Hi List,

The PA-TNC document is clear on how attributes types are relative to
the vendor-ID value used in a message.

The PA-TNC document also mentions a registry for PA-subtypes. What I
wanted to make sure is that other organizations could establish an SMI
value and register NEW PA subtypes that are relative to the
organization-specific SMI.

Are there any limitations or constraints on creating new PA subtypes
under a specific SMI ?

Thanks!
Randy

The PA Subtype registry is created in the PB-TNC spec.
Look there for information about how that registry
will be managed.

To answer your question, any organization can get an
SMI Private Enterprise Number (PEN) from IANA and then
create new PA Subtypes of any kind and for any purpose
that will be used with that organization's SMI PEN.

For example, my employer Juniper has an SMI PEN of 2636.
We could define a PA Subtype for Power Supply Firmware
(or something else that we came up with). Let's say that
we decided to make that PA Subtype 27, when used with
our SMI PEN of 2636. No problem. Now we can send around
PB-PA messages with that PA Subtype and SMI PEN.

An organization that defines a new PA Subtype is not
required to register their PA Subtype with IANA. They
can keep it to themselves. But if they want to register
their PA Subtype values with IANA, they can do so. They
just need to send a spec for their PA Subtype value to
IANA which will trigger the Expert Review process
described in sectin 6.1 of PB-TNC. Of course, this
process won't be ready to go until PB-TNC becomes
an RFC (real soon now, I hope! ;-).

I hope that helps.

Thanks,

Steve

Thanks for the reply Steve....

So IANA will keep a registry of SMI-specific attributes and PA-
subtypes for SMI values OTHER than IETF (SMI=0)?

Also, does the expert review process only occur if we're registering
additional values as standard IETF types(SMI=0), or
does the expert review process occur regardless of which SMI we're
registering under?

Thanks!!
Randy

Yes, the plan is for IANA to keep one registry for PA Subtypes
and include in that registry both values with SMI PEN =3D 0 and
values with SMI PEN !=3D 0. The Designated Expert process will
be used for all of these values but the criteria to be used
by the Designated Expert are less stringent when PEN !=3D 0.

All this information is in the IANA Considerations section
of PB-TNC, BTW. Please let me know if you found that section
less than clear.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi List,

I know this message is a little late to the party, so take it as just
an informational comment/question...

In the PA-TNC draft (current version), a set of primitive data types
are defined near the front of the document, however these data types are
never referenced again during the definition of the attribute values.
For instance, OctetArray, IPv4Address, IPv6Address, VersionNum, and
TimeString
are never used within the document. They are defined, but never used
(in compiler speak :) It looks like the someone changed their mind
later in the document
and instead of referencing existing data types, each attribute
definition and encoding was completely specified in each attribute
definition section, without any references to data types.

I'm assuming it's safe to ignore data types in an implementation and
just encode exactly what is specified in each attribute definition and
accompanying
diagram. Is this is safe assumption?

Thanks!
Randy

Hi Randy,

The editors have been debating the value of these data types given that it
will be difficult to define a complete set of primitives. We have decided to
remove Section 3.6 in the next revision of the PA-TNC ID.

It is safe to ignore these data/field types.

Regards,
 kaushik

Hi List,

I had a question about the definition of "Numeric Version" in section
4.2.3 of the PA-TNC-04 draft.

Two of the fields are "service pack major" and "service pack minor".
Were these two fields added to specifically support Microsoft products?
Or could I equate these fields with "Patch level major" and "Patch
level minor" ?
The definition of this field is somewhat "recursive" in the document,
so I'm not sure what a "service pack" is, unless I could equate this
term with "Patch".

Thanks!
Randy

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the Network Endpoint Assessment Working Group of the IETF.

Title : PA-TNC: A Posture Attribute Protocol (PA) Compatible with TNC
	Author(s)	: K. Narayan, P. Sangster
	Filename	: draft-ietf-nea-pa-tnc-05.txt
	Pages : 86
	Date : 2009-8-25

This document specifies PA-TNC, a Posture Attribute Protocol
identical to the Trusted Computing Group's IF-M 1.0 protocol.
The document then evaluates PA-TNC against the requirements
defined in the NEA Requirements specification.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-nea-pa-tnc-05.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP at:
ftp://ftp.ietf.org/internet-drafts/

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

As you probably noticed, the editors of the PA-TNC specification have
released an update to the document based upon comments made during IESG
review and the IETF 75 meeting in Sweden. =20
=20
The changes to the specification were relatively minor and are
summarized below:
o Section 1.1 (relationship to TNC) - removed in favor of a brief
mention in the acknowlegement section
o Section 3.1 & 3.3 - minor editorial rewordings
o Section 3.6 (PA-TNC field types) - removed as it wasn't required to
specify the protocol and wasn't used by rest of document
o Section 4.1 - updated text to clarity limitation of attribute length
field (PA exists within a PB TLV which also uses a 32 bit length)
o Section 4.2.1 - added text to clarify why Attribute Request support is
a SHOULD (not a MUST)
o Section 4.2.4 - fixed wording mistake in Config Len description
o Section 4.2.5 - emphasize compliance with date-time ABNF production in
RFC 3339
o Section 4.2.5 - minor wording changes to clarify protocol and port
number registries used
o Section 4.2.10 (remediation instructions) - restructured text and
added diagrams to match remainder of spec.
o Section 4.2.10.2 - new section adding fields that allow the
remediation string to be tagged with an RFC 4646 language tag. This
approach mirrors what was done in PB-TNC for including a language tag
for the reason string. The remediation string is likely to be displayed
to a user or administrator so language tags seemed appropriate.
o Section 5.1.2 - new bullet regarding remediation instructions
o Section 5.2 - removal of mention of the PA-TNC security protocol
o Section 5.2.2 - discussion of risks associated with posture collector
performing potentially hostile remediation instructions from posture
validator
o Section 7.3 - inclusion several newly (in -04) added attribute types
(e.g. forwarding enabled) to IANA table
o Section 7.4 & 7.5 - added reserved values (zero) to IANA list
o Section 8 - brief acknowledgement of TCG proposing specification
o Section 9.1 - added RFC 4646 and 3986 to normative references section
o Section 9.2 - removed reference to PA-TNC security protocol proposed

The new text and subsections in section 4.2.10 was the largest change,
and followed the approach approved by the WG in prior PB-TNC versions
(for the Reason String) and as discussed in Sweden.
