This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your ietf.org mailing
list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how to use
it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, mailman-request@ietf.org) containing just the
word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent to
you with instructions.

The IESG has approved the following document:

- 'Experimental Message, Extension and Error Codes for Mobile IPv4 '
   <draft-ietf-mip4-experimental-messages-02.txt> as a Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the Mobility for IPv4 Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Thomas Narten and Margaret Wasserman.

Technical Summary.

This document defines experimental numbers for the Mobile IPv4
protocol in accordance with BCP 82, RFC 3692, "Assigning Experimental
and Testing Numbers Considered Useful". An experimental message,
experimental extensions (skippable and non-skippable) and experimental
  error codes are defined.

Working Group Summary

This document is the output of the MIP4 workgroup. The document has
been reviewed by workgroup members, and there is consensus to advance
  the draft.

Protocol Quality

This document has been reviewed for the workgroup by Henrik
Levkowetz, and for the IESG by Thomas Narten.

The document defines experimental numbers within the existing
numbering spaces already defined for the protocol, but no new
  protocol features.

Will wireless sensor networks be the next hot topic in the telecommunication
industry? Analysts agree that the promise of wearable consumer goods,
residential applications, and automotive network nodes is considerable.
Enabling technologies must be developed further and standards must be agreed
on in order to meet this demand. Will ZigBee play this role?

The ZigBee Conference will be held in Paris on 10 to 13 May 2005.

Technology evolution is driving toward a world of wireless,
mobile, and multimedia pervasive communications where users can
seamlessly and ubiquitously accomplish their tasks, access information
or communicate with other users all the anytime, everywhere, and from
any device. Technologies include, among others, IEEE 802.11,
802.15, 802.16, Mobile IP, micro-mobility protocols, IP paging,
wireless IP QOS, mobile ad hoc and sensor networks, and cellular
networks.
In addition to these, new and emerging technologies (e.g., UWB) need to
be taken into account. The resulting networking environment will
constitute the fourth generation wireless networks. 4G will integrate
different types of wireless networks with wire-line backbone network
seamlessly, and provide the convergence of voice, multimedia and
data traffic over a single IP based core network. WoWMoM 2005 technical
program committee is soliciting papers addressing the research
challenges
toward a world of wireless, mobile, and multimedia pervasive
communications.
Two types of contributions will be accepted:

FULL PAPERS: Full Papers must present original, previously unpublished,
complete works, validated by experimentation, simulation, or analysis.
Practical experiences and experimental efforts are welcome.

POSITION PAPERS: Papers in this category must be visionary, innovative
and forward-looking. They must offer new perspectives opening future
research directions, rather than by presenting mature work with
quantitative results. Only a limited number of slots will be available
for
position papers that will be reviewed primarily for relevance and
originality.

Topics of interest for WOWMOM 2005 include, but are not limited to:
- System prototypes and experiences
- Software technologies and systems
- QoS for real-time voice and video in wireless networks
- Interactive broadband television, gaming, and video distribution
- Middleware support for QoS provision
- Caching and content management in WLANs and WMANs
- Differentiated service in wireless multimedia networks
- IP-based multimedia services over wireless networks
- Networking services for ambient intelligent and pervasive environments
- Multicasting and broadcasting problems and solutions
- Handoff and mobility management
- Seamless internetworking
- IP-based mobile networks
- Location mechanism and services
- Wireless BAN, PAN, LAN, and MAN
- Ad hoc and sensor networks
- Vehicular wireless networks
- Access technologies
- Third and fourth generation systems
- Energy-efficient protocols and power management
- Wireless security and authentication
- Pricing and billing
- Modeling and Performance evaluation

. What is the business model for WiMAX?
. What do we learn from earlier deployments?
. What about the future extensions of the standard?
. How is addressed the interoperability challenge?

These questions, among others, will be addressed during the second edition
of the WiMAX Summit, next April 5-8 2005, by distinguished experts and key
players in the field.

The call for proposal dead line has been extended to November 30.

The IESG has approved the following document:

- 'Problem Statement: Mobile IPv4 Traversal of VPN Gateways '
   <draft-ietf-mip4-vpn-problem-statement-03.txt> as an Informational RFC

This document is the product of the Mobility for IPv4 Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Thomas Narten and Margaret Wasserman.

Technical Summary

Deploying Mobile-IP v4 in networks which are connected to the
Internet through a VPN (Virtual Private Network) gateway presents
some problems which do not currently have well-described solutions.
This document aims to describe and illustrate these problems, and
propose some guidelines for possible solutions.

Working Group Summary

The document was produced by a design team under the mobile-ip WG,
and also received input from non-wg members. A security review was
done by Radia Perlman, and suggestions from that review incorporated
in the draft. I believe the draft has been sufficiently reviewed.

Protocol Quality

This document has been reviewed for the IESG by Thomas Narten.

Hi,

During the mip4 meeting today, both Vijay Devarapalli and
Espen Klovning offered to help out Sami Vaarala as co-editors of
draft-ietf-mobileip-vpn-problem-solution.

As it turns out that Espen is currently using the solution described
in the draft on a daily basis, and has experience with it, it seems
appropriate to appoint him as co-editor with Sami.

Many thanks to both Vijay and Espen for offering to take this on.

	Henrik and Pete

Hello folks,

The following transcript represents some discussion
between Kent Leung and myself. We were trying to resolve
our differences on the issue of whether to prohibit the
inclusion of the Foreign-Home Authentication Extension
on what could be called "remote deregistration" messages.
We were asked to take the discussion to the mailing list,
and so here I forward Kent's last note to me (I hope Kent
does not mind!). It's a bit too terse to get the points
without having participated in at least the recent WG
meeting, but I hope it's clear enough at least for those
who are most interested.

Descriptive. These are the cases that I can think of when the CoA field
in the RRQ is not what FA advertised. Although not what FA advertised,
the CoA is legitimate. First case is when MN is deregistering a previous
CoA on a previous FA using the current FA. This can happen when
simultaneous bindings are supported and MN wants to deregister one
of the bindings which it no longer is attached. The other case is when
FA is advertising the R bit and MN is in collocated CoA mode. The CoA
in the RRQ will not be what FA advertised in the CoA fields.

So this is about the current FA that is relaying the RRQ from the MN.
Just happens that the CoA in the RRQ is not the FA's. Trying to point
out the cases when this can legitimately happen.

Looking at RFC 3344, looks like this check is already covered?

Hi Charlie. Don't mind.

The issue is a bit more generic than just remote deregistration IMHO.
I think if we use the logic that if the CoA in the RRQ is the
agent advertisements, then the FA MUST NOT append the FHAE when
relaying the RRQ to the HA, even if security association exists.
This ensures that the HA will be able to authenticate the RRQ using
the security association with the FA when FHAE is appended. The lookup
of the FA is based on either the CoA or the source IP address of the RRQ.
Note that the source IP address may be NAT'ed.

Comments?

Can you supply some text that works for this, while still not mentioning
NAT? It seems to me that we can make the right text, but that the
NAT problems should be reserved for discussion elsewhere. Otherwise,
we might be opening a too-big can of worms for the specification under
consideration.

Also, from a previous note:

O.K. Should I insert wording to the effect:
"Otherwise, the Home Agent and Foreign Agent follow the specification
      in sections 3.8.2.1 and 3.7.3.1." ...?

Charlie P.

Right.

OK. Will do.

Something like this OK?

"Note that the source IP address of the received RRQ may not be the
original sender's IP address."

Not sure if this is redundant. There's no new operation on the receiver of the
registrations. So do we even need the references? I think if we just
say what's different on the FA and explain why, the rest of processing is
assumed. Having this text or not is fine with me.

I had a request at IETF 61 to post a link to this paper.

Wireless Networking allows electronic posting of papers currently in process
to be published. The following URL:

http://www.geocities.com/kempf42/fmipv4-wireless-networking-revised-posted.pdf

describes the work with the Low Latency draft algorithms (not FMIPv4 as the
filename would suggest) and a few other handover algorithms that utilize
link triggers. The paper describes extensive measurements of the Prereg and
Postreg algorithms implemented on a wireless emulator, a cdma2K prototype
system, and 802.11, in addition to optimized standard Mobile IP and an
algorithm we came up with called Post-MIT which is roughly similar to the
FMIPv4 algorithm described in Charlie and Rajeev's draft.

Thanks for this, James.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Mobility for IPv4 Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Mobile IPv4 Regional Registration
	Author(s)	: E. Gustafsson, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-mip4-reg-tunnel-00.txt
	Pages : 40
	Date : 2004-11-23

Using Mobile IP, a mobile node registers with its home agent each
time it changes care-of address. If the distance between the visited
network and the home network of the mobile node is large, the
signaling delay for these registrations may be long. This document
describes a new kind of 'regional' registrations, i.e. registrations
local to the visited domain. The regional signaling is performed via
a new network entity called a Gateway Foreign Agent and introduces a
layer of hierarchy in the visited domain. Regional registrations
reduce the number of signaling messages to the home network, and
reduce the signaling delay when a mobile node moves from one foreign
agent to another within the same visited domain. This document is an
optional extension to the Mobile IPv4 protocol.

type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-mip4-reg-tunnel-00.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-mip4-reg-tunnel-00.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

PLEASE ACCEPT OUR APOLOGIES IF YOU RECEIVE MULTIPLE COPIES

                            CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications
                  MOBILE ROUTERS AND NETWORK MOBILITY

  http://www.argreenhouse.com/society/J-SAC/Calls/mobile_routers.html

Network mobility support is concerned with managing the mobility of an
entire network that is changing its point of attachment to the Internet
and thus its reachability in the Internet topology. If network mobility
is not explicitly supported by some mechanisms, existing sessions break
and connectivity to the global Internet is lost. A mobile network is
composed of Mobile Router(s) (MR) and Mobile Network Nodes (MNN) that
can be fixed or mobile. There has been rapid development in network
mobility support, i.e., providing Internet connectivity to the networks
that move using mobile routers since the inception of Mobile IPv4 in
1996. Seamless Internet access in public transportation such as in
trains and busses can be possible if mobile routers are used. Cars with
low-power sensors seamlessly connected to the Internet constitute yet
another example of networks which move. To date, some airline companies
announced Internet connectivity support during commercial flights and
this trend is expected to accelerate and cover most if not all flights.

This issue is focused on modeling, analysis, and simulation of network
mobility support protocols. We solicit papers presenting original and
unpublished work including, but not limited to the following topics:

* Modeling and Analysis of Network Mobility
o Modeling, analysis and simulation of mobile router
    o Protocols for route optimization
o Mobility issues inside a mobile network
o Mobile IPv6 extensions for route optimization
    o Nested mobile networks
    o Multihomed mobile networks
o Operational issues to deploy mobile networks
    o Auto-configuration for mobile networks
o Mobile router support on cellular phone platforms

* Services in the Networks that Move
o Service advertisement and discovery protocols in networks that
      move
o Specifications and models of services for network mobility
o Encryption and authentication in service access for network
      mobility

* Security Issues in Network Mobility
o Security analysis of present network mobility support protocols
o Applications of AAA and EAP to network mobility
o Interaction with security-enhanced modules in other layers
(vertically) or other middle boxes (horizontally)

Prospective authors should follow the IEEE J-SAC manuscript format
described in the Information for Authors. Authors MUST submit their
draft manuscripts through the EDAS peer review website, together with a
short abstract (approximately 150 words) in the EDAS website form.
Please note potential authors should create their own accounts through
the EDAS peer review website before submitting manuscript(s). EDAS will
accept manuscripts in PDF format only. There will be one round of
reviewers and acceptance will be limited to those papers requiring only
moderate revisions. The following timetable applies:

Manuscript Submission: JUNE 1, 2005
Acceptance Notification: December 1, 2005
Final Manuscript Due: March 1, 2006
Publication: 3rd Quarter 2006

MobiQuitous 2005 CALL FOR PAPERS
The Second Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous
Systems: Networking and Services http://www.mobiquitous.org
July 15-17 2005, San Diego, California
(ACM and IEEE Sponsorship Pending)

The combination of mobile and ubiquitous computing is emerging as a
promising new paradigm with the goal to provide computing and
communication services all the time, everywhere, transparently and
invisibly to the user, using devices embedded in the surrounding physical
environment. In this context, the communication devices, the objects with
which they interact, or both may be mobile. The implementation of such a
paradigm requires advances in wireless network technologies and devices,
development of infrastructures supporting cognitive environments, and
discovery and identification of ubiquitous computing applications and
services. The second Annual International Conference on Mobile and
Ubiquitous Systems: networking and services (Mobiquitous-05) will cover
all these aspects, representing a forum where practitioners and
researchers coming from the many areas involved in ubiquitous solutions
design and deployment will be able to interact exchanging the cross-layer
experiences needed to build the overall ubiquitous systems. Areas
addressed by the conference include: applications, service-oriented
computing, middleware, networking, agents, knowledge management and
databases.

PAPERS: Technical papers describing original, previously unpublished
research, not currently under review by another conference or journal, are
solicited. The conference is interested in contributions addressing all
the areas associated with mobile and ubiquitous architectures,
infrastructure and services. Technical works clearly identifying how the
specific contributions fit to an overall working solution are particularly
of interest. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Ubiquitous architectures and systems
* Wearable computing and personal area network
* Wireless technologies for mobile and ubiquitous (Bluetooth, ZigBee,
802.15.x, WiFi)
* Incentive-based deployment of ad hoc networks
* Reconfigurability and personalization of wireless network
* Service discovery mechanisms, knowledge discovery, matching and
composition mechanisms
* Wireless/mobile service management and delivery
* Security, privacy and social issues of mobile and ubiquitous systems
* Peer-to-peer knowledge management
* Emerging industrial/business scenarios
* Multimodal interfaces (speech, video kinetic, tactile)
* Smart spaces
* Ad hoc and sensor networking
* Localization and tracking
* Context and location aware application
* Multimedia encoding and transcoding
* Middleware services
* Agent technologies in ubiquitous, wearable, and mobile systems
* Hardware and software platforms for ubiquitous systems, and testbeds
* User interfaces
* Toolkits, development environments, and languages for ubiquitous
computing
* Ontologies for mobile and ubiquitous computing

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled
electronically (see the conference web page for details). Authors should
prepare a Portable Document Format (PDF) or postscript version of their
full paper. Papers must not exceed 8 pages double column (US Letter size,
8.5 x 11 inches) including text, figures and references. The font size
must be at least 10 points. The deadline for registering the title and the
abstract of the paper with our electronic submission system is February 2,
2005. The deadline for submitting the actual paper is February 9, 2005.
All deadlines are 11:59PM PST.

PUBLICATION: All submitted papers will be rigorously reviewed by technical
program committee members. Accepted papers will be published in the
conference proceedings. Papers of particular merit will be proposed for
publication in a ACM/Kluwer MONET special issue.

WORKSHOPS: Proposals for one-day workshops to be held in conjunction with
the conference are solicited. A maximum of 2 pages should be submitted
which include the workshop name, its scope and a list of topic of
interests. Proposals should be submitted to both the Workshop co-Chairs
by December 17 2004.

DEMOS: Proposals for research and industrial demos are solicited. A
maximum of 2 pages should be submitted which include a description of the
demo and needed resources from the conference organizers. Proposals should
be submitted to Dr. Ramiro Liscano (Demo Chair) rliscano@ieee.org by May
29th, 2005.
