That seems more reasonable (though even having the conversation is surely an
exercise in absurdity).

		Subject: draft CLF charter

		All -
	=09
We are working on forming a CLF working group based on
DISPATCH's decision.
	=09
Below is a proposed charter for this working group.
Please review and comment
on this list. Depending on the feedback we receive, we
will target forming this
group shortly after the Stockholm meeting.
	=09
We'll also be discussing this in Thursday's opsarea
meeting.
	=09
		Thanks,
	=09
		RjS
	=09
	=09
	=09

The SIP Common Log File (CLF) working group is
chartered to define
		=09

a standard logging format for systems processing
SIP messages.
		=09

Well-known web servers such as Apache and web
proxies like Squid
		=09

support event logging using a common log format.
The logs produced
		=09

using these de-facto standard formats are
invaluable to system
		=09

administrators for trouble-shooting a server and
tool writers to
		=09

craft tools that mine the log files to produce
reports and trends
		=09

and to search for a certain SIP message or
messages, a transaction
		=09

or a related set of transactions. Furthermore,
these log records
		=09

can also be used to train anomaly detection
systems and feed events
		=09

into a security event management system.
		=09

The Session Initiation Protocol does not have a
common log
		=09

format. Diverse element provide distinct log
formats making
		=09

it complex to produce tools to analyze them.
		=09

The CLF working group will produce a format
suitable for logging
		=09

from any SIP element. The format will anticipate
the need to
		=09

search, merge, and summarize the log records
from diverse elements.
		=09

The format will anticipate the need to correlate
messages from
		=09

multiple elements related to a given request
(that may fork)
		=09

or a given dialog. The format will take SIP's
extensibility into
		=09

consideration, providing a way to represent SIP
message components
		=09

that are defined in the future. The format will
anticipate being
		=09

used both for off-line analysis and on-line
real-time processing
		=09

applications. The working group will consider
the need for
		=09

efficient processing in its design of this
format.
		=09

The working group is not pre-constrained to
producing either a
		=09

bit-field oriented or text-oriented format, and
may choose to
		=09

provide both. If the group chooses to specify
both, it must be
		=09

possible to mechanically translate between the
formats without
		=09

			loss of information.
		=09

			Specifying the mechanics of exchanging,
transporting, and storing
		=09

SIP Common Log Format records is explicitly out
of scope. Specifying
		=09

a real-time transfer mechanism for heuristic
analysis is explicitly
		=09

			out of scope.
		=09

			The group will generate:
		=09

			- A problem statement enunciating the
motivation,
		=09

and use cases for a SIP Common Log Format. This
analysis
		=09

will identify the required minimal information
that must
		=09

			appear in any record.
		=09

			- A specification of the SIP Common Log Format
record.
		=09

The group will consider providing one or more
reference
		=09

implementations for decoding a CLF record.
		=09

			Goals and Milestones

Hi all,
We uncovered an encoding error in Section 8.3, 'Figure T: Encoding
subTemplateMultiList, Data Set'. I have included the old and new
examples for your reference here, the new example uses 2 bytes for
encoding the 'Element n Length' as described in Section 4.4.3. A new
version of the draft with the example corrected will be posted after the
IETF meeting.=20

Hi,

during the OPSAWG meeting, the topic came up whether COPS-PR should be
classified as historic. RFC 2026 defines historic as follows:

A specification that has been superseded by a more recent
specification or is for any other reason considered to be obsolete is
assigned to the "Historic" level. (Purists have suggested that the
word should be "Historical"; however, at this point the use of
   "Historic" is historical.)

Note: Standards track specifications normally must not depend on
other standards track specifications which are at a lower maturity
level or on non standards track specifications other than referenced
specifications from other standards bodies. (See Section 7.)

Note that SNMPv1/SNMPv2c was made historic when SNMPv3 reached
the same maturity level and this was a clear statement that the
IETF won't develop SNMPv1/SNMPv2c further. Of course, this did
not make implementations go away and nobody really expected that.
But moving a protocol to historic makes it clear (to those who
care) that a protocol is considered a dead end and it explains
what to use instead.

Now that we have NETCONF in place and YANG almost in place, we
could start an action to move COPS-PR (RFC 3084) and at the same
time SPPI (RFC 3159) and the PIP modules (RFC 3317, RFC 3318, RFC
3571) to historic.

I am bringing this up here since I believe this might concern the OPS
area at large and not everybody might have been at the OPSAWG meeting.

Supported. I'm not sure if I've ever heard of COPS-PR being used in
operational environments except in some specialized setups.

I am in favor of moving these RFCs to historic.

I will make this call in the open area meeting later today, but I
thought it's good for folks to see this in advance and consider whether
they want to become involved. The MPLS-TP WG asked the OPS Area to
review a bunch of OAM documents which have obvious OPS implications. We
look for a volunteer in the OPS area - preferred with some experience
and background in MPLS and/or OAM - to step in for this position. This
does not mean that he or she will perform all reviews, but will be the
primary contact between the WG and our area.=20

Folks who are interested, please contact me or Ron.=20
