There's a relatively light support of these drafts but no opposition
and we clearly need MIBs for PCE discovery.
Emile, could you re-publish both I-Ds as WG documents?
Furthermore, I would suggest you to pool the WG on the various
related items that were discussed in San diego for which you asked
for WG feed-back.

Thanks.

JP and Adrian.

Hi,

We have received a communication from the OIF regarding their Carrier
Working Group Requirements Document for Multi Domain Intelligent Optical
Networks.

The communication and the current requirement document can be found on the
CCAMP (sic) alternative Web pages at www.olddog.co.uk/ccamp.htm. The text of
the covering letter can be seen below.

The OIF do not specifically ask us to perform any actions, but I am sure
they would welcome any review comments that you might have. These can be
sent direct or sent to the mailing list in which case JP and I will send a
response.

Thanks,
Adrian

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts=20
directories.

Title : A BGP based method to compute inter-AS Traffic
engineering Label Switched Paths with PCE=20
	Author(s)	: C. Vijayanand, S. Bhattacharya
	Filename	: draft-vijay-somen-pce-bgp-interas-te-path-00.txt

The ability to compute an optimal path for setting up Traffic=20
engineering Label Switched Paths spanning multiple autonomous=20
systems managed by different operators has been a key requirement in=20
MPLS and GMPLS networks. This document specifies a method of=20
computing inter-AS paths consisting of a list of ASes to be=20
traversed and a list of FA-LSPs to be traversed in each AS. The=20
method described here uses BGP running in the PCEs of each AS to=20
distribute the inter-AS connectivity information and the FA-LSPs in=20
each AS to its neighbors to facilitate the construction of an inter-
AS topology graph which can be used for computing inter-AS paths.=20

or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

I'll ask JP to arbitrate and handle whether this becomes a WG I-D.

a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split

Hi Emile,

Thanks for this message. I have gone through this thread and the existing
MIBs. I have listed my comments/observations below:

1. In general, we do not include "STD" for a draft MIB. Only
when they are about to become RFC, we call them STD.

Before becoming an RFC we have "DRAFT" for the MIBs.
This way if some companies want to implement the draft versions
and later want to upgrade to standard versions do not have a name
clash with the OIDs.

2. I agree with most of your decomposition.
However, I want to propose :
PCEP-DRAFT-MIB draft-ietf-pcep-mib

instead of
PCE-COMP-STD-MIB draft-ietf-pce-comp-mib

This will give a clear idea to the user on what the MIB contains.

So the new decomposition looks like:
MIB module WG draft name
================================================
PCE-DISC-DRAFT-MIB draft-ietf-pce-disc-mib
 -- PCE discovery MIB.

PCEP-DRAFT-MIB draft-ietf-pcep-mib
 -- PCE communication protocol MIB

PCE-PCC-DRAFT-MIB draft-ietf-pce-pcc-mib
 -- Path Computation Client MIB

PCE-TC-DRAFT-MIB draft-ietf-pce-tc-mib
 -- PCE Textual conventions MIB.

3. I see that the SMIv2 structures of the existing MIB modules
need to be fixed and SMIC utility must be run. I can take care of that.

4. I will also start working on the PCEP-MIB for which you will
be my co-author.

Please let me know if you have any more comments/observations? I
intend to start working on these soon.

Regards,
Kiran.

Subject: PCE MIB modules

Hi Kiran, Adrian and JP

I am really happy that Kiran join us. I am sure that we are going to do
excellent works together... and that there is enough work for 2 people.

So let's start.

In July we identify the following MIB modules decomposition.

MIB module WG draft name
================================================
PCE-DISC-STD-MIB draft-ietf-pce-disc-mib
PCE-COMP-STD-MIB draft-ietf-pce-comp-mib
PCE-PCC-STD-MIB draft-ietf-pce-pcc-mib
PCE-TC-STD-MIB draft-ietf-pce-tc-mib

draft-ietf-pce-disc-mib and draft-ietf-pce-tc-mib are already in progress.

As JP spoke recently of a "PCEP MIB", I want to be sure that we still agree on
this decomposition?

Then I propose to draft the abstract of each document conjointly with the
chairs.

Finally, I think that we may identify the drafts and the sections giving
directions to write each MIB module.

At this point, each of us will share the minimal understanding before writing
any SMI line.

Regards
Emile

Subject: RE: PCE MIB modules names

Hi Adrian,

I think we got it:

MIB module WG draft name
================================================
PCE-DISC-STD-MIB draft-ietf-pce-disc-mib
PCE-COMP-STD-MIB draft-ietf-pce-comp-mib
PCE-PCC-STD-MIB draft-ietf-pce-pcc-mib
PCE-TC-STD-MIB draft-ietf-pce-tc-mib

According to that I will firstly review and rename my current draft as
draft-stephan-pce-disc-mib-00.txt. Then I will create
draft-stephan-pce-tc-mib-00.txt. Finally I will post both of them.

Regards
Emile

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the Path Computation Element Working Group of the IETF.

Title : IS-IS protocol extensions for Path Computation Element (PCE) Discovery
	Author(s)	: J. Le Roux, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-pce-disco-proto-isis-01.txt
	Pages : 22
	Date : 2006-12-12

There are various circumstances where it is highly desirable for a
Path Computation Client (PCC) to be able to dynamically and
automatically discover a set of Path Computation Element(s) (PCE),
along with some of information that can be used for PCE selection.
When the PCE is a Label Switch Router (LSR) participating to the IGP,
or even a server participating passively to the IGP, a simple and

efficient way for PCE discovery consists of relying on IGP flooding.
For that purpose this document defines IS-IS extensions for the
advertisement of PCE Discovery information within an IS-IS area or
within the entire IS-IS routing domain.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:

In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-pce-disco-proto-isis-01.txt".

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

automatically discover a set of Path Computation Element(s) (PCE),
along with some of information that can be used for PCE selection.
When the PCE is a Label Switch Router (LSR) participating to the IGP,
or even a server participating passively to the IGP, a simple and
efficient way for PCE discovery consists of relying on IGP flooding.
For that purpose this document defines OSPF extensions for the
advertisement of PCE Discovery information within an OSPF area or
within the entire OSPF routing domain.

Hi all,

Here are the minor changes in these new revisions (ISIS and OSPF):
-The security section has been detailed
-Added considerations on hierarchical TLVs
-Identification of PCED and PCES: the same IP address must be used
-A few minor edits for the sake of clarity

Regards,

JL

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the Path Computation Element Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Path Computation Element (PCE) communication Protocol (PCEP) - Version 1
	Author(s)	: J. Le Roux, J. Vasseur
	Filename	: draft-ietf-pce-pcep-04.txt
	Pages : 66
	Date : 2006-12-13

This document specifies the Path Computation Element communication
Protocol (PCEP) for communications between a Path Computation Client
(PCC) and a Path Computation Element (PCE), or between two PCEs.
Such interactions include path computation requests and path
computation replies as well as notifications of specific states
related to the use of a PCE in the context of MPLS and GMPLS Traffic
Engineering. The PCEP protocol is designed to be flexible and
extensible so as to easily allow for the addition of further messages
and objects, should further requirements be expressed in the future.

Yes this information can be made available with the discovery protocol, =
see [RFC4674] section 4.1.1.2.

We can rephrase as follows:

"The knowledge of the areas in which the source and destination lie=20
would allow selection of appropriate cooperating PCEs. This would be =
useful when the area ID(s) of a PCE (i.e. the area(s) where it has =
visibility) is/are known, which can be achieved by the PCE Discovery =
Protocol (see [RFC4674]) or any other mean."

OK we can rephrase as follows

"A PCE in a PCE chain, may not have any visibility of the =
source/destination area and hence may not be able to determine the area =
of the source/destination"=20

> =20
> For that purpose the request message MUST support the inclusion of=20

Why do you need such assurance?
I don't catch your point here.

>- we're entering into a chicken=20
> egg problem, from one side mandate knowledge of=20
> source/destination area

We don't mandate knowledge of src/dest area. We say "the request message =
MUST support the inclusion", we don't say "MUST include"

> but on the other there is no=20
> guarantee about interpretation of this information before=20
> knowing the PCC - area ID relationship

Here we simply ask the PCECP to support the inclusion of source and =
destination area IDs in the request.
When this information is known by the PCC (through configuration or any =
other means), then it may be included in the request message, and this =
may facilitate selection of downstream PCEs.

Yes it is, will be reworded as follows.

"It may be useful that the request message indicate one or more area(s) =
that must be followed by the path to be computed.
It may also be useful that the request message indicate one or more =
area(s) that must be avoided by the path to be computed."

>=20

>=20

Yes a loop avoidance mechanism will be needed, independantly of this =
area inclusion/exclusion by the way.
I don't think this requires any specific text here.

This refers to link, node, SRLG diversity of a set of paths.

We can add the following

set of computed inter-area loose paths (link, node, SRLG diversity), =
globally and on a per-area basis (link, node, SRLG diversity of =
intra-area path segments).=20

It refers to the diversity of a set of paths. I agree that this is not =
clear.

Will rephrase as follows

"It MUST allow indicating the required level of diversity of a set of =
inter-area paths (link, node, SRLG diversity), as well as the required =
level of diversity of a set of intra-area segments of inter-area =
paths(link, node, SRLG diversity) on a per-area basis.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the Path Computation Element Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : A Backward Recursive PCE-based Computation
(BRPC) procedure to compute shortest inter-
domain Traffic Engineering Label Switched Paths
	Author(s)	: J. Vasseur
	Filename	: draft-ietf-pce-brpc-02.txt
	Pages : 16
	Date : 2006-12-15

The ability to compute constrained shortest Traffic Engineering (TE)
Label Switched Paths (LSPs) in Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)
and Generalized MPLS (GMPLS) networks across multiple domains (where
a domain is referred to as a collection of network elements within a
common sphere of address management or path computational
responsibility such as IGP areas and Autonomous Systems) has been
identified as a key requirement . This document specifies a
procedure relying on the use of multiple Path Computation Elements
(PCEs) in order to compute such inter-domain shortest constraint
paths along a determined sequence of domains, using a backward
recursive path computation technique while preserving confidentiality
across domains, which is sometimes required when domains are managed
   by different Service Providers.

Dear WG,

Just a quick update on this rev-04 of PCEP and rev-02 of the BRPC
IDs. In the previous revision of PCEP, in case of unsuccesful path
computation, the PCE had the ability to indicate the constraint(s)
that could not be satisfied when the path computation failure was due
to the inability to find a path satisfying the constraints. But if
the cause of path computation failure is non related to the
constraints (e.g. PCE unavailable, Unknown destination, ...) there
was no way to indicate such failure cause. Thus we simply defined a
new optional TLV (32-bit flags) named the NO-PATH-VECTOR TLV carried
within the NO-PATH object to support that feature. In the case of the
BRPC procedure, one possible cause of path computation failure that
falls into this category could be the unavailability of a downstream
PCE. Thus, we define a new bit for the NO-PATH-VECTOR TLV in draft-
ietf-pce-brpc-02.txt to report such failure case.

Thanks.

JP.

Yes this information can be made available with the discovery protocol,=20
see [RFC4674] section 4.1.1.2.

We can rephrase as follows:

"The knowledge of the areas in which the source and destination lie=20
would allow selection of appropriate cooperating PCEs. This would be=20
useful when the area ID(s) of a PCE (i.e. the area(s) where it has=20
visibility) is/are known, which can be achieved by the PCE Discovery=20
Protocol (see [RFC4674]) or any other mean."

OK we can rephrase as follows

"A PCE in a PCE chain, may not have any visibility of the=20
source/destination area and hence may not be able to determine the area=20
of the source/destination"=20

>=20
> For that purpose the request message MUST support the inclusion of=20

>=20

Why do you need such assurance?

[dp] because the PCC itself may be an area where PCE learning and PCC
learning are not identical (PCC knows less than the PCE)

I don't catch your point here.

[dp] but this can also happen in the other way around, the issue is=20
that this information is provided as helper to the PCE looking at the
different cases we've at hand even if this information is provided it
does not still guarantee that the "local PCE" will be able to determine
the location of the destination and hence the next/downstream PCE

>- we're entering into a chicken=20
> egg problem, from one side mandate knowledge of=20
> source/destination area

We don't mandate knowledge of src/dest area. We say "the request message=20
MUST support the inclusion", we don't say "MUST include"

> but on the other there is no=20
> guarantee about interpretation of this information before=20
> knowing the PCC - area ID relationship

Here we simply ask the PCECP to support the inclusion of source and=20
destination area IDs in the request.
When this information is known by the PCC (through configuration or any=20
other means), then it may be included in the request message, and this may =

facilitate selection of downstream PCEs.

Yes it is, will be reworded as follows.

"It may be useful that the request message indicate one or more area(s)=20
that must be followed by the path to be computed.
It may also be useful that the request message indicate one or more=20
area(s) that must be avoided by the path to be computed."

Yes a loop avoidance mechanism will be needed, independantly of this area=20
inclusion/exclusion by the way.
I don't think this requires any specific text here.

[dp] shouldn't that specific text be included in the document, as it is=20
meant to cover both PCC-PCE and PCE-PCE messaging ?

[dp] in theory yes, in practice not - just think upon the case where a=20
single entity borrows fibers from two different plants each of them having =

chosen different SRLG IDs for two fibers lying in the same duct -=20

This refers to link, node, SRLG diversity of a set of paths.

We can add the following

"The response message MUST allow indicating the level of diversity of a=20
set of computed inter-area loose paths (link, node, SRLG diversity),=20
globally and on a per-area basis (link, node, SRLG diversity of intra-area =

path segments).=20

>=20

It refers to the diversity of a set of paths. I agree that this is not=20
clear.

Will rephrase as follows

"It MUST allow indicating the required level of diversity of a set of=20
inter-area paths (link, node, SRLG diversity), as well as the required=20
level of diversity of a set of intra-area segments of inter-area=20
paths(link, node, SRLG diversity) on a per-area basis.

Thanks a lot for your comments Dimitri.
Let us know if the proposed text is fine with you and we will submit a new =

revision.

JL

Again, we don't mandate the inclusion of source/dest area IDs in any =
request.
In situations where the PCC is aware of this information this may be =
useful to include it in the request.=20

If the request includes the destination area, then the PCE becomes aware =
of it, it can then select a downstream PCE based on advertised PCE =
information (PCE areas).

OK, we can add the following section

4.9 Loop Avoidance

In case of multiple-PCE inter-area path computation there may be risks =
of PCECP request loops.
A mechanism MUST be defined to detect and supress PCECP request message =
loops. This may rely, for instance, on the recording, in the request =
message, of the set of traversed PCEs.=20
Also the returned path in a response message MUST be loop free.

Would such a section make sense to you?

But when you build SRLGs for an IP network you also account for the =
ducts.
By the way you can be aware of the duct that is actually used, even if =
the fiber is rent (this can be provided in the contract).

Anyway, a requirement for SRLG diverse path computation makes the =
assumption of consistent SRLGs...and there is nothing specific to the =
PCE nor to the inter-area case here.

Thanks,

JL

hi jean-louis

i think we're converging beside one point about section 4.5 & 4.6=20
as indicated here below=20

edit: on the SRLG comment for ensuring some level of consistency=20
identifiers should assigned and allocated from the same entity -=20
this would solve the issue mentioned

thanks,
- d.

Again, we don't mandate the inclusion of source/dest area IDs in any=20
request.
In situations where the PCC is aware of this information this may be=20
useful to include it in the request.=20

If the request includes the destination area, then the PCE becomes aware=20
of it, it can then select a downstream PCE based on advertised PCE=20
information (PCE areas).

OK, we can add the following section

4.9 Loop Avoidance

In case of multiple-PCE inter-area path computation there may be risks of=20
PCECP request loops.
A mechanism MUST be defined to detect and supress PCECP request message=20
loops. This may rely, for instance, on the recording, in the request=20
message, of the set of traversed PCEs.=20
Also the returned path in a response message MUST be loop free.

Would such a section make sense to you?

But when you build SRLGs for an IP network you also account for the ducts.
By the way you can be aware of the duct that is actually used, even if the =

fiber is rent (this can be provided in the contract).

Anyway, a requirement for SRLG diverse path computation makes the=20
assumption of consistent SRLGs...and there is nothing specific to the PCE=20
nor to the inter-area case here.

Thanks,

JL

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the Path Computation Element Working Group of the IETF.

Title : PCE Communication Protocol (PCECP) Specific
                          Requirements for Inter-Area Multi Protocol
Label Switching (MPLS) and Generalized MPLS (GMPLS) Traffic Engineering
	Author(s)	: J. Le Roux, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-pce-pcecp-interarea-reqs-05.txt
	Pages : 11
	Date : 2006-12-29

For scalability purposes a network may comprise multiple Interior
Gateway Protocol (IGP) areas. An inter-area Traffic Engineered-Label
Switched Path (TE-LSP) is an LSP that transits through at least two
IGP areas. In a multi-area network, topology visibility remains local
to a given area, and a head-end Label Switching Router (LSR) cannot
compute an inter-area shortest constrained path. One key application
of the Path Computation Element (PCE) based architecture is the
computation of inter-area TE-LSP paths. The PCE Communication
Protocol (PCECP) is used to communicate computation requests from
Path Computation Clients (PCC) to PCEs, and to return computed paths
in responses. This document lists a detailed set of PCECP specific
requirements for support of inter-area TE-LSP path computation. It
complements the generic requirements for a PCE Communication
   Protocol.

In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-pce-pcecp-interarea-reqs-05.txt".
