Hi Ali,

I was only pointing out whether the route-target semantics will hold for th=
e "value" 0; i.e. whether it should be allowed. I am copying idr to see if =
it will have any bearing on RT Filtering (RT Constraints functionality).

In any case, the approach you are suggesting about the two level check will=
work, but it makes the RT Constraint feature ineffective, it's a known pro=
blem (mapping from 10 bytes to 6 bytes), we did discuss this offline.

Best,
Satya

This would still work since this is a new RT derived based on MAC. And if s=
omeone configures MAC as 0, then the lower six bytes of this new RT will be=
zero. If you have multiple ESIs, with zero MAC, then the RTs for all these=
ESIs, will be zero which means the ES route messages will not be properly =
filtered by their RTs. However, they will eventually be properly filtered b=
ecause the ESI values for these sites are different.

Cheers,

Hi L2VPN WG,

Due to time constraints during the IETF87 L2VPN session, we skipped the
following item from the agenda.

(14) draft-rabadan-l2vpn-dci-evpn-overlay-00
     Jorge Rabadan
     (5 minutes)

The draft focuses on the DC GW (Data Center Gateway) functions required to
provide intra-subnet connectivity beyond the Data Center boundaries when:
a) EVPN for overlay tunnels is deployed within the DC
AND
b) existing L2VPN solutions are deployed in the WAN. In particular, this
version focuses on VPLS/PBB-VPLS, which is the most common L2VPN WAN
technology nowadays.

Highlights of the draft:
- it addresses the following requirements: flexible DC GW hand-off to the
WAN provider, integrated/separated DC GW and WAN edge PE functions,
multi-homing, control of the MACs advertised to the DC by using the
"unknown mac route"
- Special attention to the use of the unknown-mac-route: EVPN provides
great control over the MACs advertised within the DC, however, when VPLS
is used in the WAN, the DC is exposed to a potential MAC explosion that
might derive in EVPN advertising thousands of MACs to the DC NVEs (Network
Virtualization Edge nodes).
- The use of the unknown-mac-route provides the following benefits:
a) reduces the control plane overhead within the DC and keep the NVE FDB
tables under control
b) allows the DC provider to disable the unknown unicast flooding if MACs
within the DC are learnt in the control/management plane.
c) provides a fast convergence mechanism for hypervisor-based NVEs

Please refer to the draft for more information.

We strongly believe this draft is needed (given the feedback we captured
from DC providers) so we would like to request the WG to read the draft
and provide comments.
Looking forward to your feedback/contributions.
Thank you,

The authors

At the meeting, there was confusion about what to do about MAC-IP mapping a=
dvertisements after a MAC move.
To me section 16 is clear:

In order to allow all of the PEs in the EVPN instance to correctly
determine the current location of the MAC address, all advertisements
of it being reachable via the previous Ethernet segment MUST be
withdrawn by the PEs, for the previous Ethernet segment, that had
   advertised it.

Perhaps, you could add a sentence:

This includes all MAC advertisement routes of the affected MAC address
   that contain an IP address.

The IP-MAC mapping advertisement contains a label and a nexthop, so
it is really also a MAC advertisement at the same time. If that were
to stay around, it would confuse the real location.
The PE at the new location can snoop ARP messages and issue its own
MAC-IP mapping.

Alternatively, IP-MAC mappings could be made into separate messages
decoupled from the MAC location advertisement.

Thanks,
Jakob.

I agree with Jakob's suggestion in the last sentence:

IP-MAC mappings could be made into separate messages decoupled from the MAC=
 location advertisement.

When a host moves from one PE to another, the IP-MAC mapping doesn't change=
. The only change is the MAC attachment to the PE.

Subject: EVPN: IP mappings after MAC move

Thanks,
Jakob.

Abstract:
This memo defines an experimental portion of the Management
Information Base for use with network management protocols in the
Internet community. In particular, it describes managed objects for
modeling of Virtual Private LAN services. It needs to be used in
conjunction with Pseudowire (PW) Management Information Base
   [RFC5601].
