Hi,

Why was "Qualified Learning" moved out of scope of the VPLS Model in the
last revision of the draft-ietf-l2vpn-vpls-ldp?

Were there any issues with inter-operation of Qualified Learning and H-VPLS?

Regards,

Yifat,

I think the same documents are now with l2vpn/l3vpns acronyms
instead of ppvpn. I assume not all drafts have their reference
section updated to reflect the two new working groups change.
Here are some pointers below to the documents asked:

Drafts are only updated by their authors, not by the Internet Drafts
editor. This draft absolutely should list the draft names of all the
"work in progress" drafts in its reference section.

Two problems with that: draft names keep changing, and we're
constantly reminded _not_ to quote draft names. I used to use the
draft names -- I think I will go back to that, perhaps without the

Um, who is doing that constant reminding? That's exactly the opposite
of what others have been saying for many years. If it is an IESG
member, we need to get more consistent advice from the IESG on this.

Correct: don't use version numbers. You aren't referring to a single
instantiation of a draft, which can be replaced at any time. You are
referring to what will be the final item in the series, namely the
eventual RFC.

Paul,

We are constantly reminded by the boiler-plate text on
the first page of every Internet Draft - which says:

"It is inappropriate to use Internet-Drafts as reference
material or to cite them other than as "work in progress."

Right. So the reference section of an Internet Draft would list them
by title and the file name (without the number), and say "work in
progress". This is the typical way it is done in all the WGs with
which I am familiar.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Provisioning Models and Endpoint Identifiers in L2VPN
                          Signaling
	Author(s)	: E. Rosen, V. Radoaca
	Filename	: draft-ietf-l2vpn-signaling-00.txt
	Pages : 22
	Date : 2003-9-5

[PWE3-CONTROL] specifies a 'signaling protocol' which uses extensions
of LDP [RFC 3036] to set up and maintain pseudowires [PWE3-ARCH].
Like any protocol which sets up connections, the signaling protocol
provides a method by which each endpoint can identify the other.
[L2VPN-FW] describes a number of different ways in which sets of
pseudowires may be combined together into 'Provider Provisioned Layer
2 VPNs' (L2 PPVPNs, or L2VPNs), resulting in a number of different
kinds of L2VPN. Different kinds of L2VPN may have different
'provisioning models', i.e., different models for what information
needs to be configured in what entities. Once configured, the
provisioning information is distributed by a 'discovery process', and
once the information is discovered, the signaling protocol is
automatically invoked to set up the required pseudowires. The
semantics of the endpoint identifiers which the signaling protocol
uses for a particular type of L2VPN are determined by the
provisioning model. This document specifies a number of PPVPN
provisioning models, and specifies the semantic structure of the
endpoint identifiers required. It further specifies how the endpoint
identifiers are carried in the 'Generalized Identifier FEC' of
[PWE3-CONTROL]. It is believed that the specified identifiers can
also be carried within the L2TP signaling protocol, though this is
currently not specified.

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Eric and all,
I have some doubt wrt section 5.1.1.2 "Single Sided Provisioning with
Discovery"
of draft-ietf-l2vpn-signaling-00.txt. The text says that each PE distributes
its list of <vpn-id, local-AII>, while each attachment circuit is
providioned with
the <vpn-id, remote-AII> value.

The case that worries me is like following:
- we have 3 PEs (PE-1, PE-2 and PE-3)
- PE-1 has a single attachment circuit locally identified as <V, john> and
configured to expect <V, fred> as its remote peer
  as the remote side)
- both PE-2 and PE-3 have attachment circuits locally identified as <V,
fred>
(looks perfectly legal since "fred" is a LOCAL identification) and
configured to expect <V, john> as their remote peers.

The draft seems to ignore such a case. In particular, it is not clear to
me what prevents a situation when two unidirectional LSPs -
<PE1, <V, john>, PE2, <V, fred>> and <PE3, <V, fred>, PE1, <V, john>> -
are created.

With best regards,

Eric,
Sorry - missed this point.
However, I think that referring to a name that must
be unique in some global (AGI) context as "local"
is misleading (at least, it mis-led me:-).

On the practical side: How can the operator configuring AIIs in a PE
guarantee their uniqueness in the context that is not local to the
specific PE? A simple way to do that would be to include the
PE IP address (or host name) as part of the AII, i.e. the AIIs would
look like john@pe1, fred@pe2, fred@pe3 etc., but this would
make moving the attachment circuit from one PE to another
without reconfiguration of the remote endpoint (the primary
benefit of the single-sided model) somewhat problematic.
A manual check vs the list of all AIIs in the given AGI does not
seem to be a nice solution either.

In addition, the auto-discovery protocol should be probably capable of
discovering duplicated AIIs within a given AGI with the appropriate
consequent actions (at least prevention of establishing PWs + report
of a detected misconfiguration).
But this is probably out of scope of the signaling protocol spec.

With best regards,

When I read this I took it to mean unique on a per PE basis rather than on a
per VPN basis, perhaps the draft should state this?

This leads me onto a question on a similar theme to a question I have posted
on the PWE3 mailing list. What values/names are intended to be used as AI's?
An example given in draft-ietf-pwe3-control-protocol-03.txt is
"ATM3VPI4VCI5". As its possible for two Attachment Circuits on different PEs
(but belonging to the same VPN) to have exactly the same interface/VPI/VCI
values, this is obviously not a good ID to use because it may not be unique
within a VPN. Of course a service provider could put processes in place to
avoid the use of identical IDs within a VPN, e.g. move one of the Attachment
Circuits over to a different VPI/VCI, but this is extra work and mistakes
can happen.

Why not just use the PWid FEC element and use the combination of the PE IP
address and PWid to identify the VPN endpoints? What problem(s) does the
Generalised ID FEC element solve that justifies the extra
configuration/management required in associating an Attachment circuit with
a VPN ID (AGI) AND an endpoint ID (SAII/TAII)?

Thanks,

Richard

Looks like we have both made the same mistake. The draft actually states
that the names are unique within the specific VPN, but still calls the name
"local".

Sasha> On the practical side: How can the operator configuring AIIs in a PE

Any VPWS auto-discovery scheme requires the assignment of ids that are
unique per VPN. One would need a provisioning process that could assign
these, so probably these ids would be integers beginning with 1 and
incrementing for each new system added to the VPN.

Whether the benefit of the auto-discovery exceeds the cost of this
provisioning process is a debatable issue.

The problem with the VPWS is that it is not enough to generate unique
attachment circuit IDs. The provisioning process must also assign a peer
endpoint ID to any attachment circuit, and assignments of the two peers
must match. If this operation is done manually, it is not any better than
assignment of PW IDs. Automated matching schemes are, IMO, somewhat
problematic.
All such schemes I am aware of make some assumptions on the VPWS topology
(full mesh, hub-and-spokes etc.) and become increasingly complicated
as these assumptions change. So I fully agree with your conclusion below:

Sasha,

Do you think the idea proposed in the Section 4 of the following draft would
enable you to assign locally significant values to attachment circuits while
keep them globally unique in signaling exchanges?

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-luo-l2tpext-l2vpn-signaling-02.txt

Please note it is protocol independent.

Just checking to see if there is any work done
towards 'describing MIB for VPLS/VPWS'...I see
it as one of the goals/milestones for the WG.

Juniper seems to have added some support in
their properitary MIB (see more at:
http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/software/junos/junos60/swconfig60-net-mgmt/html/mib-jnx-vpn.txt)

	The PWE3 MIBs will support
VPLS/VPWS in general, but may need a
few knobs and buttons for configuration.
I am going to try to present these details
at the next meeting.

Tissa and all,
I have tried to compare your draft with
draft-heinanen-radius-l2tp-vpls-00.txt.

My first observation is that draft-heinanen support VPLS operation
(subject to some auto-discovery mechanism which is out of scope
of L2TP) without introducing any extensions to the basic L2TP level.
IMO, the approach used in this draft can be used with any auto-discovery
mechanism (direc tory-based, BGP-based etc.) with minimal changes.
(Of course,I can be wrong here:-)

Hence I would like to understand the rationale for far-reaching changes
to L2TP proposed in your draft.

Hi,

Is there a schedule for l2vpn group meetings? I didn't see this WG
appearing in the Agenda.
If there's any preliminary schedule, please share it, as I might not be
able to attend the entire week.

Thanks a lot.

/Moshe
