CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue of the International Journal on Network Management (IJNM) on
Management and Orchestration of 5G Networks: from Theory to Testbed

Scope of the Special Issue

5G is the envisioned next generation of the mobile network architecture.
Several initiatives are taking place in Asia, America, and Europe in the 5G
domain such as the MOST 5G project in China, the 5G forum formed in South
Korea, the =E2=80=9C2020 and beyond=E2=80=9D Ad Hoc group in Japan, and the=
 5G
Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G PPP) in Europe. The emerging
common features/requirements from these worldwide activities could be
summarized as the following: faster data transfer rates, shorter latency,
availability, security, lower costs and power consumption, and high
performance even in fast mobility situations.

5G networks are expected to heavily rely on the most recent advances in
Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization
(NFV), hence offering the opportunity to build an open and innovative
platform that utilizes an eclectic combination of current and future
network architectures, technologies and scenarios. The need for an
innovative 5G network architecture, effective and advanced network
management approaches are also foundational to fulfil these requirements.

This special issue of the *International Journal of Network Management*
(IJNM) calls for advances in fundamental as well as in system and
experimentally driven research in the area of management and orchestration
of 5G networks, addressing topics such as management of SDN/NFV based
networks and services, convergence of SDN, NFV, and MEC approaches,
programmatic languages and abstractions applied to resources and service
management, and big data and analytics applied to management.

Contributions to the following topics are of specific interest, but are not
limited to:

- Analytics and big data approaches for managing 5G networks and services

- Cognitive and autonomic management & orchestration

- End-to-end mobile software networks architecture

- Programming abstractions for 5G networks

- Metadata, data and information models and semantics

- Policy-based management, including imperative, declarative (intent), and
other
paradigms

- Management of cloud, SDI, and NFV

- Management architecture, protocols and APIs for 5G networks, layers and
systems

- Advances in mobile network management and orchestration

- Dynamic service placement and management

- QoS and QoE in software defined 5G networks

- Fronthaul and backhaul integration

- Spectrum sharing

- Evaluation, testbeds and management

- Feedback on 5G experimental testbed

- Open source tools for 5G prototyping

- Emerging 5G standards

- Economic drivers for 5G technology deployment

Hi, all,

The US Department of Energy (DOE) recently issued its Network2025 report
from its Feb 2016 workshop; both the report and workshop are linked here:

    https://science.energy.gov/ascr/community-resources/program-documents/

This report provides a roadmap of key networking issues for the short
(1-3 yrs), medium (4-6 yrs), and long term (10-12 yrs), and includes
links to white papers presented at the meeting.

Of particular interest to NFVRG are its comments on the need for
improved NFV to support very high speed, very large transfers over
heterogeneous paths.

FYI.

Joe

****

The 2017 IEEE Conference on Network Functions Virtualization and Software D=
efined Networking (IEEE NFV-SDN) will be held in November 6th to 8th, 2017 =
at the Fraunhofer Forum in Berlin, Germany. In addition to the latest NFV a=
nd SDN concepts and mechanisms, the 2017 IEEE NFV-SDN conference will focus=
on first operational results related to virtualized networks functions (VN=
Fs) as well as describing new applications of VNFs which smarten networks a=
nd their usage.

*** Scope ***

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networks (SDN) =
enable rapid network and service innovation for all participants in the eco=
system. NFV enables network capacity and functionality to be decoupled, all=
owing network functions to be dynamically deployed whenever they are requir=
ed and wherever they can be hosted. SDN allows programmability of the NFV n=
etworking infrastructure to support the deployment of new network functions=
in a variety of environments including telecommunications networks, campus=
and enterprise networks, and data centers. The dramatic industry transform=
ation implied by NFV and SDN will not only impact computing platforms and n=
etwork architectures, but will also open up new avenues of research. Furthe=
r, these technologies will accelerate the deployment of new capabilities to=
enable smart cities/homes/cars/businesses and green infrastructures. And w=
e will see new types of user interfaces and physical system realizations. I=
n addition to the latest NFV and SDN concepts and mechanisms, the 2017 IEEE=
NFV-SDN conference will focus on first operational results related to virt=
ualized networks functions (VNFs) as well as describing new applications of=
VNFs which smarten networks and their usage.

*** Topics of interests ***

The IEEE NFV-SDN conference brings together researchers from around the wor=
ld to share ideas that can impact the evolution and operation of NFV and SD=
N technologies. We encourage submission of innovative work on NFV and SDN. =
The following is a non-exhaustive list of topics:

- NFV and SDN Architectures

-- Advances in Control planes, forwarding abstractions and programmability =
paradigms

-- Analysis of combined control plane architectures

-- Emerging improvements including Network Slicing and hierarchical control=
lers

- NFV and SDN Infrastructure and Elements

-- Improvements in design of forwarding elements, e.g. switches/routers, wi=
reless systems

-- Optimizing NFV infrastructures includinghardware acceleration technologi=
es

- NFV and SDN Operations

-- Dynamic service function chaining/orchestration and traffic steering

-- Dynamic license management, autonomics, machine learning, monitoring, re=
siliency, fault management and self-healing

-- Security impacts

-- Advanced tools for automated design, deployment, validation and manageme=
nt

-- Application of machine learning and big data analytics to manage virtual=
ized networks

- Performance Analysis and Optimization

-- Data/control plane performance, interoperability and scalability studies

-- Resource dimensioning and optimization (e.g. cloud-native design), workl=
oad isolation and tradeoffs

-- Design guidelines for modularity, scalability, high availability and int=
eroperability (e.g. container and micro services implementations)

- Results and Evaluations in Application Scenarios

-- Usage scenarios such as SD-WAN, IoT, Smart Grid, Smart Cities, etc.

-- Improvements in future communication infrastructure enabled by SDN and N=
FV including RAN, evolution to 5G, public, private and hybrid clouds

-- Operations experience (e.g. lab. and field trial results)

-- New commercial models and ecosystems enabled by NFV and SDN

*** Call for Submissions ***

2017 IEEE NFV-SDN will feature technical paper presentations, tutorials and=
demos. Additionally, topical workshops will be co-located so various call =
for proposals are issued. Deadlines are as follows:

- April 1st, 2017: Workshop proposal deadline

- May 15th, 2017: Full paper submission deadline (extended)

- June 1st, 2017: Demo / tutorial / panel proposal submission deadline

- June 15th, 2017: Fast-track paper submission deadline

- June 15th, 2017: Acceptance notification (full papers)

- August 30th, 2017: Acceptance notification (fast-track papers, tutorials,=
 demo)

- September 15th, 2017: Camera-ready papers

Call for Demos, Call for Tutorials and Call for Workshop are published sepa=
rately, details can be found on the conference website http://sites.ieee.or=
g/nfvsdn-2017/

*** Authors and submission guidelines ***

Prospective authors are invited to submit original full technical or fast-t=
rack papers for publication in the IEEE NFV-SDN 2017 Conference Proceedings=
and for presentation in the technical sessions. We solicit submission of h=
igh-quality full papers reporting original and novel research results on al=
l above topics. Papers must be written in English, unpublished and not subm=
itted elsewhere. Full papers must be formatted as the standard IEEE double-=
column conference template

FULL TECHNICAL PAPERS should have a maximum paper length of six (6) printed=
pag-es (10-point font), including figures, without incurring additional pa=
ge charges (maximum 1 additional page with over length page charge of USD10=
0 if accepted). Papers exceeding 7 pages will not be accepted at EDAS.Submi=
ssions should be uploaded on http://edas.info/N23484.

FAST-TRACK PAPERS: In addition, we welcome fast-track papers from the resea=
rch community up to four (4) pages in length (10pt font); max. one addition=
al page with over length page charge of USD100 if accepted. These papers sh=
ould focus more on recent and newly-developing results. FAST-TRACK papers w=
ill be reviewed with a more open mind towards the scope of evaluation or br=
eadth of topics compared to longer papers. We rec-ommend that authors check=
both calls for papers before submitting. Submissions should be uploaded on=
 http://edas.info/N23484.

To be published in the IEEE NFV-SDN 2017 Conference Proceedings and to be e=
ligible for publication in IEEE Xplore, an author of an accepted paper is r=
equired to register for the conference at the FULL (member or non-member) r=
ate and the paper must be presented by an author of that paper at the confe=
rence. For authors with multiple accepted papers, one FULL registration is v=
alid for up to 3 papers. Accepted and presented papers will be published in=
the IEEE NFV-SDN 2017 Conference Proceedings and submitted to IEEE Xplore=
=AE.

The IEEE reserves the right to exclude a paper from distribution after the =
conference (in-cluding its removal from IEEE Xplore) if the paper is not pr=
esented at the conference. Papers are reviewed on the basis that they do no=
t contain plagiarized material and have not been submitted to any other con=
ference at the same time (double submission). These matters are taken very =
seriously and the IEEE Communications Society will take action against any =
author who engages in either practice.

IEEE NFV-SDN 2017 - Extended Deadlines

IEEE Conference on Network Functions Virtualization & Software Defined
Networks

November 6th-8th, 2017, Berlin, Germany

http://nfvsdn2017.ieee-nfvsdn.org/

***************************************************************************=
****

The 2017 IEEE Conference on Network Functions Virtualization and Software
Defined Networking (IEEE NFV-SDN) will be held in November 6th to 8th, 2017
at the Fraunhofer Forum in Berlin, Germany. In addition to the latest NFV
and SDN concepts and mechanisms, the 2017 IEEE NFV-SDN conference will
focus on first operational results related to virtualized networks
functions (VNFs) as well as describing new applications of VNFs which
smarten networks and their usage.

*** Scope ***

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networks (SDN)
enable rapid network and service innovation for all participants in the
ecosystem. NFV enables network capacity and functionality to be decoupled,
allowing network functions to be dynamically deployed whenever they are
required and wherever they can be hosted. SDN allows programmability of the
NFV networking infrastructure to support the deployment of new network
functions in a variety of environments including telecommunications
networks, campus and enterprise networks, and data centers. The dramatic
industry transformation implied by NFV and SDN will not only impact
computing platforms and network architectures, but will also open up new
avenues of research. Further, these technologies will accelerate the
deployment of new capabilities to enable smart cities/homes/cars/businesses
and green infrastructures. And we will see new types of user interfaces and
physical system realizations. In addition to the latest NFV and SDN
concepts and mechanisms, the 2017 IEEE NFV-SDN conference will focus on
first operational results related to virtualized networks functions (VNFs)
as well as describing new applications of VNFs which smarten networks and
their usage.

*** Topics of interests ***

The IEEE NFV-SDN conference brings together researchers from around the
world to share ideas that can impact the evolution and operation of NFV and
SDN technologies. We encourage submission of innovative work on NFV and
SDN. The following is a non-exhaustive list of topics:

- NFV and SDN Architectures

-- Advances in Control planes, forwarding abstractions and programmability
paradigms

-- Analysis of combined control plane architectures

-- Emerging improvements including Network Slicing and hierarchical
controllers

- NFV and SDN Infrastructure and Elements

-- Improvements in design of forwarding elements, e.g. switches/routers,
wireless systems

-- Optimizing NFV infrastructures includinghardware acceleration
technologies

- NFV and SDN Operations

-- Dynamic service function chaining/orchestration and traffic steering

-- Dynamic license management, autonomics, machine learning, monitoring,
resiliency, fault management and self-healing

-- Security impacts

-- Advanced tools for automated design, deployment, validation and
management

-- Application of machine learning and big data analytics to manage
virtualized networks

- Performance Analysis and Optimization

-- Data/control plane performance, interoperability and scalability studies

-- Resource dimensioning and optimization (e.g. cloud-native design),
workload isolation and tradeoffs

-- Design guidelines for modularity, scalability, high availability and
interoperability (e.g. container and micro services implementations)

- Results and Evaluations in Application Scenarios

-- Usage scenarios such as SD-WAN, IoT, Smart Grid, Smart Cities, etc.

-- Improvements in future communication infrastructure enabled by SDN and
NFV including RAN, evolution to 5G, public, private and hybrid clouds

-- Operations experience (e.g. lab. and field trial results)

-- New commercial models and ecosystems enabled by NFV and SDN

*** Call for Submissions ***

2017 IEEE NFV-SDN will feature technical paper presentations, tutorials and
demos. Additionally, topical workshops will be co-located so various call
for proposals are issued. Deadlines are as follows:

- April 1st, 2017: Workshop proposal deadline

- May 15th, 2017: Full paper submission deadline (extended)

- June 1st, 2017: Demo / tutorial / panel proposal submission deadline

- June 15th, 2017: Fast-track paper submission deadline

- June 15th, 2017: Acceptance notification (full papers)

- August 30th, 2017: Acceptance notification (fast-track papers, tutorials,
demo)

- September 15th, 2017: Camera-ready papers

Call for Demos, Call for Tutorials and Call for Workshop are published
separately, details can be found on the conference website
http://sites.ieee.org/nfvsdn-2017/

*** Authors and submission guidelines ***

Prospective authors are invited to submit original full technical or
fast-track papers for publication in the IEEE NFV-SDN 2017 Conference
Proceedings and for presentation in the technical sessions. We solicit
submission of high-quality full papers reporting original and novel
research results on all above topics. Papers must be written in English,
unpublished and not submitted elsewhere. Full papers must be formatted as
the standard IEEE double-column conference template

FULL TECHNICAL PAPERS should have a maximum paper length of six (6) printed
pag-es (10-point font), including figures, without incurring additional
page charges (maximum 1 additional page with over length page charge of
USD100 if accepted). Papers exceeding 7 pages will not be accepted at
EDAS.Submissions should be uploaded on http://edas.info/N23484.

FAST-TRACK PAPERS: In addition, we welcome fast-track papers from the
research community up to four (4) pages in length (10pt font); max. one
additional page with over length page charge of USD100 if accepted. These
papers should focus more on recent and newly-developing results. FAST-TRACK
papers will be reviewed with a more open mind towards the scope of
evaluation or breadth of topics compared to longer papers. We rec-ommend
that authors check both calls for papers before submitting. Submissions
should be uploaded on http://edas.info/N23484.

To be published in the IEEE NFV-SDN 2017 Conference Proceedings and to be
eligible for publication in IEEE Xplore, an author of an accepted paper is
required to register for the conference at the FULL (member or non-member)
rate and the paper must be presented by an author of that paper at the
conference. For authors with multiple accepted papers, one FULL registration
is valid for up to 3 papers. Accepted and presented papers will be
published in the IEEE NFV-SDN 2017 Conference Proceedings and submitted to
IEEE Xplore=C2=AE.

The IEEE reserves the right to exclude a paper from distribution after the
conference (in-cluding its removal from IEEE Xplore) if the paper is not
presented at the conference. Papers are reviewed on the basis that they do
not contain plagiarized material and have not been submitted to any other
conference at the same time (double submission). These matters are taken
very seriously and the IEEE Communications Society will take action against
any author who engages in either practice.

Hi Carlos,=20

|Thanks again for your very useful comments. Please, find below some
|answers inline on how we have incorporated/considerated your
|comments

My pleasure. I will look into -05 more carefully, but a very cursory =
look indicates a missing pointer to RFC 7426 in Section 2 (Terminology), =
as this is where the definitions of AP/CP/FP/MP originate from. Perhaps =
s/ and the IETF [RFC7665]/ and the IETF [RFC7426] [RFC7665]?

In general, Section 3 lacks a summary/conclusion section, imo. One idea =
would be to use e.g. Fig. 4 as a reference and map the open source =
efforts (sec. 3.6) using a matrix, plus some glue text that points to =
the challenges introduced in Section 4.=20

A couple of other editorial comments below:

Section 3.1, "To date, ETSI NFV is by far the most accepted NFV =
reference framework and architectural footprint =
[etsi_nvf_whitepaper_2]." I'm not sure how this sentence will age, and =
I'm not sure if the reference to the whitepaper fits with the claim =
("most accepted"). I find the sentence a bit gratuitous anyway. Ditto in =
Section 3.2, "The most visible of the SDN protocol stacks is the =
OpenFlow protocol".

Some further nits:

s/resource model of the underneath network/resource model of the =
underlying network

SDN (the acronym) is defined in a few places, I guess due to the =
independent author contributions.

Best regards,

Kostas
