Hello

I have suggested a revised and simplified application below, taking
into account the valuable comments by Sean Leonard and Chris Lilley
regarding charset and RFC 7303. Hopefully this is now ok.

Type name: application

Subtype name: adx+xml

Required parameters: none

Optional parameters: charset (as for application/xml per RFC 7303)

Encoding considerations:

  As per RFC 7303

Security considerations:

See the security considerations for application/xml in RFC7303

Interoperability considerations:

  As for application/xml per RFC7303

Published specification:

  See http://ihe.net/uploadedFiles/Documents/QRPH/IHE_QRPH_Suppl_ADX_Rev2.0=
_PC_2017-05-26.pdf

Applications that use this media type:

A wide variety of systems involved in routine public health reporting.

Fragment identifier considerations:
  None

Additional information:
  None

Deprecated alias names for this type:
  N/A

Magic number(s):
  N/A

File extension(s):
  N/A

Macintosh file type code(s):
  N/A

Person & email address to contact for further information:

  QRPH Technical committee : qrph@ihe.net

Intended usage:

   COMMON

Restrictions on usage:
  None

Author: Bob Jolliffe and James Kariuki

Change controller: QRPH Technical Committee qrph@ihe.net

Provisional registration? (standards tree only): yes

Dear experts,

As a representative of the Audio Subgroup of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11, a.k.a.=
MPEG, I would like to propose the registration of the mime type, or media =
type:

 "audio/aac"

MPEG has produced a resolution which describes the necessary fields for reg=
istration. This resolution can be found here for public download:

http://mpeg.chiariglione.org/standards/mpeg-4/audio/mime-type-registration-=
isoiec-14496-3-mpeg-4-aache-aache-aac-v2

Please follow the download link for w17017.zip

With this e-mail I would kindly like to invite experts to review and commen=
t on the proposal as recommended in RFC6838, 5.2.

We intend to register this mime type in the Standards Tree for types "regis=
tered by a recognized standards-related organization".

A similar review request will follow for registration of "audio/usac".

Any feedback is welcome.

Kind regards,
Max Neuendorf

Dear experts,

As a representative of the Audio Subgroup of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11, a.k.a.=
MPEG, I would like to propose the registration of the mime type, or media =
type:

 "audio/usac"

MPEG has produced a resolution which describes the necessary fields for reg=
istration. This resolution can be found here for public download:

http://mpeg.chiariglione.org/standards/mpeg-d/unified-speech-and-audio-codi=
ng/mime-type-registration-isoiec-23003-3-mpeg-d-usac

Please follow the download link for w17022.zip.

With this e-mail I would kindly like to invite experts to review and commen=
t on the proposal as recommended in RFC6838, 5.2.

We intend to register this mime type in the Standards Tree for types "regis=
tered by a recognized standards-related organization".

Note that there is a related review request for registration of "audio/aac"=
.

Any feedback is welcome.

Kind regards,
Max Neuendorf

What does AAC stand for, if anything?

This is the same thing as .aac files, right (what people commonly but
erroneously refer to as "Apple Audio Codec")?

What is the relationship between this and .m4* (m4a, m4b, m4v), etc.?

For the benefit of reviewers, we ask that you post the text of the
proposed registration in the body of your e-mail message to this list.

Regards,

Sean

I re-post with the actually proposed registration text.
USAC stands for "Unified Speech and Audio Coding", also referred to as Exte=
nded High Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding (xHE-AAC).

2.3	Type Name
"audio"

2.4	Subtype Name
Standards Tree (no prefix)

2.5	Required Parameters

2.6	Optional Parameters

2.7	Encoding Considerations
Binary

Files are encoded binary USAC audio packed in the MPEG-4 audio format Low O=
verhead Audio Transport Multiplex / Low Overhead Audio Stream (LATM/LOAS) a=
s defined in ISO/IEC 14496-3.=20
Files SHALL be transmitted without CR/LF conversion, 7-bit stripping, or an=
y other modification to the binary data.
Files MAY contain ID3v2.x frames at any LATM/LOAS frame boundary.
For use over the Internet, it is assumed that lower layers take care of tra=
nsmission errors, so audio/usac data MAY include USAC frames generated with=
out the optional cyclic redundancy check (CRC) data. Bit rate not allocated=
to CRC data can be allocated to audio data, thus yielding improved audio q=
uality.
The USAC audio data is binary data, and must be specifically encoded for no=
n-binary transport; the Base64 encoding is suitable when attaching to Email=
. Note that the MPEG audio data typically does not yield further compressio=
n when using file-based lossless compression, e.g. zip.

2.8	Security Considerations
USAC is a tagged data format, and some tags are available for private use. =
As such, arbitrary material could potentially be transferred in the USAC s=
tream, including executable content. Tagged data containing executable cont=
ent SHOULD never be sent and MUST not be executed if it is received.
Note: The requirement that such content must not be executed on receipt is =
especially important since situations exist where content will be generated=
independently and therefore could contain executable content that the send=
er or receiver is unaware of.
It is the responsibility of the decoder/player client to respect and apply =
appropriate file security and protection against any potential malicious co=
ntent.
audio/usac objects are not signed or encrypted internally. External securit=
y mechanisms must be employed to ensure content confidentiality and integri=
ty.

2.9	Interoperability Considerations
The AAC family of codec technologies is specified in ISO/IEC 13818-7 as AAC=
 LC Profile, in ISO/IEC 14496-3 as AAC, HE-AAC and HE-AAC v2 Profiles, and =
in ISO/IEC 23003-3 as xHE-AAC Profile. Implementations of the AAC family of=
technologies have reference software for reading and writing the file form=
at and are available for a variety of computer platforms.

2.10	Published specification
ISO/IEC 23003-3
ISO/IEC 14496-3
ISO/IEC 13818-7

2.11	Application Usage
USAC audio is device, platform, and vendor neutral and is supported by a wi=
de range of encoders and decoders/players, for example for Multimedia, HLS =
Audio-Only Streams - IETF HTTP Live Streaming, SHOUTcast/Icecast2 Audio Str=
eams.

Subject: [media-types] Proposal for registration of media type "audio/usac"

I would have thought that Media Fragments would be applicable here; for
example, linking to a particular point in an audio file (rather than
just the beginning).

Dear Paul,

thank you for your suggestions. I will have to look into that. It's not my =
home turf.

I had a quick glance at Apple's URIs and it seems they need to be registere=
d by Apple.
Maybe both, audio/aac and audio/usac, will fall under public.mpeg-4-audio. =
Not sure, though, because those might assume that the audio comes in an MP4=
File Container. That is specifically not the case for audio/aac and audio/=
usac.

Best,
Max

I don=E2=80=99t think so.
This document:

And it says quite later (System Declared UTIs):

Registration of 4-letter-codes, the ancestor of UTIs which is still in =

That seems tricky then. Maybe specify more than one clipboard flavour??

So. If it is not the case, that mp4-containers are always used=E2=80=A6 =
Are all other container formats recognisable by people who would apply =
these media-types?

thanks in advance.

Upon review of this, the only showstopper is that the character =E2=80=A2=
 is=20
present in the registration, which I believe is not allowed. Only=20
printable ASCII characters are allowed in registrations at this time.=20
(It's a pedantic concern, but that's the way it is. RFC 6838/the=20
registration procedure should probably be updated at some point.)

As a suggestion/concern, I think that the magic number(s) field should=20
specify the position of those bytes in the byte stream, without=20
reference to structures in the format itself. RFC 6838 says: "Magic=20
numbers are byte sequences that are always present at a given place in=20
the file and thus can be used to identify entities as being of a given=20
media type." Basically the idea is: if you have a random blob of bytes=20
and a media type service (e.g., HTTP, e-mail client) tries to serve it,=20
can the service sniff the content without knowing much of anything about =

what it is, and serve it as this media type? So, this field should say=20
where 0x2B7 occurs as an exact offset from the beginning of the content, =

or a way to use the first few bytes of the content to figure out the=20
variable offset.

Regards,

Sean

The names of the files you get when you click on the links in the =
"Template" columns of the tables are just the last components of the =
media type; that makes it harder to open them in text files. (For =
example, application/vnd.tcpdump.pcap looks like a pcap capture file if =
you have Wireshark installed and it's registered for pcap files on your =
system.)

Should the template files have names ending with .txt?

Also, the download should perhaps offer a media type of =
application/text, to make it more likely that browsers will display them =
as text.=

I disagree =96 IMHO it=92s more important that we have a 1:1 mapping from m=
ime type to URI. In fact, it would to me be more important to add a web res=
