The draft deadlines for the July IETF are looming. The suggested
new milestones presented at the last IETF included submitting
the attack tree drafts and the OSPF vulnerability draft for publication
as Informational RFCs. By July 06.

But we've not seen new publications of these expired drafts on the list.
I don't think we can meet the July 06 deadline for request for publication.
Are the new drafts in the works?

And did the change in milestones ever get submitted/approved/etc?

I've no idea. I'll post that up to Bill and see what happens.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Routing Protocol Security Requirements Working Group of the IETF.

Title : OSPF Security Vulnerabilities Analysis
	Author(s)	: E. Jones, O. Le Moigne
	Filename	: draft-ietf-rpsec-ospf-vuln-02.txt
	Pages : 28
	Date : 2006-6-19

Internet infrastructure protocols were designed at the very early
stages of computer networks when "cyberspace" was still perceived as
a benign environment. As a consequence, malicious attacks were not
considered to be a major risk when these protocols were designed,
leaving today's Internet vulnerable. This paper provides an analysis
of OSPF vulnerabilities that could be exploited to modify the normal
routing process across a single domain together with an assessment of
when internal OSPF mechanisms can or cannot be leveraged to better
secure a domain.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-rpsec-ospf-vuln-02.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-rpsec-ospf-vuln-02.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-rpsec-ospf-vuln-02.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Emanuele,

WG chairs initiate last calls, not authors.

Russ said that he was going to check about the status of charter changes.
I'd like also to mention one possible additional work item. At the
mike at the last IETF, I mentioned taking on the draft that looks at
damage if MD5 is broken. The response was that this was probably the
OSPF vulnerability analysis mentioned in the slides. (Unfortunately,
this comment was too small to make it to the minutes, so I'm working
off memory here.)

But I was speaking of draft-manral-rpsec-existing-crypto-02.txt,
not the recently announced draft-ietf-rpsec-ospf-vuln-02.txt

I believe that there is value in looking at the damage to various
protocols that use keyed MD5 as an authentication mechanism - as an
impetus to change and as a warning to operators while MD5 is still used.
So I'm in favor of taking on the Manral draft.

Comments?

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Routing Protocol Security Requirements Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : BGP Security Requirements
	Author(s)	: B. Christian, T. Tauber
	Filename	: draft-ietf-rpsec-bgpsecrec-06.txt
	Pages : 19
	Date : 2006-6-22

The security of BGP, the Border Gateway Protocol, is critical to the
proper operation of large-scale internetworks, both public and
private. While securing the information transmitted between two BGP
speakers is a relatively easy technical matter, securing BGP, as a
routing system, is more complex. This document describes a set of
requirements for securing BGP, including communications between BGP
speakers, and the routing information carried within BGP.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-rpsec-bgpsecrec-06.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-rpsec-bgpsecrec-06.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-rpsec-bgpsecrec-06.txt".

I've been getting the ospf vulnerability draft and the existing crypto
drafts mixed up--how about if we ask both to be presented in Montreal,
and then think about (take a hum about) taking them on as WG items? I
think we might have already covered this space before (in terms of
taking them on as WG items), but it might be good to do a level set of
where we are, and what we need to work on.

:-)

I agree the Manral draft appears relevant, however, I'm not sure your
characterization of it's thrust is accurate.

The OSPF vulnerability draft is already a WG document.

As for presentation ideas for Montreal, bring 'em on.

Yes, sorry, I worked off memory. Looking at it again, it seems to be
considering replay damages, rather than damage from hash brokenness.

Hi Sandy/ Tony,

The draft does talk about the known problems with MD5 and SHA-1
collision attacks. We do dis-reccomend the use of the algorithms
however. We have drafts for OSPF/ IS-IS as well as RIP which talk
about adding support for additional algorithms besides just MD5.

As discussed earlier on the list, it may be hard to make a malicious
packet with the same hash value(as fields like checksum/ version etc
will have to be correct for the packet not to be discarded). However
if such a thing is possible, most of the attacks possible, without the
hashing would be possible now.

I will add in detail the above description to the draft.

Thanks,
Vishwas
