A new version of I-D, draft-ymbk-lsvr-discovery-req-00.txt
has been successfully submitted by Randy Bush and posted to the
IETF repository.

Name: draft-ymbk-lsvr-discovery-req
Revision:	00
Title: BGP-SPF Topology Discovery Requirements
Document date:	2018-09-01
Group: Individual Submission
Pages: 6
URL: https://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ymbk-lsvr-discovery-req-00.txt
Status: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ymbk-lsvr-discovery-req/

Htmlized: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/draft-ymbk-lsvr-discovery-req

Abstract:
For wide scale routing protocols to build their topology and
reachability databases they need link neighbor discovery, link
encapsulation data, and layer two liveness. BGP-LS and its
enhancements provide an API to present much of these data to BGP
protocols, but do not actually collect these data. This document
explores the needs and criteria for the data needed.

Hi All,

Holiday season is over, maybe time to progress the discussion about DC secu=
rity properties.

Any constructive comments regarding the below "crude guess as a straw" from=
 Randy?

Brgds,

Subject: [Lsvr] security against what?

at the montr=E9al meeting, a few datacener operators said they were serious=
ly concerned about security. befofe thinking about any solution space, i a=
m interested in the basic question, what is the threat model?

here is my crude guess as a straw

not so much intentional mitm by an attacker

strange/unauthorized device plugs into a port. 92.3% of the problems
will be a miswire. datacenter clos miswires are a major issue.

someone plugs a (accidentally) poisoned laptop into a clos port.

clue bat from the ops, please.

randy

'datacenter operators' == "hyperscale web wonkers" ?

and 'the planet' is now 'someone else' but...)

agreed, very interestig discussion if it can be had. the miswire/rogue
laptop was what I heard muttered since a bit. whether solution is
authenticated address asignment (what if they show up with static?), some
mac security, insisting on some flavor of L3 adjacency with authentication
and so on seemed to be in the eye of the beholder ;-) ... There are some
ideas around ND in groups like 6lo btw. other flavor was link snooping &
there MACSEC is probably a viable answer.

yes, operators please ...

thanks

i asked in lsvr, which is what i guess you woud call hyperscale. lsvr
also tends toward decentralized,

> or 'datacenter operators' == 'colo provider' ('the planet' not 'equinix' -

1x would seem especially inapporpriate here as there is no
centralisation of authority.

>>> Is recommending 802.1x possible/sufficient (given the description in

>> it's a long way to that radius server

with coffee, i might expand a bit. during turn up of new links and
devices, it may not be easy to get to a distant 1x authority.

So, in a large datacenter where randos are able to walk around and affect
change to my cage's in/outs (and potentially clamp mitm/etc gear without my
knowledge) there's a different 'security concern' than there is in a
building I wholey own and operate behind several layers of physical
security and such.

If all of your "datacenter deployment" is inside a single cage in a
colocation building you MAY be "safe", but if you span cage spaces (who
ever decided on day-one in a building that they only would ever need 640kb
ram/squarefeet/kw/etc?) you are potentially sending your 'routing
protocols' over links outside of your immediate security perimeter.

That seems rather scary... like kinda really scary, actually...
I wonder how often people consider: "security of the data in the datacenter
(at rest or in flight)" but forget about the routing system which is
intrinsic to the operation of that datacenter?

I'd point out that if you put business critical dependencies 'far away' you
are a competitor I'd love to have? :)
Ideally once you figure out your deployment scenario and drive down all the
dependency tree branches you figure out who/what needs to be "local" to the
deployment, and how to live in a state where that dependency is unfulfilled
for part of the turnup/repair/turndown workflows. Right?

for example, compare jupiter rising to bgp-spf; both of which i think
are super cool

there are probably threats shared between the two, oh frabjious joy.
but i suspect the intersection is far smaller than the union.

yes, in which case one worries about those monkeys in the middle more
than ever

we would be out of work were it not for the na=EFve :)

sure. but at the moment, i am trying to tease out the lsvr ops' threat
models.

Deal WG (and extended groups),

Below is the current draft agenda for the Oct 1st Interim meeting. We
want to cover three key areas to help us make needed progress. These
are: (1). Deep Dive into Link Discovery Requirements, (2). Deep
Discussion on BGP-SPF Base Draft and (3), Needs/options for test code.

We can adjust / add topics if folks feel there are additional areas
to address for the in-person meeting. We feel we want to address
areas where we can have deep conversations with the captive audience
and focus.

Given recent WG interactions, I have included (cc'ed) the Opsec and
idr working groups.

Please provide feedback this week.

DRAFT

1. Deep Dive into Link Discovery (60 minutes)
- Review / confirm requirements in - draft-ymbk-lsvr-discovery-req-01
(50 Minutes)
- (w/ deep discussion and agreements on needs)
- Quick review of LSOE Draft - draft-ymbk-lsvr-lsoe-01 (10 Minutes)

2. Base Draft BGP-SPF (45 Minutes)
- Focus on draft-ietf-lsvr-bgp-spf-02 and needs / updates for future
-03 (if needed)
- Areas of Discussion / focus
- Affirm / Discussion zone / domain (flooding, policy interaction)
- Discussion on concept of IGP/calculated -common RIB for all routers
vs. BGP-sPF RIB? (do we need to close on this?, policy can alter
normal behavior)

3. BGP-SPF Security Requirement (30 Minutes)
- Re-cap current discussion, close on areas that need to be address
(discussion and plan for closure / if needed)

3. Discussion on Driving test code for protocol validation (15 Minutes)
- What do we need to do to get test code?
- Do we do a Hackathon? In IETF, outside IETF, idea=E2=80=99s sharing and c=
onsensus ?

DRAFT END

regards,

LSVR Chairs
Gunter and Victor

Abstract:
Many Massively Scaled Data Centers (MSDCs) have converged on
simplified layer 3 routing. Furthermore, requirements for
operational simplicity have lead many of these MSDCs to converge on
BGP as their single routing protocol for both their fabric routing
and their Data Center Interconnect (DCI) routing. This document
describes a solution which leverages BGP Link-State distribution and
the Shortest Path First (SPF) algorithm similar to Internal Gateway
   Protocols (IGPs) such as OSPF.
