        DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17487/RFC7751

This document specifies a Kerberos authorization data container that
supersedes AD-KDC-ISSUED. It allows for multiple Message
Authentication Codes (MACs) or signatures to authenticate the
contained authorization data elements. The multiple MACs are needed
to mitigate shortcomings in the existing AD-KDC-ISSUED container.
This document updates RFC 4120.

This document is a product of the Common Authentication Technology Next Generation Working Group of the IETF.

This is now a Proposed Standard.

STANDARDS TRACK: This document specifies an Internet Standards Track
protocol for the Internet community, and requests discussion and suggestions
for improvements. Please refer to the current edition of the Official
Internet Protocol Standards (https://www.rfc-editor.org/standards) for the
standardization state and status of this protocol. Distribution of this

This document defines the Pseudo-Random Function (PRF) for the
Kerberos V mechanism for the Generic Security Service Application
Program Interface (GSS-API), based on the PRF defined for the
Kerberos V cryptographic framework, for keying application protocols
given an established Kerberos V GSS-API security context.

This document obsoletes RFC 4402 and reclassifies that document as
Historic. RFC 4402 starts the PRF+ counter at 1; however, a number
of implementations start the counter at 0. As a result, the original
specification would not be interoperable with existing
implementations.

Hello,

Over the past months, I've had a student working on a proof-of-concept
for Realm Crossover with Kerberos, based on DNSSEC/DANE. He will soon
deliver his MSc thesis, which I might forward to interested parties.

The work done concludes that it is not possible to entirely base it on
PKINIT and AS-REQ/AS-REP, so I set out to define alternative message
structures. I have reached a stage where things almost seem simple to
me :) so may I ask for feedback on those?

I created a heavily commented ASN.1 module in a number of formats,
available on

http://realm-xover.arpa2.net/spec/KXOVER.html
http://realm-xover.arpa2.net/spec/KXOVER.txt
http://realm-xover.arpa2.net/spec/KXOVER.epub
http://realm-xover.arpa2.net/spec/KXOVER.asn1
http://realm-xover.arpa2.net/spec/KXOVER.pdf

This is in preparation of an I-D. As far as I'm concerned, this could
be a useful topic for discussion at IETF 95.

Thanks,
 -Rick

AFAIK we=E2=80=99ve never done much with standardizing authorization =
data. (I have to accept some of the blame for that myself, =
unfortunately.)

Now I find myself wanting to do a proprietary extension. Any advice =
(besides =E2=80=9Cdon=E2=80=99t do it=E2=80=9D)? I=E2=80=99d at least =
like to minimize the side effects on standard uses.

Well, we did just publish RFC 7751 (CAMMAC) and have a working group
draft for ad-authentication-indicator. But it's true that we haven't
done a lot with it.

> Now I find myself wanting to do a proprietary extension. Any advice (besides “don’t do it”)? I’d at least like to minimize the side effects on standard uses.

Negative ad-type values are reserved for local use, positive values for
registered use. (RFC 4120 section 5.2.6.)

Be aware of the security properties of authorization data:

* It's not visible to the client or to third parties because it's in the
encrypted part of the ticket. It is visible to the service and the KDC.

* Clients can ask for any authorization data they want when requesting a
ticket, and by default the KDC is supposed to include it. KDCs may
filter out certain ad-types, but only if they know what they are.
AD-KDC-ISSUED or AD-CAMMAC containers can be used to ensure to a service
that authorization data was issued according to KDC policy.

* Services can forge authorization data in the ticket when making a
ticket modification request or S4U2Proxy request to the KDC.
AD-KDC-ISSUED does not change this. AD-CAMMAC containers can be used to
ensure to the KDC that authorization data was issued according to KDC
policy, as long as the kdc-verifier is present and verifies correctly.

* Authorization data contained in a cross-realm TGT was, at best, issued
according to the policy of the source realm, not the target realm.

* Authorization data is supposed to be critical by default (unless
enclosed in an AD-IF-RELEVANT container), but I don't think any
implementation enforces this, so in practice it's all non-critical.

Hello,

FYI, I have completed a new I-D version for integration of Kerberos
(entwined with ECDH) into TLS. I announced it at the TLS-WG but thought
Kitten should know about it too.

The central choice made in this draft is to embed Kerberos Ticket +
Authenticator in the client X.509 Certificate, and use an Authenticator
as ClientVerify. This is awkward, but it means that the rest of the
integration with TLS is very smooth.

FWIW, a demonstration of the embedded Tickets in an X.509 certificate
can be found on https://github.com/arpa2/kerberos2pkix -- inluding a
shell dump and a certificate example.

I have a few comments, although I haven't dug too deeply.

* Are you sending these messages to the regular KDC ports, and then
having the KDC dispatch them to a different process, or are you using a
separate daemon? I'm not sure whether these messages are part of the
Kerberos protocol or not.

* Wrapping the messages in padata and
KX-REQ/KDC-REQ-MOD/KX-REP/KDC-REP-MOD seems to add a lot of complexity
for no obvious benefit. Can KX-PA-DATA messages be sent directly
instead? (With an application tag, if they're part of the Kerberos
protocol, and of course with a different sequence name.) If there is a
need for a typed hole in the new message type, a pa-data sequence can be
included in the KX messages. Or the ASN.1 sequences can be made
extensible (a good practice anyway) and extensions can require
standardization, if we don't think there is likely to be lots of
independent interest in extending this particular message type.

* Since DANE is being leveraged as an anchor, I wonder if it would be
possible to cut out X.509 and PKIX, without having to reinvent them.
Could we store eddsa public keys in DNS and send eddsa signatures, for
instance? I realize there might be issues with key rollover and DNS
caching, but I don't know whether those issues are automatically solved
by using certificates.

Hello Greg,

Thanks for looking into this.

Yes, this is the intention. That's why I've used [APPLICATION] tags
that differ from what Kerberos is using now (according to my grep over
RFCs that responded to "grep Kerberos").

The reason for coupling KDCs directly is so we can establish crossover
keys between realms that service all their users at once, for the
agreed-upon period of time. Also, the KDC can be expected to have
access to DNSSEC/DANE validation, which may be more questionable for
clients behind uncontrollable middle boxes.

The reason for a different process to which the KDC dispatches is to
avoid filling up the KDC with slow external communication including
timeouts.

FYI, a student of mine (Oriol Caño) worked this flow into AS, in a
different daemon/process, and got it working (with syntax violations for
not passing back a Ticket) as the intended DANE-based construction of
ECDH crossover keys. The only issue we ran into with the kdb API was
that we needed to supply a NUL-terminated ASCII string with a password,
while binary key computations are probably better in this case.

Yes, I think this would be fine. I have tried to stay as close to the
existing packet structure to reduce the chances of trouble, hence the
Reserved fields. But this is certainly something I can use this sort of
input on :)

Yes, of course.

I see no such reason as yet. I'm curious what Nico thinks though; he
has done some preliminary work on PKCROSS which approaches the problem
from a client. That's another reason for the Reserved fields in the
*-MOD structures, to give that approach some wiggling room.

OK. I saw no ",..." in RFC 4120 so I decided not to use it, but I am
quite happy to move in this direction. You're actually saying the
things that I didn't dare to propose!

That would simplify matters, but also disable a few potential benefits:

* certificates signed by a federation CA could be used to mark the
boundaries of that federation
* extended key usage can be helpful to signal that a cert is indeed
meant to be used this way; that enables listing certain client
certificates, if the intention were to let those contact a KDC directly
(as under PKCROSS)
* extended key usage sets the certificates intended for KXOVER apart
from those that, say, merely identify the KDC to their clients as part
of PKINIT

The first may be resolved by explicitly mentioning acceptable pubkeys in
an accepted-remote list in the KDC config.

The second may be resolved if PKCROSS uses its own mechanisms (I can't
think of other EKU signals that could matter).

The third seems important, but may be resolved with a _kxover prefix in DNS.

> I realize there might be issues with key rollover and DNS

I would love to get rid of the timing restrictions in certificates for
KDC use, indeed.

DNS timing issues are probably the same as for DANE. We should
carefully choose our semantics here; it seemds reasonable to state that
the negotiated validity period for a crossover key (bounded by each
KDC's max setting) cannot be reduced by a retraction in DANE. Or we
could state that no new crossovers should be created if DANE is
retracted. Kerberos doesn't seem to be prepared for keys being
withdrawn after they are handed out in client TGTs. Then again, the
situation we're talking about now is drastic.

I wonder if there is a suitable DNS RRtype to do what you are proposing
here?
 * CERT stores X.509 and OpenPGP keys
 * IPSECKEY and TKEY have dedicated/other purposes
We might define an extra case for TLSA, using the public key (or its
hash). Or we might specify to ignore surrounding certificates by
default and strip it down to the public key.

Thanks!
 -Rick

Abstract:
This document describes how to further extend the Public Key
Cryptography for Initial Authentication in Kerberos (PKINIT)
extension [RFC4556] to exchange an opaque data blob that a KDC can
validate to ensure that the client is currently in possession of the
private key during a PKINIT AS exchange.

In section 2.4, I think the cross-reference for KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_FAILED
should be RFC 4120; although RFC 6113 elaborates on its use, the initial
definition is still in 4120.

Other than that small editorial issue, my two comments to -03 are addressed.

Thanks, Greg.

I think the RFC reference mix up was due to 6113 discussing retry (Section =
2). The actual error is, indeed, defined in 4120 (7.5.9).

Cheers,
Seth

Thanks, Greg.

I think the RFC reference mix up was due to 6113 discussing retry (Section =
2). The actual error is, indeed, defined in 4120 (7.5.9).

Cheers,
Seth

In section 2.4, I think the cross-reference for KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_FAILED shou=
ld be RFC 4120; although RFC 6113 elaborates on its use, the initial defini=
tion is still in 4120.

Other than that small editorial issue, my two comments to -03 are addressed=
.

If I read the draft correctly, then failure of the client to comply with
the KDC's idea of proper freshness quoting can end up in an infinite
cycle of KRB-ERROR with freshness tokens? There is a remark about
receiving the second KRB-ERROR with a freshness token (not of the first)
but nothing seems to be limiting the number of freshness token handling
cycles. Did I miss that?

The KDC is stateless, so as far as the KDC is concerned there is nothing to=
do about that cycle. It is the responsibility of the client not to retry =
indefinitely.

It's really no different than the behavior already expected of clients with=
respect to KDC_ERR_TIME_SKEW and password. If the client cannot agree wit=
h a KDC on a time then it needs to stop retrying. The conditions to cause =
this are nearly identical as it would require that the client to round-robi=
n different KDCs that have sufficient time skew from each other not to acce=
pt each other's time/freshness token for password/certificate respectively.

If I read the draft correctly, then failure of the client to comply with th=

Hi Paul,

> The KDC is stateless, so as far as the KDC is concerned there is nothing to do about that cycle.

And so it should be. If anything is done to defend against infinite looping clients it should probably take the form of bulk defense against attackish patterns.

> It is the responsibility of the client not to retry indefinitely.

May I suggest that you state that in the text? The current draft is a procedure, and could benefit from invariant statements to clarify the cases that fall outside of the intended procedure.

Thanks,

If I understand correctly, we are worried about an infinite loop of
AS-REQ -> KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_EXPIRED -> AS-REQ -> ... due to the section 2.5.

If we need to alter this text anyway, I don't like the requirement that
"If a client receives a KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_EXPIRED KRB_ERROR message that
includes a freshness token, it MUST retry using the new freshness
token." MUSTs are to be used when behavior "is actually required for
interoperation or to limit behavior which has potential for causing
harm" (RFC 2119 section 6). A client which implements RFC 6113 could
respond to KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_EXPIRED the same way it already does, by
retrying from the beginning, without affecting interoperability or
causing harm.

I suggest the following text:

  If a client receives a KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_EXPIRED KRB_ERROR message that
includes a freshness token, it SHOULD retry the PKINIT-authenticated
AS-REQ using the new freshness token. The client MAY restart the
conversation instead. The client MUST limit the number of retries to
avoid looping forever in case of a misbehaving KDC.

Since the infinite loop problem exists for Kerberos clients already, I woul=
d prefer to not specify something since this is an extension to an extensio=
n.

However, the must is valid. Not sure how we all missed that.=20
"If a client receives a KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_EXPIRED KRB_ERROR message that incl=
udes a freshness token, it SHOULD retry using the new freshness token."

I would really like to get this to last call and get the official IANA numb=
er

If I understand correctly, we are worried about an infinite loop of AS-REQ =
-> KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_EXPIRED -> AS-REQ -> ... due to the section 2.5.

If we need to alter this text anyway, I don't like the requirement that "If=
 a client receives a KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_EXPIRED KRB_ERROR message that include=
s a freshness token, it MUST retry using the new freshness token." MUSTs a=
re to be used when behavior "is actually required for interoperation or to =
limit behavior which has potential for causing harm" (RFC 2119 section 6). =
A client which implements RFC 6113 could respond to KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_EXPIRE=
D the same way it already does, by retrying from the beginning, without aff=
ecting interoperability or causing harm.
