The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'IP-Only LAN Service (IPLS)'
  (draft-ietf-l2vpn-ipls-16.txt) as Historic RFC

This document is the product of the Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks
Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Adrian Farrel and Alia Atlas.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
http://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-l2vpn-ipls/

Technical Summary:

A Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) is used to interconnect
systems across a wide-area or metropolitan-area network, making it
appear that they are on a private LAN. The systems which are
interconnected may themselves be LAN switches. If, however, they
are IP hosts or IP routers, certain simplifications to the operation
of the VPLS are possible. We call this simplified type of VPLS an
"IP-only LAN Service" (IPLS). In an IPLS, as in a VPLS, LAN
interfaces are run in promiscuous mode, and frames are forwarded
based on their destination MAC addresses. However, the maintenance
of the MAC forwarding tables is done via signaling, rather than via
the MAC address learning procedures specified in [IEEE 802.1D].
This draft specifies the protocol extensions and procedures for
   support of the IPLS service.

The original intent was to provide an alternate solution to VPLS
for those PE routers that were not capable of learning MAC address
through data plane. This became a non-issue with newer hardware.
The concepts put forth by this draft are still valuable and are
adopted in one form or other by newer work such as Ethernet VPN
in L2VPN Working Group and possible data center applications. At
this point, no further action is planned to update this document
and is published simply as a historic record of the ideas.

Working Group Summary:

This document is an L2VPN Working Group document, and has been reviewed in
the working group through multiple iterations of the draft. It was considered to be an
informational draft, with the last few iterations of the draft now cleaning up references.
There was considerable debate during and after the WG last call which resulted in
new revisions being issued to resolve various comments.

After discussion with the serving AD, the document was changed to be Historic. Thus
it presents a record of the working group discussions. The revised I-D was also
shown to the WG to check for any concerns.

Document Quality:

The document provides a clear and concise set of requirements for IPLS - broken
down into different requirement areas. As a requirements draft there is no protocol
    implement.

Himanshu,

Congrats! It only took 13 years for it to become a RFC :-) Look at the
bright side of it - it happened while you are still alive :-)

Cheers,
Ali

Thanks Giles. I guess I need to publish it as
draft-ietf-bess-evpn-overlay-00.txt. BTW, what should we do with the
following EVPN drafts that went through the WG calls:

http://www.ietf.org/id/draft-sajassi-l2vpn-evpn-inter-subnet-forwarding-05.
txt
http://www.ietf.org/id/draft-boutros-l2vpn-evpn-vpws-04.txt
http://tools.ietf.org/id/draft-rp-l2vpn-evpn-usage-02.txt

Do we need to reinitiate the call in the BESS or are we OK with the
received responses? Do you need to discuss it with the BESS chairs first?

Regards,
Ali

Hi Ali,

I'll leave it to Nabil to comment on the other 3 as he was handling the =
adoption calls. I'd assume they'd be published in BESS also.

As I mentioned in my earlier email we'll discuss the process for that =
with the BESS chairs.

Subject: PALS WG on its way ....

If you haven't been following Adrian's recent emails, the expectation is th=
at PALS will be officially formed as a new WG in two weeks, and will meet i=
n Honolulu in the agenda spot currently reserved for L2VPN, Wednesday at 13=
:00. Our WG Secretary, David Sinicrope, will be issuing a call for agenda i=
tems. For those of you that were planning to present at PWE3, you'll be pre=
senting at PALS instead. For those of you that were planning to present at =
L2VPN, you may be presenting at PALS or at BESS, the latter primarily for E=
VPN-related drafts. Let Stewart or me know if you have any questions.

We would also like to start using the PALS WG email list going forward. My =
understanding is that if you were on the PWE3 list, you've been auto-subscr=
ibed to the PALS list. If you were on the L2VPN list but not on the PWE3 li=
st, you have to sign up for the PALS list on your own. The relevant informa=
tion for the list is:

Hi All,
I=92m still waiting on the tools to catch up with the new WG to post the ag=
enda on the meeting materials web pages.

In the meantime, below is the draft PALS agenda for Honolulu.
If you requested a slot and I haven=92t allocated one, my apologies, please=
complete the form below and send it in reply to this email.
If you haven=92t requested a slot and need one, please complete the form be=
low and send it in reply to this email no later than 31 October 2014 12:00 =
EDT.
*** Taking a couple of minutes to complete the form helps me complete the a=
genda quickly and accurately.

Those that have slots allocated, please send me your slides no later than M=
onday 10 Nov 2014 17:00 Honolulu time.
If I don=92t have your slides by that time, you risk losing your slot.
Thanks!
Dave

Hi,
For the record, this call had closed on October 20. The draft has good supp=
ort, has no objections, and it came about in the l2vpn working group to pro=
vide a guide on using the different evpn capabilities. Based on this, this =
draft is adopted as a WG group draft and will progress in BESS. The authors=
are to issue this draft as BESS working group draft, and will coordinate t=
hat with the BESS chairs.

Apologies for the delay in the announcement as we are waiting the forming o=
f the new groups.

Thanks,
Nabil

Giles,

Thank you for the information. I could not attend the 91st IETF meeting bec=
ause of the visa processing delay, thus I had no idea what is the exact nex=
t step for this document.
I do find draft-l2vpn-vpls-pe-etree has been listed in the milestone of PAL=
S WG, that's the reason I asked the question.

Now we find some editorial updates are needed for this document, not sure w=
hether we should revise it now or wait for the end of LC to upload a new ve=
rsion.

Best regards,
Yuanlong

I normally recommend waiting to the end of LC before making any
changes to the text. That way everyone is talking about the same text.

The following errata report has been verified for RFC4762,
"Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) Using Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) Signaling".

--------------------------------------
You may review the report below and at:
http://www.rfc-editor.org/errata_search.php?rfc=4762&eid=4144

--------------------------------------
Status: Verified
Type: Editorial

Reported by: Alexander ("Sasha") Vainshtein <Alexander.Vainshtein@ecitele.com>
Date Reported: 2014-10-23
Verified by: Adrian Farrel (IESG)

Section: Appendix A

Original Text
-------------
In a VPLS, we use a VCID (which, when using the PWid FEC, has been
substituted with a more general identifier (AGI), to address
extending the scope of a VPLS) to identify an emulated LAN segment.
Note that the VCID as specified in [RFC4447] is a service identifier,
identifying a service emulating a point-to-point virtual circuit. In
a VPLS, the VCID is a single service identifier, so it has global
significance across all PEs involved in the VPLS instance.

Corrected Text
--------------
In a VPLS, we use a PWID (which, when using the Generalized PW ID
FEC, has been substituted with a more general identifier (AGI),
   to address
extending the scope of a VPLS) to identify an emulated LAN segment.
Note that the PWID as specified in [RFC4447] is a service identifier,
identifying a service emulating a point-to-point virtual circuit. In
a VPLS, the PWID is a single service identifier, so it has global
significance across all PEs involved in the VPLS instance.

Notes
-----
1. The problematic text follows a diagram depicting the PWID FEC (a.k.a. FEC-128) as it appears in RFC 4447. This diagram includes a 32-bit PWID field, but there is no VCID field. Nor is VCID mentioned anywhere in RFC 4447 - it has been used in the original Martini drafts but has then been replaced by PWID.

2. According to RFC 4447, AGI is used only in the Generalized PW ID FEC (a.k.a. FEC-129) but not in the PWID FEC (a.k.a. FEC-128).

Corrected Text
--------------
N/A - this is hardly the right place to define missing MIB objects

Notes
-----
As per RFC 4762 (which defines at least one of the two VPLS types for which this RFC defines Management Information Base), Virtual Switching Instance (VSI)(a local representation of a given VPLS instance within a given PE) is connected to CE devices via Attachment Circuits (AC). Hence I would expect that Management Information Base for VPLS would provide for some representation of ACs that perform this function for a given VSI.

However, this RFC does not even mention attachment circuits in any way.

I have tried to raise this issue with the WG and the authors. One of the authors has replied (see http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/l2vpn/current/msg04539.html) that "ACs are attached to the VPLS instances and are represented as IfMIB entries". However, neither Interfaces MIB nor any of its key elements (e.g., ifIndex) are mentioned in this RFC.
 --VERIFIER NOTES--
The errata system isn't to be used for recording future work or major defects in RFCs. These need to be taken to the relevant mailing lists (in this case pals@ietf.org) and progressed with Internet-Drafts.

This concern could probably be addressed through a new MIB module that augments the on in RFC 7257.

Rohit,=0A=
Lots of thanks for your response.=0A=
=0A=
Unfortunately I cannot say it addresses my concerns.=0A=
=0A=
The erratum I've submitted has been about missing definition of VPLS Attach=
ment Circuits as defined in RFC 4665; this definition equally applies both =
for VPLS implementing RFC 4762 and for those implementing RFC 4761.=0A=
RFC 4762 clarifies that "the attachment circuit (AC) connected to the cust=
omer could be a physical Ethernet port, a logical (tagged) Ethernet port=
, an ATM PVC carrying Ethernet frames, etc., or even an Ethernet PW". The l=
ast case in this list is out of scope of my erratum, but all the rest are. =
=0A=
=0A=
>From my POV the VPLS MIB should support the following minimal set of operat=
ions for a VPLS AC:=0A=
=0A=
- List a given attachment circuits belonging to a given VPLS instance (read=
-only)=0A=
- Add a new attachment circuit to a given VPLS instance, preferably without=
disrupting forwarding via already existing ACs or PWs attached to this VPL=
S instance (read-write). This basic operation should be as simple as possib=
le=0A=
- Remove an attachment circuit from a VPLS instance, preferably without dis=
rupting forwarding via already existing ACs or PWs attached to this VPLS in=
stance (read-write).=0A=
=0A=
Coming back to RFC 7257, my reading did not find any explicit mention of at=
tachment circuits (easy to check!).=0A=
This, by and of itself, looks problematic to me.=0A=
=0A=
Implicit reference to attachment circuits via the PW MIBs is also problemat=
ic because:=0A=
- RFC 5061 only mentions attachment circuits in the following context: "Whe=
n the PW is managed as an ifIndex, by default it SHOULD NOT be stacked, i.e=
., this ifIndex SHOULD NOT be layered above the respective PSN tunnel ifInd=
ex or the attachment circuit ifIndex or the interface carrying the attachme=
nt circuit." =0A=
- RFC 5062 does not mention attachment circuits at all=0A=
- RFC 5603 (Ethernet PW MIB) allows association of one or more pairs {Ether=
net Port, VLAN} with a given Ethernet PW instance with the Ethernet port b=
eing represented by its ifIndex (pwEnetPortIfIndex). However, it explicitly=
states in description of pwEnetPortIfIndex that "This object is used to s=
pecify the ifIndex of the Ethernet port associated with this PW for point-t=
o-point Ethernet service, or the ifIndex of the virtual interface of the VP=
LS instance associated with the PW if the service is VPLS". From my POV th=
is means that Ethernet PWs associated with a VPLS instance cannot refer via=
this attribute to any Ethernet ports.=0A=
=0A=
Last, but not least, I'd like to mention Tom's response to my question on t=
he mailing list (referenced and quoted in the original Erratum). To the bes=
t of my understanding it does not match your response.=0A=
=0A=
I agree with the Adrian that errata are not intended for fixing major gaps =
in already approved and published RFCs.=0A=
=0A=
I will consider posting a draft (7257bis) fixing this problem, and I would =
be glad to work together with you and/or the rest of the authors of the ori=
ginal 7257 in this.=0A=
=0A=
Regards,=0A=
Sasha =0A=

Hi Alexander,=0A=
The mapping is done through the PW-MIB. The pwIndex is an index into vpls=
PwBindEntry of the VPLS-MIB.=0A=
