              Networked Group Communication (NGC 2000)
                       November 8-10, 2000
		       Stanford University
                    Palo Alto, California, USA

Organized by Sprint, Cisco Systems, and COST 264
                  in cooperation with ACM Sigcomm

                 ---------------------------------

Scope of the Conference
-----------------------

The aim of the Workshop is to allow researchers and practioners to
present the design and implementation techniques for networked group
communication. The focus of the Workshop is strictly on multicast and
networked group communication. This Workshop is the second and only
international event in this area (first workshop was in Pisa, Italy,
in November 1999).

The workshop will start with half day tutorials on the 8th. The
technical program will include two keynotes and invited talks on the
9th and the 10th of November 2000.

Authors are invited to submit papers on any issue related to networked
group communication, including but not limited to:

     multicast congestion control
     multicast routing, naming, address allocation
     scalability in multicast services
     reliable and semi-reliable multicast protocols
     novel multicast architectures
     multicast security
     multicast deployment related issues
     multicast over heterogeneous media
multipeer applications (distributed interactive apps, games, DIS)
     QoS issues with multicast
Pricing and economic model for multicast traffic
     group management techniques
     network engineering for multicast services

The Proceedings of the Workshop will be published by ACM and papers will
be available on-line prior to the workshop.

Paper Submission Guidelines
---------------------------

Papers must be less than 20 double-spaced pages long, have an abstract
of 100-150 words, and be original material that has not been previously
published nor is currently under review by another conference or journal.
Authors must submit papers electronically, using the instructions at
http://www.cs.ucsb.edu/ngc2000/

The application deadline for Sigcomm 2000 Student Travel Grants is fast
approaching. This year, we are fortunate and expect to receive funding
from the NSF, ACM SIGCOMM, and the Nokia Corporation! Thanks to our
generous benefactors, we are expecting to fund quite a large number of
students.

The committee strongly prefers to give grants to students who are not
paper authors, though such students are welcome to apply. Other criteria
will include evidence of a serious interest in networking, as demonstrated
by coursework and project experience. ACM SIGCOMM encourages participation
of women and under-represented minorities. The amount of support provided
to each student is intended to cover the student's travel, food and
lodging for four nights. Students throughout the world are encouraged to
apply, however, funding from NSF is limited solely to US students.

The recipients of the travel grants will be decided by a committee
including

Brian Neil Levine, U. Massachusetts Amherst, USA
   Ellen Zegura, Georgia Tech, USA
   Roch Guerin, U. Pennsylvania, USA
Luigi Rizzo, Universit di Pisa, Italy

An application for a travel grant will consist of a letter from the
student and a recommendation letter from the student's advisor. Please see
the conference web site for important details regarding each letter.

Send application and recommendation letters by email to Brian Levine,
brian@cs.umass.edu, in ASCII, Postscript or PDF format. Use the same
email address also for questions on the ACM SIGCOMM travel grant program.

Important Dates:

Application deadline: June 22, 2000

Hello,

Brian Whetten suggested that those of us signed up to work on
the tree-building BB and the TRACK PI get together in person
before the Pittsburgh IETF and get our drafts done.

Dah Ming Chiu and I will be hosting the meeting here at Sun's
Burlington MA office from June 26th through June 29th. The
other attendees so far are

	Brad Cain
	Brian Levine
	Brian Whetten

Other contributors are certainly welcome to attend, but rest
assured that the RMT group will have ample time to review and
comment on our results before and during the IETF meeting.
You won't miss anything unless you have something to contribute
that you haven't already sent to the list.

If you'd like to attend, please email both Dah Ming and I
(miriam.kadansky@sun.com dahming.chiu@sun.com) and we'll let you
know the details.

We didn't get back very many responses saying people were interested
in an RMRG meeting before the IETF. Thus, the plan now is to have a
one-day meeting on Friday July 28th, at ISI-East in Arlington, VA.
See http://www.east.isi.edu for details of the location.

The focus of the meeting will be purely on multicast congestion
control, with the aim of understanding where we stand with regard to
allowing some of this work to move into the IETF for standardization.

The room at ISI is rather small, so we need people who wish to attend
to RSVP to both Allison and me so we can tell if we will have enough
space. Also, please mail us with agenda items.

  - Mark and Allison

Mark,
Since the IETF is just a couple of days after this scheduled meeting, wouldn't it be possible to reschedule this sometime during the week of the IETF. Due to other work assignments it may be difficult for many to attend. Atleast in my case, though I am a newbie to this, I would eagerly want to attend it but won't be in the position to be physically present at the ISI-east Arlington site on the specified day.
I can't say anything about others. Though this is not a formal IETF WG, people could always schedule informal get togethers. As far as IETF is concerned they should not have any objection such informal evening technical discussion.
Is it feasible? If not then unlucky but interested individuals like can always go though the meeting notes, conclusions, minutes etc.
  Would appreciate your response

Thanks

I'm afraid not - there's no way to schedule a full-day meeting during
the IETF without clashing with sessions that Allison and I have to
attend.

Cheers,
