A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Preparation and Comparison of Internationalized Strings Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Mapping characters for PRECIS classes
        Authors : Yoshiro YONEYA
                          Takahiro Nemoto
	Filename : draft-ietf-precis-mappings-10.txt
	Pages : 12
	Date : 2015-05-06

Abstract:
The framework for preparation and comparison of internationalized
strings ("PRECIS") defines several classes of strings for preparation
and comparison. Case mapping is defined because many protocols
perform case-sensitive or case-insensitive string comparison and so
preparation of the string is mandatory. The Internationalized Domain
Names in Applications (IDNA) and the PRECIS problem statement
describes mappings for internationalized strings that are not limited
to case, but include width mapping and mapping of delimiters and
other specials that can be taken into consideration. This document
provides guidelines for authors of protocol profiles of the PRECIS
framework and describes several mappings that can be applied between
receiving user input and passing permitted code points to
internationalized protocols. The mappings described here are
expected to be applied as an additional mapping and locale-/context-
   dependent case mapping.

A diff from the previous version is available at:

Please note that it may take a couple of minutes from the time of submission
until the htmlized version and diff are available at tools.ietf.org.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Preparation and Comparison of Internationalized Strings Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Preparation, Enforcement, and Comparison of Internationalized Strings Representing Usernames and Passwords
        Authors : Peter Saint-Andre
                          Alexey Melnikov
	Filename : draft-ietf-precis-saslprepbis-17.txt
	Pages : 23
	Date : 2015-05-15

Abstract:
This document describes updated methods for handling Unicode strings
representing usernames and passwords. The previous approach was
known as SASLprep (RFC 4013) and was based on Stringprep (RFC 3454).
The methods specified in this document provide a more sustainable
approach to the handling of internationalized usernames and
passwords. The PRECIS framework, RFC YYYY, obsoletes RFC 3454, and
   this document obsoletes RFC 4013.

[[ NOTE TO RFC EDITOR: please replace "YYYY" in the previous
paragraph with the RFC number assigned to draft-ietf-precis-
   framework. ]]

A new Request for Comments is now available in online RFC libraries.

        RFC 7564

Title: PRECIS Framework: Preparation, Enforcement, and
                    Comparison of Internationalized Strings in
                    Application Protocols
        Author: P. Saint-Andre, M. Blanchet
        Status: Standards Track
        Stream: IETF
        Date: May 2015
        Mailbox: peter@andyet.com,
                    Marc.Blanchet@viagenie.ca
        Pages: 40
        Characters: 93580
        Obsoletes: RFC 3454

        I-D Tag: draft-ietf-precis-framework-23.txt

        URL: https://www.rfc-editor.org/info/rfc7564

        DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17487/RFC7564

Application protocols using Unicode characters in protocol strings
need to properly handle such strings in order to enforce
internationalization rules for strings placed in various protocol
slots (such as addresses and identifiers) and to perform valid
comparison operations (e.g., for purposes of authentication or
authorization). This document defines a framework enabling
application protocols to perform the preparation, enforcement, and
comparison of internationalized strings ("PRECIS") in a way that
depends on the properties of Unicode characters and thus is agile
with respect to versions of Unicode. As a result, this framework
provides a more sustainable approach to the handling of
internationalized strings than the previous framework, known as
Stringprep (RFC 3454). This document obsoletes RFC 3454.

This document is a product of the Preparation and Comparison of Internationalized Strings Working Group of the IETF.

This is now a Proposed Standard.

STANDARDS TRACK: This document specifies an Internet Standards Track
protocol for the Internet community, and requests discussion and suggestions
for improvements. Please refer to the current edition of the Official
Internet Protocol Standards (https://www.rfc-editor.org/standards) for the
standardization state and status of this protocol. Distribution of this
memo is unlimited.

This announcement is sent to the IETF-Announce and rfc-dist lists.
To subscribe or unsubscribe, see
  https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/ietf-announce

For downloading RFCs, see https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc.html

Requests for special distribution should be addressed to either the
author of the RFC in question, or to rfc-editor@rfc-editor.org. Unless
specifically noted otherwise on the RFC itself, all RFCs are for
unlimited distribution.

DISCUSS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

4.1: zero length password - I think you're wrong on that
one but it is arguable. If RFC4013 also prohibited zero
length passwords (I couldn't tell at a quick glance) or if
the WG did debate this and having done so decided to
prohibit zero length passwords then I will clear the
discuss immediately. But if not, I'd like to chat about
it...

There are situations where an empty password is ok (say
when I'm not "protecting" something but just want to know
what user's profile to use, e.g. for weather) and that is
supported in many systems (that hence won't be able to
exactly adopt this) and insisting on a non-empty password
could be more damaging than allowing a zero-length
password, whenever a user re-uses a password for something
for which no password is really needed (and which hence is
less likely to be well protected) and where that password
is also used to protect something of significantly higher
value. The zero-length password is also not an interesting
subset of the set of stupid passwords really so doesn't
deserve to be called out as such (and you say that in the
draft when you talk about length-1 passwords.) So I think
allowing zero length passwords is better overall, and more
consistent with implementations.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
COMMENT:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

- Unsurprisingly, the diff between this and RFC4013 isn't
useful, so I read from scratch. If I'm commenting on
something that was already true of 4013, just tell me and
that'll be fine.

- intro: given the unsolved i18n issues and the fact that
passwords are crap (security wise) would it be fair to ask
that you add a sentence here to encourage folks to not use
passwords at all but some better form of authentication,
when that's possible? (Which is sadly not nearly common
enough for user authentication.)

- nitty nit: intro, 2nd last para on p3: once a password is
chosen, there are no more entropy changes so you cannot
maximise entropy *during* authentication. Maybe
s/during/for/ works though.

- 3.2.2, bullet 3: I read this as saying to use the latest
Unicode default case folding and not to stick with v7.0
even if a new and in this sense different version is
published. This is just to check that that is what you
intended and that I've not misread the text.

Yes, zero length password was always prohibited by RFC 4013. If you look
at various RFCs that reference SASLPrep, they say "if the password is
invalid or zero length after applying SASLPrep normalization, then
reject it" (or similar words).

The main reason for disallowing it was because with SASLPrep (or
Precis), a non empty sequence of characters can result in empty password
after canonicalization, which seems misleading/dangerous if allowed.

Can you suggest specific text? It is a bit hard to agree/disagree in

That wins. I'll clear the discuss and make this a comment.

Will do in the updated comment.

(Which is sadly not nearly common
enough for user authentication.) Maybe something like:

"While this document specifies how to handle passwords
to the best of our current abilities, those designing and
implementing protocols would be much better off if they
can avoid any use of passwords. Using passwords means
having to deal with the inherent insecurity of passwords,
and of password verifier databases, and also the i18n
issues described here. Authentication schemes based on
digital signatures or other cryptographic mechanisms
are, where usable, far preferable."

- nitty nit: intro, 2nd last para on p3: once a password is
chosen, there are no more entropy changes so you cannot
maximise entropy *during* authentication. Maybe
s/during/for/ works though.

- 3.2.2, bullet 3: I read this as saying to use the latest

even if a new and in this sense different version is
published. This is just to check that that is what you
intended and that I've not misread the text.

4.1: zero length password - I think you're wrong on that
one but it is arguable. This was a discuss until you told
me that 4013 prohibited 'em too so probably no point
in changing now if it's just my opinion.

There are situations where an empty password is ok (say
when I'm not "protecting" something but just want to know
what user's profile to use, e.g. for weather) and that is
supported in many systems (that hence won't be able to

password, whenever a user re-uses a password for something
for which no password is really needed (and which hence is

is also used to protect something of significantly higher
value. The zero-length password is also not an interesting
subset of the set of stupid passwords really so doesn't
deserve to be called out as such (and you say that in the
draft when you talk about length-1 passwords.) So I think
allowing zero length passwords is better overall, and more
consistent with implementations.

Truly, the diff is so large that it's more sensible to read this
document anew.

Is it really the place of this document to discourage the use of
passwords? I'm all in favor of the sentiment, but it seems to me that a
BCP on the topic would have a lot more force and could claim IETF consensus.

We might do this:

OLD
(at the time of this writing, the algorithm is specified in
        Chapter 3 of [Unicode7.0])

NEW
(at the time of this writing, the algorithm is specified in
Chapter 3 of [Unicode7.0], but the chapter number might change
in a future version of the Unicode Standard)

The idea behind including the Unicode7.0 reference was to enable the
reader to quickly find the relevant discussion as of today, but we know
that the exact pointer might change.

I see your point. Do you have a sense of what kind of systems today
allow zero-length passwords? Given that RFC 4013 prohibited zero-length
passwords and that they provide no security whatsoever, I don't see a
compelling reason to modify the recommendation. However, as you say this
document doesn't provide general guidance on password strengthy anyway,
so I suppose I'd be fine with changing it to SHOULD NOT as long as we
provide some text about why zero-length passwords are acceptable in some
existing systems.

Perhaps. But I'd still argue that this is a good place, even
if not *the* place. I'm thinking that realising just how i18n
is horrible might be the straw that breaks the camel's back
and causes some coders to go use crypto instead:-)

But, we probably shouldn't spend effort debating it, so I'd
say best is if you folks decide to include something or not
and I'll be fine with whatever you decide.

I'm not sure NEW is that different and seems like I did get
the right message from OLD, so you're probably fine with no
change.

I think most operating systems either allow empty passwords
or else try insist on what they think is "strong" or else
give some strength feedback to the user. Many CLI tools allow
for empty passwords in case they're used in a script and
the same goes for passwords needed by servers that might
ever need to restart without a human. (And yes in most cases
such tools provide a way to input a password from e.g. a
file, but that's often no more secure than no password
given how filesystem access control works.)

I'll leave it to you folks to decide if you think a SHOULD
NOT is ok or not, but I suspect you might want to check that
the WG are ok with that change from 4013.

I suppose an alternative might be to just note some of
the issues above and say that in a bunch of cases an
application will have to accept as input either <empty-string>
or <password>. I guess that's what's done now in any case
and I'd be fine with handling it that way too if you prefer.

Cheers,
S.

Hope does spring eternal, eh? Yet somehow I don't think i18n (which no
one cares about) is going to push those coders over the edge, when
multi-billion dollar breaches of password databases haven't done the job
already.

I'm inclined to leave it out. But would you like to work together on
that I-D about why passwords must die a horrible death? ;-)

Most definitely.

Ah, true. That seems preferable to me.

Let's see if Alexey and I can formulate some text...

How's this? (I haven't checked it with Alexey yet but he can reply here.)

OLD
Note: The prohibition on zero-length passwords is not a
recommendation regarding password strength (since a password of
only one byte is highly insecure), but is meant to prevent
applications from omitting a password entirely.

NEW
Note: Some existing systems allow an empty string in places where
a password would be expected (e.g., command-line tools that might
be called from an automated script, or servers that might need to
be restarted without human intervention). From the perspective of
this document (and RFC 4013 before it), these empty strings are
not passwords but are workarounds for the practical difficulty of
using passwords in certain scenarios. The prohibition on zero-
length passwords is not a recommendation regarding password
strength (since a password of only one byte is highly insecure),
but is meant to prevent applications from mistakenly omitting a
password entirely, since when internationalized characters are
accepted a non-empty sequence of characters can result in a zero-
       length password after canonicalization.

	Filename : draft-ietf-precis-saslprepbis-18.txt
	Pages : 23
	Date : 2015-05-28

Abstract:
This document describes updated methods for handling Unicode strings
representing usernames and passwords. The previous approach was
known as SASLprep (RFC 4013) and was based on Stringprep (RFC 3454).
The methods specified in this document provide a more sustainable
approach to the handling of internationalized usernames and
passwords. The PRECIS framework, RFC 7564, obsoletes RFC 3454, and
   this document obsoletes RFC 4013.

The IETF datatracker status page for this draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-precis-saslprepbis/

There's also a htmlized version available at:
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-precis-saslprepbis-18

A diff from the previous version is available at:
https://www.ietf.org/rfcdiff?url2=draft-ietf-precis-saslprepbis-18

Please note that it may take a couple of minutes from the time of submission
until the htmlized version and diff are available at tools.ietf.org.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP at:

The co-chairs do not currently plan to request a meeting slot for next
IETF in Prague. Do people have any topic to discuss that requires f2f
time in Prague?

Regards, Marc.

Hi Marc!

Well, our documents are moving forward:

RFC 7564 has been published
draft-ietf-precis-saslprepbis was approved on the IESG telechat today
draft-ietf-precis-nickname is waiting on a shepherd writeup
draft-ietf-precis-mappings has finished WGLC

So that's progress!

I suppose we could have a discussion in Prague about next steps,
especially how we can encourage other application protocols (Stringprep
"customers") to migrate to PRECIS. We've somewhat expected that to
happen after the PRECIS WG closes down, so there are perhaps some
logistical and expert review issues to figure out.

Peter

I question if this is correct -- my SASLprep implementation accepts zero
length passwords. Where in RFC 4013 is the requirement to reject them?

I think Stephen's thoughts around empty passwords makes a lot of sense.
Empty passwords are used in many places, for good or bad.

I'm certain that not all RFCs that refer to SASLprep has the wording
above. RFC 5802 (SCRAM) doesn't, as far as I can tell, for example.
