This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your ietf.org mailing
list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how to use
it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, mailman-request@ietf.org) containing just the
word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent to
you with instructions.

If you have questions, problems, comments, etc, send them to
mailman-owner@ietf.org. Thanks!

Hello all,

We have updated the multihoming optimization draft. Changes include:
* Added Section for "Multihomed MN"
* Re-organized "Multihomed CN" and added discussion on mitigating
   the security threats

This basically covers the feedback received after presentation, and
added the whole new major section on multihomed mobile nodes. Do take a
read, and provide more feedback. Thanks!

Subject: I-D Action:draft-ng-mobopts-multihoming-01.txt
Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2008 06:15:01 -0800 (PST)

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

Title : On Mobile IPv6 Optimization and Multihoming
	Author(s) : C. Ng, K. Aso
	Filename : draft-ng-mobopts-multihoming-01.txt
	Pages : 19
	Date : 2008-02-16

This memo explores the possible areas of extensions to MIPv6 route
optimization in the considerations of multihomed nodes. The
intention is to raise awareness in the research community, leading to
a possible extension to RFC 4651.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ng-mobopts-multihoming-01.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of
the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the
username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After
logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ng-mobopts-multihoming-01.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ng-mobopts-multihoming-01.txt".

NOTE: The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Dear all,

we just updated the problem statement ID:

"Multicast Mobility in MIPv6: Problem Statement and Brief Survey"

Abstract

This document discusses current mobility extensions to IP layer
multicast. Problems arising from mobile group communication in
general, in the case of multicast listener mobility and for mobile
Any Source Multicast as well as Source Specific Multicast senders are
documented. Characteristic aspects of multicast routing and
deployment issues for fixed IPv6 networks are summarized. Specific
properties and interplays with the underlying network access are
surveyed w.r.t. the relevant technologies in the wireless domain. It
outlines the principal approaches to multicast mobility. In addition
to providing a comprehensive exploration of the mobile multicast
problem and solution space, this document attempts to draft a
conceptual roadmap for initial steps in standardization for the use
of future mobile multicast protocol designers.

It should be on the ID directory soon:

http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-irtf-mobopts-mmcastv6-ps-03

but may be immediately downloaded from:

http://www.realmv6.org/papers/draft-irtf-mobopts-mmcastv6-ps-03.txt

This version is a major update, including

  * the outcome of the extensive discussions at Vancouver
  * a new section on multicast tunneling issues
  * a real lot of editorial improvements, which are mainly due to a very
    thorough review by Gorry Fairhurst.

The document seems to converge - it is our intention to provide another =

update shortly after Philadelphia to fill some gaps.

Please all, provide your comments and help us work towards finalization =

- to arrive at a high quality problem reference for this hot, but quite =

involved area of Mobile Multicast.

Best regards,

thomas

Hi Suresh & Behcet,

just some quick comments on your new ID:

  * first of all the obvious: this is not exactly hitting the basic =

problems identified in the Vancouver meeting. So the question would be, =

why do you propose to proceed otherwise?

  * second I'm thinking about the ID itself: Mobile multicast always =

faces the problems of two complex worlds, mobility & multicast. Very =

easily one is tempted to come up with a neat solution, which then turns =

out to be in conflict with either one of the two paradigms. In cutting =

the problem space short, there is significant danger of turning away =

from those problems, which are hidden but harmful.

Some more details:

  * In your sample scenario (figure 1) you seem to draw a layer2-only
handover. In this case, the problem reduces to the MIH-context
transfer problem (cf. section 4.3 in [1]).

  * The statement "When a mobile node joins a multicast group, it
uses its home address to do so." (sect. 4.2) is not generally true.
For Mcast listeners I would rather suspect the opposite, the use of
CoA as the more common use case.

*  The statement
"The currently available multicast protocols were designed based on
the receivers being fixed nodes with large processing capacities.
[...] They also potentially involve extensive computation
capabilities on the nodes." (sect. 4.)
appears generally wrong to my ears. Actually, 'normal' multicast
admits a rather lightweight interface at the client side - it's a
UDP socket option. I haven't measure system resources, but an MLDv1
Mcast socket poses probably less load than a TCP socket.
It is about zero as compared to a full-screen H.264 decoder :-)

  * A repeat on MLD-light: This cuts off the selective exclude, which
addresses basically a layer 2 issue. Routers in SSM do have
source-selective group membership tables anyway, but switches do not.
This does not seem mobility-related, as a wireless L2 operates on a
shared medium - thus an exclude of selective receivers would not save
    bandwidth.

  * Another word about the MLD problem: To my understanding, there are
two established mechanisms, the explicit host tracking and the
attendance mode, which solve the (rather minor) issues. Per-host
tracking is discussed as an option in RFC 3810, attendance today is
implemented for IPTV on the application layer together with a fast
(video) frame recovery (cf. section 5.2.4 in [1]).

Elsewise: What are the plans for Philadelphia? We might find the time to =

write down some solution draft from the pipe ... at least we can =

contribute in a meeting: any specific plans?

Cheers & best regards,

Thomas

This document is just an attempt to have a high level view of the
problem space. This document has no official standing at all (nor will
it ever). It will be used to gauge interest in what problems people are
interested in solving right now. There was no such understanding (of
what to do) achieved in Vancouver. The other problem statement drafts
(including yours) will be the ones that will define the precise problems
to be solved.

Agree. But do you see anything in the draft that suggests doing so?

This draft was not designed to be a detailed problem statement. I would
like the other problem statement drafts to cover the details. Other than
the details, do you agree that the problems listed in this document
cover the problem space?

Jari has offered us a room to meet in Philly. I would really love to see
  some solution drafts.

Thanks
Suresh

We will submit rev -02 soon with addressing the two issues discussed
in IETF70 relating to DAD and Router Discovery over proactive handover
tunnel. Once rev -02 is submitted I believe it is ready for LC.

A new version of I-D, draft-irtf-mobopts-mpa-framework-02.txt has been
successfuly submitted by Ashutosh Dutta and posted to the IETF repository.

Filename: draft-irtf-mobopts-mpa-framework
Revision: 02
Title: A Framework of Media-Independent Pre-Authentication (MPA) for
Inter- domain Handover Optimization
Creation_date: 2008-02-25
WG ID: Independent Submission
Number_of_pages: 61

Abstract:
This document describes a framework of Media-independent Pre-
Authentication (MPA), a new handover optimization mechanism that
addresses the issues on existing mobility management protocols and
mobility optimization mechanisms to support inter-domain handover.
MPA is a mobile-assisted, secure handover optimization scheme that
works over any link-layer and with any mobility management protocol
and is best applicable to support optimization during inter-domain
handover. MPA's pre-authentication, pre-configuration, and proactive
handover techniques allow many of the handoff related operations to
take place before the mobile has moved to the new network. We
describe the details of all the associated techniques and its
applicability for different scenarios involving various mobility
protocols during inter-domain handover.

Mobility in the Evolving Internet Architecture

                      An ACM SIGCOMM 2008 Workshop

Recent developments in wireless access technologies and mobile devices
are beginning to make widespread user, terminal and network mobility a
reality in the commercial Internet. At the same time, the Internet
architecture struggles to incorporate the functionality that will =

sustain
this increasingly more mobile and more dynamic Internet use. Efficient
mobility management and mobility optimizations, locator-identifier
splits, multihoming, security and related network operation and
management functions are still in the early stages of development. It =

is,
however, already clear that supporting widespread mobility poses to
significantly impact the original end-to-end design of the Internet.

At the same time, critical momentum is building to significantly revise
or even replace the current Internet architecture. Several substantial
Future Internet initiatives have started in Europe, the US and Asia, and
the topic is also actively being discussed in the vendor and network
operator communities. These Future Internet efforts offer the exciting
opportunity to design radically different approaches to supporting host
and network mobility and multihoming, and may eventually lead to an
internetwork architecture with significantly more advanced mobility
features than those that the piecemeal extensions of the current =

Internet
protocols result in.

MobiArch'08 welcomes submissions from both researchers and practitioners
that explore recent advances in architectures, protocols and emerging
technologies to enable mobility and multihoming in the Internet, as well
as concepts and designs to support widespread mobility and multihoming =

in
future internetworks. Early results, position papers, systems and
measurement papers are particularly welcome.

TOPICS

MobiArch'08 covers all aspects related to mobility in the current and
future Internet, including, but not limited to:

    * Architectures and protocols for mobility support at all layers
of the Internet protocol stack, as well as cross-layer approaches

    * Novel concepts to support widespread mobility and multihoming
      in a Future Internet

    * Routing and addressing issues (including locator/identifier
splits) and their impact on the Internet architecture

    * Multihoming, including flow distribution and load-sharing for
      wireless and mobility

    * Performance evaluation, experimentation and modeling of
      Internet mobility

    * Models for mobility patterns and their experimental validation

    * New wireless technologies and services and their impact on the
      Internet architecture

    * Location management, positioning and data management for
      wireless and mobility

    * Accounting, access control, security and privacy issues and
their impact on the Internet architecture

    * Social, economic, scalability and deployment issues
