Hi,

as you might have dedicted, I did not do this.

In talk about other issues with Ole Tröan, he suggested RFC4620 "IPv6 Node
Information Queries" as a potential mechanism that could be augmented for
sharing all kinds of information between nodes. I just read this and it
could be used, but I don't have a firm opinion yet exactly how it should
be formatted, how to do indirection (if needed).

I feel we need to understand the deployment model better, we need to
decide who should have access to what information (if we put it in DNS,
should anyone on the Internet have access to the speed of the Internet
connection and if it's metered or not? There are pros and cons with both
making it secret or not).

Hi,

if I get delegated a /56, and I have multiple /64s out of this /56.

If this PvD has indications that it's metered, how should nodes handle
traffic within this /56. Intra-/56 traffic would be high-speed and not
really share the properties of the rest of the PvD.

So I guess my concern here is that generally we think of the PvD as
properties for traffic *outside* of the subnet, so the properties are not
really shared for on-link traffic, but instead it's traffic that is going
via something else, ie everything offlink.

I don't see this specifically written anywhere, but is this the consensus
we have? If I have a home with multiple routers, should the properties be
applied for my inter-subnet traffic within my home as well?

Potentially, wouldn't it make sense that the PvD properties apply to
routes used with the source address, so I can have one set of properties
for the /56, potentially another set for my provider /29 , perhaps I have
some zero-rated destinations that I can talk to where the properties are
different, and then another set of properties entirely for traffic sent to
the default route?

My reason for bringing this up is our discussion regarding what transport
to use. I think it's important to understand how big the information blob
is going to be, who might give input to the information blob, and if I
want to apply local "intra-home" policy to my clients to augment
information my ISP provides. This kind of "local policy edits" kinds of
decices what mechanism could be used for it, so I think it's premature to
try to decide mechanism before we know how the information is going to be
used, how we think it should be formatted and what it applies to?

In the homenet naming architecture this is addressed by giving out multiple=
caching resolver IP addresses per link, one for each pvd.

Below, please find some proposed charter text to be discussed at the MIF =
WG meeting this afternoon, as well as on the WG mailing list.

During the meeting this afternoon, we will discuss three options for the =
WG: rechartering, going on hiatus until the community has more =
experience with PvDs, or closing the group.

Some of our key contributors are not here in Buenos Aires, so if you =
have an opinion about this discussion, please post it on the mailing =
list in addition to raising your comments in the MIF meeting this =
afternoon. No final decision will be made until everyone, here and =
elsewhere, has had a chance to express their opinion on this topic, =
which means that we will not be making a final decision today.

Thank you,
Margaret

=3D=3D=3D

The purpose of the MIF Working Group is to define how hosts should =
behave in the presence of multiple concurrent network connections. =
Multiple network connections can be made over multiple physical network =
interfaces, a combination of physical and virtual interfaces (VPNs or =
tunnels), or even over a single interface that connects to more than one =
external network.

Nodes attached to multiple networks may encounter problems due to =
conflicting network configuration information and/or due to the =
simultaneous use of multiple available networks. These problems are =
outlined in the RFC 6418: Multiple Interfaces and Provisioning Domains =
Problem Statement.

The Multiple Interfaces (MIF) WG defined the architectural concept of a =
Provisioning Domain (PvD) to denote a consistent set of network =
configuration information associated with a network connection, and =
provided a solution framework for nodes that are connected to more than =
one PvD in RFC7556: Multiple Provisioning Domain Architecture. The =
existence of a PvD may be inferred by the host (resulting in an implicit =
PvD), or explicitly configured (resulting in an explicit PvD).

The MIF Working Group is focused on three remaining items:

1. Determining how explicit PvDs will be configured.

2. Determining how hosts can discover more information about a PvD to =
which it is attached. This might include: a PvD ID, connectivity =
characteristics for the connection, costs associated with use of the =
network connection, etc.

3. Determining the requirements for a MPVD API, and defining an =
abstract MPVD API which will allow applications and middleware to =
determine and manipulate information about local PvDs. Among other =
things, this API could allow advanced applications to choose a PvD for =
an outbound connection, thus influencing next hop selection, source =
address selection, interface selection, and DNS server selection.

The MIF WG may also provide advice to operating system developers or =
application developers on how to provide an improved connectivity =
experience when a host is attached to multiple networks or when there is =
a change in the set of networks to which a host is attached.

Hi Dave,
Following up on your suggestion - in mif IETF 95 - to consider RFC 4191 /RI=
O values (L/M/H) for conveying dmm prefix cost (https://tools.ietf.org/html=
/draft-mccann-dmm-prefixcost-03):
RIO values represent preferences for a destination route/prefix - these are=
preferences per router, and not per on-link prefix.

In the case of dmm-prefixcost, they are values in PIO meta data representin=
g cost per on-link prefix (single link, and single access router).
Prefix-cost is low (preferred) at initial attachment, and increases as the=
MN (mobile node) moves further away (e.g., PMIP tunnel across short, high =
speed backhaul may result in medium costs, and PMIP tunnel across a multipl=
e backhaul/WAN network results in much higher costs).

RIO would not be able to represent values for such multiple on-link prefixe=
s.
Is my understanding of RFC 4191 /the use of RIO correct?

BR,
John

Hello,

As discussed at the meeting at IETF 95:

1) Yes, I am working on PvDs
2) I believe MIF should recharter to focus on the remaining work =
(primarily, defining discovery and use of Explicit PvDs; and defining =
requirements for use and interaction with PvDs)
3) Yes, I would like to work on ideas and drafts for PvDs around the =
recharter items mentioned above

I think that the work that MIF has done to lay down the definitions of =
PvDs is useful, but there is a bit more work that should be done to make =
sure these concepts can be usefully applied to real-life scenarios that =
require explicit PvD configuration. Leaving that work by the wayside =
would potentially hinder other working groups that have mentioned MIF as =
a source of solutions for this space.

Thanks,
Tommy

Hi All,

Putting on my AD hat, I am somewhat concerned that there isn't a sizeable
cohort of active participants to both work on solutions, documents, and
perform reviews.

I see that a (small) number of proponents have a strong vision of what
they believe the WG should work on, and that is great. The question that
now has to be asked is will that convert into an active workgroup that
achieves its milestones?

Cheers
Terry
