This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your
lists.bell-labs.com mailing list memberships. It includes your
subscription info and how to use it to change it or unsubscribe from a
list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, pint-request@lists.bell-labs.com) containing
just the word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be
sent to you with instructions.

If you have questions, problems, comments, etc, send them to
mailman-owner@lists.bell-labs.com. Thanks!

IPTS 2000 is a new workshop dedicated to the important, emerging field of IP
Telecom Services research.

In contrast to the services available on the PSTN, a new world of telecom
services is possible on an IP-based infrastructure. This world presents new
challenges for service development, deployment and management. This one-day
workshop will serve as a forum for the dissemination of research relating to
these challenges.

We have put together an excellent technical program that includes 7 original
research papers, two invited speakers, and a round table discussion. We look
forward to the participation from you and your colleagues in the telecom
industry and the research community. Registration is now open at
http://pulver.com/ipts2000/register.html.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

Title : A list of possible PINT functions
	Author(s)	: L. Conroy, J. Buller
	Filename	: draft-conroy-pint-act-00.txt
	Pages : 6
	Date : 11-Aug-00

This Internet Draft is one of a pair written at the request of one
of the SPIRITS Working Group co-chairs in order to elicit discussion
on what extended functionality SPIRITS may be used to provide; the
PINT work has similar requirements for a definition of the building
blocks that might be used in future services (and so need to be
supported by the protocol). This note provides the 'mirror image' of
the associated SPIRITS draft, listing functional building blocks that
may be executed in response to future PINT protocol requests.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-conroy-pint-act-00.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-conroy-pint-act-00.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-conroy-pint-act-00.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Recently, a member of one of the mailing lists had their system infected
with a virus, which was then sent to the list server and dutifully
resent out to hundreds of people on one of the lists.

To help prevent such an occurence in the future, I have begun stripping
certain attachments out of mail sent to the lists. In the place of the
attachment, there will be a notice that the file was stripped from the
mail, and why.

File attachments with the following extensions will be automatically
stripped from all mail sent to lists distributed from this server:

exe, vbs, lnk, pif, wsh, wse, jscript, kix, shs & msi

Because they are deemed important to the proper running of some of the
lists, Microsoft Word (.doc) and Microsoft Powerpoint (.ppt) files will
continue to be allowed as attachments, along with anything else not
covered by the above list of file extensions being disallowed.

Please send any questions, concerns, or comments regarding this policy,
to:

	listadmins@research.bell-labs.com

Your Friendly List Admin,

	-ste (Shaun Erickson, ste@research.bell-labs.com)

Shaun,

Many thanks for the information. I believe you have made the right decision.
Furthermore, for all IETF lists (PINT, SIN, SPIRITS, IPTEL) you may and should
disallow even .doc and .ppt attachments. Those who post to these lists must
follow the IETF-required practice of putting documents on their own sites and
sending only pointers via the exploders. To summarise, only text files should be
admitted to the IETF lists.

Please also feel free to impose a reasonable limit on the size of the
IETF-related e-mail messages.

Igor

Actually, those probably shouldn't be sent at all to an open-standards
list, as they are proprietary formats that are difficult for a
significant fraction (i.e., those not using Microsoft operating systems)
to read and are themselves likely to contain viruses.
