I totally agreee with this.
This workinggroup will not make a complete remake of VLV. Anyone wanting
to do so should seriously consider forming a new working group.
If there is not consensus within this group to continue with the VLV draft
with only minor modifications, I would propose that the group drops it and
let the authors publish it as an individual contribution.

Please bear in mind that this group is no more, it's just formally around
since all its drafts aren't through to RFC status yet.

This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your ietf.org mailing
list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how to use
it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, ldapext-request@ietf.org) containing just the
word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent to
you with instructions.

If you have questions, problems, comments, etc, send them to
mailman-owner@. Thanks!

This isn't about a NEW feature. It's about scrolling

Highly unstable content isn't within the scope of this
protocol. Directories typically don't have highly unstable
content.

Strangely, the existing protocol has been 'working' for
many folks for many years. AFAIK in the IETF culture,
working interoperable implementations are considered
something of an advantage vs theoretical complaints.

Kurt: do you have a counterexample ? e.g. something
you tried to implement with the current protocol but failed
to get to work ? Tell us about it.

Note that I did not say "highly unstable". I said "unstable".
That is, one entry add/modification/delete is sufficient
to cause this protocol to fail.

But directories typically do change. And any change is
sufficient to cause failure in this protocol.

Based upon my operational experience with implementing similar
controls, it is obvious to me that the current protocol fails
where contain is not stable. In particular, were DIT
modification causes the positioning of entries in the list to
shift.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

Title : LDAP (Alternative) Virtual List View Operation
	Author(s)	: K. Zeilenga
	Filename	: draft-zeilenga-ldapext-vlv-00.txt
	Pages : 18
	Date : 2002-10-2

This document describes an LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access
Protocol) Virtual List View (VLV) operation. The operation allows the
client to obtain portion (the view) of an ordered set (the list) of
entries visible through a virtual window. The client can reissue the
operation with different criteria to obtain a different view of the
list. Clients may use this operation to page, scroll, or browse
directory content.
The VLV operation is defined as a set of LDAP controls which extend
the Search operation. The VLV controls may be used in conjunction
with a number of other search controls, such as the Server Side
Sorting of Search Results (RFC 2891) control.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-zeilenga-ldapext-vlv-00.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-zeilenga-ldapext-vlv-00.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-zeilenga-ldapext-vlv-00.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

In my opinion, a very important and useful feature of the IETF process
is that the authors of a document retain considerable control over the
direction and scope of the work. Publishing an alternative to VLV as
Kurt has done is one way to sidestep that constraint... but I do not
think it is a good approach.

The IETF has a long standing tradition of carefully balancing features,
time-to-market, ease of implementation, and interoperability. I believe
that Kurt's new I-D suffers has too many features, is at least 2 years
late to market, will be difficult to implement in an effective and
efficient manner on the server side, and therefore the likelihood that a
large number of interoperable implementations will be created is very low.

I feel strongly that draft-ietf-ldapext-ldapv3-vlv-08.txt should be
published as a Proposed Standard (with minor changes if WG consensus
dictates that they are needed). Of course I will leave it to the LDAPEXT
WG chairs to judge consensus on this issue and provide the group with
direction.

As discussed recently on this list, draft-ietf-ldapext-ldapv3-vlv
scroll up/down mechanism does not work when directory content
changes. One entry add/delete/modify is sufficient to cause problems.
The authors have confirmed that draft-ietf-ldapext-ldapv3-vlv scrolling
mechanism was designed to work with static directory content.

I believe this to be a serious flaw in the design of this extension.
Standard track LDAP extensions should be designed to handle dynamic
directory content.

I have authored an alternative to demonstrate a scrolling and browsing
approach designed to handle dynamic directory content.

In moving forward, I would like to see draft-ietf-ldapext-ldapv3-vlv
be modified to address dynamic directory content. I see two ways
it could address dynamic directory content.
 1) redesign as necessary to handle dynamic directory content or
 2) clearly state that the extension is only applicable when
    the directory content is stable.

In case 1), I hope my I-D will be of some use to the authors.
In case 2), I suggest the authors don't pursue the work further
on the Standard Track.

VLV was reviewed by the working group and IESG and was submitted to the RFC
editor 2 years ago, however a problem with the result codes reference meant
that it was not published. I would like to see the VLV draft resolve any
problems that have been found and be completed so that it can be published
as an RFC.

I agree. Let's resolve the problems with the VLV draft.

Help me understand the stability problem further. If the cookie
mechanism is used, a server knows the last view that the client has. If
a client asks for a new view (by offset) that overlaps or adjoins the
last view, the server should be able to provide contiguous results--even
when updates are happening.

In particular, were DIT
modification causes the positioning of entries in the list to
shift.

First, note that the present cookie is optionally provided by
the server and optionally returned by the server. It's purpose
has been described to allow the server to make optimize processing
of related requests. It, however, hasn't been described as a
mechanism which the protocol relies on to address content
instability.

If servers were REQUIRED to provide a cookie and clients
were REQUIRED used the cookie in subsequent related requests, then
the cookie could be used to address the stability problem.

I would refer to this as a "state-full" approach.

However, the authors have stated that VLV could be implemented
in a "state-less" fashion. No cookies.

Either VLV is
stateful - some state is needed.
stateless - no state is needed.

Which is it?

Perhaps it should be published with a cautionary paragraph reflecting Kurt's findings ?

The original purpose of the cookie was to provide a way for a server to
associate a list with a client/connection. The problem was that a client
could be maintaining two VLV lists on the same connection, using the
same search criteria. In order for the server to perform certain
operations (like consistent page up/down) it was neccessary to add the
cookie so that the client's views could be known to the server. Novell
is the one that requested it, and it wasn't to solve any performance
issues.

The reason it was added as an optional component was to not cause
backward compatability problems with implementations that existed before
its introduction.

This should all be captured in the archives.

If servers were REQUIRED to provide a cookie and clients

the cookie could be used to address the stability problem.

I would refer to this as a "state-full" approach.

However, the authors have stated that VLV could be implemented
in a "state-less" fashion. No cookies.

Either VLV is

stateless - no state is needed.

I suggest we add more information on the intent of the contextID
(cookie) and state that servers choosing to not use it may run into
instability problems.

I guess I saw it as a performance issue in that the Novell server
could serve non-cookied requests, it would just be slow to do so.

nope, it was to do with multiple concurrent duplicate VLVs from a single
client on the same connection. I tried poking around the archives so I
could quote myself, but there are a bunch of zero-byte archives that I
fear hold the messages.

I have a pretty clear memory of the discussion.
My memory says that it was related to the Novell
server implementing only approximate indexing into the lists.
Without the cookie, the database engine would need to
create a new cursor (or whatever equivalent thing it uses)
for every request. With the cookie it keeps cursors live
for each client context.

The Netscape/Sun servers are able to serve multiple
concurrent clients without the cookie (because they maintain
an exact index into the list---all state to serve the request
unambiguously is carried in the request without needing
the context carried over from operation to operation).

Perhaps I've been smoking something in the meantime...

Then the document should be clarified that the cookie is
used to maintain state between related operations and that
in the absence of a cookie, the server is to assume the
operation is for an unrelated list.

Note, even if the server only supported one list at a time, the
request needs to state whether it is related to previous VLV
operations or is unrelated.

Okay, but this isn't what the I-D says nor what the author has said
on this list in <003b01c265a6$eadb43d0$220aa8c0@mtbrook.boreham.org>.

Cookies are optional because they're a performance optimization
required only by a subset of implementations.

>The reason it was added as an optional component was to not cause

If a server doesn't return a cookie, what is the client to
make of this? Is it to assume that the server only supports
one VLV list? Is it to assume that each subsequent requests
will be treated as related? or treated as unrelated?

>This should all be captured in the archives.

It needs to be captured in the I-D.

Yes, the cookie/cursor association is how we maintain state, and can
therefore perform page up/down sucessfully.

I agree (unless the server implementation is to work against a more
static list).

It was added a long time ago. We should have added the intent into the
doc (we probably left it out in order to leave its use unlimited).

Since some implementations use more static (pre-canned) result sets,
the client can't really assume anything. Even if we required the cookie,
we can't cause all implementations to use it to ensure continuity or
quality. I think it's sufficient to have the mechanism available, state
its intended use, and allow clients to assume that all servers will
return contiguous results, regardless of how they achieve that.

I agree. This is an easy fix.

The client may or may not run into a stability problem, depending on the
server implementation. I believe iPlanet implements VLVs by using a
pre-canned result set (at least that's one implementation). With that
model, it can better ensure consistency without using state
information.

I don't know how they handle changes to the canned result set, or
changes to the users access control.

It doesn't do this. It maintains an always-correct list of the results
for any VLV searches specified in advance (indexed). Otherwise it computes
the result set by brute force for each operation, or punts saying the
request is too hard to resolve.

It is possible for the client to miss entries or jump into
some unfamiliar part of the list, if the list is highly dynamic
concurrent with the client paging. I'm not convinced that it
is possible (or even desirable) to try to invent a browsing
mechanism which handles highly dynamic content, even with a
context cookie.

Does anyone have an application which needs this ?
I've seen countless VLV applications developed and
deployed and have never had this come up as a problem.

We're talking address book lists here folks. If you want
to do a scroll view onto a dynamic SQL result set, cool,
but is this the place to be defining the protocol for that application ?

I don't see how they could possibly pre-can dynamic content.
I see how they might pre-can static content.

If no cookie is not returned, should the client assume the
content is static?

Given what David just said in his latest reply, if I were a client, I
would tend to assume that if the contextID is missing, the list _may_
become incosistent. But that neither insures that the list will become
inconsistent, nor that lists produced by servers returning a contextID
will remain consistent (in otherwords, implementations can be as clever
or sloppy as they want to be).

I think it's appropriate for the statement that discusses the intent of
the contextID to warn that servers not returning a contextID may produce
inconsistent results when paging. Is this what you're driving at?

Jim.

Discussion point: what if the complete list were to change between
two VLV requests from a client ? How does a cookie help us to
render something unconfusing to the client ?

If, as I hope, it's clear that this is a hopeless exercise, then
let's think about a continuum of progressively less and less
major change to the list between consecutive requests...

Where on this continuum would we decide that there was
sufficiently little change to make it possible to use cookies
or whatever other protocol devices to ensure that the user
isn't 'confused' by the list change ?

If every entry in the client's current view has vanished, you would just
attempt a re-position based on their current requested offset. They
would end up in a place that may or may not be confusing.

In my mind, for this particular issue, there doesn't need to be any
change to the VLV protocol. Only clarifications and further notes to
implementers.

Indeed.

My point was that there is no general solution to the
dynamic list content problem, only various suggestions
to make it not so bad, in the abstract, with no cited
application where the problem has proven to arise in the
first place.

I believe there are at least two general solutions to this
problem.
  1) a cookie (stateful) approach which can be used to position the

Both solutions, where continuity cannot be provided, can detect

I disagree. Both of the above approaches not only handle
minor list changes but deal with some major list changes...
and, where they cannot deal with changes, they can detect
that they cannot and return an error. This is significantly
better ignoring the problem.

(Based upon your description of the Sun/Netscape server)
Take your address book client, select a view against the
Sun/Netscape server, add one entry from the list before
the target, then page down. The provided view will skip
over one entry. That's a problem, it's real.

In my limited world, this is _not_ a practical problem.

So...an entry which was just added to the directory
happens to not show up when a user pages down, where
it will if they subsequently page up again, or re-position.
The entry wasn't there a few seconds ago anyway, so
where's the problem here ?

I will repeat: many years of practical deployment experience
has shown me that this is not a real problem.

I can imagine that this is a serious problem in an administration
application where the application user (e.g. a directory manager) expects to
see the entries he added a few seconds ago in another window continously
showing the list view.

Ciao, Michael.

Kurt,

If I understand correctly, your view is that the control ought to
guarantee continuity when a cookie is being exchanged. If continuity is
lost, the server returns an error, and the client can re-request with a
null cookie.

Is that accurate? If so, I think this could be done with relatively few
changes to the draft. I'm not sure how many of the current
implementations will adopt the behavior. Given that most of them don't
use the cookie today, I guess they'd still be acting in accordance with
the draft.

Maybe so. But we need to design standard track protocols
such that they work well on the Internet for a wide
range of applications. Maybe for your users and their
applications, this is not a problem. However, I can see
that for other applications this would be a major problem.

Now, its don't necessary don't have to expand the
applicability of a protocol, but authors do need to make
sure that the known limitations your protocol are clearly
stated.

>So...an entry which was just added to the directory

It actually far more likely to skip over existing entries.

When they subsequently page up, maybe one entry before the
target is deleted, so the entry is skipped again.

>The entry wasn't there a few seconds ago anyway, so
>where's the problem here ?

I scroll down, the entry I'm looking for isn't in the view.
I scroll up, the entry I'm looking for isn't in the view.
I naturally assume the entry isn't in list when in fact
the entry has been in and continues to be in the list.
Problem? well, that depends on what action I take (or
don't take) based upon the entry not appearing on the list.

Basically, I think the I-D needs to:
 a) state what "continuity" means,
 b) state that intent of the cookie is to provide state to ensure continuity,
 c) state continuity requirements,
 d) state when a VLV operation with no cookie may
be processed independently of other VLV operations and, hence,
    no continuity is ensured.

Sorry, this should read:
Now, it's not necessary to expand the applicability

All,

We have updated the draft
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-bergeson-uddi-ldap-schema-01.txt
based on a round of initial reviews and we want to progress it to RFC
status. Before requesting the Area Director to initiate a last call, we
wanted to see if anyone has any further feedback.

We'll approach the AD in a week if there seems to be no issues.

Can you say what relation this work has to the UDDI standardization work
going on in the OASIS uddi-spec committee?

The appropriate RFC reference to LDAPv3 as a whole is now RFC 3377.

When a user account in a directory has expirationdate attribute,
a today's ldap application needs to write a code to check the user's
expirationdate against the system's today's date
to validate if the account is valid.

If a dynamic attribute such as todaysdate is defined as a part of ldap schema and
the value of the attribute is the ldap server system's date, the
application may simply configure a ldap filter something like
    (&(ou=useraccount)(todaysdate()<expirationdate)

Dynamic attributes can be quite useful, which requires such attributes and
search filter using dynamic attributes to be defined.

I wonder if work on dynamic attributes is within ldapext scope.

Any thoughts?

But if my application is running at 2002101023412Z wouldn't it just send
(&(ou=useraccount)(expirationDate>=2002101023412Z) ? This wouldn't need
a todays date or other LDAP schema extension.

There was an earlier draft on dynamic attributes which were attributes
that would time out and disappear if not refreshed. This draft document
itself timed out and disappeared though you might be able to find it
from the informal expired I-D archives. What you describe sounds also like
the capability which some LDAP implementations provide, which I call virtual

LDAPEXT the working group has shut down already. You can discuss it on this
mailing list but there is no working group 'scope' for dynamic attributes
any more.

I note that even if one had an operational 'todaysdate' attribute
in every entry, there is no standard mechanism for compare values
of one attribute to another attribute. An extension of some sort
would be needed, like an extensible matching rule allowing
assertions like:
        (expirationDate:=valuesGreaterThanOrEqualTo:=todaysdate)

(where expirationDate and todaysdate are attribute types).

I note as well that the LDAP provides "collective" attributes
(RFC 2252/X.501) which appear to be similar in concept to
"virtual" attributes (as provided by some LDAP implementations).
As there are big gaps between RFC 2252 and X.501, I authored
draft-zeilenga-ldap-collective.
