I apologize for the off-topic post, but couldnt find any other forum to get
some answers (is there a newsgroup that deals with RADIUS questions?).

Is the general norm to restart the Radius server whenver new users are
added? I ask this because with a users textfile, the only way to add or
delete users is to generate a new file and then restart the server.

The alternative would be to have authentication requests go straight to
whatever database you have running, but the disadvantage is that the Radius
server is now tightly integrated with a database.

Based on your experiences, do you recommend one way over another? Or, is
there a middle ground (maybe a textfile that contains only the incremental
changes in the database with primitives like add or delete)?

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

ooops, indeed this is right, but still 2 remarks:
1. Eventhough the Vendor-Specific attribute exists, some vendors still
(also) use
the 'normal'
space of attributes and create their own dictionary of attributes.
2. The use of Vendor-extensions in DIAMETER also allows for Vendor
Specific
messages.

I hesitate to answer the question about what the "norm" is, because the norm
may in fact be a bad thing to do. So...

In a case where a RADIUS server is part of a mission-critical
high-availability service, there probably is a requirement that the RADIUS
server can run without interruption. That is, normal operations should not
impact service availability. Adding users is certainly a normal operation.
This requirement can be met in various ways, but IMO doing lookups to some
type of back-end database is a good solution.

I don't see why integration with a database is a disadvantage. Databases
usually have well-documented public protocol interfaces and standard APIs.
We have used RADIUS servers that talk to SQL databases and LDAP directories
in order to achieve this level of service, with good results and
performance.

There is certainly a trend in the industry for commercial RADIUS servers to
support various back-end databases and directories.

Are many vendors out there

i) using UTF-8 today, or
ii) planning on using UTF-8 in the near future

Since all of the recent RFCs use terms like "should", "recomend"
(eg tunnelling, extensions, v2 rfc's)

Would you use it for all your strings? or just some? and would you
expect an AAA server to return the same back?

Thanks

Is there any interest in having a RADIUS interoperability testing event
prior to IETF in November?

Potential areas of testing would include:
	- Updates to specs (including Call-Check)
	- Tunnel drafts
	- Extentions
	- MS-CHAP

Of course setting up some of the environments may be trickier given LNS
servers and line simulators. Please indicate interest back to me directly.

Thanks.
	Dave.

Hello:

Could someone tell me the status of the draft RADIUS version 2. Is it
going to become an RFC?

Thanks

Once upon a time Gopal Dommety shaped the electrons to say...

There is no "RADIUS Version 2" - there is just RADIUS.

That name was (improperly) applied to some work done on what was eventually
named DIAMETER. At this time there is a group working on DIAMETER, but,
AFAIK, it is not under the aegis of any official IETF forum and there are
other protocols being developed that could also be used for AAA. Whether
DIAMETER will ever become an RFC remains to be seen. At this point in time
I am not aware of any systems that use DIAMETER, aside for test systems
used by the group working on it.

Actually there is a Radius 2 and it's documented at
draft-ietf-radius-radius-v2-01.txt and it has nothing to do with Diameter.

And it sure would be nice to get a status update. Has the IESG reviewed it?
Will they?

I was asking about the status of this draft. From the naming
convention it looks like RADIUS working group draft. Could someone
shed light on this?

Thanks,

It is a RADIUS WG draft and I seem to recall it went through WG last call
which I why I wondered if the IESG had reviewed it.

Correct. There are a few new attributes documented since some of these had
become widely deployed. There is also support for Appletalk and EAP.

This is not an attempt to fix the protocol.

There is no such thing as RADIUS version 2; the
draft-ietf-radius-radius-v2-01.txt is for the advancement of RADIUS
from Proposed Draft to Draft Standard. It's passed WG last call and is
ready for IETF last call, but needs a couple more documents to be
submitted along with it (the interoperability statement and some
guidelines on allocating attributes), which I'm working on.

The v2 is unfortunate, but that's how the Internet Drafts editor wanted
to name it.

Somehow I missed the WG last call, must have been in stasis or something. I became aware
of the following text in the new document which I have objections with:

A forwarding server may either perform its forwarding function in a
pass through manner, where it sends retransmissions on as soon as it
gets them, or it may take responsibility for retransmissions, for
example in cases where the network link between forwarding and remote
server has very different characteristics than the link between NAS
   and forwarding server.

Extreme care should be used when implementing a proxy server that
takes responsibility for retransmissions so that its retransmission
   policy is robust and scalable.

The text above is about as vague as one can possibly imagine, and it having *some*
intermediate nodes within a proxy chain perform their own retransmission, while
others do not *will* cause problems in the network. My opinion is that either this
document requires this functionality (where each node retransmits), or that only
the NAS does (as is the current protocol). Furthermore, a RADIUS server will not
be aware of the underlying links between the NAS and the forwarding servers, so I
don't quite understand how a server would know that this needs to be turned on.
Lastly, the last sentence makes it clear that the authors have issues with this
new statement, and "robust and scalable" is left up to the developer's imagination.

The whole premise behind RADIUS servers in the past was that they were largely
stateless. I find it strange that moving the document to Draft Standard actually
changes the whole concept of RADIUS servers. My understanding of moving to Draft
Standard is that no major protocol change should be introduced. I consider this
very major, and it has never been proven to work in a large network.

One more comment. In the past it has been made very clear that an empty attribute
(length = 2), is invalid and not supported in the RADIUS protocol. For this reason
we had to change the EAP draft. The new draft now allows this. Is there a reason why
this never before functionality is now allowed in the new draft?
