Hello,

I happened to try to port the current linux mptcp code (ver 0.5) on my
nexus one as my hobby.
As far as I tried, it seems to be working. At least, I can see mptcp
options are used for tcp connections.

I put the kernel image which supports mptcp on
http://www.nishida.org/nexusone_mptcp/ with some instructions.

If you're interested, please try with your own risk.
Any comments and reports are welcome.

Thanks,

Hi,

we have played with a single-homed end-system in a multi-homed site using M=
PTCP and it works like a charm. Therefore, we have implemented an auto-conf=
iguration mechanism for it using DHCP and tested that one too. If the WG fe=
els that this is something useful we can present it. The work will ultimate=
ly need move to DHC but we first would like to know from the MPTCP group wh=
ether they feel it is useful. The draft can be found here:

http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-wr-mptcp-single-homed-00

Best,

Rolf

Definitely seems worthwhile to me.

On terminology - I don't think this is really an MP proxy. We've
talked privately about MPTCP proxies (so an MP client with multiple
paths can connect to a single-path TCP server), and such beasts would
be full transport-level proxies. What's talked about in your draft is
really a multi-address capability for DHCP rather than a proxy.

To get this functionality without multiple addresses we've talked
about setting up multiple subflows even with single-addressed hosts,
and relying on ECMP hashing different source ports differently. But
if you can deterministically choose different outgoing paths, that's
better.

 - Mark

Multipath TCP is a major extension to TCP that allows improving the
resource usage in the current Internet by transmitting data over
several TCP subflows, while still showing one single regular TCP
socket to the application. This document describes our experience in
writing a MultiPath TCP implementation in the Linux kernel and
discusses implementation guidelines that could be useful for other
developers who are planning to add MultiPath TCP to their networking
stack.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Multipath TCP Working Group of the IETF.

Title : MPTCP Application Interface Considerations
	Author(s) : M. Scharf, A. Ford
	Filename : draft-ietf-mptcp-api-01.txt
	Pages : 27
	Date : 2011-03-14

Multipath TCP (MPTCP) adds the capability of using multiple paths to
a regular TCP session. Even though it is designed to be totally
backward compatible to applications, the data transport differs
compared to regular TCP, and there are several additional degrees of
freedom that applications may wish to exploit. This document
summarizes the impact that MPTCP may have on applications, such as
changes in performance. Furthermore, it discusses compatibility
issues of MPTCP in combination with non-MPTCP-aware applications.
Finally, the document describes a basic application interface for
MPTCP-aware applications that provides access to multipath address
information and a level of control equivalent to regular TCP.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Multipath TCP Working Group of the IETF.

Title : TCP Extensions for Multipath Operation with Multiple Addresses
	Author(s) : A. Ford, et al.
	Filename : draft-ietf-mptcp-multiaddressed-03.txt
	Pages : 54
	Date : 2011-03-14

TCP/IP communication is currently restricted to a single path per
connection, yet multiple paths often exist between peers. The
simultaneous use of these multiple paths for a TCP/IP session would
improve resource usage within the network, and thus improve user
experience through higher throughput and improved resilience to
network failure.

Multipath TCP provides the ability to simultaneously use multiple
paths between peers. This document presents a set of extensions to
traditional TCP to support multipath operation. The protocol offers
the same type of service to applications as TCP (i.e. reliable
bytestream), and provides the components necessary to establish and
use multiple TCP flows across potentially disjoint paths.

Hi Michael, Thomas,

We've just revised our draft, taking your comments into account =
(thanks!).

The formula in the draft now is the same as in the referenced paper =
(this is our recently published NSDI 2011 paper); the formula works for =
CWND in bytes and matching the rate of the best TCP in B/s, or for CWND =
in packets and matching the rate of the best TCP in packets/s. The =
formula is simple as it does not include mss explicitly, as these are =
included implicitly in the way the window evolve.
In practice the mss values will not differ between paths, so we expect =
the slight mismatch between the two types of implementations won't =
matter; the mismatch is likely not worth the extra complexity of =
factoring in the mss.
=20
However, the draft signals the mismatch and shows how to compute alpha =
for packet-level stacks wanting to do B/s fairness.

Please let us know if this version is fine with you.

Cheers,

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Multipath TCP Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Coupled Congestion Control for Multipath Transport Protocols
	Author(s) : C. Raiciu, et al.
	Filename : draft-ietf-mptcp-congestion-02.txt
	Pages : 12
	Date : 2011-03-14

Often endpoints are connected by multiple paths, but communications
are usually restricted to a single path per connection. Resource
usage within the network would be more efficient were it possible for
these multiple paths to be used concurrently. Multipath TCP is a
proposal to achieve multipath transport in TCP.

New congestion control algorithms are needed for multipath transport
protocols such as Multipath TCP, as single path algorithms have a
series of issues in the multipath context. One of the prominent
problems is that running existing algorithms such as TCP New Reno
independently on each path would give the multipath flow more than
its fair share at a bottleneck link traversed by more than one of its
subflows. Further, it is desirable that a source with multiple paths
available will transfer more traffic using the least congested of the
paths, hence achieving resource pooling. This would increase the
overall efficiency of the network and also its robustness to failure.

This document presents a congestion control algorithm which couples
the congestion control algorithms running on different subflows by
linking their increase functions, and dynamically controls the
overall aggresiveness of the multipath flow. The result is a
practical algorithm that is fair to TCP at bottlenecks while moving
traffic away from congested links.

Hi all,

This is a significant diff in terms of text, but in terms of technical
content the main changes are as follows:

o Changed to using a single TCP option with a sub-type field.

o Merged Data Sequence Number, DATA ACK, and DATA FIN.

o Changed DATA FIN behaviour (separated from subflow FIN).

o Added crypto agility and checksum negotiation.

o Redefined MP_JOIN handshake to use only three TCP options.

   o Added pseudo-header to checksum.

o Added more discussion on heuristics.

The fundamental operation hasn't changed, but there are a lot of
improvements of neatness and behaviour clarifications.

It would be fantastic if we had any volunteers to review this before
Prague. It doesn't need to be a detailed review, but we are very keen to
receive feedback on readability as well as technical content.

Cheers,
Alan

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts

This draft is a work item of the Multipath TCP Working Group of the
IETF.

Title : TCP Extensions for Multipath Operation with
Multiple Addresses

Multipath TCP (MPTCP for short) describes the extensions proposed for
TCP so that endpoints of a given TCP connection can use multiple
paths to exchange data. Such extensions enable the exchange of
segments using different source-destination address pairs, resulting
in the capability of using multiple paths in a significant number of
scenarios. Some level of multihoming and mobility support can be
achieved through these extensions. However, the support for multiple
IP addresses per endpoint may have implications on the security of
the resulting MPTCP. This note includes a threat analysis for MPTCP.
This document is not an Internet Standards Track specification; it is
published for informational purposes.

This document is a product of the Multipath TCP Working Group of the IETF.

Hosts are often connected by multiple paths, but TCP restricts
communications to a single path per transport connection. Resource
usage within the network would be more efficient were these multiple
paths able to be used concurrently. This should enhance user
experience through improved resilience to network failure and higher
throughput.

This document outlines architectural guidelines for the development
of a Multipath Transport Protocol, with references to how these
architectural components come together in the development of a
Multipath TCP (MPTCP). This document lists certain high-level design
decisions that provide foundations for the design of the MPTCP
protocol, based upon these architectural requirements. This document
is not an Internet Standards Track specification; it is
published for informational purposes.

This document is a product of the Multipath TCP Working Group of the IETF.

Hi,
This starts a WG last call for the MPTCP WG's congestion control draft, htt=
p://tools.ietf.org/wg/mptcp/draft-ietf-mptcp-congestion/

Since we are near the IETF, we will run until 22nd April.

Thank-you to Michael T=FCxen and Michael Welzl for reviewing it from an ICC=
RG perspective, also Howard Tripp's review, and to Costin for updating it.

Best wishes,
Phil & Yoshifumi.

Abstract

Hello Rolf,

I've read the draft and I like the idea and believe it'll be useful.

However, I don't fully understand the purpose for new DHCP options yet.
If the server can send dhcp offers from different addresses
(correspond to ISPs) and
if the client can send dhcp request to each dhcp offer, I think it's
possible for the clients
to get multiple addresses from the server. Could you elaborate the
reason to not use this method?

Also, I'm wondering whether we always need to create virtual interface
since some OSs
allow us to assign multiple IP addresses on single interface.

Thanks,

Hi Yoshifumi,

if I understand you correctly, you suggest to simply send two DHCP offers f=
or a single request (like having two DHCP servers in the network) and the c=
lient, instead of discarding one, will accept both and use them for multipa=
th TCP. Is that correct?

That is possible but we had reasons to go with new options:

Say you already have a network with two DHCP servers, then the two offers (=
without any specific options) will not necessarily mean that you will get m=
ultipath out of them. That is not fatal from the MPTCP perspective, but not=
nice either and it is certainly not a behaviour that was anticipated when =
the two servers where deployed.

The new options give you the following benefit:

1) a DHCP server can tell that the client can do multi-path and give it the=
right information to ask for more addresses
2) a client can tell, even if multiple offers arrive which ones can be used=
for multi-path and can be certain that the different addresses will be rou=
ted over different networks.=20
3) The general DHCP behaviour does not change, i.e. in case of multiple off=
ers simply pick one etc.

I hope this makes sense to you.

Best,

Rolf

Hi Rolf,
Thanks for the response.

Yes. That's what I meant. (Although I'm just asking and not suggesting. )

Please correct me if I'm wrong. I think there are several reasons for
having multiple DHCP servers.
I'm guessing it will be something like
   1) redundancy
   2) load balancing/multi-home
   3) misconfiguration
In case of 1), it won't be very nice as you said. But, I think we
might be able to exclude this case by checking
the offered IP address. I mean, if client gets the same range of IP
addresses, it will send only one DHCP request to one server.
For 2), I think it's OK to use multipath.
For 3), clients can be messed up with or without multipath function.
so I think we don't have to think about this much..
Considering these cases, I think sending multiple DHCP requests might
be acceptable..

I think I understand the benefit. But, my concern is some ISP might
provide to users settop boxes which
integrate NAT and DHCP servers. In such case, if you subscribe two
ISPs, you'll get two boxes, which
might be difficult to apply the idea of this draft.

Thanks,

Hello all,

we have done a new release of MultiPath TCP.
The major new feature is the ability to configure the Kernel in such a way,=
=20
that mptcp creates its subflows by using different source-ports and not by=
=20
going over the different interfaces.

Several other smaller features have also been added to this release, and a=
=20
huge number of bugs have been fixed.

Have a look at https://scm.info.ucl.ac.be/trac/mptcp/ to find information=20
about our implementation and how to download, install and configure it.
=46eel free to ask questions about the implementation at the mptcp-dev list:
https://listes-2.sipr.ucl.ac.be/sympa/info/mptcp-dev

=46or further information about MPTCP (e.g., published papers,...) visit=20
http://inl.info.ucl.ac.be/mptcp/

=46or the IETF-week we have also created an MPTCP-enabled Live-CD, availabl=
e for=20
download at different places:
=46or those, present in Prague, you have a fast download via:
    https://noc.meeting.ietf.org/wiki
Or via bittorrent:
    https://fit.nokia.com/lars/tmp/ubuntu-10.10-mptcp-amd64.iso.torrent
You can also download it from our mptcp-enabled server:
    http://mptcp.info.ucl.ac.be

You can easily install a live-cd on a usb-stick by using "usb-creator"=20
(https://launchpad.net/usb-creator)

The Live-CD is currently a 64-bit version, that should run on all modern PC=
's=20
and MacBooks.

Cheers,
Christoph

Dear all,

I read the ID and have the following comments:

* I'm not sure why you need REQ4. In SCTP we do have this for
1-to-many style sockets, but I do not see that you use this
for MPTCP. On 1-to-1 style sockets, it is not needed for
  SCTP at least.

* Section 5.3.1: Why can't you use TCP_MUTLIPATH_REMOVE only after =
connection setup?

* Table 1: What is a "list of addresses"?

* Table 1: What is a "list of pairs of addresses"?

* Section 5.3.5: Why is TCP_MULTIPATH_CONNID needed?

* Section 6.1: Are you suggesting that sctp_bindx(), sctp_connectx(),
sctp_getladdrs(), sctp_getpaddrs() are also provided for MPTCP?
  This sounds strange.
Maybe one can introduce bindx(), connectx(), getladdrs(), getpaddrs()
which supports SCTP and MPTCP. Kacheong suggested that a while ago.
Maybe it is time to do that.
Please note that you missed sctp_freeladdrs() and sctp_freepaddrs().

Best regards
Michael

The logic for REQ4 (connection ID) is explained in the text below that =
list:

Finally, it should be possible for the
application to retrieve a unique connection identifier (local to the
endpoint on which it is running) for the MPTCP connection. This is
equivalent to using the (address, port) pair for a connection=20
identifier in single-path TCP, which is no longer static in MPTCP.

Since there is no longer a single, static (address, port) pair for a =
connection, we should provide a static connection ID for MPTCP-aware =
applications to track its connections.

Not sure there's much of a call for it, but I guess there's no reason to =
prevent its use in address list management before setting up a =
connection.

> * Table 1: What is a "list of addresses"?

An abstract data structure consisting of a list of IP (v4 and/or v6) =
addresses (and optionally ports).

Do you consider it necessary to be more explicit? The data structures =
are explained in more detail in the following sections.

See above, but this time with pairs within the list :)

See my response to REQ4 above.

I'll leave Michael to answer that one :)

However, on a drop on any subflow, the total rate is decreased by 1/4 =
because the subflow that takes the drop halves its rate. In aggregate =
this decrease is less aggresive than TCPs. The slower increase + less =
aggressive decrease of multipath even out, and the resulting rate is =
that of the single path tcp.

Thanks to Luigi for volunteering to jabber.
We still need volunteers for note taking - thankyou!

Randy Stewart brought up a patent from his days at Cisco he thought
might be relevant. I found it. The disclosure was in 2002:
<https://datatracker.ietf.org/ipr/65/>. The patent is USA 7051109.
To be clear, I hadn't known about this patent when I got up at the
microphone.
