formats that don't have their own media type, and for making clear the diff=
erence between a "media type" and a "format". Media types provide informati=
on about the serialization of content, but don't actually define the model =
of the content. Schemas can be used to help the parser understand the conte=
nt, rolie:format provides a means to describe both the model and the schema=
of the content. We could solve this by providing some modified media type,=
but this would require just as much specification as our current solution.=
As an example, how would we best specify to a consumer that the content el=
ement links to an IODEF document? It's media type is XML, but there remains=
information that can only be gleaned by downloading the entire content fi=
le.

You describe the exact purpose of a media type. The advantage of
media types being that the type is available in more places than just
a ROLIE Feed. For instance, you can use content negotiation in HTTP
to ensure that you get something you can consume.

I'm not saying that this is more or less specification, it's just that
you get more value from a media type than you do with this sort of
mechanism. Even if it means minting a few more media types.

Furthermore, identifying a schema is usually inadequate to describe
the relevant parts of an XML format. There are many generic container
formats in XML for which listing the top-level schema is pointless.
ROLIE itself suffers from this because it uses Atom. It's not even
possible to list schemas, because that loses critical information
about what elements are used in what contexts. In order to properly
capture the full transitive closure of formats, you need something
considerably richer (I once thought that this worth doing/possible,
but that idea was quickly abandoned without really testing it fully:
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-thomson-simple-expressing-xml-support-00)=
.

> rolie:property has a couple of advantages over defining the key-value pai=
rs in XML. Defining new elements in XML is expensive. In the ROLIE core doc=
ument we define 4 new properties, which would yield 4 new elements in the s=
chema. In our Software Descriptor we define another software specific prope=
rty, and we may add more as we iterate the draft. There are two other exten=
sions in development that may add new properties as well. rolie:property pr=
ovides a means to easily define new properties without generating a huge nu=
mber of new elements.

I disagree on the XML - the amount of effort you put in to define your
XML properties is pretty minimal: a namespace and schema, plus
semantics of each of the fields. You gain the ability to properly
constrain the grammar (for example, you could use xs:dateTime for
content-updated-date instead of prose). You have demonstrated how
easy that can be in this document (by defining rolie:property itself).

I've dealt with extensible fields like this in the past (see RFC
6848), and it's no more difficult to pair up ns+localname and simple
value than it is to pair up URN and simple value.

As proposed, you also have a new registry for these fields, which is
strictly more costly.

p.s., I thought you were going to remove
"urn:ietf:params:rolie:property:local", but it is still in -13. That
would of course be moot if you did as I suggest.

u still have technical concerns?

erence between a "media type" and a "format".

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Managed Incident Lightweight Exchange WG of the IETF.

Title : JSON binding of IODEF
        Authors : Takeshi Takahashi
                          Mio Suzuki
	Filename : draft-ietf-mile-jsoniodef-01.txt
	Pages : 57
	Date : 2017-11-11

Abstract:
RFC 7970 [RFC7970] provides XML-based data representation on incident
information, but the use of the IODEF data model is not limited to
XML. JSON representation is sometimes preferred since it is easy to
handle from certain programming environments. This draft represents
the IODEF data model in JSON.

representations of software descriptors, security incidents, attack
indicators, software vulnerabilities, configuration checklists, and
other security automation information as web-addressable resources.
Furthermore, consumers and other stakeholders may access and search
this security information as needed, establishing a rapid and on-
demand information exchange network for restricted internal use or
public access repositories. This specification extends the Atom
Publishing Protocol and Atom Syndication Format to transport and
   share security automation resource representations.

COMMENT:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for addressing my DISCUSS points.

I talked to Mark Nottingham about use of RFC5005 link relations and he
explained that I was mistaken. However we agreed that slightly modifying link
relation definitions from RFC5005 is not the best thing.

I am still concerned that user authentication is under-specified, but I can
live with existing text.

Hi Stephen and John!

>From my reading of draft-banghart-mile-rolie-csirt-02, I have the following=
 feedback:

(1) Section 3, Additional Requirements for the Atom Publishing Protocol

** Cite RFC5023 as the reference for Atom Publishing Protocol.

(2) Section 4,
** Cite RFC4287 as the reference for Atom Syndication Format.

(3) Section 3.1.2, User Authorization

** In the first sentence, I'd recommend replacing s/When the content model =
.../When the content for the Atom <content> element contains an <IODEF-Docu=
ment>/ for readability.
** Also the first sentence states "... the authorization MUST be adjudicat=
ed ... per Section 8.1.1". What specific section in 8.1.1 is being referen=
ced? Is it @restriction? Is it also worth noting that this adjudication w=
ill be done is outside the scope of the document -- some sites might treat =
@restriction=3D"need-to-know" differently?
** <IODEF-Document> is mentioned but without citation.

(4) Section 4, Additonal Requirements for the Atom Syndication Format
** s/Additonal/Additional/ (typo in the Section title)

(5) Section 4.1, Additional Requirements for the atom:feed element
** s/Additonal/Additional/ (typo in the Section title)
** The first sentence states "A feed containing IODEF incident content MUST=
contain at least two additional <atom:category> elements." What does it m=
ean to contain "IODEF incident content"? Is "IODEF incident content" an in=
stance of an <IODEF-Document> whose includes at least one <Incident>?

(6) Section 4.2, Additonal Requirements for the atom:entry element
** s/Additonal/Additional/ (typo in the Section title)
** The first sentence states "An entry containing an IODEF payload." What =
does it mean to contain an "IODEF payload"? Is it an instance of <IODEF-Do=
cument>?

(7) Section 4.3.1, The IODEF Document

** s/<relatedActivity>/<RelatedActivity>/
** s/<history>/<History>/

(8) Section 5.1, "incident" information type

** The fifth bullet uses the language "effect and result information", it m=
ight be clearer to refer to it as the "incident impact"

(9) Section 5.3.1, IODEF Format

** Cite IODEF with an informative reference
** The last paragraph states that "The use of the IODEF format imposes addi=
tional requirements on the server." Where are those requirement documented=
?

(10) Section 5.3.2, STIX Format

** Cite STIX with an informative reference

(11) Section 6.1, urn:ietf:params:rolie:property:csirt:ID

** The first sentence states that csirt:ID "provides an exposure point for =
an identifier ...". What is an "exposure point"? Is that a unique referen=
ce?
** Also, the first sentence states "... identifier from the indicator or in=
cident document". What is an "indicator" or "incident document" in this co=
ntent?

(12) Section 8.1.1, Newly registered category values
** The second sentence notes that "This IODEF content exposure provides ...=
" What is meant by "content exposure"?
** The second and third paragraphs make references to Section 3.2 of IODEF.=
  Which IODEF -- RFC 5070 or 7970?
** I'd recommend removing the attribute value examples (i.e., "e.g, public,=
need-to-know, private, default", "e.g. traceback, mitigation, reporting, o=
r other") as these may change with the extension values in the IANA registr=
y (assuming RFC7970 is the version of IODEF in question).

(13) Section 10, Security Considerations

** The first sentence states that this document is about "us[ing] ROLIE in =
high-security use cases". I'm not sure what "high security" means in this =
context.
** In the same sentence, it says that "added care should be taken to fortif=
y and secure ROLIE" -- like what?=20
** Per the second sentence, I recommend:
s/The guidance in the ROILE core specification ... is strongly recommended/=
The security and privacy considerations of the ROILE core specification [I-=
D.ietf-mile-roile] are applicable./
** In the same sentence, it says that "implementers should consider adding =
additional security measures as they see fit" -- like what?
** The first sentence of the second paragraph references "closed sharing". =
I'm not sure what that means.

Regards,
Roman

The Incident Object Description Exchange Format (IODEF) v2 (RFC7970)
defines a data representation that provides a framework for sharing
information about computer security incidents commonly exchanged by
Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) . Since the IODEF
model includes a wealth of available options that can be used to
describe a security incident or issue, it can be challenging for
security practitioners to develop tools that leverage IODEF for
incident sharing. This document provides guidelines for IODEF
implementers. It addresses how common security indicators can be
represented in IODEF and use-cases of how IODEF is being used. This
document aims to make IODEF's adoption by vendors easier and
encourage faster and wider adoption of the model by CSIRTs around the
   world.

This document is a product of the Managed Incident Lightweight Exchange Working Group of the IETF.
