Shouldn't multimob work also consider security aspect for securing
IGMP/MLD where MN does not have a pre-established security association
with the visited network?

Sooner or later any mobility-related signaling without security will
become an issue. At least I would like to see some discussion as to
whether multimob work can just rely on L2 security or should have its
own security mechanism.

IMO, this is a different problem that should be addressed by a separate
effort, "IGMP/MLD security".

If there were some *-cast to secure for mobility, I think it could also
be anycast such that Mobile IPv6 DHAAD operation is secure (DHAAD
Request message is sent to a anycast address and sometimes IPsec may
probably not like it; happily though DHAAD Reply is unicast to unicast.)

Just a thought,

FYI -- this document was on the IESG telechat a few weeks ago for the
does-not-conflict-with-WG-efforts check. The IESG had no problem in
publishing it.

However, I also read the document for its technical content and wanted
post a personal opinion, as well as copy you on the some comments that
we received from other ADs during the review.

Basically, I believe the specification of the interface is not detailed
enough to be implemented in the general case. Not that this is a
requirement for research work, but I hope no one thinks the work is now
done.

For example, even after re-reading the document and its appendix, it is
unclear to me how the document proposes dealing with the intricacies
related to what it means to be associated with a wireless end point. In
802.11 having an association, having completed EAP/RSN, and having a
working IP interface are all different things. Presumably one would
prefer getting an indication when authentication and all required link
layer tasks complete, but the document does not say this. Link layer
fast handoff designs, web authentication, firewalls, etc complicate this
further.

Another example is the use of the link quality indicators. They appear
simple, but their use is far from trivial. Would you move from FAIR
802.11n to EXCELLENT 802.11b? What about BAD 802.11 to GOOD GPRS?

To be usable the interfaces would have to have many of these details
worked out. For instance, RFC 4957 focused on one event for one purpose,
and it turned out that the interactions are far from trivial.

In addition, Tim Polk was not convinced that the points raised in IAB
link indications document were adequately addressed. For example,
iab-link-indications notes for spoofing attacks: "However, even where
the link layer incorporates security, attacks may still be possible if
the security model is not consistent." Yet this document addresses
spoofing with a single sentence: " "Our proposal is nor more insecure
than a particular link layer on which it is implemented". These
statements appear to be a contradiction. Tim believed that the
treatment of spoofing
and denial of service should be expanded in the security considerations
section to clearly demonstrate the issues raised in iab-link-indications
have been fully addressed.

Also, Dan Romascanu had questions about the usage or some link layer
specific terms. For example he was not sure whether the LinkUp and
LinkDown terms are aligned with the RFC 2863 terminology.

Finally, some editorial issues:

The document would probably benefit from a reference to RFC 4957.

Draft-iab-link-indications has been published as RFC 4907.

Author's name in [7] should be "Aboba", not "Adoba".

Jari

Dear Authors,

please address Jari's comments. I see at least two directions:

1. provide clarifications and add some descriptions about the
interface Jari is referring to. I know you have built a working
system. So, it should be relatively straightforward to provide some
additional description.

2. Identify what needs further work or could be improved.

Perhaps you can do both 1) and 2).

Jari: I hope we can do this during the AUTH48 stage. Anything else
that requires further work is perhaps another ID I guess.

Regards,

-Rajeev

Dear Rajeev Koodli and Jari Arkko,

We will revise the document at Rajeev's suggestion.
Since we don't have enough time now, please wait for
1 or 2 weeks.

Mobility in the Evolving Internet Architecture

Recent developments in wireless access technologies and mobile devices
are beginning to make widespread user, terminal and network mobility a
reality in the commercial Internet. At the same time, the Internet
architecture struggles to incorporate the functionality that will =20
sustain
this increasingly more mobile and more dynamic Internet use. Efficient
mobility management and mobility optimizations, locator-identifier
splits, multihoming, security and related network operation and
management functions are still in the early stages of development. It =20=

is,
however, already clear that supporting widespread mobility poses to
significantly impact the original end-to-end design of the Internet.

At the same time, critical momentum is building to significantly revise
or even replace the current Internet architecture. Several substantial
Future Internet initiatives have started in Europe, the US and Asia, and
the topic is also actively being discussed in the vendor and network
operator communities. These Future Internet efforts offer the exciting
opportunity to design radically different approaches to supporting host
and network mobility and multihoming, and may eventually lead to an
internetwork architecture with significantly more advanced mobility
features than those that the piecemeal extensions of the current =20
Internet
protocols result in.

MobiArch'08 welcomes submissions from both researchers and practitioners
that explore recent advances in architectures, protocols and emerging
technologies to enable mobility and multihoming in the Internet, as well
as concepts and designs to support widespread mobility and multihoming =20=

in
future internetworks. Early results, position papers, systems and
measurement papers are particularly welcome.

TOPICS

MobiArch'08 covers all aspects related to mobility in the current and
future Internet, including, but not limited to:

  * Architectures and protocols for mobility support at all layers
of the Internet protocol stack, as well as cross-layer approaches

  * Novel concepts to support widespread mobility and multihoming
    in a Future Internet

  * Routing and addressing issues (including locator/identifier
splits) and their impact on the Internet architecture

  * Multihoming, including flow distribution and load-sharing for
    wireless and mobility

  * Performance evaluation, experimentation and modeling of
    Internet mobility

  * Models for mobility patterns and their experimental validation

  * New wireless technologies and services and their impact on the
    Internet architecture

  * Location management, positioning and data management for
    wireless and mobility

  * Accounting, access control, security and privacy issues and
their impact on the Internet architecture

  * Social, economic, scalability and deployment issues

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Submissions must be no longer than six pages, including all figures and
references, must be in PDF format, and must follow the ACM formatting
guidelines (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates).
Submissions that do not adhere to these requirements will be rejected
without further review.

Peer review is single-blind; the authors names and affiliations are to =20=

be
included on the submission. Submissions cannot be previously published =20=

or
be under concurrent review elsewhere. The submission of position papers
is encouraged; please clearly identify position papers as such when
submitting.

Papers may be submitted at http://edas.info/newPaper.php?c=3D6140
