Dear NSIS WG members,

(announcement sent to NSIS and MMUSIC lists)

this draft examines how the NSIS NATFW NSLP (and other firewall control
protocols) work together with SIP, especially if something goes wrong.
The conclusion is basically that the normal SIP mechanisms are not
sufficient to handle all error conditions in a reasonable way, and
therefore a new SIP precondition should be standardized.
This would be the turf of the mmusic WG, therefore comments should
go to the mmusic list.

Thanks,
Sebastian

A new version of I-D, draft-kiesel-mmusic-firewall-sip-00.txt has been successfuly submitted by Sebastian Kiesel and posted to the IETF repository.

Filename: draft-kiesel-mmusic-firewall-sip
Revision: 00
Title: Interaction of dynamic firewall control protocols and SIP
Creation_date: 2009-07-06
WG ID: Independent Submission
Number_of_pages: 21

Abstract:
SIP-based multimedia applications dynamically negotiate parameters
for the related media streams, such as UDP port numbers. Therefore,
firewalls that want to inspect these streams have to interact with
the session signaling. Several architectures and protocols have been
developed for the dynamic control of firewalls on the media path, e.
g., MIDCOM, SIMCO, and the NSIS NAT/FW NSLP. This document
investigates problems with the interaction of standard SIP (as of RFC
3261) and these firewall control protocols, especially with respect
to error handling. It will be pointed out how existing SIP
extensions can be used for improving the interaction, and which
additional mechanisms need to be specified. While the actual
specification of such additional mechanisms is out of the scope of
this document, it solicits feedback and discussion.

Title : RMD-QOSM - The Resource Management in Diffserv QOS Model
	Author(s) : A. Bader, et al.
	Filename : draft-ietf-nsis-rmd-15.txt
	Pages : 101
	Date : 2009-07-10

This document describes an NSIS QoS Model for networks that use the
Resource Management in Diffserv (RMD) concept. RMD is a technique
for adding admission control and pre-emption function to
Differentiated Services (Diffserv) networks. The RMD QoS Model
allows devices external to the RMD network to signal reservation
requests to edge nodes in the RMD network. The RMD Ingress edge nodes
classify the incoming flows into traffic classes and signals resource
requests for the corresponding traffic class along the data path to
the Egress edge nodes for each flow. Egress nodes reconstitute the
original requests and continue forwarding them along the data path
towards the final destination. In addition, RMD defines notification
functions to indicate overload situations within the domain to the
edge nodes.

Title : Applicability Statement of NSIS Protocols in Mobile Environments
	Author(s) : T. Sanda, et al.
	Filename : draft-ietf-nsis-applicability-mobility-signaling-13.txt

Mobility of an IP-based node affects routing paths, and as a result,
can have a significant effect on the protocol operation and state
management. This draft discusses the effects mobility can cause to
the NSIS protocol suite, and how the protocols operate in different
scenarios, with mobility management protocols.

Hi.

Thanks for the comments and apologies for the long delay in acking your
helpful review!

I was waiting for the outcome of the IESG discussiojns and then got tied
up in other work. Anyway I have now submitted a new version (JIT!).

A couple of your comments have been OBE (back to RAO), but I trust my
fixes will suit.
Regards,
Elwyn

I fixed these up as I thought appropriate.. preferring NSIS protocol
suite and signaling application layer. The NTLP/GIST one seemed mostly
OK to me.

OK.. plus path -> part of path.

NO.. when this is finished they will be standardized.

added capable to the second instance in the para.

Left this one alone.

OK. I did something close to this.

This one is done both ways (especially in the UK.. I like s)

The problem is the last part.. new version: "GIST reuses already
established signaling relationships and messaging associations to next
hop peers if the signaling
transport attributes are the sane for the signalong flows."

Added UDP and Query mesaage Didn't action the second part.. seems too
detailed for this doc.

OBE: Completely new text in this section due to resurgence of RAO.

Previous fixes make this clearer I hope.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Next Steps in Signaling Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Using and Extending the NSIS Protocol Family
	Author(s) : J. Manner, et al.

This document gives an overview of the Next Steps in Signaling (NSIS)
framework and protocol suite created by the NSIS working group during
the period 2001-2009 together with suggestions on how the industry
can make use of the new protocols, and how the community can exploit
the extensibility of both the framework and existing protocols to
address future signaling needs.

Hi.

I have just submitted a new version of the extensibility draft which I
hope addresses all these comments, and has also been resynched with the
RAO story as per mtlp version 20.

Thanks for the helpful review.

Not sure if this will need another WGLC due to RAO changes.

Regards,
Elwyn

Dear all,

Since there were no further comments to the draft, I consider it to have
passed WGLC and is ready to go forward.

Jukka

Hello,

The Routing, Transport and Internet area directors have agreed to move
the work on Router Alert option (that started in Routing Area) into
the Internet Area.
Therefore, we would appreciate feedback from this list on the new
version of draft-rahman-rtg-router-alert-considerations.

Thank you

Francois

Hi,

With the approval of draft-ietf-nsis-ntlp-20 as an Experimental I-D, I
wanted to give my own personal view of why this is a good thing, how we
might have made progress that the working group might have found more
acceptable, and what could happen going forward.

Firstly, it is important to understand that an Experimantal status is not
perjorative. In fact, many good and widely deployed protocols grew up as
Experimental, benefitted from cautious deployment and feedback, and were
taken forward on the Standards Track. In some cases the protocols went
forward largely unchanged and in some cases significant updates were
made.

I believe it is really important that GIST will now be published as an RFC.
This will open up the implementation base and allow people to understand
that they are implementing a stable specification. In as much as the choice
of Experimental Status has enabled the log-jam to be broken and publication
achieved, it cannot be anything except a good thing.

My own view is that we could have reached this stage at least two years ago.
I am not interested in the who or why we did not, but IMHO we could have
reached the approved status by either:
- going straight to Experimental status
- clarifying the intended deployment scope.

The latter case needs some clarification. We hear talk of "walled gardens"
and what is meant is that some protocols are not necessarily suitable (or
intended) for deployment in every conceivable network. Of particular
interest are the distinctions between all-new nodes and new/legacy mixes,
enterprise and service provider networks, sinle domain and multi-domain
networks, and contained networks and "the Internet". I believe that had we
made these statements of intent and scope in the GIST spec up front and in
14pt type, we would have made far better progress.

Of course, the value of this information is now moot. I am not sure it is
worth discussion as it is picking over old bones. But maybe we can learn for
next time.

The NSIS working group already has some work on applicability. I think it
would be really helpful to pursue that thread with further applicability
stetements that caveat the environments in which GIST should be applied and
those in which it is not intended to be applied. (This is clearly a choice
for the WG and the responsible ADs, and not for me!)

I also hope that the folks who have built and deployed GIST will come back
(possibly in a relatively short period) to discuss their deployment
experience. Hopefully they will be able to tell us about the extent of their
deployments in live networks and report on the issues and successes they
had. The combination of these discussions and the applicability statements
could possibly be a revision of the GIST RFC that includes statements about
any deployment limits or advice, any protocol fixes and clarification, and
movement onto the standards track.

Cheers,
Adrian

PS Caveat! I am just one AD. This is my apple-pie view of the world.

Dear all,

Jukka and me decided to cancel the NSIS session at the upcoming IETF =
meeting. There was no request for agenda time and we actually have no =
issue to discuss right now f2f, i.e., all issues can be done on the =
mailing list.=20

Jukka and I will report the WG status to the WG soon.

Thanks,

  Martin

The IESG has approved the following document:

- 'GIST: General Internet Signalling Transport '
   <draft-ietf-nsis-ntlp-20.txt> as an Experimental RFC

This document is the product of the Next Steps in Signaling Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Magnus Westerlund and Lars Eggert.

A URL of this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-nsis-ntlp-20.txt

Technical Summary

This draft proposes a general signaling transport protocol. It is based
on the use of existing transport and security protocols under a common
messaging layer. GIST does not handle signaling application state
itself; in that crucial respect, it differs from application signaling
protocols such as SIP, RTSP, and the control component of FTP, but this
follows the basic NSIS 2-layer signaling model defined in RFC 4080.

Working Group Summary

This document was previously sent back from the IESG. The WG has now
addressed the issue raised by the IESG review and thinks it ready to
progress.

Protocol Quality

Magnus Westerlund was the responsible AD. This document was reviewed by
the working group chair as well as the WG. There are 6 or more independent
implementations of GIST, and there was an interop event prior to the
Paris IETF meeting. IETF Last call comments was received and has been
incorporated. Then it was sent back to the WG to take care of a number of
important to resolve issues. It has now gone through the WG process, and a
second IETF last call.

RFC-editor Note

Section 5.1, third paragraph:

OLD:

Messages with missing, duplicate or invalid objects
for the message type MUST be rejected with an "Object Type Error"
message with the appropriate subcode (Appendix A.4.4.9).

NEW:

Messages with missing, duplicate or invalid objects
for the message type MUST be rejected with an "Object Type Error"
message with the appropriate subcode (Appendix A.4.4.9). Note that
unknown objects indicate explicitly how they should be treated and
are not covered by the above statement.
