Hi all,

In the last IETF meeting in March, it was pointed out that
we need to study requirements more for multicast over VPLS.

Let us introduce a new I-D here for this topic,
which incorporated various SPs' input.

Comments are really appreciated.

Regards,
-Yuji Kamite

Subject: I-D ACTION:draft-kamite-l2vpn-vpls-mcast-reqts-00.txt

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

Title : Requirements for Multicast Support in Virtual
                          Private LAN Services
	Author(s)	: Y. Kamite, et al.
	Filename	: draft-kamite-l2vpn-vpls-mcast-reqts-00.txt
	Pages : 26
	Date : 2005-6-27

This document provides functional requirements for network solutions
that support multicast in Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS). It
specifies requirements both from the end user and service provider
standpoints. It is intended that potential solutions will use these
   requirements as guidelines.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-kamite-l2vpn-vpls-mcast-reqts-00.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-kamite-l2vpn-vpls-mcast-reqts-00.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-kamite-l2vpn-vpls-mcast-reqts-00.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

[This message is bcc:ed to all INT area WGs, the IESG and the IAB.]

Hi All,

We have created an Internet Area mailing list -- int-area@ietf.org.
This list will be used to announce Internet area BOFs, to discuss
Internet area WG charter updates and to discuss other issues related
to the Internet Area, as they arise -- such as whether we should hold
an Internet area meeting in Paris.

If you wish to join the list, you can do so at:

https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/int-area

The archives should be available at:

http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/int-area/index.html

(Hopefully this will be the first message in the archive).

If you are interested in issues concerning the overall structure or
scope of the Internet area and/or are interested in influencing how
the Internet area is managed, I hope you will join this list.

Thanks,
Margaret

I'm a bit unclear about Section 4.1, Encapsulation. It references
"Setup and Maintenance using LDP" - which doesn't really contain much info
about encapsulation. Should it instead be "Encapsulation Methods for
Transport of Ethernet Over MPLS Networks"?

Also 4.1 references the P bit in the Control Flag, but this bit is not
defined in Figure 4.

Do we need the P bit at all, or should this be left to the operator to
configure NSP functions? One scenario where manual configuration would be
beneficial is when mixing tagged, untagged and dual-tagged PE interfaces
in the same VPLS.

Per Ole Klemetsrud

Thanks for your careful reading! You found two bugs -- one: the
reference should be draft-ietf-pwe3-ethernet-encap-10.txt.

Two: the P bit was nuked after comments I received, but I forgot to
remove it in this section.

You're right that this functionality is needed; however, the current
thinking (in line with your own thoughts) is that this is a local
decision. For example, at PE1, the packets entering a given VPLS are
dual-tagged, but at PE2, they are single-tagged. So, it doesn't make
sense to signal this.

Thanks again!
Kireeti.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Virtual Private LAN Services over MPLS
	Author(s)	: M. Lasserre, V. Kompella
	Filename	: draft-ietf-l2vpn-vpls-ldp-07.txt
	Pages : 25
	Date : 2005-7-18

This document describes a Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS)
solution using pseudo-wires, a service previously implemented over
other tunneling technologies and known as Transparent LAN Services
(TLS). A VPLS creates an emulated LAN segment for a given set of
users, i.e., it creates a Layer 2 broadcast domain that is fully
capable of learning and forwarding on Ethernet MAC addresses that
is closed to a given set of users. Multiple VPLS services can be
supported from a single PE node.

This document describes the control plane functions of signaling
pseudo-wire labels, extending [PWE3-CTRL]. It is agnostic to
discovery protocols. The data plane functions of forwarding are
also described, focusing, in particular, on the learning of MAC
addresses. The encapsulation of VPLS packets is described by
  [PWE3-ETHERNET].

	Filename	: draft-ietf-l2vpn-oam-req-frmk-03.txt
	Pages : 19
	Date : 2005-7-18

This draft provides framework and requirements for Layer 2 Virtual
Private Networks (L2VPN) Operation, Administration and Maintenance
(OAM). The OAM framework is intended to provide OAM layering across
L2VPN services, Pseudo Wires (PWs) and Public Switched Network (PSN)
tunnels. The requirements are intended to identify OAM requirement
for L2VPN services (i.e. VPLS, VPWS, and IPLS). Furthermore, if
L2VPN services OAM requirements impose specific requirements on PW
OAM and/or PSN OAM, those specific PW and/or PSN OAM requirements
are also identified.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks Working Group of the IETF.

Title : IP-Only LAN Service (IPLS)
	Author(s)	: H. Shah, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-l2vpn-ipls-02.txt
	Pages : 18
	Date : 2005-7-19

A Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) [VPLS] is used to interconnect
systems across a wide-area or metropolitan-area network, making it
appear that they are on a private LAN. The systems which are
interconnected may themselves be LAN switches. If, however, they
are IP hosts or IP routers, certain simplifications to the operation
of the VPLS are possible. We call this simplified type of VPLS an
"IP-only LAN Service" (IPLS). In an IPLS, as in a VPLS, LAN
interfaces are run in promiscuous mode, and frames are forwarded
based on their destination MAC addresses. However, the maintenance
of the MAC forwarding tables is done via signaling, rather than via
the MAC address learning procedures specified in [IEEE 802.1D].
This draft specifies the protocol extensions and procedures for
   support of the IPLS service.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Provisioning Models and Endpoint Identifiers in L2VPN Signaling
	Author(s)	: E. Rosen, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-l2vpn-signaling-04.txt
	Pages : 35
	Date : 2005-7-20

There are a number of different kinds of "Provider Provisioned Layer
2 VPNs" (L2VPNs). The different kinds of L2VPN may have different
"provisioning models", i.e., different models for what information
needs to be configured in what entities. Once configured, the
provisioning information is distributed by a "discovery process".
When the discovery process is complete, a signaling protocol is
automatically invoked. The signaling protocol sets up the mesh of
Pseudowires (PWs) that form the (virtual) backbone of the L2VPN. Any
PW signaling protocol needs to have a method which allows each PW
endpoint to identify the other; thus a PW signaling protocol will
have the notion of an endpoint identifier. The semantics of the
endpoint identifiers which the signaling protocol uses for a
particular type of L2VPN are determined by the provisioning model.
This document specifies a number of L2VPN provisioning models, and
further specifies the semantic structure of the endpoint identifiers
required by each provisioning model. It discusses the way in which
the endpoint identifiers are distributed by the discovery process,
especially when the discovery process is based upon the Border
Gateway Protocol (BGP). It then specifies how the endpoint
identifiers are carried in the two signaling protocols that are used
to set up PWs, the Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) and the Layer 2
   Tunneling Protocol (L2TPv3).

The VPWS service [L2VPN Framework] provides point-to-point
connections between pairs of Customer Edge (CE) devices. It does
so by binding two Attachment Circuits (each connecting a CE device
with a Provider Edge, PE, device) to a pseudo-wire (connecting the
two PEs). In general, the Attachment Circuits must be of the same
technology (e.g., both Ethernet, both ATM), and the pseudo-wire
must carry the frames of that technology. However, if it is known
that the frames' payload consists solely of IP datagrams, it is
possible to provide a point-to-point connection in which the
pseudo-wire connects Attachment Circuits of different technologies.
This requires the PEs to perform a function known as "ARP
Mediation". ARP Mediation refers to the process of resolving Layer
2 addresses when different resolution protocols are used on either

Attachment Circuit. The methods described in this document are
applicable even when the CEs run a routing protocol between them,
as long as the routing protocol runs over IP. In particular, the
applicability of ARP mediation to ISIS is not addressed as IS-IS
PDUs are not sent over IP.

I need about 10 mins for update on ARP-MEDIATION WG item.

As we all know arp-mediation had a final call and the new
version has all the comments addressed. There is still one
pending issue that I would like to address.

thanks,
himanshu

Shane,

I requested for a 8 min. time slot to discuss
draft-sajassi-l2vpn-vpls-bridge-interop-01.txt. Although I submitted
this draft before the cut-off date, it didn't get posted because of
format issues and I had to re-submit it again.

Regards,
Ali
