I support the advancement of this document to the IESG with a request for publication as a Proposed Standard RFC when the following comment is addressed.

- The issue about foreign agent care of mode must be clarified.

As it is now, it's ambiguous whether foreign agent care of mode is supported with the mechanisms in this document. Further, if it is supported, if it's mandatory double tunneling or something like draft-ietf-mip4-nemov4-fa that applies.

Sorry for being late

best regards

Hasse, ChristopheJ, thanks for the follow-up.

How about this introductory text:
> This document describes protocol extensions to Mobile IPv4 as per
> [RFC3344] and its update [2], to enable support for Mobile Networks.
> This draft addresses mainly the co-located Care-of Address mode.
> Foreign Agent Care-of Address mode (with 'legacy' Foreign Agents, RFC
> 3344) are supported but without optimization, double encapsulation

Instead of:
> This document describes protocol extensions to Mobile IPv4
> ([RFC3344]) to enable support for Mobile Networks. This draft
> addresses only co-located Care-of Address mode (not Foreign Agent
> Care-of Address mode, for which the gentle reader is directed to
> [1]).

And this (check last 3 lines):
> This document specifies an additional tunnel between Mobile Router's
> Home Address and the Home Agent. This tunnel is encapsulated within
> the normal tunnel between the Care-of Address (CoA) and Home Agent.
> In Foreign Agent CoA mode, the tunnel between the Mobile Router and

> decapsulated packet to the proper visiting Mobile Router. However,
> in Collocated CoA mode, the additional tunnel is not essential and

Instead of (check last 3 lines):
> This document specifies an additional tunnel between Mobile Router's
> Home Address and the Home Agent. This tunnel is encapsulated within
> the normal tunnel between the Care-of Address (CoA) and Home Agent.
> In Foreign Agent CoA mode, the tunnel between the Mobile Router and

> in Collocated CoA mode, the additional tunnel is not essential and

Finally, if the following paragraph disturbs then I can remove it
altogether:
> For optimization, the Home Agent SHOULD only encapsulate the packet
> with the tunnel header (source IP address set to Home Agent and
> destination IP address set to CoA) for Collocated CoA mode.

Is there any other text occurence that disturbs?

Alex

I agree. I guess this addresses quite well the issue I raised.

OK.

I am fine with this text and keeping it inside the draft.

Thanks

Usually no, I don't remember having seen an RFC with references to
drafts, or not common. During later editing steps we could either
remove that "for which the gentle reader is directed to [1]" or replace
it with something else; let's watch that space.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the Mobility for IPv4 Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Dual Stack Mobile IPv4
	Author(s)	: G. Tsirtsis, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-mip4-dsmipv4-05.txt
	Pages : 27
	Date : 2007-10-4

This specification provides IPv6 extensions to the Mobile IPv4
protocol. The extensions allow a dual stack node to use IPv4 and
IPv6 home addresses as well as to move between IPv4 and dual stack
   network infrastructures.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-mip4-dsmipv4-05.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of
the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the
username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then
"get draft-ietf-mip4-dsmipv4-05.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-mip4-dsmipv4-05.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the Mobility for IPv4 Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Network Mobility (NEMO) Extensions for Mobile IPv4
	Author(s)	: K. Leung, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base-02.txt
	Pages : 19
	Date : 2007-9-12

This document describes a protocol for supporting Mobile Networks
between a Mobile Router and a Home Agent by extending the Mobile IPv4
protocol. A Mobile Router is responsible for the mobility of one or
more network segments or subnets moving together. The Mobile Router
hides its mobility from the nodes on the mobile network. The nodes
on the Mobile Network may be fixed in relationship to the Mobile
Router and may not have any mobility function.

Extensions to Mobile IPv4 are introduced to support Mobile Networks.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of
the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the
username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then
"get draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base-02.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base-02.txt".

Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Folks, don't worry, I've submitted today the 4th version of NEMOv4 for
MIP4 WG. I think it will be announced next week sometime. It contains
the latest modifications we've discussed.

Since this is only an informative reference, using a draft as a =
reference is fine and should have no impact on getting published as an =
RFC. So, I don't think we need to revise the text.=20

	Filename	: draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base-04.txt
	Pages : 18
	Date : 2007-10-15

This document describes a protocol for supporting Mobile Networks
between a Mobile Router and a Home Agent by extending the Mobile IPv4
protocol. A Mobile Router is responsible for the mobility of one or
more network segments or subnets moving together. The Mobile Router
hides its mobility from the nodes on the mobile network. The nodes
on the Mobile Network may be fixed in relationship to the Mobile
Router and may not have any mobility function.

Extensions to Mobile IPv4 are introduced to support Mobile Networks.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base-04.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of
the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the
username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then
"get draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base-04.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base-04.txt".

Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Mobility for IPv4 Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Network Mobility (NEMO) Extensions for Mobile IPv4
	Author(s) : K. Leung, et al.
	Filename : draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base-05.txt
	Pages : 18
	Date : 2007-10-29

This document describes a protocol for supporting Mobile Networks
between a Mobile Router and a Home Agent by extending the Mobile IPv4
protocol. A Mobile Router is responsible for the mobility of one or
more network segments or subnets moving together. The Mobile Router
hides its mobility from the nodes on the mobile network. The nodes
on the Mobile Network may be fixed in relationship to the Mobile
Router and may not have any mobility function.

Extensions to Mobile IPv4 are introduced to support Mobile Networks.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the
username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base-05.txt".

Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Filename: draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base
Revision: 06
Title: Network Mobility (NEMO) Extensions for Mobile IPv4
Creation_date: 2007-10-31
WG ID: mip4
Number_of_pages: 19

Abstract:
This document describes a protocol for supporting Mobile Networks
between a Mobile Router and a Home Agent by extending the Mobile IPv4
protocol. A Mobile Router is responsible for the mobility of one or
more network segments or subnets moving together. The Mobile Router
hides its mobility from the nodes on the mobile network. The nodes
on the Mobile Network may be fixed in relationship to the Mobile
Router and may not have any mobility function.

Extensions to Mobile IPv4 are introduced to support Mobile Networks.

	Filename : draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base-06.txt
	Pages : 19
	Date : 2007-10-31

This document describes a protocol for supporting Mobile Networks
between a Mobile Router and a Home Agent by extending the Mobile IPv4
protocol. A Mobile Router is responsible for the mobility of one or
more network segments or subnets moving together. The Mobile Router
hides its mobility from the nodes on the mobile network. The nodes

Extensions to Mobile IPv4 are introduced to support Mobile Networks.

the message.

to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the
username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base-06.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base-06.txt".

Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Hi Alex,

You probably remember draft-tsirtsis-nemov4-fa-01. When the draft become
a WG doc it became draft-mip4-nemov4-fa-00 which I now see it is
expired. I will resubmit before the Vancouver deadline. Now the base
draft is done I will pick this up again and see if we can progress it.

Thanks
George

Dear iesg-secretary,

This is a request to advance the document
draft-ietf-mip4-nemo-v4-base-06.txt
to Proposed Standard RFC status. Please see the questionnaire answers
below.

Document shepherd: Pete McCann
I have reviewed this version of the I-D and believe it is ready for=20
IESG review and publication.

The draft has been reviewed extensively by the working group, but
has not gotten much exposure to non-WG members. I have no concern
about the depth or breadth of the reviews.

Perhaps the draft would benefit by some review from the Routing
Area, due to its mention of running dynamic routing protocols
over the tunnel between MN and HA. Hopefully this can happen=20
as part of IETF last call.

I have no areas of concern. No disclosures relating to the draft
have been filed at this time. However, there is a rumor that one
company does indeed hold IPR on the solution.

> (1.e) How solid is the WG consensus behind this document? Does it

There is strong WG consensus to advance the document. Consensus to
advance it was exhibited during WGLC.

(It

No appeals have been threatened.

No nits were found during automatic checking or manual inspection.
The document does have 2 informative references to drafts, which
should be published in the not-to-distant future.

The document split references into normative and informative sections.
No downrefs exist in the normative references section.

The IANA considerations section is in the document and is complete.
The document creates two new number spaces, each with an assignment
policy of "Expert Review." We have not yet designated an Expert,
but will confer with the ADs soon.

No such formal languages are used.

Technical Summary

This document defines some new extensions to Mobile IPv4 that
allow the Mobile Node to communicate with the Home Agent about
additional network prefixes that it may serve in the capacity
of a Mobile Router. A Mobile Router can be used to provide
connectivity and mobility to an entire mobile network without
any modification to other nodes in the mobile network.

While it is technically possible to create a Mobile Router through
static configuration, this extension allows the network prefixes
to be signaled in Registration Request and Reply messages, so that
the MN and HA can be explicit about which networks are requested
and granted to the Mobile Router.

Working Group Summary

The working group made some recent changes to indicate that this
is just an extension to the Mobile IPv4 protocol, rather than a
new mobility management protocol. The document went through last
call without any major disagreements coming up.

Document Quality

The document was reviewed for quality by Pete McCann.

This document adapts the Mobile IPv6 Fast Handovers to improve delay
and packet loss resulting from Mobile IPv4 handover operations.
Specifically, this document addresses movement detection, IP address
configuration, and location update latencies during a handover. For
reducing the IP address configuration latency, the document proposes
that the new Care-of Address is always made to be the new access
router's IP address. This memo defines an Experimental Protocol for
the Internet community.

This document is a product of the Mobility for IPv4
Working Group of the IETF.

EXPERIMENTAL: This memo defines an Experimental Protocol for the Internet
community. It does not specify an Internet standard of any kind. Discussion
and suggestions for improvement are requested. Distribution of this memo
