt; There&rsquo;s been work on improved password change protocols, but I&rsquo;m not sure how much actually completed. I also remember once suggesting that loading a KDB entry from a keytab file would be useful, at least for handling cross-realm principals.<br/>
<br/>
I believe the most recent work is:<br/>
<br/>
<a href="https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-krb-wg-kerberos-set-passwd-08" target="_blank">https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-krb-wg-kerberos-set-passwd-08</a><br/>
<br/>
I vaguely recall an explicit decision not to continue with that work<br/>
because no one believed they were likely to implement it.<br/>
<br/>
&gt; Are there any password change protocols where you can supply the enctype and a key instead of a text password?<br/>
<br/>
This is probably obvious, but any such facility allows the client to<br/>
circumvent password policies, and therefore usually require special<br/>
permissions.<br/>
<br/>
I believe you are correct that in current implementations, the only way<br/>
to do that is via implementation-specific admin interfaces.<br/>
<br/>
Another mode I would find interesting is one where the server makes up a<br/>
new password and tells you what it is. I don&#39;t know if it would get<br/>
much use (I&#39;ve never seen passwords managed that way in any<br/>
environment), but it seems like a reasonable way to mitigate risk.<br/>
