Dear Philippe,

regarding the use of Instant Hellos and Instant TCs, with your
consideration we are more closely looking at the effects of our
implementation of Instant Hello / TC on LLN trigger to see if it is
functioning as it supposed to.

Thanks for your input.

Cheers,
Lee -S-

PS. In relation to the looping issue in general in OLSRv2, I'll be
available at the 75th IETF meeting in Stockholm to discuss it.

Hello,

I am currently writing an hardware architecture of OLSR in VHDL, and as a
consequence I can not use as many RAM blocks as I want to store the
repositories' data. So, I need to know what is the worst case for each olsr
repository.

I am considering a network of 256 nodes with a maximum of 16 neighbours per
node, and 3 interfaces per node.
It is not really hard to see that as a result there should not be more than
16 entries in the MPR Set, 16 in the MPR Selector Set, etc.

Actually, the only repository for which I can not figure its maximum size i=
s
the "Topology Set".
In my opinion, if there is 256 nodes in the network and a maximum of 16
neighbours per node, the worst case for this set is to contain 256 * 16
entries. Am I right about that ?

Thank you,
Aur=E9lien Ribon

All:

We should have discussions of active WG documents in Stockholm.
So we are reserving slots for those discussions.

Ian Chakeres will not be able to attend but I have plans to attend.
If anyone else would like a slot to discuss follow-on work, etc. please mail both Ian and myself. I hope to generate an agenda by the
end of the week.

can someone explain the section 6.2.2 in RFC3561.
it talks about the intermediate node sending RREP if it has the route to
destination.
i am not able to follow what are the steps to be followed for implementing
this.
Can someone break it it up a little bit...?

Hi
Im trying to implement AODV algorithm and i have this doubt about sequence
number.
What happens when there is a roll over in the sequence number? I am not
getting a clear idea of how to implement a algorithm according to what is
given in the aodv RFC3561.
For example,
i have allocated a 8bit value for sequence number..

suppose in a intermediate node the sequence number is 254.....but at the
destination, the sequence has incremented twice due to some reason....then
the present sequence wud be 1...
now if we compare the sequence numbers....the fresh packet will be
discarded by the intermediate node....

also..if the intermediate node has updated the sequence number to 2(the
case after a roll over has occured)...but receives a packet which was
created before the roll over...then the node wud accept that node thinking
that it has a "fresher" packet....

im totally confused....

Can anyone help me with the algorithm to tackle this roll over
problem.....
thanks in advance

Regards,
Deepak Gopalakrishnan

I have started to implement the AODV algorithm and i am facing hell lot of
problems.

I want to know how the reverse path and forward path maintained.
Is it that there is one route table and there is one entry for forward
path and one for reverse path...?
or is it like there is a route table for forward path and another for
reverse path.?

also in this concept of precursor...if i have to forward a RREP packet
from a intermediate node to the precursor...im not able to decide which
precursor i have to send because in my route table there are multiple
precursors....

i am totally stuck in this...

Deepak Gopalakrishnan

Dear authors of NHDP/OLSRv2/RFC5148,

I have a question about jitter in NHDP/OLSRV2 when triggering a message --
which I think is not clearly explained in the NHDP/OLSRv2 drafts or in
RFC5148. RFC5148 says:

"when a (externally triggered) message is transmitted, the next message is
allowed after a time (MESSAGE_MIN_INTERVAL - jitter)"

I understand that, however, there are two cases which are not clear to me:
1) The last message has been sent longer ago than MESSAGE_MIN_INTERVAL
In that case, how do I jitter? I would suppose to use a *positive*
jitter from 0 to MAX_JITTER in that case instead of the negative jitter in
the cited sentence from RFC5148.
2) If a message is triggered just very shortly before (last_message_sent +
MESSAGE_MIN_INTERVAL). In that case, if I simply subtract jitter from
MESSAGE_MIN_INTERVAL, I might have a negative value. Thomas told me to
choose a jitter value between the current time and MESSAGE_MIN_INTERVAL in
that case. But that leads to
   a) a non-uniform distribution between 0 and MAX_JITTER
   b) a possibly very small value of jitter; collisions might occur.

Can you explain me how to handle these cases?

Thanks
Ulrich

OK, that's about how long since the last message.

to me:

You always have to use a positive jitter - if triggered you can't go
back in
time! There are two rules:
(i) Wait between 0 and MAXJITTER. This of course depends on the reason
this has happened. If this is something local (like changing
addresses
for internal reasons) then there's no need to wait at all. If it's
due
to something external (such as a received message that's likely to
induce change is several nodes that receive the message) then
jitter.
(ii) The minimum interval. Note that this is jittered because otherwise
in
a busy network things will become de facto periodic, which is a bad
thing.
The reasons for the negative jitter on intervals are discussed in
RFC 5148.
(Strictly the reasons apply to the maximum interval, but they need
to
allow for non-responsive systems where the two are equal, hence
applying
them to the minimum interval avoids special cases.)

You need to satisfy both. Typically one or the other will be the
limiting
factor, but you have a case where both have an effect:

> 2) If a message is triggered just very shortly before
(last_message_sent
> + MESSAGE_MIN_INTERVAL). In that case, if I simply subtract jitter
from
> MESSAGE_MIN_INTERVAL, I might have a negative value. Thomas told me to

MESSAGE_MIN_INTERVAL

> a) a non-uniform distribution between 0 and MAX_JITTER
> b) a possibly very small value of jitter; collisions might occur.

I would say, obey both (i) and (ii). But note that RFC 5148 does not
specify an exact algorithm. That's by intent, as there are enough
complicating factors. (One such being packetisation, which allows
scope for the clever implementor to get better performance - and we
didn't want to constrain him, as he might have a better idea than
us) And it's not essential for interworking (if it were we would
specify an algorithm).

> Can you explain me how to handle these cases?

I know I've implemented more than one timing algorithm for OLSRv1/v2.
(Note that we invented the minimum interval and jittering it here as
a proprietary extension to OLSRv1 - see the first OLSR Interop.) So
there is more than one way to do things. But right now I don't recall
exactly how I handle this case, except to note carefully.

Is this critical? Well, you point out issues if you do one thing.
Are those show-stoppers? Probably not. Are they undesirable? Probably.
(Note that handling of forwarding of messages in multi-message packets
takes care to indicate a single jitter value for all messages to
avoid exactly those issues.)

To maintain forward and reverse paths, both of your suggestions are applicable but the former should be preferred as it demands only one table.
For the precursor, as for as I know, a list of precursor nodes is maintained at every node and you should send to the whole precursor list.

IMPORTANT: Please DO INFORM me if you get any better solutions OR you or any one else thinks me wrong.

Regards

A new version of I-D, draft-ietf-manet-smf-09.txt has been successfuly submitted by Joseph Macker and posted to the IETF repository.

Filename: draft-ietf-manet-smf
Revision: 09
Title: Simplified Multicast Forwarding
Creation_date: 2009-07-13
WG ID: manet
Number_of_pages: 49

Abstract:
This document describes a Simplified Multicast Forwarding (SMF)
mechanism that provides basic IP multicast forwarding suitable for
wireless mesh and mobile ad hoc network (MANET) use. SMF defines
techniques for multicast duplicate packet detection (DPD) to be
applied in the forwarding process and includes maintenance and
checking operations for both IPv4 and IPv6 protocol use. SMF also
specifies mechanisms for applying reduced relay sets to achieve more
efficient multicast data distribution within a mesh topology versus
simple flooding. The document describes interactions with other
protocols and multiple deployment approaches. Distributed algorithms
for selecting reduced relay sets and related discussion are provided
in the Appendices. Basic issues relating to the operation of
multicast MANET border routers are discussed but ongoing work remains
in this area beyond the scope of this document.

This version does NOT contain the suggested change that TCs only need to=20
contain routable addresses of a OLSR router, right ? I still think to deman=
d=20
interface IPs in a TC is a bad idea.

Thanks for the new version of the NHDP draft. I like the Appendix E which
illustrates the "Interval and Timer Illustrations". I suggest to add some
cases with jitter in this appendix. In my implementation, I spent most of
the time trying to understand the different cases with timers and jitters,
and I am still not 100% sure that I got all cases correctly (in particular
with jittering for externally triggered messages). Some examples using
jitter in the new Appendix could help to understand that better.

This document describes the Hierarchical Optimized Link State Routing
(HOLSR) mechanism for heterogeneous mobile ad hoc networks. In this
specification a heterogeneous mobile ad hoc network is defined as a
network of mobile routers that are characterized by different
communication capabilities, such as communication channels,
processing powers or energy levels.

The HOLSR mechanism is an extension to the OLSRv2 protocol. HOLSR
takes advantage of the router's distinct communications capabilities
to reduce the routing control overhead in large heterogeneous ad hoc
networks, thus improving the performance of the routing mechanism.
More precisely, HOLSR defines a hierarchy in the network and presents
a routing scheme for this hierarchical structure with a better
scalability.

Hi, all.
We formalized our ideas on supporting multiple paths in MANET routing.
As the first work result,
we published general ideas about using the multi-path routing in MANET.

Currently, we are making our multi-path routing protocol using Linux kernel.
After the 75IETF, we will also publish the details about multi-path routing
protocol.

Please welcome to comment.

Best Regards.

JungSoo.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.

Title : Analysis and Scenarios of generating the Multi-Path
Routings
       Author(s) : J. Park, et al.
       Filename :

       Pages : 10
       Date : 2009-07-06

This document discusses the use of multiple interfaces of Mobile Ad
hoc NETworks (MANETs) nodes and multiple path MANET routings
protocols with respect to traditional, single network interface based
ones. It then describes the design principles and methods of
multiple path routing over MANET nodes with multiple interfaces.

I noticed a typo in Section 7.1 on page 28:

   2. Otherwise:

       1. Otherwise:

           1. If the message is of a type which may be processed,
including being a TC message, then the message is
               considered for processing according to Section 7.2, AND;

One "Otherwise:" should probably be eliminated...

Best regards,
Arnd

I noticed a typo in Section 7.1 on page 28:

   2. Otherwise:

       1. Otherwise:

           1. If the message is of a type which may be processed,
including being a TC message, then the message is
               considered for processing according to Section 7.2, AND;

One "Otherwise:" should probably be eliminated...

Best regards,
Arnd

All:

Ian Chakeres (co-chair) had planned to be absent in Stockholm due to
(child on way, etc). I had planned to cover this meeting as chair.
Unfortunately, I have had a last minute problem causing my travel
plans to be cancelled. I was really looking forward to attending and
discussing work in person with the everyone.

The manet meeting will proceed as planned and the agenda has been
updated on-line. The chairs have asked Brian Adamson to proxy chair
in our absence. Brian is an experienced Transport Area chair and
active in the manet WG as well.

As I receive presentations I will be posting. I will plan to follow
along in jabber session, etc and am available for remote discussions
through next Wednesday.

As a reminder you can view meeting agenda, materials at:

http://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/75/materials.html

This will continue to be updated as materials arrive over the weekend
and during next week.

 -Joe
