Dear MIP4,

I have just submitted a new draft titled

"Tunnel Type Change for Mobile IPv4 (TTC)"

http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-petrescu-mip4-tuntype-change-00

It describes a situation where some HA implementation has difficulty
with the change of tunnel of a Mobile Router: from IP-in-IP to IP-in-UDP
(MR changes its CoA between NAT and no-NAT).

Proposed solutions include: better HA implementation, better
specifications of Mobile IPv4 RFC5944, better NAT Traversal RFC, or
maybe a new extension TTC to the Registration Request, or a better Reply
Code (more detailed than just 64 "declined, reason unspecified").

As it stands now we are interested in comments on the problem, see
similar issues were experience elsewhere.

Comments appreciated,

Alex

Dear participants of the mip4 mailing-list,

I am a student doing research for my dissertation. In part of that research
I am looking for monitoring tools, specifically implemented for the Home
Agent. (MIB RFC2006) Or for Mobile IP suite.
So far I have only found general tools, as the HP NNMi, Nagios, OpenNMS,
Cacti, Munin, NetMRG. And a framework for massive SNMP polling named Torrus.

I have done some research on Cisco ASA and Juniper's Steel-Belted Radius
Mobile IP Module. But I have been unsuccessful in determining if they have
implemented software to display the MIB structure in RFC 2006 in other forms
than in a router CLI.
I would be very grateful, if anyone could answer my question of:

 - Is there is any tools which is designed specifically to monitor and
display, in for example a web interface, the information from the data
objects in RFC 2006?

Kind regards,

T.S.Lura.

For the HA implementation "dynamics" there is a dynha_tool which is CLI
and shows the egistrations.

For SNMP - I suppose if I google I can find a large number of open
source SNMP tools showing contents of databases, like the "Free MIB
Browser".

I am also interested whether there exists an RFC2006-specific (rfc2006
"MIB for MIP") monitoring tool freely available.

Okay,

Thank you for the feedback. It helped me.
I am currently working on a web gui interface which implements the RFC2006
which is to be freely available.
Its an simple solution build on Perl and the Perl Dancer web framework with
RRDtools. Which I have combined with a Java Script Mocha(UI) to spice it up
a bit.

If there is any interest I can post a link when the software is finished.

T.S.

Dear participants of the mip4 mailing-list,<br>

<br>
I am a student doing research for my dissertation. In part of that<br>

for the Home Agent. (MIB RFC2006) =A0Or for Mobile IP suite. So far I<br>

I've done an ops-dir review of draft-ietf-mip4-gre-key-extension-04.
The document defines procedures when using using GRE tunneling between
the mobile node or foreign agent and the home agent. GRE Key extention is
used as for disambiguation purposes to handle overlapping address space.

The specification appears to be clear enough, though it is actually
specifying more than the document title suggests e.g. by adding MUST
requirements for all foreign agent implementations.

As a general comment, I suppose this is expected to be used in controlled
environments only, because UDP encapsulation is already defined and does not
(AFAIK) have these issues, and GRE is not expected to traverse NATs. As such
this does not seem to be a very long-term solution.

As an operational comment, I know many hardware GRE tunneling
implementations don't support GRE keying in hardware. Maybe this is not a
concern here.

substantial issues
------------------

The document title is a bit misleading. This document not only specifies MIP
GRE key extension, but seems to be specifying how Foreign Agent (FA) MUST
act when either the foreign agent or mobile node wants to use GRE tunneling.
This document includes MUST requirements also for Foreign Agents that don't
implement GRE (S 4.1, fourth paragraph), and even if Key extension would
not be used (S 4.1-4.2). As such, Updates: RFC3344 should be required.
(Or, now Updates: RFC5944)

In essence, this seems to actually be a more specific "Encapsulation with
MIP4" specification.

As a result, it would be nice if the scope of the document was laid out
more clearly.

Nits:
-----

  - Abstract is a bit verbose and mostly copy-paste from Introduction.
  - in S 4.1, reference [X.S0011-D] does not seem to exist in the references
    section.
  - RFC3344 has been obsoleted by RFC5944

Networks (WoWMoM 2011). Doctoral students working in areas related to
wireless, mobile and multimedia networking are solicited to submit an=20
extended abstract comprising a summary of their research findings, work
in progress and planned research. The forum will be a platform for PhD
students to interact both with their peers as well as experienced re-
searchers from industry. The forum will be organized as a poster session=20=

and will include a '1-minute madness' introduction by each student.

Current Ph.D. students are encouraged to submit extended abstracts. The
Ph.D. student should be the sole author, although contributions of the
advisor and others may be acknowledged in the extended abstract. Sub-
missions will be reviewed to ensure quality and relevance. Authors of=20
accepted submissions are expected to attend WoWMoM 2011 and present =
their
poster at the PhD Forum. The best presentation at the Forum will receive
a sponsored award, and there is likely to be travel assistance for some
students. Accepted extended abstracts will appear in conference
proceedings.

Extended Abstract Submission: Ph.D. students are invited to submit two-
page extended abstracts that describe current research and potential =
con-
tributions to theory and innovation in mobile and wireless =

munications, multimedia on mobile networks and closely related areas.=20
Submissions must be received by no later than March 25, 2011. Extended
abstracts should include the author's name, affiliation, and email =

There will be a prize for the best PhD Forum extended abstract.
Submissions must be PDF files, written in English. Submissions should

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Mobility for IPv4 Working Group of the IETF.

Title : GRE Key Extension for Mobile IPv4
	Author(s) : P. Yegani, et al.
	Filename : draft-ietf-mip4-gre-key-extension-05.txt
	Pages : 10
	Date : 2011-03-28

The Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) specification contains a Key
field, which MAY contain a value that is used to identify a
particular GRE data stream. This specification defines a new Mobile
IP extension that is used to exchange the value to be used in the GRE
Key field. This extension further allows the Mobility Agents to set
up the necessary protocol interfaces prior to receiving the mobile's
traffic. The new extension allows a foreign agent to request GRE
tunneling without disturbing the Home Agent behavior specified for
Mobile IPv4. GRE tunneling with the Key field allows the operators
to have home networks that consist of multiple Virtual Private
Networks (VPNs), which may have overlapping home addresses. When the
tuple < Care of Address, Home Address and Home Agent Address > is the
same across multiple subscriber sessions, GRE tunneling will provide
a means for the Foreign Agent and Home Agent to identify data streams
for the individual sessions based on the GRE key. In the absence of
this key identifier, the data streams cannot be distinguished from
each other, a significant drawback when using IP-in-IP tunneling.
