Subject: Request for allocation of new Framed-Compression values
Date: Mon, 29 May 2006 13:18:06 -0700
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

The IANA has received a request for allocation of new values of the
Framed-Compression attribute, based on the following document:

http://www.watersprings.org/pub/id/draft-chowdhury-rohc-radius-attributes-00.txt

New values are being requested for the following compression types:

   TBD-1	RObust Header Compression [RFC3095].
TBD-2	VJ TCP/IP header compression and RObust Header Compression
   		[ROHC-VJ].
TBD-3	Link Layer Assisted RObust Header Compression [RFC3242].

Based on my reading of the document, I'm prepared to recommend that the
request be approved. Any objections?

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the RADIUS EXTensions Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : RADIUS Delegated-IPv6-Prefix Attribute
	Author(s)	: J. Salowey, R. Droms
	Filename	: draft-ietf-radext-delegated-prefix-01.txt
	Pages : 5
	Date : 2006-5-24

This document defines a RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial In User
Service) attribute that carries an IPv6 prefix that is to be
delegated to the user. This attribute is usable within either RADIUS
or Diameter.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Issue 194 (reproduced below) has been addressed in the -03 MIB =
documents. Bert's comment came in on a strawman -03, and I made the =
suggested revisions prior to submitting the -03 documents to the =
Secretariat.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Issue 194: InetPortNumber
Submitter name: Bert Wijnen
Submitter email address: bwijnen@lucent.com
Date first submitted: May 11, 2006
Reference: http://ops.ietf.org/lists/radiusext/2006/msg00504.html
Document: Auth-Client-MIB-03, Acct-Client-MIB-03
Comment type: Editorial
Priority: 1
Section: 7
Rationale/Explanation of issue:
When I read:
   radiusAuthClientServerInetPortNumber OBJECT-TYPE
         SYNTAX InetPortNumber
         MAX-ACCESS read-only
         STATUS current
         DESCRIPTION
"The UDP port the client is using to send requests
                to this server."
         REFERENCE "RFC 2865 section 3"
         ::=3D { radiusAuthServerExtEntry 4 }
or
      radiusAccClientServerInetPortNumber OBJECT-TYPE
            SYNTAX InetPortNumber
            MAX-ACCESS read-only
            STATUS current
            DESCRIPTION
"The UDP port the client is using to send requests
                   to this accounting server."
            REFERENCE "RFC 2866 section 3"
            ::=3D { radiusAccServerExtEntry 4 }

I think I would make that
=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 SYNTAX=A0=A0=A0=A0 InetPortNumber (1..65535)
So that it is also determinable by machine that zero is invalid.
I know that I only pointed out that according to RFC 4001 you must state
what zero means. B ut if the value is not allowed, as I now understand =
it,
then I think using the SYNTAX I suggest is better.

Proposed Resolution: Accept
=A0

They have passed WG Last Call some time ago. The IESG may decide to
hold an IETF Last Call on all of these documents.

This correction was suggested by Bert Wijnen, and it passed the SMIv2
syntax checker that I use.

I suspect this is an issue with your compiler.

Ooops. No, it is not OK. This is a typo that will need to be corrected
before the document is published as an RFC. Good catch. Everyone else,
including me, has missed this so far. :-)

What is the status of this and the updates to 2619, 2620 and 2621? Have =
these already passed last call? Just curious as I am wanting to =
implement this to get the discontinuity values.

I have three comments:

1) in this MIB I noticed that mosy complains about the definition of =
radiusAuthClientExtMIBCompliance MODULE-COMPLIANCE
When I make the following change the syntax error is resolved. RFC-2578 =
indicates that the restricted enumeration is ok for INTEGER. Probably an =
issue with mosy not interpreting the textual convention, but wanted to =
mention it in case it needs to be corrected somehow...

        OBJECT radiusAuthServerInetAddressType
--          SYNTAX InetAddressType { ipv4(1), ipv6(2) }
         SYNTAX INTEGER { ipv4(1), ipv6(2) }

2) In the Accounting Client MIB I get a syntax error with mosy in the =
radiusAccClientExtMIBCompliance MODULE-COMPLIANCE. However if I make the =
following change it works. Again, Probably an issue with mosy...

--        SYNTAX InetAddressType { ipv4(1), ipv6(2) }
        SYNTAX INTEGER { ipv4(1), ipv6(2) }

3) the accounting client MIB the first line of the MIB changed from=20

   RADIUS-ACC-CLIENT-MIB DEFINITIONS ::=3D BEGIN

to

   RADIUS-ACCT-CLIENT-MIB DEFINITIONS ::=3D BEGIN

(the T was added). Is this ok?

Carl

This memo defines a set of extensions which instrument RADIUS
authentication client functions. These extensions represent a
portion of the Management Information Base (MIB) for use with network
management protocols in the Internet community. Using these
extensions IP-based management stations can manage RADIUS
authentication clients.

This memo obsoletes RFC 2618 by deprecating the MIB table containing
IPv4-only address formats and defining a new table to add support for
version neutral IP address formats. The remaining MIB objects from
RFC 2618 are carried forward into this document. The memo also adds
UNITS and REFERENCE clauses to selected objects.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the RADIUS EXTensions Working Group of the IETF.

Title : RADIUS Acct Server MIB (IPv6)
	Author(s)	: D. Nelson
	Filename	: draft-ietf-radext-rfc2621bis-03.txt
	Pages : 25
	Date : 2006-5-15

This memo defines a set of extensions which instrument RADIUS
accounting server functions. These extensions represent a portion of
the Management Information Base (MIB) for use with network management
protocols in the Internet community. Using these extensions IP-based
management stations can manage RADIUS accounting servers.

This memo obsoletes RFC 2621 by deprecating the MIB table containing
IPv4-only address formats and defining a new table to add support for
version neutral IP address formats. The remaining MIB objects from
RFC 2621 are carried forward into this document. This memo also adds
UNITS and REFERENCE clauses to selected objects.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-radext-rfc2621bis-03.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-radext-rfc2621bis-03.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:

Before submitting this to the IESG, it would be helpful to know if the
comments on -06 have been addressed.

All major issues I've raised before are addressed. The document reads much
better after removal of client side nonce generation. Some minor additional
comments below:

  2.1.2. Constructing an Access-Request
[...]

Due to syntactic requirements, HTTP-style protocols have to escape
quote characters in contents of HTTP Digest directives. When

"with backslash all quote and backslash characters in contents of ..."

translating directives into RADIUS attributes, the RADIUS client only
removes the surrounding quotes where present. See Section 3 for an
  example.

  2.2.1. General Attribute Checks

[...]
The RADIUS server removes '\' characters that escape quote characters
"... that escape quote and '\' characters ..."
from the text values it has received in the Digest-* attributes.

  8.1. Denial of Service
[...]
An attacker can attempt a denial of service attack on one or more
RADIUS servers by sending a large number of HTTP-style requests. To
make simple denial of service attacks more difficult, the nonce
issuer (RADIUS client or server) MUST check if it has generated the
nonce received from an HTTP-style client. This SHOULD be done
statelessly. For example, a nonce could consist of a
cryptographically random part and some kind of signature provided by
the RADIUS client, as described in [RFC2617], section 3.2.1.

The RADIUS client no longer generates nonces, so it can't verify signature,
unless it knows how RADIUS server generates nonces.

  9. Acknowledgments

We would like to acknowledge Kevin Mcdermott (Cisco Systems) /or
typo: "for"
  providing comments and experimental implementation.

I think this document is fine now.
However, when I read:
    radiusDynAuthServerClientPortNumber OBJECT-TYPE
           SYNTAX InetPortNumber
           MAX-ACCESS read-only

           STATUS current
           DESCRIPTION
"The UDP destination port that the RADIUS Dynamic
Authorization Client is using to send requests to this
server. The value zero is invalid."
           ::= { radiusDynAuthServerEntry 4 }

I think I would make that

           SYNTAX InetPortNumber (1..65535)
So that it is also determinable by machine that zero is invalid.
I know that I only pointed out that according to RFC4001 you must state
what zero means. But if the value is not allowed, as I now understand it,
then I think using the SYNTAX I suggest is better.

The -03 revision drafts, now in preparation, do have a discontinuity
timer per row, which means per client or server instance.

Can you check that this is fixed in draft-ietf-radext-vlan-05?

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the RADIUS EXTensions Working Group of the IETF.

Title : RADIUS Attributes for Virtual LAN and Priority Support
	Author(s)	: P. Congdon, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-radext-vlan-05.txt
	Pages : 14
	Date : 2006-5-2

This document proposes additional RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial
In User Service) attributes for dynamic Virtual LAN assignment and
prioritization, for use in provisioning of access to IEEE 802 local
area networks. These attributes are usable within either RADIUS or
   Diameter.

You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-radext-vlan-05.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in

or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:

In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-radext-vlan-05.txt".

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the

Were there responses to the questions about diameter to radius
gateways? Knowing what current implementations do will help guide
ongoing work.
