The IESG has approved the following document:

- 'Provisioning, Autodiscovery, and Signaling in L2VPNs '
   <draft-ietf-l2vpn-signaling-08.txt> as a Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks Working
Group.

The IESG contact persons are Mark Townsley and Jari Arkko.

Technical Summary

There are a number of different kinds of "Provider Provisioned Layer
2 VPNs" (L2VPNs). The different kinds of L2VPN may have different
"provisioning models", i.e., different models for what information
needs to be configured in what entities. Once configured, the
provisioning information is distributed by a "discovery process".
When the discovery process is complete, a signaling protocol is
automatically invoked. The signaling protocol sets up the mesh of
Pseudowires (PWs) that form the (virtual) backbone of the L2VPN. Any
PW signaling protocol needs to have a method which allows each PW
endpoint to identify the other; thus a PW signaling protocol will
have the notion of an endpoint identifier. The semantics of the
endpoint identifiers which the signaling protocol uses for a
particular type of L2VPN are determined by the provisioning model.
This document specifies a number of L2VPN provisioning models, and
further specifies the semantic structure of the endpoint identifiers
required by each provisioning model. It discusses the way in which
the endpoint identifiers are distributed by the discovery process,
especially when the discovery process is based upon the Border
Gateway Protocol (BGP). It then specifies how the endpoint
identifiers are carried in the two signaling protocols that are used
to set up PWs, the Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) and the Layer 2
Tunneling Protocol (L2TPv3).

Working Group Summary

After WG Last Call, Luca Martini had raised an issue with
respect to whether or not there needed to be coordination of AII
Types between the l2vpn-signaling draft and the emergent MS-PW work.
Luca proposed a solution to this dilemma on the L2VPN WG list:
http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/l2vpn/current/msg01121.html

A discussion ensued between Bruce, Luca, Chris Metz, Florin,
Mustapha, Vach & Shane to resolve it. In summary, we have all agreed
that l2vpn-signaling is its own application and its use of Type-1
AII's is sufficient for it. In fact, procedures developed in
l2vpn-signaling already account for PW routing/stitching & signaling
as it relates to D-VPLS, (with Type-1 AII's), but do not give one the
granularity of routing that MS-PW is aiming for. Another key difference
is that l2vpn-signaling is focused on auto-discovery mechanisms for
groups of PW's (e.g.: L2VPN's), whereas MS-PW is focused on both
routing and signaling invidual PW's (not groups of PW's). In fact,
it's not clear that MS-PW will initially be designed to support
routing+signaling of groups of PW's, (which is another thing that
distinguishes it from l2vpn-signaling).

Protocol Quality

The protocol is being implemented by at least two vendors.

RFC Editor Note:

Please add a normative reference for RFC 2119 and a citation to it at the end
of section 1.

Please replace:

3.3.2.1. BGP-based auto-discovery

   A framework for BGP-based auto-discovery for a generic L2VPN service
is described in [I-D.ietf-l3vpn-bgpvpn-auto], section 3.2. In this
section we specify how BGP-based auto-discovery can be used to build
   VPWS instances.

With:

3.3.2.1. BGP-based auto-discovery

In this section we specify how BGP can be used to discover the information
necessary to build VPWS instances.

And replace:

    "A framework for BGP-based auto-discovery for a generic L2VPN service
is described in [I-D.ietf-l3vpn-bgpvpn-auto], section 3.2. In this
section we specify how BGP-based auto-discovery can be used to build
    VPLS instances."

With:

"In this section we specify how BGP can be used to discover the
information necessary to build a VPLS instance."

Also, please remove the bibliographic reference to [I-D.ietf-l3vpn-bgpvpn-auto]
in its entirety.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Virtual Private LAN Services Using LDP
	Author(s)	: M. Lasserre, V. Kompella
	Filename	: draft-ietf-l2vpn-vpls-ldp-09.txt
	Pages : 27
	Date : 2006-6-5

This document describes a Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS)
solution using pseudo-wires, a service previously implemented over
other tunneling technologies and known as Transparent LAN Services
(TLS). A VPLS creates an emulated LAN segment for a given set of
users, i.e., it creates a Layer 2 broadcast domain that is fully
capable of learning and forwarding on Ethernet MAC addresses that
is closed to a given set of users. Multiple VPLS services can be
supported from a single PE node.

This document describes the control plane functions of signaling
pseudo-wire labels using LDP [RFC3036], extending [RFC4447]. It is
agnostic to discovery protocols. The data plane functions of
forwarding are also described, focusing, in particular, on the
learning of MAC addresses. The encapsulation of VPLS packets is
  described by [RFC4448].

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks Working Group of the IETF.

Title : IP-Only LAN Service (IPLS)
	Author(s)	: H. Shah, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-l2vpn-ipls-06.txt
	Pages : 22
	Date : 2006-6-7

A Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) [VPLS] is used to interconnect
systems across a wide-area or metropolitan-area network, making it
appear that they are on a private LAN. The systems which are
interconnected may themselves be LAN switches. If, however, they
are IP hosts or IP routers, certain simplifications to the operation
of the VPLS are possible. We call this simplified type of VPLS an
"IP-only LAN Service" (IPLS). In an IPLS, as in a VPLS, LAN
interfaces are run in promiscuous mode, and frames are forwarded
based on their destination MAC addresses. However, the maintenance
of the MAC forwarding tables is done via signaling, rather than via
the MAC address learning procedures specified in [IEEE 802.1D].
This draft specifies the protocol extensions and procedures for
support of the IPLS service.

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks Working Group of the IETF.

Title : ARP Mediation for IP Interworking of Layer 2 VPN
	Author(s)	: H. Shah, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-l2vpn-arp-mediation-05.txt
	Pages : 20
	Date : 2006-6-7

The VPWS service [L2VPN-FRM] provides point-to-point connections
between pairs of Customer Edge (CE) devices. It does so by binding
two Attachment Circuits (each connecting a CE device with a Provider
Edge, PE, device) to a pseudo-wire (connecting the two PEs). In
general, the Attachment Circuits must be of the same technology
(e.g., both Ethernet, both ATM), and the pseudo-wire must carry the
frames of that technology. However, if it is known that the frames'
payload consists solely of IP datagrams, it is possible to provide a
point-to-point connection in which the pseudo-wire connects
Attachment Circuits of different technologies. This requires the PEs
to perform a function known as "ARP Mediation". ARP Mediation refers
to the process of resolving Layer 2 addresses when different
resolution protocols are used on either Attachment Circuit. The
methods described in this document are applicable even when the CEs
run a routing protocol between them, as long as the routing protocol
runs over IP. In particular, the applicability of ARP mediation to
ISIS is not addressed as IS-IS PDUs are not sent over IP.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Service Requirements for Layer 2 Provider Provisioned Virtual Private Networks
	Author(s)	: W. Augustyn, Y. Serbest
	Filename	: draft-ietf-l2vpn-requirements-07.txt
	Pages : 26
	Date : 2006-6-19

This document provides requirements for Layer 2 Provider Provisioned
Virtual Private Networks (L2VPNs). It first provides taxonomy and
terminology and states generic and general service requirements. It
covers point-to-point VPNs referred to as Virtual Private Wire
Service (VPWS), as well as multipoint-to-multipoint VPNs also known
as Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS). Detailed requirements are
expressed from a customer as well as a service provider perspective.

Title : Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) Using BGP
                          for Auto-discovery and Signaling
	Author(s)	: K. Kompella, Y. Rekhter
	Filename	: draft-ietf-l2vpn-vpls-bgp-07.txt
	Pages : 34
	Date : 2006-6-20

Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS), also known as Transparent LAN
Service, and Virtual Private Switched Network service, is a useful
Service Provider offering. The service offers a Layer 2 Virtual
Private Network (VPN); however, in the case of VPLS, the customers in
the VPN are connected by a multipoint Ethernet Local Area Network
(LAN), in contrast to the usual Layer 2 VPNs, which are point-to-
   point in nature.

This document describes the functions required to offer VPLS, a
mechanism for signaling a VPLS, and rules for forwarding VPLS frames
   across a packet switched network.

In VPLS because the native Ethernet service is transported over PWs and
PSN tunnels, it is important to identify the interaction among these
different layers and identify how the failure in PW or PSN transport
layers can impact VPLS service layer and that is why we have established
this OAM layering model. Also, in the previous discussions, we were
asked to identify the impact of PW and PSN layer failure on VPLS service
layer. If in addition to L2VPN WG, you would like to present this
layering to Ops area, then please make such recommendation. =20

Accept. We will add a sentence or two to indicate that a MEP on a PE
will receive messages from (n-1) other MEPs (on the same or other PEs
for the same ME group).

No, that is not correct. The intention of this section is to describe
different interpretation of VPLS as reflected in some of the drafts and
L2VPN framework document because it is important to first clarify what
VPLS refers to, before identifying what OAM tools needed for it. Section
4.1.1 is the most common definition for VPLS (e.g., as an end-to-end
multipoint Ethernet service over different types of network). However,
section 4.1.2 and section 4.1.3 talks about different definitions of
VPLS - e.g., as a network where it support multiple of service instances
and as a LAN emulation part which only contains full mesh of PWs along
with its forwarders and talks about the fact that OAM for those are
handled differently. So, the intention of this section is to clarify
what we mean by VPLS (which is section 4.1.1) and correspondingly what
OAM tools are needed for it. =20

That is not the case. Please refer to section 11 of vpls-ldp draft.

Great! We will do that.=20

It looks pretty align to us, but we will search for mis-alignment. If
you can point out expilictly what is misaligned, it would help.=20

Our intention here is to satisfy your previous request as to show the
MEPs and MIPs relate to L2VPN framework.=20

Agreed. We will clarify it by adding MIPs to the above sentence: "These
MEPs and MIPs are expected ..."

> Section 4.2.3:
> In which components of the VPLS architecture do you expect=20
> the MEPs and MIPs in (E) to be implemented?
>=20

Agreed. We will clarify this by indicating that the MIPs for (E) would
exist when you have an Ethernet access network (e.g., section 11 of
vpld-ldp draft).

> Section 4.2.4:
> What about VPLS-BGP? What identifiers are used for it, since=20

PW-ids are used in VPLS-BGP but instead they are signaled via BGP and we
don't care about what signaling mechanism is used.=20

By PW-id, it is meant the associated MPLS label.

We must complement you for your keen eyes :-) We will fix it.

The statement ought to be: "In common scenarios, it could simply be a
point-to-point ... Such as Ethernet PHY" and we will change it.

We will change the sentence to "Therefore, it is important that OAM
mechanisms can be applied to different network types some of which
mentioned above"

That's fine, we'll fix it.

Section 1.1 has a clear definition of ME which one can apply to any
types of entity such as service, PW, AC, etc.

>=20

We belive the phrasing is causing some confusion to you and we will
further clarify it as: "The distinction between Figure 8(b)-C, and
8(b)-D is that in (C), MEs have MEPs at CEs and at Pes, and have no
MIPs. While in (D) MEs have MEPs at CEs and at PEs and furthermore, MIPs
may be present in between the MEPs; thereby providing visibility of the
network to the operator."

Agreed. We will modify the text to clarify it: "The advantage of having

Hi Folks,

We've only had 1 request for a timeslot for the l2vpn meeting at IETF
66, from Tom Nadeau on the VPLS/VPWS MIB work. If you have something
to discuss or your request didn't make it to us for some reason,
please send them to us ASAP.

I have a question on the CE auto discovery. If the CE is configured with
static ARP entries,=20

dropping the IP unknown=20

During the discovery phase, the PE router should punt the IP unicast

The IESG has approved the following document:

- 'Virtual Private LAN Services Using LDP '
   <draft-ietf-l2vpn-vpls-ldp-09.txt> as a Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks Working
Group.

The IESG contact persons are Mark Townsley and Jari Arkko.

A URL of this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-l2vpn-vpls-ldp-09.txt

Technical Summary

The service described in this document, the Virtual Private
LAN Service (VPLS), also known as Transparent LAN Service,
offers a variant of a Layer 2 Virtual Private Network (L2VPN).
In the case of VPLS, a multipoint network connects the VPN
customers, in contrast to the more traditional Layer 2 VPNs,
which are point-to-point in nature. This document describes the
functions required to offer VPLS, mechanisms for signaling a
VPLS, and rules for forwarding and learning from VPLS frames
across a packet switched network, how to separate traffic in different
VPN and to de-multiplex traffic at the PE routers. The VPLS-LDP is
agnostic when it comes to discovery of VPLS end-points.

Working Group Summary

The VPLS solutions have been one of the controversies of the
VPN working groups. There have been two sets of solutions and
much arguing on the relative merits of these solutions. An agreement
was reached that it is not really the choice of signaling protocol
that is the major difference between the LDP and BGP based
solutions, but the kind of environment they are targeted for.
VPLS-LDP targets networks (e.g., metro) where BGP is typically
not run or LDP is used for other L2VPNs (e.g., VPWS). On the other
hand, VPLS-BGP targets those networks where L3VPNs using BGP
are also deployed. The VPLS-BGP has been through a number of
reviews, including reviews in the l2vpn working group and the idr
group. The same type of review has been done for vpls-ldp from the
l2vpn and mpls working groups.

Protocol Quality

The protocol is implemented and deployed. A fair number of
vendors have implemented the spec. The number of deployments is
large. We have not had any reviewer standing up and saying that
there is any need for major rework.

Note to RFC Editor

Please add a normative reference to RFC 2119 and cite it in section 1.

Please retitle this document as:

Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) using LDP Signaling

IESG Note

The L2VPN Working Group produced two separate documents,
[RFC-draft-ietf-l2vpn-vpls-ldp] and [RFC-draft-ietf-l2vpn-vpls-bgp], that
perform similar functions using different signaling protocols. Be aware that
each method is commonly referred to as "VPLS" even though they are distinct and
incompatible with one another.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Requirements for Multicast Support in Virtual Private LAN Services
	Author(s)	: Y. Kamite, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-l2vpn-vpls-mcast-reqts-02.txt
	Pages : 28
	Date : 2006-6-26

This document provides functional requirements for network solutions
that support multicast over Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS). It
specifies requirements both from the end user and service provider
standpoints. It is intended that potential solutions will use these
   requirements as guidelines.

The IESG has approved the following document:

- 'Service Requirements for Layer 2 Provider Provisioned Virtual Private
   Networks '
   <draft-ietf-l2vpn-requirements-07.txt> as an Informational RFC

This document is the product of the Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks Working
Group.

The IESG contact persons are Mark Townsley and Jari Arkko.

A URL of this Internet-Draft is:

Technical Summary

This document provides requirements for Layer 2 Provider Provisioned
Virtual Private Networks (L2VPNs). It first provides taxonomy and
terminology and states generic and general service requirements. It
covers point-to-point VPNs referred to as Virtual Private Wire
Service (VPWS), as well as multipoint-to-multipoint VPNs also known
as Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS). Detailed requirements are
expressed from a customer as well as a service provider perspective.

Working Group Summary

There was little controversy in creation of L2VPN requirements.

Protocol Quality

Thomas Narten, when acting as co-chair of the Internet Area, has
reviewed the I-D and provided valuable input to improve the quality
of the document. The document was also reviewed by Mark Townsley.

A significant number of vendors have implemented, and a large
number of SP's have deployed, L2VPN protocols based on
requirements contained within this document.

	Filename	: draft-ietf-l2vpn-arp-mediation-06.txt
	Pages : 20
	Date : 2006-6-26

The VPWS service [L2VPN-FRM] provides point-to-point connections
between pairs of Customer Edge (CE) devices. It does so by
binding two Attachment Circuits (each connecting a CE device
with a Provider Edge, PE, device) to a pseudo-wire (connecting
the two PEs). In general, the Attachment Circuits must be of
the same technology (e.g., both Ethernet, both ATM), and the
pseudo-wire must carry the frames of that technology. However,
if it is known that the frames' payload consists solely of IP
datagrams, it is possible to provide a point-to-point connection
in which the pseudo-wire connects Attachment Circuits of
different technologies. This requires the PEs to perform a
function known as "ARP Mediation". ARP Mediation refers to the
process of resolving Layer 2 addresses when different resolution
protocols are used on either Attachment Circuit. The methods
described in this document are applicable even when the CEs run
a routing protocol between them, as long as the routing protocol
runs over IP. In particular, the applicability of ARP mediation
to ISIS is not addressed as IS-IS PDUs are not sent over IP.
     Conventions used in this document
The key words "MUST", "MUST NOT", "REQUIRED", "SHALL", "SHALL
NOT", "SHOULD", "SHOULD NOT", "RECOMMENDED", "MAY", and
"OPTIONAL" in this document are to be interpreted as described
     in [RFC 2119].

Title : L2VPN OAM Requirements and Framework
	Author(s)	: D. Mohan, A. Sajassi
	Filename	: draft-ietf-l2vpn-oam-req-frmk-06.txt
	Pages : 36
	Date : 2006-6-27

This draft provides framework and requirements for Layer 2 Virtual
Private Networks (L2VPN) Operation, Administration and Maintenance
(OAM). The OAM framework is intended to provide OAM layering across
L2VPN services, Pseudo Wires (PWs) and Packet Switched Network (PSN)
tunnels. The requirements are intended to identify OAM requirement
for L2VPN services (i.e. VPLS, VPWS, and IPLS). Furthermore, if
L2VPN services OAM requirements impose specific requirements on PW
OAM and/or PSN OAM, those specific PW and/or PSN OAM requirements
are also identified.

Dear l2vpn WG,

This is just a quick note for updating this.
We added two new sections, though on the whole it gets fairly stable.

------
Change log:

Setction 5.9.
"Frame reordering prevention" (new section)

Section 5.10.
"Fate-Sharing between unicast and multicast" (new section)

  - Reflected the result of discussion in the last Dallas meeting.
Originally, it was pointed out in connection with the path-congruency topic,
but it was suggested that it should be clarified first in the context of
fate-sharing in the requirement document. So this section shows an optional
requirement taking care of customer's LAN switching application.

Section 6.5.
Some items raised requirement level from SHOULD to MUST.

Editorial changes
------

Thanks,
-Yuji

This document provides functional requirements for network solutions
that support multicast over Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS). It
specifies requirements both from the end user and service provider
standpoints. It is intended that potential solutions will use these
   requirements as guidelines.
