Hi Cullen,

Usual response - please send the actual registration templates
in plaintext in an email to the Media Types list. Then the edits
needed (there always are some) are clearly documented on
the mailing list.

Cheers,
- Ira

Sure - here it is=20

11.3.1. senml+json Media Type Registration

   Type name: application

   Subtype name: senml+json and sensml+json

   Required parameters: none

   Optional parameters: none

Encoding considerations: Must be encoded as using a subset of the
encoding allowed in [RFC7159]. See RFC-AAAA for details. This
simplifies implementation of very simple system and does not impose
any significant limitations as all this data is meant for machine to
machine communications and is not meant to be human readable.

Security considerations: Sensor data can contain a wide range of
information ranging from information that is very public, such the
outside temperature in a given city, to very private information that
requires integrity and confidentiality protection, such as patient
health information. This format does not provide any security and
instead relies on the transport protocol that carries it to provide
security. Given applications need to look at the overall context of
how this media type will be used to decide if the security is
   adequate.

Interoperability considerations: Applications should ignore any JSON
key value pairs that they do not understand. This allows backwards
compatibility extensions to this specification. The "bver" field can
be used to ensure the receiver supports a minimal level of
functionality needed by the creator of the JSON object.

   Published specification: RFC-AAAA

Applications that use this media type: The type is used by systems
that report e.g., electrical power usage and environmental
information such as temperature and humidity. It can be used for a
wide range of sensor reporting systems.

hello.

https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-wilde-json-seq-suffix seems to be
reasonable enough that nobody has objected to it. we would like to move
forward with this so that we can use it for a media type that we are
working on in the GeoJSON working group.

what is the best way to move forward? as requested by
https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6838#section-6, i have created a
registration template here:

https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-wilde-json-seq-suffix-00#section-4

i am including this registration template literally to help the review
process via media-types@iana.org:

----------------------------------------

       Name: JSON Text Sequence

       +suffix: +json-seq

       References: [3]

       Encoding considerations: See [3]

Fragment identifier considerations: The syntax and semantics of
fragment identifiers specified for +json-seq SHOULD be as
specified for "application/json-seq". (At publication of this
document, there is no fragment identification syntax defined for
       "application/json-seq".)

The syntax and semantics for fragment identifiers for a
specific "xxx/yyy+json-seq" SHOULD be processed as follows:

For cases defined in +json-seq, where the fragment
identifier resolves per the +json-seq rules, then process as
             specified in +json-seq.

For cases defined in +json-seq, where the fragment
identifier does not resolve per the +json-seq rules, then
             process as specified in "xxx/yyy+json-seq".

For cases not defined in +json-seq, then process as
             specified in "xxx/yyy+json-seq".

       Interoperability considerations: n/a

       Security considerations: See [3]

Contact: Applications and Real-Time Area Working Group
       (art@ietf.org)

Author/Change controller: The Applications and Real-Time Area
Working Group. IESG has change control over this registration.

----------------------------------------

assuming media-types@iana.org review ends favorably, i guess i'll need a
shepherd for this document to move it through the RFC pipeline? what's
the best process to find one, or does anybody volunteer?

thanks a lot and kind regards,

dret.

Hi Robert,

This looks basically fine, a couple of minor things below:

This looks a bit contradictory: if non US-ASCII values are %-encoded,
then this will be 7bit?

Also, can you have lines longer than 1000 octets here before CRLF? If
the answer is yes, then Encoding should be "7bit or Binary" (or "8bit or
Binary").

My concern about the name is its broad nature. Is there a more
specific name that could be used instead?

Also, would a +json suffix be suitable? I see there's a canonical form
defined; is that why the suffix wasn't used?

In addition to Alexey's comments, I'm not quite sure what's going on
at the end of that description, and I can't find any percent encoded
examples in the draft to help me understand.

Mark.

[RFC6838], which can be used to indicate that the content is a
   PASSporT defined JWT and JWS.

   o Subtype name: passport

   o Required parameters: n/a

   o Optional parameters: n/a

   o Encoding considerations: 8bit; application/passport values outside
the US-ASCII range are encoded using percent encoding as described
in Section 2.1 of [RFC3986] (some values may be the empty string),
each separated from the next by a single period ('.') character.</pre>

Originally this indeed was a mistake, but after some discussion and =
specifically Jim Schaad pointed out that PASSporT after construction is =
not a JSON object, but rather a bunch of Base64 encoded characters with =
=E2=80=98.'. So, based on this I think we should stick with just =
=E2=80=9Cpassport"

only using SHOULD, not a MUST above).

Based on conclusion above about only using Base64 encoded ASCII/UTF-8 =
and some further discussion and looking at JWT/JWS, we are going to =
change this to=20

o Encoding considerations: 8bit; PASSporT values are encoded as a =
series
of base64url-encoded ASCII values (some of which may be the empty
string) separated by period ('.') characters.

The only thing here we could consider is setting 7bit, because the =
resulting Base64 and =E2=80=98.=E2=80=99 is really just ASCII =
characters, but didn=E2=80=99t want to conflict with what is in RFC7519 =
JWT.
   o Type name: application
   o Subtype name: jwt
   o Required parameters: n/a
   o Optional parameters: n/a
o Encoding considerations: 8bit; JWT values are encoded as a series
of base64url-encoded values (some of which may be the empty
string) separated by period ('.') characters.

So, i=E2=80=99m ok just adding .json as a possible use of storing =
passport object, but in reality these tokens are only constructed during =
the life of a call in the real-time signaling path, so we really would =
NEVER create any file for this, so now I=E2=80=99m thinking we just go =
back to n/a, if that=E2=80=99s acceptable.

Here is the resulting proposed request:

In the registration below, RFC-AAAA would point at an RFC based on =
draft-ietf-core-senml-04

   Type name: application

   Subtype name: senml+exi and sensml+exi

   Required parameters: none

   Optional parameters: none

Encoding considerations: Must be encoded as using
   [W3C.REC-exi-20140211]. See RFC-AAAA for details.

Security considerations: Sensor data can contain a wide range of
information ranging from information that is very public, such the
outside temperature in a given city, to very private information that
requires integrity and confidentiality protection, such as patient
health information. This format does not provide any security and
instead relies on the transport protocol that carries it to provide
security. Given applications need to look at the overall context of
how this media type will be used to decide if the security is
   adequate.

Interoperability considerations: Applications should ignore any tags
or attributes that they do not understand. This allows backwards
compatibility extensions to this specification. The "bver" attribute
in the senml tag can be used to ensure the receiver supports a
minimal level of functionality needed by the creator of the XML.
Further information on using schemas to guide the EXI can be found in
   RFC-AAAA.

   Published specification: RFC-AAAA

Applications that use this media type: The type is used by systems
that report e.g., electrical power usage and environmental
information such as temperature and humidity. It can be used for a
wide range of sensor reporting systems.

In the registration below, RFC-AAAA would point at an RFC based on =
draft-ietf-core-senml-04

   Type name: application

   Subtype name: senml+cbor and sensml+cbor

   Required parameters: none

   Optional parameters: none

Encoding considerations: Must be encoded as using [RFC7049]. See
   RFC-AAAA for details.

Security considerations: Sensor data can contain a wide range of
information ranging from information that is very public, such the
outside temperature in a given city, to very private information that
requires integrity and confidentiality protection, such as patient
health information. This format does not provide any security and
instead relies on the transport protocol that carries it to provide
security. Given applications need to look at the overall context of
how this media type will be used to decide if the security is
   adequate.

Interoperability considerations: Applications should ignore any key
value pairs that they do not understand. This allows backwards
compatibility extensions to this specification. The "bver" field can
be used to ensure the receiver supports a minimal level of
functionality needed by the creator of the CBOR object.

   Published specification: RFC-AAAA

Applications that use this media type: The type is used by systems
that report e.g., electrical power usage and environmental
information such as temperature and humidity. It can be used for a
wide range of sensor reporting systems.

   Additional information:

   Magic number(s): none

   File extension(s): senmlc and sensmlc

   Macintosh file type code(s): none

Person & email address to contact for further information: Cullen
   Jennings <fluffy@iii.ca>

   Intended usage: COMMON

   Restrictions on usage: None

   Author: Cullen Jennings <fluffy@iii.ca>
