This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your ietf.org mailing
list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how to use
it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, ldapext-request@ietf.org) containing just the
word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent to
you with instructions.

This condition is indicated by the server returning the special value contentCount + 1 in the target position field

I don't know. We should probably set the min to 1.

Should error, I'll add language.

Not unless the size limit is exceeded. If sizelimit = 50, offset = 1, beforeCount = 100, afterCount = 10, you will get back 11 entries.

but what does (Ci = 0, Cc != 0) indicate?

It may be appropriate to eliminate Ci = 0 as valid. That is,
change byoffset to:
    byoffset            [0] SEQUENCE {
        offset INTEGER (1 .. maxInt),
        contentCount INTEGER (0 .. maxInt) },

I'm revising the draft to capture what I believe consensus currently is. What I have not done yet is to address this issue, and some of the error handling issues. The latter should be trivial, but the former will require a quite a number of edits and I need to gauge consensus before proceeding.

So...

I don't mind rewording the draft such that SSS is optional but recommended. The current incarnation of typedown will not work if SSS is not provided, but I think we can just make that statement. We would also add that some server implementations don't support VLV in the absence of SSS, and they will make use of the sortControlMissing virtualListViewResult value.

Is there a strong opposition in going this route?

In the meantime, I will publish what's been done so far.

Jim

>>> "Kurt D. Zeilenga" <Kurt@OpenLDAP.org> 09/25/02 11:58AM >>>
I believe that VLV should be designed such that a client need
not request sorting of entries.

Just as one can page through unsorted results using Simple Page
control [RFC2696], one should be able to VLV through unsorted results.
All that is necessary is for the server to provide some repeatable
ordering of the entries involved. In many servers, the server maintains
all entries in this fashion. In other servers, the server may need
to maintain the order in some context specific way. The contextID
feature allows for this. And, in servers which only care to support
VLV where a sort control has been provided, the server can return
an appropriate error (which has been defined in the I-D).

I suggest VLV only RECOMMEND implementation of RFC 2891 and
that VLV not require the sort control be provided.

With this change, the VLV operation would provide all the
functionality of the Simple Page control. This would allow
the RFC 2696 (Informational) to be obsoleted in favor of
a Standard Track approach. Otherwise, it will likely be
necessary to revise RFC 2696 for publication on the Standard
Track.

Kurt

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

Title : LDAPv3: Requesting Attributes by Object Class
	Author(s)	: K. Zeilenga
	Filename	: draft-zeilenga-ldap-adlist-03.txt
	Pages : 5
	Date : 2002-11-4

The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) search operation
provides mechanisms for clients to request all user application
attributes, all operational attributes, or attributes selected by
their description. This document extends LDAP to provide a mechanism
for LDAP clients to request the return of all attributes of an object
class.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-zeilenga-ldap-adlist-03.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-zeilenga-ldap-adlist-03.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-zeilenga-ldap-adlist-03.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

It is often desirable to to be able to indicate the natural language

directory for values which fulfill the user's language needs. This

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the LDAP Extension Working Group of the IETF.

Title : LDAP Extensions for Scrolling View Browsing of Search
                          Result
	Author(s)	: D. Boreham, J. Sermersheim, A. Kashi
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ldapext-ldapv3-vlv-09.txt
	Pages : 13
	Date : 2002-11-5

This document describes a Virtual List View extension for the
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) Search operation. This
extension is designed to allow the 'virtual list box' feature, common
in existing commercial e-mail address book applications, to be
supported efficiently by LDAP servers. LDAP servers' inability to
support this client feature is a significant impediment to LDAP
replacing proprietary protocols in commercial e-mail systems.
The extension allows a client to specify that the server return, for
a given LDAP search with associated sort keys, a contiguous subset of
the search result set. This subset is specified in terms of offsets
into the ordered list, or in terms of a greater than or equal
comparison value.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ldapext-ldapv3-vlv-09.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ldapext-ldapv3-vlv-09.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ldapext-ldapv3-vlv-09.txt".

It's come to my attention that three paragraphs got mangled
in this revision. The remainder of the document are as
intended. As only background information was affected,
please continue to review and comment on the I-D, but
with changes noted below.

The first paragraph of Section 1.1 should read:
Section 2 of BCP 47 [RFC3066] describes the language tag format
which is used in LDAP. Briefly, it is a string of ASCII letters
and hyphens. Examples include "fr", "en-US" and "ja-JP". Language
tags are case insensitive. For example, the language tag "en-us"
  is the same as "EN-US".

The second paragraph of Section 1.2 should read:
A language range matches a language tag if it is exactly equal to
the tag, or if it is exactly equal to a prefix of the tag such that
the first character following the prefix is "-". The special tag
  "*" matches all tags.

The third paragraph of Section 1.3 should read:
An attribute with one or more tagging options is a direct subtype
of each attribute of the same with all but one of the tagging
options. If the attribute's type is a direct subtype of some other
type, then the attribute is also a direct subtype of the attribute
whose description consists of the supertype and all of the
tagging options. That is, "CN;x-bar;x-foo" is a direct subtype
  of "CN;x-bar", "CN;x-foo", and "name;x-bar;x-foo". Note that
"CN" is a subtype of "name".

"*" does not match <opt-char> in RFC2251 section 4.1.5 (Attribute
Description):
   <opt-char> ::=  ASCII-equivalent letters, numbers and hyphen

Also, if "*" matches all tags and not just all language tags, that
belongs in an RFC about tags in general (i.e. with a more general title
than language tags).

If you just meant to match all language tags, "lang-" is enough.

Hallvard,

I think you are taking this paragraph out of context. The
paragraph is providing an overview of language ranges as
described in BCP 47. Please reread all of Section 1.2
with the second paragraph replaced as indicated.

Though I suggest you add to the paragraph:

", but is written as "lang-" in LDAP."

Hi,

I'm trying to find some information on current efforts to specify standards
for access control for LDAP directories. I see access control is an area
being worked on but cannot find any information. Can you point me to some
information?

There was some work going on in the LDUP groups related to replication.
The last draft I could find was 08 and it has expired.

You might check into the SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) at
oasis-open.org. LDAP vendors seem to be gravitating to DSML and SAML.

There is only one individual draft submission from Steven Legg on
use of X.500 acl. Other than that, no work is beeing done (to my
knowledge).

Shari,

I'm sure others will point you to any recent documents issued on this
(LDUP, Stephens's x.500 acl usage etc.). The Open group also appears to
be dabbling in this area....

However to give you some perspective as a directory vendor...we feel
that the opportunity has been missed for standard LDAP acl and that the
level of inter-vendor integration/synchronization implied by a standard
acl model (and repl model) will more realistically be achived by meta
directory/directory proxy type solutions.

You will find discussions on this on this list's archive (eg.
subject: moving access control discussion to LDUP) or on the
LDUP archive.

Dear Sir, Dear Madam,

I am excited to announce the Release of LDAP Administrator 2.4, the new
"Explorer-like" LDAP Client, which enables you to view, edit, analyse and
navigate through LDAP Directories easily and effectively.

LDAP Administrator is free LDAP Client made for Win 32 Platform presents
full connection and support to modern LDAP v2 and v3 Server such as Active
Directory, Novell Directory Services or Netscape/iPlanet.

LDAP Browser being a lightweight version of LDAP Administrator, has a
limitated functionality and not allow its users to modify LDAP Directories.
Unlike the commercially distributed LDAP Administrator, LDAP Browser is a
freeware.

Evaluate LDAP Administrator/LDAP Browser 2.4 for free at:

Shari,

Here's the complete list of access control standards I've personally been
involved in.

Open Group aznAPI (you can view HTML free but have to pay for .PDF):

      http://www.opengroup.org/publications/catalog/c908.htm

OMG CORBAsecurity (contains access control interfaces; for a better
description buy my book "CORBA Security"):

      http://www.omg.org/cgi-bin/doc?formal/2002-03-11

OMG RAD (Resource Access Decision)

      http://www.omg.org/cgi-bin/doc?formal/2001-04-01

OASIS SAML (Security Assertions Markup Language); this isn't an access
control specification per se but allows
an authorization decision service to consume standard subject attribute
descriptions and produce standard tokens
stating its decision:

      http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/security/

=======================

The Grand-daddy of access control specifications is the ISO Access Control
Framework; no one with an interest
in access control should be without a copy of this (even though you have to
pay for it):

http://www.iso.org/iso/en/CatalogueDetailPage.CatalogueDetail?CSNUMBER=18199&ICS1=35&ICS2=100&ICS3=1

You may also want to look at X.500 Access Control (though I think this
model has lots of problems; I can elaborate
off-list if you're interested); David Chadwick is my favorite source of
information on this topic

http://www.isi.salford.ac.uk/staff/dwc/Version.Web/Chapter.8/Chapter8a.htm

The actual specification is here:

http://www.itu.int/rec/recommendation.asp?type=items&lang=e&parent=T-REC-X.500-200102-I

Novell's NDS has an extremely powerful and flexible access control model;
Ed Reed (who often contributes
to this list) is a good source of information about it; I don't have a link
to a good description online.

Finally, you might want to take a look at the WebDAV access control model:

      http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-webdav-acl-09.txt

A group of people interested in progressing the password policy draft has been growing and exchanging emails off list. We're moving discussion here so we have a list and a wider audience.

The current topic has to do with storing password policy state information for objects. What is needed is a way to store values that represent state information on an object. There is the need to associate the state information with a password. This is because it's desirable to allow multiple passwords per object, and it to be allowed that policy can be described and executed separately for each password. Thus, we need a way of associating each bit of password policy state information with the password it applies to.

For example. There is an attribute called pwdExpirationWarned. This holds the timestamp of when the client was first warned that the password would expire soon, thus it is single-valued. Now, let's say the object that is subject to password policy makes use of three password attributes due to there being three different hard access interfaces: atmPassword, telePassword, and webPassword (think bank account access). When the pwdExpirationWarned attribute is updated (due to an impending password expiration), there needs to be some way of associating the warning with the password that will expire (let's say it's webPassword).

Our first attempt was to use attribute descriptions with a new tagging option called "pwd-". In the example above, pwdExpirationWarned;pwd-webPassword would be used to store/retrieve the warning time for the webPassword. The problem that was brought up with this approach (as I remember it) was that since the descr form of attribute types is not canonical, we cannot use it in the attribute option. It would lead to interoperability problems.

Quickly, it was suggested to just use the oid form of the attribute type, like pwdExpirationWarned;pwd-1.2.3.4. While this would solve the problem above, it is an illegal encoding. Attribute options are defined as consisting of ALPHA, DIGIT, and DASH characters.

Then the suggestion of moving the attribute association inside the value was put forth say something like "webPassword#200210240212Z". This requires new syntaxes which some implementors don't like, but worse: 1) It doesn't allow the attributes to be defined as single-value. 2) It doesn't allow the server to enforce uniqueness among the values. 3) It doesn't allow the replace operation (where replace would work with single-valued attributes). None of these limitations are desirable.

I would now like to suggest returning to the first or second suggestion. The first has limitations in a distributed environment, and maybe something can be done about it, but I'm not sure what. The second would be modified to fit the required syntax by replacing dots with dashes. Thus the example would change to: pwdExpirationWarned;pwd-1-2-3-4

Jim

p.s. I can provide a set of recent previous discussions on this and other issues to anyone that wants them.

At the risk of sounding like a crackpot...
=20
You may need to consider something like the X.509 certificate object class =
discussed in PKIX - an entry with all the policy associated with the =
particular credential - in this case a password associated with an =
authentication identity.
=20
The X.500 object model used in LDAP simply doesn't make it easy to =
associate different policy values in one attribute with specific attribute =
values in another.
=20
Better to think of it this way -
=20
Each password and its policy is really a user identity with some refinement=
s. That can be "security equivalent" to a particular user, or perhaps =
more correctly, the user entry can be "security equivalent" to the =
password used to log in. The logic to support such a thing would not be =
all that different from a login mechanism that allowed a user to select, =
from a list of allowed roles, those roles the user wanted to assume for a =
particular login session.
=20
It's messy, and fundamentally changes the way people think about identities=
and their credentials, but in a world where the same identity may use one =
of several credentials to authenticate, and if it's beneficial to =
associate different authorization rights with the individual based on =
which credential they used, it may be a necessary change to consider.

A group of people interested in progressing the password policy draft has =
been growing and exchanging emails off list. We're moving discussion here =
so we have a list and a wider audience.

The current topic has to do with storing password policy state information =
for objects. What is needed is a way to store values that represent state =
information on an object. There is the need to associate the state =
information with a password. This is because it's desirable to allow =
multiple passwords per object, and it to be allowed that policy can be =
described and executed separately for each password. Thus, we need a way =
of associating each bit of password policy state information with the =
password it applies to.

For example. There is an attribute called pwdExpirationWarned. This holds =
the timestamp of when the client was first warned that the password would =
expire soon, thus it is single-valued. Now, let's say the object that is =
subject to password policy makes use of three password attributes due to =
there being three different hard access interfaces: atmPassword, telePasswo=
rd, and webPassword (think bank account access). When the pwdExpirationWarn=
ed attribute is updated (due to an impending password expiration), there =
needs to be some way of associating the warning with the password that =
will expire (let's say it's webPassword).

Our first attempt was to use attribute descriptions with a new tagging =
option called "pwd-". In the example above, pwdExpirationWarned;pwd-webPas=
sword would be used to store/retrieve the warning time for the webPassword.=
The problem that was brought up with this approach (as I remember it) was =
that since the descr form of attribute types is not canonical, we cannot =
use it in the attribute option. It would lead to interoperability =
problems.

Quickly, it was suggested to just use the oid form of the attribute type, =
like pwdExpirationWarned;pwd-1.2.3.4. While this would solve the problem =
above, it is an illegal encoding. Attribute options are defined as =
consisting of ALPHA, DIGIT, and DASH characters.

Then the suggestion of moving the attribute association inside the value =
was put forth say something like "webPassword#200210240212Z". This =
requires new syntaxes which some implementors don't like, but worse: 1) It =
doesn't allow the attributes to be defined as single-value. 2) It doesn't =
allow the server to enforce uniqueness among the values. 3) It doesn't =
allow the replace operation (where replace would work with single-valued =
attributes). None of these limitations are desirable.

I would now like to suggest returning to the first or second suggestion. =
The first has limitations in a distributed environment, and maybe =
something can be done about it, but I'm not sure what. The second would be =
modified to fit the required syntax by replacing dots with dashes. Thus =
the example would change to: pwdExpirationWarned;pwd-1-2-3-4

Jim

p.s. I can provide a set of recent previous discussions on this and other =
issues to anyone that wants them.

It was also my first impression that this topic is very much the same sort
of discussion like storing X.509 certificates in separate subordinate
entries vs. certificate matching rules.

Maybe I missed something but how does the authentication mechanisms
distinguish which password to use for authentication in a specific
application? If you have really several applications with different
passwords then I'd suggest to simply put the application-specific
credentials in different (subordinate) entries (with different
application-specific object class assigned to them).

Anyway IMHO one objective of LDAP deployment was getting rid of many
passwords. At least that's what I read in most "whitepapers"... ;-)

Ciao, Michael.

How common is the "multiple passwords" scenario in real world
deployments? My impression is that it is very rare. If so, I am opposed
to doing extensive engineering and adding complexity for implementors
and users in order to support it. I think most people will be happy with
a password policy specification that only supports one password
attribute. But if we really need support for more than one, I vote for the:

     pwdExpirationWarned;pwd-userPassword
     pwdExpirationWarned;pwd-webPassword

approach. If we require that all attribute types used in conjunction
with password policy be registered with IANA, I don't think there will
be any serious interoperability problems with this approach.

Yes this came to my mind as well. Such a solution would also facilitate
for other password policy attributes, such as duration, minimal length
etc. etc. Implementationwise it seems to me that having all these
attributes in one entry is far more easier than having to parse all the
tags of the password attributes.

I very much appreciate this discussion. I think password policy is
something more and more needed, since LDAP is more and more used as
central authentication service.

And I appreciate that this discussion is now taking place on this list.

yes please. May be you could put them in a webarchive or so.

If the syntax is designed so that the first component is an
OBJECT IDENTIFIER (the password attribute type to which the
policy applies), then the objectIdentifierFirstComponentMatch can
be used as the equality matching rule and the server will enforce
the requirement of no more than one set of policy parameters
per password attribute type.

An aggregate syntax won't help with 3).

Steven
