Hi,

Can I get some feedback on below question about fallback mechanism? This im=
portant for compatibility between different implementations.

Regards,
Mahesh

Subject: RE: [multipathtcp] Fallback mechanism

Hi,

I understand the reason for having a single subflow at the time of fallback=
. This is exactly why both ends should fallback to infinite mapping and aft=
er that they should not send any more DSS options. In the draft there two d=
ifferent types of fallback one at the time of first ACK and second when the=
re is a checksum issue. For the first one there is no explicit signaling fr=
om the receiver but for the later one we have explicit MP_FAIL signal from =
the receiver. In the explicit MP_FAIL signaling case, it contains the seque=
nce number from where it wants to receive the data from the MPTCP sequence =
space. If we consider a case where in both the directions data in flowing s=
imultaneously, if one side fallback to infinite mapping other side has to f=
allback too, but for this MP_FAIL signal has to be generated in both the di=
rections so that both ends can sync up and learn the sequence from which th=
ey need to start infinite mapping.
Since there is no explicit signaling for the fallback mechanism at the firs=
t ACK case, there needs some clarification in the draft on how/when both th=
e ends will sync up on sending infinite mapping.

Regards,
Mahesh

Hello Mahesh,

I think it's an interesting discussion point.
According to the draft, it doesn't necessarily require to close all subflow=
s except one.
If other subflows are still active, it might be possible for the other side=
to continue using MPTCP as long as data acks come back. If we think about =
this kind of situations, I think infinite mapping will be one direction.
Do you have any concern about using infinite mappings in one direction?

When a connection has fallen back, only one subflow can send data,
otherwise the receiver would not know how to reorder the data. In
practice, this means that all MPTCP subflows will have to be
   terminated except one.

Thanks,

Yes, both ends would have to send MP_FAIL in this case. The sending of a DS=
S with infinite mapping is the acknowledgement signal to say that this MP_F=
AIL has been received. If no DSS is received with an infinite mapping withi=
n a window's worth of data, the MP_FAIL should be re-sent. An endpoint woul=
d also be at liberty to close and restart this subflow (with infinite mappi=
ng) if it had reason to believe its MP_FAIL was not being acted on. This is=
ultimately local implementation policy and I don't see it would affect com=
patibility in a big way.

Regards,
Alan

Thanks,

Hi,

I did not find any mention in the draft that the end receiving MP_FAIL also=
needs to send MP_FAIL after sending infinite mapping. If it is there let m=
e know. If draft does not make in mandatory then it can create incompatibil=
ity.

Regards,
Mahesh

Hi Mahesh,

Hi,

Can I get some feedback on below question about fallback mechanism? This im=
portant for compatibility between different implementations.

Regards,
Mahesh

Subject: Re: [multipathtcp] Fallback mechanism

Thanks,

No, you do not need to send an MP_FAIL on receipt of an MP_FAIL. I thought =
the case you described below referred to when both ends detected a failure =
at the same time.

Reading again, I see you mean that you need both ends to fall back if one h=
as signalled it.

I don't see there any technical reason why you could not have asymmetric pa=
ths deployed, with only one direction fallen back, but in reality I would e=
xpect both ends to fallback. Whilst it could could increase complexity to c=
ope with this, it does not seem necessary to prohibit it. A simple implemen=
tation that could not cope with asymmetry in the directions could choose to=
send MP_FAIL on receipt of MP_FAIL and thus would be safe.

Alan

Hi,

I did not find any mention in the draft that the end receiving MP_FAIL also=
needs to send MP_FAIL after sending infinite mapping. If it is there let m=
e know. If draft does not make in mandatory then it can create incompatibil=
ity.

Hi Mahesh,

Alan

Thanks,

Hi Mahesh,

I can imagine most of implementations will fallback in both directions and
I think it is totally fine since it's not violating the spec at all.
But, I don't see a strong reason to update the spec to make this mandatory.
Are there potential risks for one way infinite mapping?

Thanks,

Hi folks,

we ported UCLouvain MPTCP implementation to Android 4.1.2. If you are
interested in running MPTCP at Google Nexus S, please, have a look at
https://github.com/mptcp-nexus/android

  The complete package (https://github.com/mptcp-nexus/) includes:

  * A modified Android Connection Manager, which enables 3G and WiFi in
parallel (in android_framework_base).

  * A modified Network Daemon, which automatically configures routes for
both interfaces (in android_system_netd).

  * A modified iproute2 package to enable the MPTCPControl app to
support MPTCP specific commands (in android_external_iproute2).

Many thanks to Christoph for support!

Cheers on behalf of the team
  matthias

Hello,

Phil and I are thinking about the WG meeting in Orlando.
We're thinking that having a hour or so slot to discuss the recent
updates of activities would be good.
Also, if you have some topics to be discussed at the meeting, please
let us know.

Thanks,

TCP/IP communication is currently restricted to a single path per
connection, yet multiple paths often exist between peers. The
simultaneous use of these multiple paths for a TCP/IP session would
improve resource usage within the network and, thus, improve user
experience through higher throughput and improved resilience to
network failure.

Multipath TCP provides the ability to simultaneously use multiple
paths between peers. This document presents a set of extensions to
traditional TCP to support multipath operation. The protocol offers
the same type of service to applications as TCP (i.e., reliable
bytestream), and it provides the components necessary to establish
and use multiple TCP flows across potentially disjoint paths. This
document defines an Experimental Protocol for the Internet
community.

This document is a product of the Multipath TCP Working Group of the IETF.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the Multipath TCP Working Group of the IETF.

Title : MPTCP Application Interface Considerations
	Author(s) : Michael Scharf
                          Alan Ford
	Filename : draft-ietf-mptcp-api-07.txt
	Pages : 34
	Date : 2013-01-19

Abstract:
Multipath TCP (MPTCP) adds the capability of using multiple paths to
a regular TCP session. Even though it is designed to be totally
backward compatible to applications, the data transport differs
compared to regular TCP, and there are several additional degrees of
freedom that applications may wish to exploit. This document
summarizes the impact that MPTCP may have on applications, such as
changes in performance. Furthermore, it discusses compatibility
issues of MPTCP in combination with non-MPTCP-aware applications.
Finally, the document describes a basic application interface which
is a simple extension of TCP's interface for MPTCP-aware
   applications.

Technical Summary

Working Group Summary

The document was not particularly controversial. There was very good consensus in the WG about the document. The document has been stable for quite a while, since it was decided to advance it in parallel with the MPTCP protocol.

Document Quality

The dcoument has been reviewed within the WG. Michael Tüxen (SCTP author) provided an expert review. There was also a WG last call, which resulted in some clarifications.
An implementation of the protocol is publicly available, and other implementations are in progress. The API for MPTCP-aware applications has not been implemented to our knowledge.

Personnel

The document shepherd is Philip Eardley. The Responsible Area Director is Wes Eddy.
