A new Request for Comments is now available in online RFC libraries.

        RFC 6885

Title: Stringprep Revision and Problem Statement
for the Preparation and Comparison of
                    Internationalized Strings (PRECIS)
        Author: M. Blanchet, A. Sullivan
        Status: Informational
        Stream: IETF
        Date: March 2013
        Mailbox: Marc.Blanchet@viagenie.ca,

        Pages: 34
        Characters: 72167
        Updates/Obsoletes/SeeAlso: None

        I-D Tag: draft-ietf-precis-problem-statement-09.txt

        URL: http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc6885.txt

If a protocol expects to compare two strings and is prepared only for
those strings to be ASCII, then using Unicode code points in those
strings requires they be prepared somehow. Internationalizing Domain
Names in Applications (here called IDNA2003) defined and used
Stringprep and Nameprep. Other protocols subsequently defined
Stringprep profiles. A new approach different from Stringprep and
Nameprep is used for a revision of IDNA2003 (called IDNA2008). Other
Stringprep profiles need to be similarly updated, or a replacement of
Stringprep needs to be designed. This document outlines the issues
to be faced by those designing a Stringprep replacement.

This document is a product of the Preparation and Comparison of Internationalized Strings Working Group of the IETF.

During the WG session last week, I got the sense that people find the
term "NameClass" misleading ("why can't I represent my name using the
NameClass?!"). Thus I propose changing it to "SafeClass". Any objections?

It's the best I could come up with on the plane yesterday. :-)

My only concern is that people might think "safe" is some kind of
guarantee that nothing bad could ever happen if they use the SafeClass...

Hi Peter,

I have the same concern about SafeClass too. Can't think of a better
name, but don't see it as big concern. Probably just more text needed
to explain 'safe' under what condition.

Just throwing names out from my brain...

RestrictedClass?
IdentifierClass?
ResourceNamingClass?

I was also going to suggest IdentifierClass just as your message came
through. Many people already understand an 'identifier' to consist of
characters from a restricted set (as in 99% of programming languages,
and various protocols). Usernames usually draw from a similar set of
characters in most systems.

Matthew

Yeah, I thought of that one too. The idea behind SafeClass is that

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the Preparation and Comparison of Internation=
alized Strings Working Group of the IETF.

Title : PRECIS Framework: Preparation and Comparison of Internat=
ionalized Strings in Application Protocols
	Author(s) : Peter Saint-Andre
                          Marc Blanchet
	Filename : draft-ietf-precis-framework-07.txt
	Pages : 70
	Date : 2013-03-26

Abstract:
Application protocols using Unicode code points in protocol strings
need to properly prepare such strings in order to perform valid
comparison operations (e.g., for purposes of authentication or
authorization). This document defines a framework enabling
application protocols to perform the preparation and comparison of
internationalized strings (a.k.a. "PRECIS") in a way that depends on
the properties of Unicode code points and thus is agile with respect
to versions of Unicode. As a result, this framework provides a more
sustainable approach to the handling of internationalized strings
than the previous framework, known as Stringprep (RFC 3454). A
specification that reuses this framework can either directly use the
PRECIS string classes or subclass the PRECIS string classes as
needed. This framework takes an approach similar to the revised
internationalized domain names (IDNs) in applications (IDNA)
   technology (RFC 5890, RFC 5891, RFC 5892, RFC 5893, RFC 5894) and
thus adheres to the high-level design goals described in the IAB's
recommendations regarding IDNs (RFC 4690), albeit for application
technologies other than the Domain Name System (DNS). This document
   obsoletes RFC 3454.

This version incorporates name changes for the string classes and some
adjustments based on feedback received at IETF 86. It does not update
the code point tables, nor does it include any text about migration
from existing stringprep profiles to new PRECIS usages because I have
not yet determined what we can say about migration that would be of
general use.

More soon.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the Preparation and Comparison of Internation=
alized Strings Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Preparation and Comparison of Internationalized Strings =
Representing Simple User Names and Passwords
	Author(s) : Peter Saint-Andre
                          Alexey Melnikov
	Filename : draft-ietf-precis-saslprepbis-01.txt
	Pages : 13
	Date : 2013-03-27

Abstract:
This document describes how to handle Unicode strings representing
simple user names and passwords, primarily for purposes of
comparison. This profile is intended to be used by Simple
Authentication and Security Layer (SASL) mechanisms (such as PLAIN
and SCRAM-SHA-1), as well as other protocols that exchange simple
user names or passwords. This document obsoletes RFC 4013.
