The IESG has received a request from the Operations and Management Area
Working Group WG (opsawg) to consider the following document:
- 'HMAC-SHA-2 Authentication Protocols in USM for SNMP'
  <draft-ietf-opsawg-hmac-sha-2-usm-snmp-05.txt> as Proposed Standard

The IESG plans to make a decision in the next few weeks, and solicits
final comments on this action. Please send substantive comments to the
ietf@ietf.org mailing lists by 2015-04-20. Exceptionally, comments may be
sent to iesg@ietf.org instead. In either case, please retain the
beginning of the Subject line to allow automated sorting.

Abstract

This memo specifies new HMAC-SHA-2 authentication protocols for the
User-based Security Model (USM) for SNMPv3 defined in RFC 3414.

Hi all,

Please take a look at "CAPWAP Control and Data Channel Separation for
Multi-provider Scenario"

This document was discussed somewhat at the face to face meeting in Dallas.
We have discussed this document with our ADs and have decided that it
is sufficiently different to the CAPWAP ALT Tunnel (which is with the
IESG), and that ALT Tunnel is sufficiently fgar in the process that we
will keep this document separate...

So, please take a look at it, and provide initial feedback We will
consider having a call for adoption if there is enough evidence of
interest....

I don't think the execution is relevant when it was obviously a bad
idea in the first place.
This is like putting rabid weasels in your pants, and later expressing
regret at having chosen those particular rabid weasels and that pair
of pants.

Document: draft-ietf-opsawg-hmac-sha-2-usm-snmp-05

Reviewer: Christer Holmberg

Review Date: 11 April 2015

IETF LC End Date: 20 April 2015

IETF Telechat Date: N/A

Summary: The document is well written, and almost ready for publicat=
ion. I do, however, have a couple of comments (see below).

Major Issues: None

Minor Issues:

Q1_10-1: In the IANA Considerations section, IANA is requested to register =
new values. However, it is not mentioned in which registry the new values w=
ill be registered.

Editorial nits:

Q1_GENERAL-1: Regarding reference, sometimes you say "RFC XXXX=
[RFCXXXX]", sometimes "RFC XXXX" and sometimes "[RFCXXXX]".

I think you should be consistent, and e.g. use "RFC XXXX [RFCXXXX]" on firs=
t occurrence, and then "RFC XXXX".

In some cases "[RFCXXXX]" is ok, though, e.g. in section 9.4 where you say =
"SNMP-USER-BASED-SM-MIB [RFC3414].".

I am the assigned Gen-ART reviewer for this draft. For background on
Gen-ART, please see the FAQ at
<http://wiki.tools.ietf.org/area/gen/trac/wiki/GenArtfaq>

Document:
draft-ietf-opsawg-hmac-sha-2-usm-snmp-05

Reviewer: Christer Holmberg

Review Date: 11 April 2015

IETF LC End Date: 20 April 2015

IETF Telechat Date: N/A

Summary: The document is well written, and almost ready for
publication. I do, however, have a couple of comments (see below).

Major Issues: None

Minor Issues:

Q1_10-1: In the IANA Considerations section, IANA is requested to
register new values. However, it is not mentioned in which registry the
new values will be registered.

<tp>

Christer

You puzzle me. When I look in the I-D I see

"IANA is requested to assign a value in the SnmpAuthProtocols registry "

which looks to me like a mention of which registry the new values will
be registered in.

Tom Petch

Editorial nits:

Q1_GENERAL-1: Regarding reference, sometimes you say "RFC
XXXX [RFCXXXX]", sometimes "RFC XXXX" and sometimes "[RFCXXXX]".

I think you should be consistent, and e.g. use "RFC XXXX [RFCXXXX]" on
first occurrence, and then "RFC XXXX".

In some cases "[RFCXXXX]" is ok, though, e.g. in section 9.4 where you
say "SNMP-USER-BASED-SM-MIB [RFC3414].".

I am the assigned Gen-ART reviewer for this draft. For background on
Gen-ART, please see the FAQ at
<http://wiki.tools.ietf.org/area/gen/trac/wiki/GenArtfaq>

Document:
draft-ietf-opsawg-hmac-sha-2-usm-snmp-05

Reviewer: Christer Holmberg

Review Date: 11 April 2015

IETF LC End Date: 20 April 2015

IETF Telechat Date: N/A

Summary: The document is well written, and almost ready for
publication. I do, however, have a couple of comments (see below).

Major Issues: None

Minor Issues:

Q1_10-1: In the IANA Considerations section, IANA is requested to
register new values. However, it is not mentioned in which registry the
new values will be registered.

<tp>

Christer

You puzzle me. When I look in the I-D I see

"IANA is requested to assign a value in the SnmpAuthProtocols registry "

which looks to me like a mention of which registry the new values will
be registered in.

Tom Petch

Editorial nits:

Q1_GENERAL-1: Regarding reference, sometimes you say "RFC
XXXX [RFCXXXX]", sometimes "RFC XXXX" and sometimes "[RFCXXXX]".

I think you should be consistent, and e.g. use "RFC XXXX [RFCXXXX]" on
first occurrence, and then "RFC XXXX".

In some cases "[RFCXXXX]" is ok, though, e.g. in section 9.4 where you
say "SNMP-USER-BASED-SM-MIB [RFC3414].".

Warren

I am used to seeing downrefs called out in the IETF Last Call notice.

This I-D certainly has them but the Last Call notice makes no mention of
them. Is this ok?

I believe so -- the document shepherd writeup has a specific section
for downrefs:
"(15) Are there downward normative references references (see RFC
3967)? If so, list these downward references to support the Area
Director in the Last Call procedure."

and the downrefs are listed in the full writeup:

"(15) Are there downward normative references references (see RFC 3967)?

** YES **

Normative reference to an Informational RFC 2104 Non-RFC normative reference
'SHA' Normative reference to an Informational RFC 6234

RFC 2104 and RFC 6234 are in the downregreg (which is currently throwing 500
Errors) SHA references: National Institute of Standards and Technology,
"Secure Hash Standard (SHS)", FIPS PUB 180-4, March 2012. Note that RFC2014
and RFC6234 also reference versions of this document.
"

I do not think that the downrefs (especially ones that are well known)
are usually listed in the LC.

I don't think the execution is relevant when it was obviously a bad
idea in the first place.
This is like putting rabid weasels in your pants, and later expressing
regret at having chosen those particular rabid weasels and that pair
of pants.

Dear Community,

after posting of version 00 of the approach for Standardized Parameterization of Intrusion Detection Entities I got positive feedback and some suggestions to improve the interoperability with other standards. So I update the Internet Draft and post a new version.

I am looking forward to your suggestions, feedback, notations, hints, recommendations, etc. to improve the Internet Draft for standardized Intrusion Detection Parametrization. The updated version of the Internet Draft could be found at:

http://www.ietf.org/id/draft-boesch-idxp-idpef-01.txt

I looking forward to a lively discussion.

Kind regards,

B.-C. Boesch

I gave this a little (not a lot) of thought during the ad review.

My interpretation was that downrefs to rfc 2104 are sufficiently
ubiquiious to not merit further discussion let alone further review. if
that's not an universaly held opinion I suppose we should hear that.

both it and 6234 have visited the downref registry previously in 2104's
case there are something like 200 references to it from subsequent RFCs.

if the secdir would like to start a shooting war over references to HMAC
(which I doubt) I'll respect that but it's not really my wheelhouse.

thanks

The Control and Provisioning of Wireless Access Points (CAPWAP)
protocol binding for IEEE 802.11 defines two Medium Access Control
(MAC) modes for IEEE 802.11 Wireless Transmission Points (WTPs):
Split and Local MAC. In the Split MAC mode, the partitioning of
encryption/decryption functions is not clearly defined. In the Split
MAC mode description, IEEE 802.11 encryption is specified as located
in either the Access Controller (AC) or the WTP, with no clear way
for the AC to inform the WTP of where the encryption functionality
should be located. This leads to interoperability issues, especially
when the AC and WTP come from different vendors. To prevent
interoperability issues, this specification defines an IEEE 802.11
MAC Profile message element in which each profile specifies an
unambiguous division of encryption functionality between the WTP and
AC.

This document is a product of the Operations and Management Area Working Group Working Group of the IETF.

This is now a Proposed Standard.

STANDARDS TRACK: This document specifies an Internet Standards Track
protocol for the Internet community, and requests discussion and suggestions
for improvements. Please refer to the current edition of the Official
Internet Protocol Standards (https://www.rfc-editor.org/standards) for the
standardization state and status of this protocol. Distribution of this
memo is unlimited.

This announcement is sent to the IETF-Announce and rfc-dist lists.

another suggestion:

I'd linke to change the title from

HMAC-SHA-2 Authentication Protocols in USM for SNMP

to

HMAC-SHA-2 Authentication Protocols in USM for SNMPv3
                                                    ^^
Do you agree?

	Date : 2015-04-26

Abstract:
Control And Provisioning of Wireless Access Points (CAPWAP) defines a
specification to encapsulate a station's data frames between the
Wireless Transmission Point (WTP) and Access Controller (AC).
Specifically, the station's IEEE 802.11 data frames can be either
locally bridged or tunneled to the AC. When tunneled, a CAPWAP data
channel is used for tunneling. In many deployments encapsulating
data frames to an entity other than the AC (for example to an Access
Router (AR)) is desirable. Further, it may also be desirable to use
different tunnel encapsulations to carry the stations' data frames.
This document provides a specification for this and refers to it as
Alternate tunnel encapsulation. The Alternate tunnel encapsulation
allows 1) the WTP to tunnel non-management data frames to an endpoint
different from the AC and 2) the WTP to tunnel using one of many
known encapsulation types such as IP-IP, IP-GRE, CAPWAP. The WTP may
advertise support for Alternate tunnel encapsulation during the
discovery or join process and AC may select one of the supported
Alternate Tunnel encapsulation types while configuring the WTP.

I'd linke to change the title from

to

                                                    ^^ Do you agree?

Dear community,

I have post the attached draft and looking for feedback from people with
security management and / or security (IDS) operations expertise
(including IDS developer). I am particularly interested in your opinions
on the communication proceedings, the parametrization methodology and
the provided attributes (and such I did not think of). If the text needs
updating by your point of view, please let me know that as well. Here is
the link to the new draft:

http://www.ietf.org/id/draft-boesch-idxp-idpef-01.txt

At the first view the draft looks very long but after page 44 a lot of
examples and definitions are included for better understanding. So the

Abstract

The Intrusion Detection Parametrization Exchange Format (IDPEF) defines
data formats and exchange procedures to standardize parametrization
information exchange into intrusion detection and response systems from
an independent central Manager to any Analyzer. The IDPEF enables a
combination of different (vendor and analyzing technique) IDS Analyzers
under one independent central Manager. A separate operations of IDS is
not longer needed. Base is a new parametrization methodology where IDS
operating parameters (configurations) are separated in an environmental
parametrization part and a vendor-specific analyzing part.

This Internet-Draft describes a data model to represent parametrization
information of intrusion detection system entities, and explains the
rationale for using this model. An implementation of the data model in
the Extensible Markup Language (XML) is presented, a XML Document Type
Definition is developed, and parametrization examples are provided.

I am looking forward to your suggestions, feedback, notations, hints,
recommendations, etc. to improve the Internet Draft. Also native speaker
feedback with scope on wording and typo is welcome.

Kind regards,

Bjoern-C.

Hi -

Has there been some discussion of the reasons why this work
doesn't emply one of the established management information
data modeling languages, such as Yang or SNMP SMI?
