Dear sub-group,

in order to take a step forward, I collected the results of the initial opinion poll on p2p mobility to compile a very first, tentative structure with suggested research directions (still very high-level). It takes into account and reflects what has been named by our subgroup participants, i.e. their research interests and current/past activities.

It does not look like very much yet, but it should serve the purpose of getting into discussions again and to generate a common viewing angle on the subject. I will be happy to be the moderator.

I did check with the descriptions of the other subgroups and tried my best to stay clear of too many overlaps. It is evident, however, that we relate to the routing subgroup.

It would be nice if everybody who volunteered for participation in the mobility subgroup could give their comments to the attached small text. Don't hesitate to use the "comment" mechanism in WORD. We may also switch to other forms of collaborative online work, such as writable web mechanisms (e.g. webdav, cvs, etc.).

My understanding is that we are not by all means trying to do a brand new design for a p2p system yet (see the charter). Instead, what we will do is to start by analysis, and then to switch over to find solutions or enhancements eventually. So, if we can agree on this (or a refined, advanced) version of the attached, proposed structure, then our next step _might_ be the collection of mobile device requirements and mobile infrastructure limitations that specifically affect p2p.

btw. a short time ago the IRTF announced the start of a dedicated IP mobility optimizations group http://www.irtf.org/charters/mobopts.html . If we ever come to a point where we need extensions to e.g. mobile-ip for p2p, this might be a place where we can find people to discuss it with.

I wish everybody a successful new year,

Frank-Uwe

p.s. Cheers to Luca for a well-done article in the "p2p journal"!

Dear Frank-Uwe and all,
please find attached some taughts about p2p mobility. They are provided in a
separate txt file. They are provided as a "starting point" and maybe they
will be integrated with the document provided by Frank-Uwe. At this stage, I
fully agree with the proposed organization.

[CUT]

Don't hesitate to use the "comment" mechanism in WORD. We may also switch to
other forms of collaborative online work, such as writable web mechanisms
(e.g. webdav, cvs, etc.).

[CUT]

If they are reasonable and interesting I'll update Frank-Uwe's document.

Best regards,

Luca

> p.s. Cheers to Luca for a well-done article in the "p2p journal"!

ehehe, thank you very much! I hope to write some papers with you and the
other members in the future!

p2p Mobility: some taughts from Luca=20

Here you will find some possible topics for p2p mobility. Of course, it =
will be a long-term run: they are only intended to be an "immediate" =
feedback to Frank-Uwe. =20

Mobility is often achieved by using a non-wired physical medium. =
Wireless technologies on one hand introduce some benefits and on the =
other hand present some trivial characteristics. The major problem =
arises because:

The bandwidth availability could vary during the connection lifetime.=20

The traffic flow (e.g. a TCP stream) could be influenced by a heavy BER =
pattern.

Due to mobility, connection could be intermittent or impeded for a =
period (that could be long).

Broadcast based medium introduces both security and privacy hazards: =
malicious information could be inserted in the p2p-networked =
infrastructure (actually, this issue will be discussed in the security =
subgroup but I think it will reflect in some requirement within =
p2p-mdr). Probably some authentications mechanism must be introduced in =
mobile devices.=20

Mobility is often related to handheld devices such as, phones, PDAs =85 =
limited storage capacity and limited computational resources should be =
taken into account.=20

Mobile nodes should implement something caching techniques to deliver =
data to impeded ones. In this perspective, will a =93caching sub-section =
specification=94 useful?=20

	x.	Mobile Node Cache
		a.	Data Caching
		b.	Route Caching
		c.	Query Caching
		d.	Proxy based entry point providing
		=85
		=85

I think that some requirements will be tightly coupled with the =93p2p =
Overlay Infrastructure=94 and with the =93Meta-Data strategies=94. =
Infrastructure will reflect in protocol requirements due to interaction =
with other actors, while Meta-Data will reflect in the overall =
=93protocol-tree=94 and maybe in some mandatory middleware piece.=20

Again, =93p2p Overlay Infrastructure=94 will reflect in some mandatory =
requirement for mobile devices. Taking inspiration from JXTA, we can =
envisage some differentiated core requirements related to the mobile =
nodes=92categorization: peer resolvers, pipe binder =85=20

Mobility support concerns also naming issues. Naming support will be =
provided by some kind of authority or in a cooperative-flat fashion. The =
two approaches reflect in different mobile requirements. =20

Will a mobile node act as a rendezvous point? Rendezvous will imply two =
main branches in requirements:

	y.	Requirements for Mobile Rendezvous
		a.	To allow initial connections
		b.	To resolve the loss of connectivity due to simultaneous movements. =

		c.	To implement =93data-push=94.=20

In addition, some investigation in the software architecture should be =
envisaged. IMHO, a minimal layered architecture should be analyzed =
(e.g., mobile context, background agents =85).=20

Hello, Andersen.

I want to modify two categories related to ad-hoc network as following.

.Ad-hoc networks
1. pure ad-hoc : infrastructureless
2. with internet connectivity (including mobility management with
SIP/MIP)

As you know, MANET itself originally is devised to allow mobile devices
to communication each other without infrastructure(AP etc.). Although
Internet connectivity seems to be accepted as an important
research(engineering) topic in MANET area, the most important design
requirement is that the support of Internet connectivity should be based
on original(basic) purpuse, assumptions(related to glboal addresses),
functionality(mainly routing protocol) of ad hoc networking.

So, I suggest two items. The first one is "pure ad-hoc network". Under
this, we should question if the state of art architectures of P2P system
can work well or even in tolerable manner unner MANET environment. If
not, we should clearly define the problems which may be due to just
frequent topology changes or routing protocols or P2P system itself. I
suggest P2P routing enhancement under MANET routing protocols and the
support of MANET routing protocols through MANET API. Or we can consider
new architecture which has its own dedicated routing mechanism in order
to work without MANET routing protocol running. Also, co-opration with
reactive/proactive routing protocols should be taken account.

Second is related to internet connectivity. At this stage, I do not see
any clear goals coupled with P2P. MANET protocols(routing, internet
connecvity) only provide upper layers as well as MIP/SIP with the
transparency of frequent topology changes. In other words, MIP view a
multipop path to a GW as just one link. In this sense, the first item
"cellular environment" seems to be sufficient. Anyway, this is just my
point.

Thanks,

HyunWook Cha

Frank-Uwe,
this is a good starting point, and should take us quite a bit into the mobile domain. However, as a general comment, I think the list is a bit skimpy in the mobile optimizations department. The messaging between peers can be done in several ways, some of which will e.g. tolerate more latency and be less sensitive to disconnections than others. This type of aspects is what I would look for in the result of this sub-group.

IMHO, a section on protocol design (in cellular as well as ad-hoc networks) would be desirable.

Also, I think we should define a track on "mobile optimizations" under Content and services. We can either explain how each content/service we develop is mobile optimized, or we can come up with a set of generic guidelines. I would prefer the latter.

Also, I would like a section on "interfacing non-mobile networks". This comes from our work in proxying, and I would suggest that this goes under the "application" section. There can be a set of generic recommendations for proxies, as well as a set of specifics.

I do not understand why you are highlighting SIP/MIP, perhaps you could explain?

Why do you see ontological routing as a specifically mobile aspect? I would have thought this would go into some generic topology/routing group.

I look forward to version 2.0, on which I am sure to have some more comments...

Johan

This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your ietf.org mailing
list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how to use
it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, p2prg-request@ietf.org) containing just the
word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent to
you with instructions.

Folk:

Greetings. I come bearing mailing lists: the subgroup lists are
ready.

The mailing lists are of the form:

  p2prg-[X]@cs.umd.edu

where [X] \in {mobility, metadata, drlp, security, apps, overlay}.

There is a web page for each of the lists at:
     http://www.cs.umd.edu/mailman/listinfo/p2prg-[X]

Users can subscribe, unsubscribe, and change preferences from these
pages. There is also an email-based interface. You can get
information about using the email interface sending a message with
just the word 'help' as subject or in the body, to:

     p2prg-[X]-request@cs.umd.edu

Right now, I have added some default admins; we'll be adding subgroup
leaders as admins.

Please subscribe to appropriate lists, and I hope we can start using
these to their full effect soon.

Bill and Bobby.

p.s.
Just to ensure I have not confused anyone with my notation, the
"mobility" list would be accessible via

p2prg-mobility@cs.umd.edu

Note also that our usual irtf hosted list will also remain active.

Hi All,

Many thanks to Bobby for the new lists. I'm subscribed to
p2prg-metadata, and I hope others will join.

Since that might take a while I thought I'd just post an introductory
mail to both the main list and the meta-data list. In future I'll just
post to the meta-data list.

So the concept for the meta-data subgroup comes to a certain extent from
a review paper I published last year:

http://search.ieice.org/2003/pdf/e86-b_6_1740.pdf

Due to a problem with proof reading the abstract came through in rather
odd English, but I hope you'll forgive that and read on. Here's an
excerpt from the introduction:

"Recent developments in peer-to-peer networks have centered on the
concept of distributed hashtables (DHT) or content routing. These
approaches assume possession of a hash or other identifier that
precisely specifies the document the user wishes to retrieve. Naturally
there are some situations in which a user only has more general
information about their needs, e.g. keywords or other meta-data. A
number of different strategies for handling this kind of search in
peer-to-peer networks have recently come to light [and are described
herein]."

So meta-data strategies is all about trying to deal with data that
imprecisely defines the things we are searching for. To my mind it also
encapsulated issues of trust and reputation, because the crucial thing
about an open p2p system is that everyone can publish meta-data and
no-one gets to vet it for accuracy; at least not at the moment it is
published. Trust or reputation ratings assigned to peers or files in a
p2p network can be thought of as a kind of meta-data, and so I am
currently trying to assemble a list of different p2p reputation
systems. You can see my ongoing notes and listing here:

http://www.neurogrid.net/twiki/bin/view/Main/ReputationAndTrust

It's all a bit rough, but then it's a wiki, so anyone who wants to dive
in and help me organise all this, I would be most grateful. One day it
might become another review paper on p2p reputation :-) Co-authors would
be most welcome.

I think my ongoing objectives are to try and classify all the different
approaches to meta-data, trust and reputation in different p2p systems.
Ultimately I'd like to try and move towards some standardized ways of
publishing meta-data. However in the first instance I think a
taxonomical approach is the best to try and help us all get a feel for
what is on offer in this developing field.

My own review of MetaData strategies is in all likelihood out of data
already, so let's see what we can do to keep ourselves up to date. I
think a good short term goal would be to put together a list of relevant
publications on the wiki - ideally with notes and comments hidden one
layer down.

Comments, thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Guys, is it just me or has access to the subgroups been blocked? I've
subscribed to the sub-groups of course but on trying to access the
archives, I keep getting this message for each group respectively
(shouldn't it display a blank message board if there aren't any
messages?):

Hi Dishyant,

It would appear that the archiving features for the lists were not turned
on by default, and that the software is just not failing gracefully
when the archives do not exist. I have turned on arching for the lists,
and will take a look into it making it more graceful.

Let me know if you have any other concerns,

- Rob

There should be at least one message on the metadata subgroup list,
judging from the message posted by Sam Joseph. But I can't even see that
message and receive the same error message when I try to access the
metadata subgroup archive. However, it's probably because the archiving
feature wasn't turned on that even the single post on p2prg-metadata
wasn't showing up...

I have tweaked the settings and sent a test message to p2prg-overlay,
and now I am able to get the archives. Please verify for me that you
also see my test message through the archives, and I will propagate the
change to the other lists.

Sorry for the problems,

I still get the same "archive file not found" message actually. And I'm
using someone else's computer to access the p2prg-metadata list this time,
so there isn't any issue of browser caching.

Sorry that I wasn't clear, but I did it specifically for the
p2prg-overlay, which is where I thought you had the original problem.
I just wanted to make sure it was working correctly, before I changed all
of the other lists. I have done the same change to the metadata list, so
please check again to see if you can see my post. Once I have it verified
that it works, I can try to retroactively add Sam Josephs original post.

Ah, my apologies. Yes, it works now! For both overlay and metadata.
However, the metadata doesn't show Sam Joseph's message. I'm assuming
it wasn't recorded because archiving was turned off at the time he sent
the message?

He actually resent it on his own, so everything should be working now.

Thanks, and let me know if you see any additional problems,

Hello there,

So, we have the mailing lists in place, and all is set for discussions.

Let's get on with joining the appropriate lists, and doing some good
research!

CALL FOR PAPERS
European Transactions on Telecommunications (ETT)

Special Issue on P2P Networking and P2P Services

Peer-to-peer (P2P) services have evolved to the most popular
applications
in today's Internet. Remarkably, only very simple protocols and almost
no
support by the transport network were needed to make these distributed
services
operable on a large scale in little time.
P2P entails a highly attractive paradigm in distributed computing: P2P
is based
on communication between equals. The peers are highly autonomous. P2P
services
provide simple and efficient mechanisms to pool and share exchangeable
resources
like CPU cycles, disk space or content. These features allow that any
peer can
be removed without resulting in a complete loss of service, in contrast
to the
traditional client/server concept where a failure of the central entity
may
corrupt the service completely. A P2P mode of operation, however, also
has some
downsides. P2P protocols cause high traffic volumes, including data
traffic as
well as signaling traffic. P2P network topologies reveal a high
variability and
P2P traffic patterns of P2P applications fluctuate strongly in time and
space. It
is anticipated that traditional network design techniques and traffic
engineering
procedures may not longer be applicable. New methods are needed that
maintain
the autonomous and self-organizing characteristics of P2P in order to
provide
appropriate service stability, quality, and efficiency.

The focus of the special issue of ETT will include (but is not limited
to) the
following topics (see also
http://www-info3.informatik.uni-wuerzburg.de/staff/tutschku/ETTCFPP2P.pd
f ):

- P2P applications and services

Hi all,

I'm personally interested in trust, rights and policy managment, mobile
code, agents. As Jean-Henry (
https://www1.ietf.org/mail-archive/working-groups/p2prg/current/msg00145.html
), I believe that the combination of these topics with P2P raise new
interresting issues and challenges. Thus I would be happy to help in the
security track.

Folks,

LimeWire has a few openings for high quality software developers. We are
looking for the usual rare suspects with good OOA/OOD skills, Java
experience, networking, threads, etc. LimeWire is one of the few successful
Java and P2P software shops so the work tends to be interesting. All
amazing developers and P2P enthusiasts (combined) are very welcome!

See here for more information:
http://www.limewire.com/english/content/careers.shtml

Bonus points for anyone involved in limewire.org.

Apologies if I am breaking list etiquette; however, the P2P world is so
small that I'm sure some members of the list (or their talented friends or
colleagues) might be interested.

Thanks
-greg
